Texas A&M receiver Noah Thomas might see a lot of time in a new spot

Noah Thomas showed out while playing a majority of the spring game in the slot position

The cool thing about watching spring games, especially when there is a new coaching staff, is seeing how certain players are being used in a new system. With the games being open to the public, the play calling will no doubt be guarded, so personal groupings and alignments can give us an idea of what the coaches have been working on to this point.

One of the more interesting tidbits came from Carter Karels, who does a fantastic job covering the Aggies. He pointed out that junior wide receiver spent almost every single one of this spring game snaps from the slot positions. This really stood out because it was a significant increase percentage-wise over last season.

There must be something new offensive coordinator Collin Klein sees in Thomas’s skill set and size that made the move worth considering during the spring game. The initial conclusion is that it was a smart decision. Thomas hauled in 7 catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns on a rainy afternoon, with a few of those being contested attempts.

The 6-6 200-pound receiver has shown flashes of how good he can be when he gets the opportunities and has all the traits to develop into a No. 1 receiver this fall. Head coach Mike Elko is very high on him and believes he can maintain the progress so far; we can see big things from him.

“He has tremendous size. He has a large catch radius. He has gotten heathly. It will be important for him to have a strong summer. He has all the makings of a guy we can use as a top target.”
The sky is the limit for Thomas and we all got a glimpse of that on April 20.  With his size and athleticism, putting him in the slot would make him a match-up nightmare with any defender anywhere on the field. We hope to see more of the same when the Aggies suit up to face Notre Dame on August 31 at Kyle Field.

Texas A&M football team begins spring ball in less than 2 weeks with brand new coaching staff

“We have to develop them as men and then use their strengths to fit in and building around them,” said offensive coordinator Collin Klein.

The Texas A&M football team starts spring ball in less than two weeks on March 22 and it is quickly approaching.

Mike Elko officially begins his first season in College Station as head coach and brings a brand new staff with him. One of the key personnel is offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach Collin Klein, who will be a huge factor in whether or not junior quarterback Conner Weigman lives up to the Heisman hype.

Klein recently sat down for a Q&A with the Aggies’ social media team and Weigman had to love what his new OC had to say about what’s in store for Texas A&M this season at Kyle Field.

“You’re going to have a chance to be the best player in the country on the best team in the country year in and year out,” Klein proclaimed. “That’s what we’re going to build from the ground up and look out!”

‘Surrounded by an elite level staff’: Q&A with Texas A&M OC & QB coach Collin Klein

“You’re going to have a chance to be the best player in the country on the best team in the country year in and year out,” Klein proclaimed.

Texas A&M offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach Collin Klein recently sat down with the Aggie Football social media team for a brief Q&A and he had a lot to say about his first few months in College Station.

Question: First impressions of the program?

Answer: “I’ve been blown away. The level of support and resources that we’re able to provide our student-athletes here is truly second to none. It blows me away every day.”

Q: Why did you decide to come coach here?

A: “It was about the right people at the right time. I really felt that with coach Elko. Growing up in Colorado watching Big 12 (and) Big 8 football, having played against Texas A&M, being down here, having a little bit of familiarity with this place, the type of backbone and the people that are here.”

Q: Can you describe your type of offense?

A: “At the end of the day, this game has been and will always be about the players. Truly as much as it’s not my offense or my system, it’s me learning about our players, me learning and figuring out how they tick, how they think, what their strengths are. What are they weaknesses? How can we help develop them?

“I know what really excited me about this opportunity here with coach Elko was how he talked about discipline, accountability and development of our players and of our team. I think that’s really important to me is not just taking, plugging and playing. That’s not what it is.

“We have to develop them as players. We have to develop them as men and then use their strengths to fit in and building around them, because that’s where the game’s won and lost.”

Q: What makes this program special?

A: “Just even in my short time with coach Elko, I think you’re going to be surrounded by an elite level staff, elite level leadership. I think you’re going to have elite level support across the board from every avenue.

“You’re going to have a chance to be the best player in the country on the best team in the country year in and year out. That’s what we’re going to build from the ground up and look out!”

Ranking every SEC offensive coordinator ahead of spring football practices

Ahead of spring football practices, new offensive assistants coupled with returning veteran look to cement their scheme ahead of the 2024 season

The 2024 college footbal season, headlined by an exciting SEC schedule, changes are upon us, led by the expanded 12-team playoff structure which will create much needed parity within a sport that a handful of team has dominated throughout the last decade.

