Connor McDavid is one of the greatest athletes of our time and you should watch him

Seriously. Jump on the Oilers bandwagon for the playoffs.

When I was 10 years old, a cartoon called “Pro Stars” appeared one Saturday morning. In it, Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson and Wayne Gretzky traveled around doing hero things, being pals. It felt like a pivotal moment for hockey: the game’s biggest star, having been traded from Edmonton to Los Angeles a few years prior, had become “cool.”

Well, all these many years later, there’s another hockey player doing things that should vault him into the conversation around who our very best athletes are. But he hasn’t left Edmonton yet, the world has changed in so many ways and this much is true: We’re not making a big enough deal about how good Connor McDavid is at playing hockey.

Last night he recorded his 100th point in just his 53rd game when he earned an assist on this game-winning goal:

Let’s try to put this into some perspective:

Ok. Well. Perhaps this mostly puts into perspective how special Gretzky was and there’s no arguing that. McDavid, though, had a more difficult task: The game isn’t nearly as open as it was when Gretzky was in his prime, though it may be easier on offensive players, due to how penalties are called, than it was in 1996. Still, today’s goaltenders are much better (and larger) now than they were in the 1980s and even 90s.

Mostly McDavid’s task was more difficult for all the reasons most sports have become more difficult: athletes are much better conditioned and trained, starting at a younger age, which closes the gap between the stars and the rest of the league.

Yet McDavid always stands out. Gretzky’s brilliance sometimes seemed like a magic trick. Never the biggest or fastest, he simply appeared in the right spots and made the right play.

There’s no such subtlety to McDavid’s game. The way he skates makes pretty much every other NHL player look like they’re kids on a pond, still mastering their craft.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbrSxIEdKIg

It’s just silly.

Ok, a caveat: Due to Covid adjustments, McDavid has been playing against only the other Canadian teams, and some might say those teams are playing defense as if they relocated to the QMJHL (this is a very specific hockey joke, it’s like saying an NFL team played defense as ruggedly as a Big 12 team).

You could also point out that McDavid plays on the same team as the league’s No. 2 scorer, Leon Draisaitl (who has 79 points) and therefore may benefit from easier matchups at times.

And you’ll find people willing to argue that McDavid isn’t even the league’s MVP this season, because other star players did more for their team:

Yeah, no. Recognizing a special season from McDavid — clearly the most dominant individual talent in the sport right now — would not be anti-Penguins bias. It’d just be noticing a really superb player! (Also, Rod Brind’Amour should win the Adams award for coach of the year, but I digress.)

Either way, we’re lucky enough to be watching a transcendent talent in his prime. So use this chance! The Oilers will be on television during the playoffs. Find a game. Watch in awe.

McDavid may not have the sweet, blonde flow that made Gretzky a great TV character ….

But he’s entering that upper echelon of must-see athletes:

The NHL should be ashamed for making the Oilers play after teammate’s memorial service

This was inexcusable.

The Edmonton Oilers didn’t look much like a team interested in playing hockey Saturday night, despite playing a fierce rival a few days before the trade deadline.

They lost the latest installment of the Battle of Alberta 5-0 to a Calgary Flames team that hadn’t played since Monday; Edmonton was skating for the third time in four nights. The difference in energy was apparent from the beginning.

But this isn’t just a case of one rested team jumping on a tired one. The Oilers had gathered earlier in the day at their Calgary hotel to watch a memorial service for Colby Cave, who died unexpectedly at age 25 from a brain bleed a year ago.

This also was not a case of unfortunate scheduling; Edmonton was originally supposed to have Saturday off, but this game was recently rescheduled from May 7 so that Hockey Night in Canada would have a second game to show (the Vancouver Canucks are dealing with several Covid cases and have been unable to play lately.)

Connor McDavid, the generally soft-spoken super star, rightfully called the league out:

Those are searing critiques for a guy as mild-mannered as McDavid. And while he and other teammates also tried to give their standard hockey guy answers about playing through adversity and finding a way no matter what, it all came out hollow. This team should not have been playing Saturday night.

Here’s how Sportsnet’s Mark Spector described the Ceremony of Life that Edmonton players watched prior to their game:

It was an emotionally draining memorial for a 25-year-old brother whose beautiful young widow Emily wept throughout her tragic eulogy, trembling as she said her heart-wrenching goodbye. Cave’s mother wept while talking about his first NHL game as a Boston Bruin, while his father, a burly Saskatchewan rancher named Al, could scarcely be understood, so choked was he to have lost his only son.

Then they dropped a puck at the Saddledome and said: “Go play.”

Man, I bet those Hockey Night in Canada viewers watching an emotionally devastated team get whooped really appreciated the NHL having their best interest in mind! Just needed that game there!

What makes this move by the NHL all the more offensive is that it continues to manipulate the schedule to leave room for the Canucks to finish their season. The same Canucks who’ve had their last 7 games postponed because 25 members of the organization have contracted Covid-19 — many with symptoms — in the worst outbreak of the season.

And yes the Canucks (35 points in 37 games) could conceivably catch the Canadiens (43 points in 38 games) for the fourth playoff spot but …. no. Vancouver has a -20 goal differential and is going to be asked to play 19 games in 31 days.

It’s absolutely reckless. Just as making the Oilers play on Saturday was heartless.

TV contracts pay the bills, sure, but the fact the NHL couldn’t get more creative about how to fill a time slot — and that the league is pretending it’s absolutely essential for one team to play every last game despite a dramatic outbreak — shows the players how the league actually feels about them.

