Justin Simmons isn’t the only ex-Bronco returning to Denver this week

Justin Simmons will return to Denver this week. He’ll be joined by three other former Broncos players who now play for the Falcons.

The Denver Broncos are set to host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in a game that will mark veteran safety Justin Simmons’ return to Empower Field at Mile High.

Simmons, 30, was released by the Broncos this spring in a move that saved the team $14.5 million in salary cap space. He signed with the Falcons in August.

A four-time second-team All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, Simmons is the most notable player returner to Denver this week. But he’s not the only ex-Bronco who now plays in Atlanta.

The Falcons also have former Denver offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson plus practice squad wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and cornerback Lamar Jackson, who just signed with Atlanta earlier this week.

Wilkinson played for the Broncos from 2017-2020, starting 26 games. Dorsett spent last season on Denver’s practice squad and Jackson spent time with the Broncos in 2022.

Simmons ranks seventh on Denver’s all-time interceptions list (30), and he has one interception with the Falcons this season.

Ex-Broncos third-round draft pick works out for Cardinals

The Cardinals worked out McTelvin Agim, the Falcons signed Elijah Wilkinson and the Lions promoted Tim Patrick to the active roster today.

The Arizona Cardinals brought in former Denver Broncos defensive lineman McTelvin Agim for a workout on Tuesday, according to KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson.

Agim (6-3, 300 pounds) was picked by the Broncos in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Arkansas. He recorded eight tackles in ten games as a rookie and four tackles and 1.5 sacks in seven games in 2021. After failing to make the team’s 53-man roster in 2022, he spent most of that season on the practice squad before being released in December.

Since being cut by the Broncos, the 26-year-old Agim has spent time with the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts. He played in one game with the Colts last fall, recording two tackles.

Elsewhere on the ex-Denver player front, the Atlanta Falcons signed former Broncos lineman Elijah Wilkinson to their active roster on Tuesday and the Detroit Lions promoted wide receiver Tim Patrick from the practice squad to their 53-man roster ahead of Week 4.

Falcons may be without starting OL Kaleb McGary, Drew Dalman vs. Saints

The Falcons could be without starting right tackle Kaleb McGary and center Drew Dalman for their Week 4 matchup with the Saints:

A couple of key Atlanta Falcons offensive linemen could miss Week 4’s game with the New Orleans Saints. Right tackle Kaleb McGary went down in Week 3’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs with what is believed to  be  a sprained MCL, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The severity of that knee injury is to be determined, but McGary’s status for next week’s game against the Saints is very much in doubt.

That’s also true of Falcons center Drew Dalman, who Rapoport reports is going to miss some time with a high-ankle sprain. So that’s two starters down from an offensive line tasked with protecting Kirk Cousins, one of the least-mobile quarterbacks in the NFL this year. Who could replace them?

Backup tackle Elijah Wilkinson filled in for McGary on the right side in Sunday night’s loss, however McGary is a premier player and will most definitely be missed if he ends up sitting out on a few games. So far this season he only allowed one sack and five pressures with no penalties against him, which is pretty impressive given he played against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles.

As for the center? It was Ryan Neuzil stepping in for Dalman. The fourth-year pro has only started four games at the NFL level, so that could be a matchup Bryan Bresee and the Saints’ interior rotation can take advantage of. The Falcons will be hoping to lean on Bijan Robinson just like the Eagles relied on Saquon Barkley against thee Saints, so it’s vital that Dennis Allen’s defensive line win their battles up front, no matter who is in front of them.

6 ex-Broncos will face Denver in Week 3 of NFL preseason

Six former Broncos players will return to Empower Field at Mile High to play against their former team on Sunday.

A half-dozen ex-Denver Broncos players will return to Empower Field at Mile High to play against their former team on Sunday.

The Arizona Cardinals have six ex-Broncos on their roster — two on offense, two on defense and two on special teams. Denver is set to host Arizona in Sunday’s preseason finale.

Cardinals offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of UMass in 2017. He dressed for 45 games in four years in Denver, earning 26 starts moving between guard and tackle.

Arizona running back Tony Jones went to training camp with the Broncos last summer but did not make the squad after preseason.

Cardinals defensive back Delonte Hood spent time on Denver’s practice squad in 2022 before being released in 2023.

Arizona cornerback Michael Ojemudia was picked by the Broncos in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Iowa. He played in 21 games with 12 starts from 2020-2022 before being waived.

Cardinals long snapper Aaron Brewer landed in Denver as an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State in 2012. He spent four years as the team’s long snapper before being released in 2016.

Arizona kicker Matt Prater played for the Broncos from 2007-2014, converting a then-NFL record 64-yard field goal in 2013. Denver replaced Prater with Brandon McManus during the 2014 season.

Sunday’s game will be nationally televised on CBS.

2024 Cardinals roster preview: OL Elijah Wilkinson

We will preview every player on the Cardinals’ roster heading into training camp. This is about offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson.

The Arizona Cardinals will open training camp July 23 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.

Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2023, questions they face and their roster outlook.

Next up is offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson.