Led by the conference’s expansion, with Texas and Oklahoma set to join the SEC in July, recruiting, NIL, and the transfer portal will make their usual impact, and outside of every head coach, key assistants, especially the offensive coordinator will be depended on the steer the ship when called upon.

This offseason, a bevy of assistant changes throughout the SEC have been made, including new Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko hiring former Kansas State offensive coordinator Collin Klein to the same position, taking over for Bobby Petrino, who departed after Jimbo Fisher’s firing.

Even more entertaining, Petrino has returned to Arkansas as the program’s new OC, where, as you all remember, he served as the Razorbacks head coach for four successful seasons.

Taking a more comprehensive look at the entire conference, here are our complete SEC offensive coordinator rankings ahead of spring football practices this month.

NOTE: Mississippi State has yet to hire an offensive coordinator, and new head coach Jeff Lebby will likely serve in that role.

ESPN identifies Texas A&M’s quarterback room as its biggest strength entering 2024 season

“The upside of all those quarterbacks getting thrown into the fire due to injuries is that there’s now a solid QB room full of confidence.”

ESPN college football reporters identified the biggest strengths of college football’s top 25 teams on Wednesday.

Coming in at No. 25, Texas A&M‘s biggest strength entering the 2024 season is its quarterbacks, according to Dave Wilson.

“The Aggies have been trying to find the right man for the job since the departure of Kellen Mond in 2020, and Jimbo Fisher‘s complex offense — combined with a struggling offensive line — did them no favors,” Wilson wrote. “But the upside of all those quarterbacks getting thrown into the fire due to injuries is that there’s now a solid QB room full of confidence.

“Starter Conner Weigman threw for 979 yards, 8 TDs and 2 INTs in four starts with a 68.9 completion percentage. Unheralded Fresno State transfer Jaylen Henderson got the job after an injury to backup Max Johnson, and Henderson completed 67.9 percent for 715 yards and 6 TDs to 2 INTs. When Henderson was hurt on the first play of the Texas Bowl against Oklahoma State, true freshman Marcel Reed completed 20-of-33 passes for 361 yards and added a 20-yard TD run.

“New offensive coordinator Collin Klein molded Will Howard and Avery Johnson before departing for College Station and Weigman could be the best Aggies quarterback since Johnny Manziel if he lives up to his potential.”

Johnny Football didn’t quite live up to the hype in the NFL, but will Weigman do so at the college level, led by new head coach Mike Elko? We’ll all find out together beginning on Aug. 31.

SEC Unfiltered breaks down what new Texas A&M OC Collin Klein will bring to the Aggie offense

Check out a quick breakdown of some of the concepts new Texas A&M OC Collin Klein will bring to Aggieland

Texas A&M had a few interesting hires once Mike Elko started to fill out his staff. I believe out of all the core coaches, Collin Klein has the most potential to have a breakout year from a coordinator perspective. The former Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year spent virtually his entire coaching career at his alma mater Kansas State as a quarterbacks coach with a brief stint at Northern Iowa.

In his first year as OC at Kansas State, he won the Big 12 and after losing top talent the following season still led the Wildcats offense to the No. 1 points per drive and yardage rate. He will now get to cut his teeth in the most competitive conference in college football and has a host of talent to utilize.

Blayne Gilmer at SEC Unfiltered breaks down a few concepts Coach Klein used while calling a highly productive offense over the past two seasons.

TexAgs’ Billy Liucci provides his thoughts on how Conner Weigman will perform in new Aggies OC Collin Klein’s offense

Billy Liucci gives a rundown on why he thinks Conner Weigman can make a big jump this next season.

Texas A&M’s 2024 football season will come with a lot of a lot of question marks. However, outside of the defensive line, the quarterback room is the other position group with immense talent. While the actual game experience might be lacking, signal callers Conner Weigman, Jaylon Henderson, and Marcel Reed all showed the ability to make plays in the hybrid Jimbo Fisher/Bobby Petrino play-calling system last season.

While the competition in the spring will be interesting to watch, Weigman still holds the QB1 sport, with the backup position being an under-the-radar battle to keep an eye on. Billy Liucci of TexAgs recently gave us his insight into why he believes Weigman will make a big jump this next season.

We can get our first look at Conner in Collin Klein’s offense and what we can expect from this team during the spring scrimmage on April 20th.

