Falcons rule out two starters for Sunday’s game vs. Chargers

The Falcons have ruled out CB A.J. Terrell and LG Elijah Wilkinson for Sunday’s game against the Chargers.

The Atlanta Falcons will be without two starters when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 9. On Friday, the team ruled out cornerback A.J. Terrell and left guard Elijah Wilkinson, both of whom missed all three days of practice this week.

Terrell will miss his second game in a row with a hamstring injury. In his absence, the Falcons could look to CB Rashad Fenton, who was acquired from Kansas City in a trade at the deadline.

As for Wilkinson, he’s been battling a knee for some time. Backup center Matt Hennessy has been filling in all week at left guard, so look for him to get the start on Sunday.

Cordarrelle Patterson has been designated to return, but the Falcons will wait until Saturday to decide if they should activate him for Week 9. Check back for the full Friday injury report following today’s practice.

Falcons CB A.J. Terrell misses 2nd practice in a row

#Falcons CB A.J. Terrell and LG Elijah Wilkinson missed their second straight practice on Thursday

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Carolina Panthers in Week 8 to stay atop the NFC South, and they did so without two of their best players. But while RB Cordarrelle Patterson is on the verge of returning from the injured reserve list, things are less clear regarding the status of CB A.J. Terrell.

On Thursday, Terrell missed his second practice in a row due to a severe hamstring injury. Starting left guard Elijah Wilkinson was also out for the second straight day recovering from a knee injury.

Safety Jaylinnn Hawkins, who missed Week 8 due to a concussion, has practiced in full the past two days. Check out Atlanta’s full Thursday injury report below.

Falcons LG Elijah Wilkinson to return Wednesday

The Falcons expect starting LG Elijah Wilkinson to return to practice on Wednesday.

The Atlanta Falcons got their first win of the season on Sunday, and they did so without their starting left guard.

Elijah Wilkinson did not play in Week 3 due to a personal matter, but as Josh Kendall of The Athletic reported, the team is expecting Wilkinson to return to practice Wednesday.

Wilkinson has been a pleasant surprise this season after beating out Jalen Mayfield for the starting left guard spot during training camp. In Week 3, the Falcons called upon reserve guard Colby Gossett to fill in for Wilkinson.

Gossett played well in his spot sport as the Falcons ran the ball all over the Seahawks during Sunday’s 27-23 win in Seattle. Running back Cordarrelle Patterson rushed for a career-high 141 yards and the offense racked up 386 yards of total offense.

While Gossett will likely return to the bench in Week 4, he prides himself on staying prepared to play at any moment.

Free-agent OL Elijah Wilkinson says he’s signing with Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have signed free-agent offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson, per the free agent’s Instagram account.

The Atlanta Falcons appear to have signed former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson, according to a post the free agent shared from his personal Instagram page Thursday afternoon.

Wilkinson, 27, is a five-year NFL veteran who spent last season in Chicago. The former Massachusetts standout played his first four years in Denver and has has experience at both guard and tackle.

In 2021, Wilkinson started just one game for the Bears, but he has 27 career starts under his belt. The team has yet to confirm the signing, although it’s pretty clear from Wilkinson’s picture that he’s already put his signature on the dotted line.

Stay tuned for contract details.

Bears OT Elijah Wilkinson activated from reserve/COVID-19 list

There’s finally some good news on the COVID-19 front for the Bears with OT Elijah Wilkinson being activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

There’s finally some good news on the COVID-19 front for the Chicago Bears, who have been hit hard over the last few days, where players like wide receiver Allen Robinson, safety Eddie Jackson and nose tackle Eddie Goldman have landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Offensive tackle Elijah Wilkinson has been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list, the team announced Friday. With offensive tackle Larry Borom on the COVID list and left tackle Jason Peters sidelined with a high ankle sprain, Wilkinson will likely see the field this week, be it at left or right tackle.

Chicago also signed defensive back Michael Jospeh to the practice squad, where there’s a chance he’ll be flexed to the game-day roster on Monday.

The Bears are one of seven teams in enhanced COVID protocols, which also included their Week 15 opponent in the Minnesota Vikings. Chicago now has 11 players currently on the COVID list.

On Thursday, all three coordinators — Bill Lazor, Sean Desai and Chris Tabor — were also placed on the COVID list, which puts their statuses for Monday night in jeopardy.