Background

Wilkinson enters his second season with the Cardinals and his eighth in the NFL.

He went undrafted in 2017 out of UMass by the Denver Broncos , made the team and played four seasons for them, appearing in 45 games, starting 26 at tackle and guard.

He played a season for the Chicago Bears in 2021 and then one for the Atlanta Falcons in 2022 before signing a one-year deal with the Cardinals last year. He re-signed on a one-year deal this offseason.

In his career, he has played in 77 games, starting 45 at right tackle and both guard positions.

65 days till the Cardinals’ season opener against the Bills

Guard Elijah Wilkinson is No. 65, who has been a reasonably impactful player.

We hope you had a lovely 4th of July as we start our Friday in this NFL offseason. We continue to count down to the start of the 2024 season. The Arizona Cardinals open the season on September 8 on the road against the Buffalo Bills. That is in 65 days.

The Cardinals’ currently No. 65 is offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson.

Wilkinson is on the team for the second straight year. He signed a one-year contract last year and signed another one-year deal this offseason.

He would be the most recent reasonably impactful No. 65 the team has had. He played in 10 games last season, starting nine at left guard. He was arguably the weakest link of the starting linemen but the Cardinals liked him enough to re-sign him.

He is almost assured a spot on the team as his 2024 salary is fully guaranteed, but his role is less certain. Able to play guard and tackle, he probably will be a backup this year.

The most recent impactful No. 65 before Wilkinson was a while ago. You would have to go back to tackle Anthony Clement, who played for the Cardinals from 1998-2004.

We will continue the countdown tomorrow.

Complete contract details, salary cap breakdown for OL Elijah Wilkinson

We have the details for OL Elijah Wilkinson’s one-year deal to return to the Cardinals.

It has been said there’s very little rest for the weary in the NFL, and that’s especially the case at this time of the year.

The transactions have been in the hundreds around the league in the first week of the 2024 league year and the Cardinals have been a big part of that.

Eleven players have been re-signed and another eight added that ended the 2023 season on another team. The total includes four players re-signed prior to the official opening of the league year on Wednesday: wide receiver Greg Dortch, defensive end L.J. Collier, linebacker Jesse Luketa and tackle/guard Carter O’Donnell.

Prior to Saturday, we reported on the contract details for 11 players. Cards Wire learned the numbers for another six today, leaving only wide receiver Chris Moore and defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga with unknown figures.

The six are punter Blake Gillikin, long snapper Aaron Brewer, offensive linemen Elijah Wilkinson, Trystan Colon and Keith Ismael and cornerback Bobby Price.

Elijah Wilkinson contract, salary cap details

Wilkinson signed a one-year contract worth $1.825 million with $1.575 million guaranteed. Those guarantees include a $325,000 signing bonus plus his $1.125 million salary. There are also roster bonuses of $14,706 per game for a maximum total of $250,000.

Only 10 games of those roster bonuses count against the cap, making the cap charge $1.722 million this year.

Wilkinson opened the 2023 season as the starter at left guard and ended up playing 10 games with nine starts, while being inactive for one game. He suffered a neck injury and was placed on injured reserve Oct. 28 before returning to practice on Nov. 29 and being activated Dec. 16.

There were several games where he shared snaps with Colon. In all, he played 74 percent of the offensive snaps.

Cardinals activate OL Elijah Wilkinson, don’t elevate anyone from practice squad

Wilkinson had been injured since Week 6. He could return to the starting lineup at left guard.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a single roster move on Saturday to prepare them for their Week 15 home matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. They activated offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson from injured reserve.

Wilkinson has been out since Week 6 with a neck injury. He started the first six games of the season at left guard. The Cardinals have had three other starters there since he got hurt.

It could mean a return to the starting lineup for him or he could back up Trystan Colon.

They did not elevate any player form the practice squad as they are permitted to. That signifies that they are healthy enough at cornerback and other positions that they don’t need the extra bodies.

Cardinals designate OL Elijah Wilkinson to return from IR

Wilkinson, after starting the first six games of the year at left guard, has missed the last six weeks with a neck injury.

The Arizona Cardinals could return to some stability at left guard this week as they face the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road in Week 13. The team announced Wednesday that offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson was designated to return from injured reserve.

The move opens a 21-day window allowing him to begin practicing again. He must be activated and placed on the active roster again by the end of the 21-day window or he must remain on IR for the remainder of the season.

Wilkinson was the Cardinals’ starting left guard for the first six games of the season. He suffered a neck injury and missed the last six games, spending the last five on IR.

Since he last played, left guard has been a revolving door. Trystan Colon replaced him initially and might have replaced Wilkinson even if he had not gotten hurt. Colon got hurt, which led to Dennis Daley starting once and then Daley was replaced by Carter O’Donnell, who started the last three weeks.

O’Donnell was replaced in the second half by Colon in the team’s 37-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. That might have been because of injury, because of play or simply to give Colon reps in a blowout loss.

If Wilkinson is activated this week, expect to see it in Saturday’s roster moves when the Cardinals also announced what players are elevated from the practice squad.