Report: Texas A&M set to host 2025 4-star WR Quanell X Farrakhan Jr. this upcoming weekend

According to Aggies Today, The Woodlands High School 4-star wideout Quanell X Farrakhan Jr. will be taking a trip to Aggieland this weekend.

As the first month of 2024 begins to come to an end, the Texas A&M football program is starting to focus on recruiting graduates from the high school Class of 2025.

One of the top prospects from that class is reportedly visiting College Station this upcoming weekend. According to Aggies Today, 4-star wide receiver Quanell X Farrakhan Jr. will be taking a trip to Aggieland at the end of this week.

Farrakhan is 6-foot, 170 pounds and attends The Woodlands High School in Texas. He currently has 23 offers and has yet to take an official visit according to 247Sports.

All of the heavy hitters in the SEC have already offered Farrakhan including the Aggies, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee. Other notable universities include Florida State, Houston, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, SMU, TCU, Texas State, UTSA, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.

If Farrakhan chooses Texas A&M, he will be primarily instructed by head coach Mike Elko, offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach Collin Klein and co-offensive coordinator and wideouts coach Holmon Wiggins.

Texas A&M Head Coach Mike Elko to boost staff with former Vanderbilt OC

More help is one the way as the Aggies look to bolster the offensive staff with former Broyles Award nominee Joey Lynch

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko continues to add new faces to the Aggie program and is bringing another coach with SEC experience into the fold. While it’s not 100% locked in yet it’s been reported by John Brice at Football Scoop that former Vanderbilt Offensive Coordinator Joey Lynch will be joining the staff as a senior analyst.

Coach Lynch comes to Aggieland after being let go after two down years for the Commodores, however, prior to that brief stint he had a 10-year career at Ball State where he moved from the wide receivers coach to OC/Assistant Head Coach position. Where Lynch excelled throughout his career has been the ability to develop players no matter the position.

In his one season as OC with Ashland University his work with quarterback Billy Condiff earned him All-American Honors, conference player of the year, and a Harlon Hill Trophy nomination. While at Ball State the coached tight end Zane Fakes to back-to-back All-MAC first team honors, and once as OC he had six players make the All-MAC team as results of producing the top scoring offense in the league. The rounded out that season with a Broyles Award nomination that’s handed out to the nation’s top assistant.

Coach Lynch will serve as a great resource to current Aggie OC Collin Klein as the Aggies look to make major strides on the offensive side of the ball this season.

Texas A&M junior quarterback Conner Weigman discusses being cleared and much more

“The doctor called a couple of days ago. He looked at my CT scans and said the bones were all healed. It was good to get cleared from him.”

Texas A&M junior quarterback Conner Weigman was recently cleared to play after suffering a season-ending foot injury in Week 4 of the 2023 season.

Weigman chatted with Billy Liucci of TexAgs this week about a variety of topics, including his rehabilitation and the new era under head coach Mike Elko and his staff.

“Rehab has been good so far,” Weigman told TexAgs. “The doctor called a couple of days ago. He looked at my CT scans and said the bones were all healed. It was good to get cleared from him. We just need to start working with the training staff now and it’s about getting back to feeling like myself again.

“It’s exciting to be back with the team and do the same workouts with the guys. Being on the side by myself was pretty tough because I couldn’t be with my teammates and in the fire with them. I’m excited about being back with them and getting the ball rolling again.”

The Aggies were recently rated No. 1 in 247Sports’ “2024 Transfer Football Team Rankings” which impressed Weigman.

“The new regime is not playing around. I love it. There’s discipline in the little details. The little things matter because they all add up. It’s cool to see how it’s all coming together quickly,” Weigman said. “The portal transfers came out to be something like 28 guys. It has been cool. I try to eat breakfast every day with a new guy to try and build that bond and build that brotherhood. I remember how I felt when I first got here, so I just try to reach out to them.

“I’ve already been talking to the new defensive backs because I want to see what they’ve got. The competition at practice is going to be something and I’m looking forward to it.”

Weigman seems to be gelling with his new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach as well.

“Working with Collin Klein has been cool because he played the position at a high level. Just a few years ago, he was in the Heisman race with Johnny Manziel,” Weigman recalled. “Klein is a younger guy, so he’s in tune with all the new-age stuff. He’s fun to sit and talk to about football. I remember watching him play in 2012.”