Bears activate Robert Quinn, Elijah Wilkinson from reserve/COVID-19 list

Things are looking up for the Bears with the returns of Robert Quinn and Elijah Wilkinson from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

After a rough couple of weeks, there’s finally some good news for the Chicago Bears as outside linebacker Robert Quinn and right tackle Elijah Wilkinson have been activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Quinn landed on the COVID list back on Oct. 19, which forced him to miss last Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Wilkinson landed on the list just before that Bucs game, as well.

This is great news for a Bears team facing a must-win situation as they welcome the San Francisco 49ers to town on Halloween. With outside linebacker Khalil Mack trending toward missing Sunday’s game as he continues to nurse that foot injury that’s bothered him since Week 3, getting Quinn back is a huge relief. Quinn has 5.5 sacks on the season, which ranks 12th in the NFL, and it should boost Chicago’s pass rush.

Following uncertainty on the offensive line, the Bears look good to go at right tackle, depending on how they choose to go. While Wilkinson is back, rookie Larry Borom made him return to practice this week after being activated off injured reserve. He has 21 days to return to the lineup, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get the start against the 49ers.

With Quinn and Wilkinson being activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list, that leaves tight end Jimmy Graham, head coach Matt Nagy, wide receivers coach Mike Furrey and another Bears staff member sidelined.

If Nagy isn’t cleared before Sunday’s game, it’ll be special teams coordinator Chris Tabor serving as the acting head coach against the 49ers.

Bears place Elijah Wilkinson, Caleb Johnson on reserve/COVID-19 list

The Bears have an NFL-high four players on the reserve/COVID-19 list after Elijah Wilkinson and Caleb Johnson landed on the list Sunday.

The reserve/COVID-19 list is getting crowded for the Chicago Bears as they placed right tackle Elijah Wilkinson and linebacker Caleb Johnson on the list ahead of today’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Chicago has flexed Arlington Hambright from the practice squad to the active roster in place of Wilkinson, who was already filling in for an injured Germain Ifedi, who’s on injured reserve.

With Wilkinson out, look for either Lachavious Simmons or Alex Bars to start at right tackle against one of the NFL’s best defensive fronts.

The Bears have an NFL-high four players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, according to Brad Biggs, which doesn’t include wide receivers coach Mike Furrey, who remains sidelined.

Running back Damien Williams was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list on Saturday, and he’s expected to play against the Bucs.

6 takeaways from Bears’ preseason loss to the Bills

From Justin Fields earning reps with starters to concerns on defense and special teams, here’s our takeaways from the Bears’ loss to Bills.

For much of Saturday afternoon, the Chicago Bears played uninspiring football in their 41-15 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills. The starting offense struggled to get anything going, sans one big play from quarterback Andy Dalton. Meanwhile, Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky got the revenge he was seeking against the Bears defense, putting on a show for his former team as he got the start for Buffalo.

The second half was better for both sides of the ball as rookie quarterback Justin Fields looked great in sports with his arm and his legs, but also struggled due to the lack of protection on the offensive line. The defense, meanwhile, was able to create a few turnovers against the Buffalo reserves after getting gashed in the first half.

All in all, though, it wasn’t a pretty day on the lakefront and with just one preseason game left, the Bears have a lot of questions to answer in a short amount of time. Here are my takeaways from Saturday’s preseason game.

10 Bears players to watch during Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Bills

As the Bears prepare for their second preseason game, here are the players we’ll be keeping an eye on against the Bills.

Week two of the preseason is officially underway and the Chicago Bears are once again welcoming an AFC East opponent to Soldier Field. Last week, it was the Miami Dolphins and Saturday it will be the Buffalo Bills.

The headline story here is easily the return of former Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who is now the backup in Buffalo behind Pro Bowl passer Josh Allen. Trubisky will get the start, however, and should see plenty of reps against his former team as the Bears continue to get rookie quarterback Justin Fields acclimated to the NFL. But aside from that quarterback angle, who else should we be paying attention to when the game kicks off at noon on Saturday?

Here are 10 players on the Bears that I’m keeping my eye on in their second preseason game.

6 takeaways from Bears’ first unofficial depth chart

The Bears have released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of their preseason opener, and there was plenty to unpack.

The Chicago Bears released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. But before the Bears and Dolphins square off on Saturday at Soldier Field, the two will hold a couple of joint practices at Halas Hall.

When looking at Chicago’s first unofficial depth chart, there are some things that aren’t much of a surprise — Andy Dalton being listed as the starting quarterback and the Bears’ top wide receivers listed as Allen Robinson, Darnell Mooney and Marquise Goodwin. But there are also plenty of surprises.

Here’s what we learned from the Bears’ first unofficial depth chart:
