UNC Guard Caleb Love shared the sweetest moment with his mom after having the biggest game of his life

This is just the sweetest moment ever

The moments, man. That’s what March Madness is always about.

Sure, it’s awesome to crown a champion each year and to see which team can catch fire at the right time. But each and every year, we always get a few moments or two that we’ll never forget. Moments that will live on in time forever.

Caleb Love had one of those moments on Friday when he played the best game of his life to push UNC passed UCLA and into the Elite 8.

Love scored 30 points against UCLA with 27 of them coming in the second half of the game. He just couldn’t be stopped from 3-point range. Dude was hitting everything.

Dude absolutely went off. This was unquestionably the biggest came of his collegiate career so far and his life in basketball — period.

And the best part? His family was there to see it all. They were there in the stands watching him as he put on the best performance of his life. And after the game, when things were all said and done, he shared an extremely sweet moment with his mom, Alecia Thompson.

They had a huge hug.

Love also had this to say about his mom after this moment. He called her his backbone.

This is all just incredibly sweet, man. What a moment for Love and his family. No matter what happens from here, they’ll always have this. And that’s pretty incredible.

Jim Larrañaga shared an extremely cool moment with fans after Miami advanced to the Elite 8

Jim Larrañaga and Miami just made a ton of history.

Jim Larrañaga and the Miami Hurricanes made quite a bit of history with their 70-56 win over Iowa State on Friday.

For the first time in the history of the basketball program, they’re going to the Elite 8. They’ve knocked on the door several times with Sweet 16 appearances. They’ve had a number of cool tournament moments in their history, too.

But they have never actually been this far. Until today, that is. Larrañaga also made a bit of history himself. He became the first head coach in NCAA tournament history to lead two different programs to the Elite 8 as double-digit seeds.

He did it with George Mason in 2006. Now he’s doing it again with Miami here. That’s pretty awesome.

So, of course, they’re excited about Friday’s big win. They’re one step away from the Final Four.

Larranaga shared some of that excitement on Friday after the game with some of the fans in the stands. It was a pretty cool moment they shared here.

“Thank you. I’ll see you Sunday,” Larrañaga said before he moved on to the tunnel to go be with his team.

He said exactly what needed to be said. Let’s see how far they take this thing.

On this day in history: Michigan State shocks Duke in Elite 8 on Kenny Goins dagger

On March 31st, 2019, the Michigan State Spartans shocked the world and knocked off Zion Williamson and Duke in the Elite 8.

To this day, the 2018-19 Duke Men’s Basketball roster is one of the most talked about in basketball. Headlined by megastar Zion Williamson and flanked by top ten picks RJ Barrett and Cam Reddish and a stud point guard in Tre Jones, that year’s Duke team was considered one of the most talented in NCAA Men’s Basketball history. However, they were not unbeatable as some thought, and that was proven when they ran into Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans on March 31, 2019.

In a hard-fought game, with 35 seconds left, Izzo drew up a play that didn’t focus on one of his three stars in Aaron Henry, Cassius Winston, or Xavier Tillman. Instead, after Cassius Winston passed the ball to Tillman, it was Kenny Goins who flared out to the three-point line. Zion Williamson, distracted by a cutting Cassius Winston, was just a half-second late to stop Goins as he put up a dagger three which put MSU up 68-66 over the Blue Devils.

You can watch that play here:

Duke had a chance to tie, but RJ Barrett missed one free throw, allowing the Spartans to get the ball back with a 68-67 lead. Cassius Winston, now infamously, was able to slither away from Duke to avoid a foul and run out the clock, ceiling the Elite 8 win for Michigan State.

You can watch the last seven minutes of that game here:

Wisconsin win over Purdue in 2000 Elite 8 is more relevant than ever

A game which still resonates

It is noticeable how much literature we at Badgers Wire have devoted to the 2000 West Regional final between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Purdue Boilermakers.

We have looked at this game from all sorts of angles, and the ceremony honoring the 2000 Final Four team in the Kohl Center on February 9 gave us a good reason to say even more about the 2000 Purdue game which lifted the Badgers to their first Final Four in 59 years.

As we have reflected on classic Badger moments from past NCAA Tournaments this month, consider all the ways in which the 2000 win over Purdue in Albuquerque still resonates, 20 years later.

When you realize how long it took Bo Ryan to make the Final Four (13 years), one appreciates the value and meaning of the win over Purdue, which gave Dick Bennett his only Final Four after many years in coaching… and denied Gene Keady what would have been his first Final Four after two decades of coaching.

When you realize that one of Wisconsin’s less talented teams just won the 2020 Big Ten championship, the example of the 2000 team — which similarly had a lot of blue-collar workers and no superstars — becomes an enduring manifestation of the values and principles which have fueled Wisconsin’s rise and continued excellence under several head coaches.

When you realize that Virginia beating Purdue last year in the Elite Eight — which led to a national championship — will not be replaced by a new championship moment in 2020, it becomes apparent that college basketball will continue to reflect on a member of the Bennett family beating a member of Gene Keady’s coaching tree, Matt Painter. “Bennett over Purdue” won’t quickly recede into the history books. It will get another year to breathe, as Virginia remains defending champion and Tony Bennett gets a chance to reload.

Wisconsin and Dick Bennett beating Purdue and Gene Keady in the Elite Eight 20 years ago was a central part of the college basketball conversation last March because of the Virginia-Purdue Elite Eight game which called it to mind. After Wisconsin won an unlikely Big Ten title in 2020, and the 2000 Final Four team was honored, it is as though that win over Purdue in Albuquerque doesn’t want to fade away. For a game played 20 years ago, it owns a lot of prominence — certainly more than most.
