Breaking: Former Stanford running back EJ Smith commits to Texas A&M in transfer portal

The son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith is coming home to the Lone Star State after choosing the Aggies in the transfer portal.

The son of a Pro Football Hall of Famer is coming home to the Lone Star State.

According to a report from Jason Howell of TexAgs, former Stanford senior running back EJ Smith has committed to Texas A&M in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Smith is the son of NFL legend Emmitt Smith who spent most of his career with the Dallas Cowboys and remains the league’s all-time leading rusher (18,355 yards).

The 6-foot, 210-pound halfback entered the portal on Nov. 28 and received an offer from head coach Mike Elko on Dec. 19. Smith was a 4-star recruit in 2020 coming out of Jesuit High School in Dallas.

As noted by Billy Liucci of TexAgs, Smith “was a coveted target” for former coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff four years ago. He will now suit up for the Aggies and play for Elko and running backs coach Trooper Taylor.

Additionally, Smith’s older sister Rheagen Smith played forward and midfielder for the Texas A&M women’s soccer team from 2017 to 2020.

Texas A&M offers former Stanford RB E.J. Smith

Texas A&M and HC Mike Elko have offered former Stanford running back E.J. Smith, the son of Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith.

Now, this is a piece of news to keep an eye on, as Texas A&M has re-offered former Standford running back E.J. Smith from the transfer portal as the talented son of Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith is looking for a new home after four seasons with the Cardinal.

A former four-star prospect in the 2019 recruiting class, then Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher was very close to landing Smith, who ranked as a Top 5 all-purpose back out of Dallas, Texas. Throughout the entirety of Smith’s Stanford career, injuries and poor usage have kept the once-promising recruit from reaching his full potential.

From 2019-2023, Smith appeared in 24 games and only completed a full 12-game season in 2023, accumulating a total of 557 yards and five touchdowns on the ground with a 5.1 rush per attempt average. Smith recorded 59 receptions through the air for 386 yards and just one touchdown.

Smith is currently ranked as the 33rd running back in On3’s transfer portal player rankings and has one year of eligibility remaining. While A&M’s running back stable is all but set heading into the 2024 season, Smith’s ability as a receiver is too intriguing to pass up.

Son of Gator great, Pro Football Hall of Famer enters transfer portal

Emmitt Smith’s son showed a lot of potential despite battling injuries, but it is unlikely to be space for him on Florida’s roster in 2024.

Running back [autotag]EJ Smith[/autotag], the son of all-time Gator great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, has entered the NCAA transfer portal after spending four years with the Stanford Cardinals. Thanks to a redshirt his freshman year, he retains one year of eligibility as a collegiate senior.

The younger Smith chose the Cardinals over the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs and Texas A&M Aggies in 2020 in a reveal ceremony that had UF fans on the edge of their seats.

The running back was mired by injuries during his time at Stanford, playing in just 24 games over those four years. However, when he was on the field, he gave glimpses of a talent that could have risen to the top of the Pac-12 had he not faced those hurdles.

During his time in northern California, Smith amassed 555 career rushing yards along with five touchdowns on 5.1 yards per carry, adding 59 catches for 242 yards and a score through the air as well.

Is he an option for the Gators? It seems unlikely with the inevitable return of Montrell Johnson combined with the presence of rising star Trevor Etienne and the up-and-coming Treyaun Webb. Between the three — plus the incoming freshmen — there probably will not be enough touches to lure Smith for his final season of eligibility.

Stanford loses running back for the season

Tough year only getting tougher for Stanford

Notre Dame is just over two weeks away from hosting Stanford in a night contest that, for all intents and purposes, shouldn’t be much of a game. That likelihood probably just grew a slight bit because Stanford will make the trek to South Bend without running back E.J. Smith.

Smith, the sun of NFL all-time leading rusher Emmitt Smith, will be out the remainder of the season with an undisclosed injury according to Cardinal head coach David Shaw.

Smith had a big start to the season, rushing for 206 yards on 30 carries, finishing with three touchdowns. He hasn’t played since, however, and will not play the rest of 2022.

Stanford was already playing from behind; it is 1-2 with blowout losses to both USC and Washington. Its only victory was against Colgate.

The David Shaw-led program isn’t too far removed from being a West Coast powerhouse. It had four top-10 finishes between 2010 and 2015 but hasn’t finished a year ranked at all since 2017.

With what appears to be another long fall ahead for Shaw and Stanford, you wonder how much longer he’ll be given to lead the Cardinal program.
