Can Texas A&M overcome RB Le’Veon Moss’s season ending injury?

Amari Daniels and EJ Smith will need to step up over the next three games

Texas A&M’s perfect record in the SEC standings evaporated in the second half of Saturday’s 44-20 loss to South Carolina, as the Aggies were outscored and outplayed on the road in the most lopsided SEC matchup under first-year head coach Mike Elko.

Things got worse two days after the loss, as it was revealed that star running back Le’Veon Moss would miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a knee injury in the first half of Saturday’s game. On Monday, Elko spoke to the media, revealing Moss’s diagnosis while noting just how well the junior had performed before the news:

“Same thing happened with Tyreek (Chappell). When you see young people turn a corner… You hate for anyone to see adversity, but you hate to see it for those kids. You would like to reward them with a clean path.”

“It’s extremely unfortunate for him. He was having a great year.”

The Aggies still have everything in front of them, tied for first place in the SEC standings at 5-1 entering the bye week, knowing that wins against New Mexico State and Auburn (on the road) will set up a likely play-in scenario vs. Texas for a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Texas A&M’s RB room suffered a significant blow due to its paper-thin depth. Junior Amari Daniels and senior EJ Smith are the only scholarship backs on the roster, with Moss now shelved.

“I think we will try to look at everything on the table. We are confident in Amari (Daniels). EJ (Smith) will be the primary backup. At this point, everything is on the table.”

While Daniels, who has already run for 466 yards and six touchdowns, is more than skilled enough to take over, saving his touches is key down the stretch, meaning freshman athlete Terry Bussey could see snaps at running back, as Elko alluded to during the Monday presser:

“Terry (Bussey) is talented… Understanding he is still a freshman, that is maybe lost a little bit.”

“He is effective in the role he’s in, and we are trying to expand that role.”

Realistically, after the bye week, Daniels and Smith will take most of the running back snaps vs. New Mexico State in what is hopefully a short day for both players. At the same time, walk-on RB Anthony DiNota should also see time against the Aggies before Daniels and Smith play nearly every running back snap vs. Auburn and Texas.

Texas A&M’s running game has vastly improved compared to last season

Texas A&M’s running game has been borderline elite in the last two weeks

Texas A&M’s 33-20 SEC road win over the Florida Gators was critical for many reasons, starting with the fact that the Aggies had not won a conference road game in over three seasons, while head coach Mike Elko earned his first SEC win.

In a game dominated by the Aggie offense, the quarterback drama regarding starter Conner Weigman’s shoulder injury led to backup Marcel Reed making his first career start. The redshirt freshman’s poise and athleticism helped open up the playbook for OC Collin Klein.

While Reed was excellent from the pocket, A&M’s running game dominated the day, rushing for 310 yards, including 84 from Reed. In comparison, junior running backs Le’Veon Moss and Amari Daniels accounted for 178 yards on 31 carries.

The Aggies eclipsed 300-plus yards rushing for the second straight weekend, mainly due to better run blocking and Klein’s scheme. After three weeks of play, Texas A&M’s rushing attack is ranked 9th nationally with 263 yards per game, ranked as the second SEC team behind Tennessee, ranked 3rd with 333 per contest.

Three weeks of play isn’t a large enough sample size to say that this group is elite, but compared to last season’s 90th-ranked unit, only averaging 136 yards per game, this is a huge improvement under Klein and O-line coach Adam Cushing.

So far this season, Texas A&M has run for 787 yards for 6.02 yards per rush, and seven rushing touchdowns.

Texas A&M will host Bowling Green on Saturday, Sept. 21. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.

Initial injury report ahead of Texas A&M vs. Florida

Ahaed of facing the Florida Gators on Saturday, here is the updated injury report for both teams

Texas A&M (1-1) will face the Florida Gators (1-1) in the Aggies’ first true road test of the 2024 season. The program has failed to secure an SEC road victory since the 2021 season.

Under head coach Mike Elko, the first two games have left more question marks than answers, though progress has been made from starting quarterback Conner Weigman after his career-low performance in the opening season loss to Notre Dame.

After it was revealed that Elko will now prepare to face a two-quarterback system once they arrive in Gainsville, the latest injury report has revealed that Texas A&M should be at nearly full strength. At the same time, Florida QB Graham Mertz will attempt to return from a concussion.

Senior wide receiver Jabre Barber, who returned to the lineup after missing the entire offseason due to injury, played eight snaps to test his playing health. Without recording a reception, Elko stated on Monday that Barber, despite being listed as a backup behind starting slot WR Cyrus Allen, should return to full strength by the time Texas A&M plays Arkansas on Sept. 28.

“Still a couple of weeks away. We kind of targeted the Arkansas game as the right timing, and it’s probably still that.”

Concerning linebacker Scooby Williams and running back EJ Smith, both players sat out of last Saturday’s win for precautionary reasons and will be available vs. Florida.

Texas A&M will travel to Gainsville to take on the Florida Gators on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ABC.

Updated injury report following Texas A&M’s win against McNeese State on Saturday

Texas A&M’s 52-10 win over McNeese State resulted in a mostly healthy roster heading into next weekend

Texas A&M’s week 2 52-10 victory over McNeese State also served as the first win for new head coach Mike Elko, as last weekend’s disappointing loss to Notre Dame didn’t look any better after the Irish fell to Northern Illinois a week later.

Nevertheless, The Aggies looked like the team we all thought they were entering the season, scoring on eight consecutive drives for the first time since 2011.

Starting quarterback Conner Weigman looked much better after his career-low performance against Notre Dame, but still only threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns in just two-quarters of play due to the large advantage. However, the redshirt sophomore made better decisions, and his accuracy and usually impressive touch returned to their regular form.

Before the game, it was reported that linebacker Scooby Williams and running back EJ Smith would sit out for undisclosed reasons. At the same time, senior wide receiver Jabre Barber returned to the lineup.

During the game, senior wide receiver Jahdae Walker injured his hand and, for precautionary reasons, was held out of the game but should be good to go for the Florida game. One name to keep an eye on is defensive end Enai White, who will reportedly stay on the sideline until further notice as he continues to rehab.

Texas A&M WR Jabre Barber will reportedly suit up vs. McNeese State

Jabre Barber could see the field vs. McNeese State

Just minutes before Texas A&M will face McNeese State in week 2 of the 2024 college football season, several players will not suit up for the game, while one of the head coach Mike Elko’s critical transfer portal additions is dressed out for the first time this season.

Ahead of the 11:45 a.m. kickoff, it has been reported that former Troy wide receiver Jabre Barber is suited up while participating in pre-game warmups. The senior is slated to see the field after missing most of the offseason due to injury.

On Wednesday, head coach Mike Elko revealed that Barber was quickly progressing in rehab but didn’t provide a specific timeline. Well, this weekend was the return date, after all.

During his final season with Troy, Barber recorded 75 receptions, 999 yards, and five touchdowns. He possesses the quickness and versatility needed to contribute to the receiving game this season and provide starting quarterback Conner Weigman with another receiving weapon.

Concerning the players that won’t dress out, junior linebacker Scooby Williams and senior running back EJ Smith will miss the game for undisclosed reasons.

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko releases statment regarding Rueben Owen’s reported injury

Mike Elko will provide a more concise answer during the next media availability

As reported by ESPN’s Max Olson on Sunday afternoon, Texas A&M sophomore running back Rueben Owens is expected to miss the 2024 regular season after sustaining a lower-body injury during Saturday’s closed scrimmage.

This resulted in an immediate reaction from the Aggie fan base, and hearing from the head coach about the manner is all that matters going forward. GigEm247’s Carter Karels also noted that no official timetable regarding Owen’s injury has been set outside the season-ending expectation.

However, just hours after the news broke, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko released a brief statement about the reported injury. The next team press conference is set for Saturday, August 17.

“Rueben Owens suffered a lower leg injury in our scrimmage on Saturday (Aug. 10). I will address his injury at my next media availability.”

Without speculating, Olson’s reporting on the situation should be trusted. If Owen’s is truly lost for the entire season, Texas A&M is now down to three scholarship running backs, including Amari Daniels and Le’Veon Moss, while former Stanford versatile running back EJ Smith.

Texas A&M’s running back room after Rueben Owens’s season ending injury

With Rueben Owens now sidelined, Texas A&M will rely on three scholarship running backs

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko was dealt a significant blow this weekend. ESPN’s Max Olson reported that sophomore running back Rueben Owens, who was slated to earn a starting spot this fall, is expected to miss the season after suffering a lower-body injury. However, an official timetable has yet to be revealed.

Suddenly thin in the backfield, Elko and new offensive coordinator Collin Klein will have to rely on three scholarship backs, including juniors Le’Veon Moss, Amari Daniels, and former Stanford RB and son of Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, EJ Smith, who now looks like one of the more important offseason acquisitions.

Owens, who was the No. 2-ranked running back prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, is by far one of the best athletes on the roster, as his versatility as a pass catcher will likely create a major hole in Klein’s scheme if one of the three backs listed can’t replicate his production.

