Chargers roster bubble: Which players helped their cause in Week 1

The Chargers’ win over the Rams in Week 1 of the preseason had standout performances from bubble breakouts trying to make the roster.

The Chargers’ 34-17 win over the Rams in Week 1 of the preseason had several standout performances from bubble breakouts trying to make the roster.

There’s still a long way to go for the players toward the end of the roster in this preseason process, but the Rams game could serve as a springboard for some of them.

Chargers waive RB Larry Rountree III

The Chargers running back room is beginning to take shape.

The Chargers running back room is beginning to take shape.

After a breakout performance from undrafted rookie Elijah Dotson in Saturday’s preseason game against the Rams, Los Angeles waived Larry Rountree III, their sixth-round pick in 2021. Rountree was RB4 on the depth chart behind Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley, and Isaiah Spiller. He struggled on Saturday, with five carries for just 9 yards, despite an overall stellar performance by the Chargers on the ground.

Rountree played in 16 games over two seasons in Los Angeles, logging 49 carries for 106 yards and one touchdown. He also added three receptions for 13 yards. The Missouri product was also a key contributor on special teams.

In his absence, Dotson likely takes over as the RB4 and will need to continue to prove himself to convince the Chargers to keep four running backs and fullback Zander Horvath on the 53-man roster.

5 takeaways from Chargers’ 34-17 preseason win over Rams

Here’s what stood out from the Chargers’ preseason victory over the Rams.

The Chargers started their preseason with a victory in the Battle for LA, beating the Rams 34-17.

It was our first look at the latest version of the Bolts, featuring a new offense helmed by Kellen Moore and a revamped defense with Derrick Ansley at the helm.

What stood out? Here are my takeaways:

Michigan football gets prediction for in-state 3-star ATH

Gotta get these in-state guys. #GoBlue

Recruiting hasn’t exactly gone to plan for Michigan football in the past few weeks.

Sure, there have been some wins — edge rushers Elias Rudolph, Devon Baxter, and Dominic Nichols all pledged — but the Wolverines have lost more than they’ve gained in terms of players expected at one point to be in the 2024 class.

The maize and blue are working to rejuvenate the 2024 class, but are also working on 2025. And one such player in the latter is looking more and more like he could end up choosing his home-state Wolverines.

Hailing from Detroit (Mich.) University of Detroit Jesuit, Elijah Dotson is a three-star prospect rated the No. 351 player nationally per the 247Sports Composite. He’s listed as an athlete though he’s known more as a wide receiver. The No. 8 player in the state of Michigan in 2025, Dotson was just predicted by 247Sports’ Allen Trieu to end up wearing a winged helmet.

As of current, Dotson has offers from the likes of Kansas, Louisville, Penn State, Pitt, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Steve Clinkscale is his primary recruiter for Michigan football.

Penn State extends offer to rising 2025 receiver

Penn State sent a Class of 2025 visitor off from a visit with a scholarship offer

Penn State is looking to make some early movement on the Class of 2025, a full year out from that recruiting cycle taking the total spotlight. And it seems Penn State made sure one receiver on the radar left a visit to State College with an offer in hand.

[autotag]Elijah Dotson[/autotag], from Detroit, Michigan, announced, via Twitter, he has received a scholarship offer from the Nittany Lions. While not the first power conference offer on the table for Dotson, it is the first Big Ten offer to come his way.

The 6′-2″, 175-pound receiver from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School, who has no relation to former Penn State wide receiver Jahan Dotson, is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals. No other recruiting rankings from the other recruiting services have been shared at this time, but he is clearly on a path to receiving more recruiting hype moving forward.

Penn State’s Class of 2025 has one commitment on the board with offensive tackle Jaelyn Matthews from New Jersey.
