Panthers now have 2 players on reserve/COVID-19 list

Chris Reed was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule says the delay to today’s practice was due to an extra round of testing after offensive lineman Chris Reed was placed on the COVID-19/reserve list.

Here’s what Rhule had to say about the news, per the team website.

“It’s infected hundreds of thousands of people. I think we’ve realized all along we would have to put people on the COVID list. . . We did our normal testing this morning as we got here and just kind of listened to our doctors and trainers and went out and did a second round of the point-of-care testing.”

Reed joins defensive back Derrek Thomas on the reserve/covid list. He was waived/injured a few days ago.

Panthers sign 2 wide receivers, put Omar Bayless on IR, waive CB Derrek Thomas

The Carolina Panthers have announced several roster moves designed to improve their depth at wide receiver after a slew of injuries.

The Carolina Panthers have announced several roster moves designed to improve their depth at wide receiver after a slew of injuries.

First, the team has made the signing of former XFL receiver Cam Phillips (six-foot, 174 pounds) official. He played with backup quarterback P.J. Walker on the Houston Roughnecks and was the league’s most productive wideout. Carolina also signed wide receiver Darrell Stewart Jr. (six-foot, 212 pounds). He played his college football at Michigan State, where he posted four touchdowns and 697 yards on 49 catches last season.

To make room for the two new receivers, the team placed undrafted rookie Omar Bayless on injured reserve. According to the Charlotte Observer, he underwent successful surgery on his knee yesterday. The recovery time is only expected to be a couple of weeks, so we might see him again in 2020.

Cornerback Derrek Thomas was also waived/injured. He left practice early on Tuesday but it’s not clear exactly what happened.

More moves could be coming soon. The team recently tried out two rookie defensive backs plus former Falcons defensive end Austin Larkin.

Panthers sign former Buccaneers DE, Baylor CB, waive 2 players

Panthers sign two defensive free agents, waive kicker Elliott Fry plus another DB.

The Carolina Panthers have signed two more free agents today, according to a release on the official team website.

Carolina added to the defensive backs room by signing cornerback Derrek Thomas, who played for head coach Matt Rhule at both Temple and Baylor. After his college career was over he went undrafted, then he spent time with the Seahawks and Steelers in the offseason but did he not play in 2019.

The Panthers also added to the defensive line again, signing former Buccaneers defensive end DaVonte Lambert. He played 11 games for Tampa in 2016 but hasn’t been on the field in the regular season since.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the team waived kicker Elliott Fry and defensive back Dominique Hatfield.

As of yet, the Panthers have not announced the reported signing of former Chargers offensive lineman Michael Schofield, who we are projecting to be the new starter at left guard.