Here is what each back offers from a skill perspective:

Amari Daniels

Daniels is a downhill runner with excellent balance and impressive second-level agility. After recording 105 carries for 532 yards and six touchdowns, Daniels possesses a workhorse mentality and will be relied on more than ever to move the chains in the rotation.

Le’Veon Moss

Moss’s recent injury issues cause some concern for the fan base, but let’s be clear: this young man is talented enough to carry the load if asked. Size, toughness, and impressive second-level acceleration likely make him the next man in Owen’s absence. In nine games last season, Moss recorded 484 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 96 carries.

EJ Smith

The son of former Dallas Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith, EJ Smith’s injury-riddled career at Stanford resulted in just 557 rushing yards and five touchdowns during his last four seasons. However, one intriguing stat during the 2023 campaign was in the passing game, as Smith hauled in 33 receptions and 242 receiving yards. Smith’s soft hands and route-running prowess will likely result in a large snap uptick as a versatile receiving back in certain packages.

Breaking: Former Stanford running back EJ Smith commits to Texas A&M in transfer portal

The son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith is coming home to the Lone Star State after choosing the Aggies in the transfer portal.

The son of a Pro Football Hall of Famer is coming home to the Lone Star State.

According to a report from Jason Howell of TexAgs, former Stanford senior running back EJ Smith has committed to Texas A&M in the NCAA Transfer Portal. Smith is the son of NFL legend Emmitt Smith who spent most of his career with the Dallas Cowboys and remains the league’s all-time leading rusher (18,355 yards).

The 6-foot, 210-pound halfback entered the portal on Nov. 28 and received an offer from head coach Mike Elko on Dec. 19. Smith was a 4-star recruit in 2020 coming out of Jesuit High School in Dallas.

As noted by Billy Liucci of TexAgs, Smith “was a coveted target” for former coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff four years ago. He will now suit up for the Aggies and play for Elko and running backs coach Trooper Taylor.

Additionally, Smith’s older sister Rheagen Smith played forward and midfielder for the Texas A&M women’s soccer team from 2017 to 2020.

Texas A&M offers former Stanford RB E.J. Smith

Texas A&M and HC Mike Elko have offered former Stanford running back E.J. Smith, the son of Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith.

Now, this is a piece of news to keep an eye on, as Texas A&M has re-offered former Standford running back E.J. Smith from the transfer portal as the talented son of Hall of Fame Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith is looking for a new home after four seasons with the Cardinal.

A former four-star prospect in the 2019 recruiting class, then Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher was very close to landing Smith, who ranked as a Top 5 all-purpose back out of Dallas, Texas. Throughout the entirety of Smith’s Stanford career, injuries and poor usage have kept the once-promising recruit from reaching his full potential.

From 2019-2023, Smith appeared in 24 games and only completed a full 12-game season in 2023, accumulating a total of 557 yards and five touchdowns on the ground with a 5.1 rush per attempt average. Smith recorded 59 receptions through the air for 386 yards and just one touchdown.

Smith is currently ranked as the 33rd running back in On3’s transfer portal player rankings and has one year of eligibility remaining. While A&M’s running back stable is all but set heading into the 2024 season, Smith’s ability as a receiver is too intriguing to pass up.

Son of Gator great, Pro Football Hall of Famer enters transfer portal

Emmitt Smith’s son showed a lot of potential despite battling injuries, but it is unlikely to be space for him on Florida’s roster in 2024.

Running back [autotag]EJ Smith[/autotag], the son of all-time Gator great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, has entered the NCAA transfer portal after spending four years with the Stanford Cardinals. Thanks to a redshirt his freshman year, he retains one year of eligibility as a collegiate senior.

The younger Smith chose the Cardinals over the Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs and Texas A&M Aggies in 2020 in a reveal ceremony that had UF fans on the edge of their seats.

The running back was mired by injuries during his time at Stanford, playing in just 24 games over those four years. However, when he was on the field, he gave glimpses of a talent that could have risen to the top of the Pac-12 had he not faced those hurdles.

During his time in northern California, Smith amassed 555 career rushing yards along with five touchdowns on 5.1 yards per carry, adding 59 catches for 242 yards and a score through the air as well.

Is he an option for the Gators? It seems unlikely with the inevitable return of Montrell Johnson combined with the presence of rising star Trevor Etienne and the up-and-coming Treyaun Webb. Between the three — plus the incoming freshmen — there probably will not be enough touches to lure Smith for his final season of eligibility.