Former Notre Dame Players in NHL to Begin 2020-21 Season

The NHL finally drops the puck on its 2020-21 season Wednesday. With COVID-19 still running rampant, this will be a season unlike any other. Teams will play 56 games in divisions that drastically have been realigned for the season, and teams will not play outside their respective divisions. But no matter which team you root for, there will be plenty of players who suited up for Notre Dame before they ascended to hockey’s highest level.

NHL Picks and Best Bets: 2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions

Looking at the NHL betting odds to win the 2019-20 Stanley Cup Final, with NHL futures picks and best bets.

The 2019-20 Stanley Cup will be up for grabs later this summer as the NHL season resumes with a 24-team playoff structure. The expanded postseason has opened up the odds, providing greater profit margins for sports bettors. Below, we’ll look at the Stanley Cup futures odds, and make our picks and best bets at BetMGM.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Favorite

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list.
Odds last updated Thursday, May 28 at 2:40 p.m. ET.

St. Louis Blues (+1000)

The defending Stanley Cup champions finished the abbreviated regular season atop the ultra-competitive Central Division at 42-19-10 for 94 points through 71 games. They scored 225 goals and allowed just 193, all without star RW Vladimir Tarasenko (shoulder) for the majority of the season.

Tarasenko will return following the break and unlike most teams who try to defend a Stanley Cup title, the Blues are plenty rested after going the distance in 2018-19. The pressure has also faded, at least slightly, due to the prolonged break.

The Blues are only sixth by the odds to win the Cup despite finishing first in the Western Conference and receiving a Qualification Round bye. They’re a strong pick as the first team with odds of 10/1 or higher.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Blues to win the Stanley Cup returns a profit of $100.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Contender

Edmonton Oilers (+2300)

The extended mid-season interruption will help level the competitive playing field for all 24 teams in the expanded playoffs. For this reason, it’s smart to trust the Oilers, who are led by C Connor McDavid and C Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl and McDavid finished 1-2 in both points and assists in the regular season, and they’ll be able to take advantage of any team showing signs of rust defensively.

Believe in the raw talent of the Oilers’ two stars as they’ll look to outscore the competition in what’s sure to be a more wide-open playoff-style than to which we’re accustomed.

2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions Odds: Long shot

Florida Panthers (+6500)

Alternatively, look at the Panthers as your Stanley Cup dart throw. They ranked sixth in the Eastern Conference with 231 goals in the regular season while going 35-26-8. G Sergei Bobrovsky, a marquee free-agent addition, struggled through 50 games to post a .900 save percentage and a 3.23 goals against average.

The two-time Vezina Trophy winner is the biggest X-factor in this new playoff structure. The break has given him plenty of time to regroup and move past his regular-season struggles. If he can return to form, the Panthers could be vaulted into a long postseason run.

NHL Picks and Best Bets: 2019-20 Western Conference Champions

Looking at the NHL futures betting odds to win the Western Conference, with picks and best bets for the 2019-20 NHL playoffs.

The NHL betting odds to win the Western Conference have been shaken up following the league’s announcement of a 24-team playoff format set to begin later this summer. Below, we make our picks and best bets to win the Western Conference and advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

2019-20 NHL Western Conference Odds: Favorites

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list.
Odds last updated Thursday, May 28 at 2:20 p.m. ET.

TEAM ODDS
Colorado Avalanche +325
Vegas Golden Knights +350
St. Louis Blues +450
Dallas Stars +650

Colorado Avalanche (+325)

The Avalanche sat first or second in the Central Division for much of the 2019-20 campaign and finished the abbreviated regular season with 92 points in 70 games (42-20-8). Their plus-46 goal differential was the best in the Western Conference and their 237 goals scored were nine more than any other team in the conference.

The Avs were one of the most-heavily injury-ridden teams in the league at the time of the pause. C Nathan MacKinnon (lower body), RW Mikko Rantanen (upper body), C Nazem Kadri (lower body) and G Philipp Grubauer (lower body) were just a few who may have been in jeopardy for the beginning of a mid-April postseason. All are now expected to be back to full health.

The favorites in the West are well worth backing. A $10 bet will return a profit of $32.50 is they advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

Vegas Golden Knights (+350)

Like the Avalanche, the Golden Knights are heavy favorites to make it out of the West. Las Vegas is a finalist to be named as a hub city for the postseason, potentially giving the Knights a key home-ice advantage.

Vegas went 39-24-8 through 71 games to finish atop the Pacific Division. RW Mark Stone (lower body), LW Max Pacioretty (lower body) and C Chandler Stephenson (upper body) should all be back in the lineup, giving the Golden Knights one of the deepest forward groups in the league.

2019-20 NHL Western Conference Odds: Long shots

TEAM ODDS
Edmonton Oilers +1000
Calgary Flames +1400
Nashville Predators +1400
Vancouver Canucks +1700
Minnesota Wild +1800
Arizona Coyotes +2000
Winnipeg Jets +2400
Chicago Blackhawks +5000

Edmonton Oilers (+1000)

I chased value in my Eastern Conference picks, targeting strong goaltending and long shots with inflated odds. In the West, it’s all about the favorites with the odds being much more condensed.

C Leon Draisaitl and C Connor McDavid finished 1-2 in both points and assists in the regular season. They’ll draw the 12th-seeded Blackhawks in the Qualification Round and are heavily favored to advance to Round 1 of the 16-team playoffs.

NHL world reacts after tragic death of 25-year-old Oilers player Colby Cave

Colby Cave was just 25 years old. The NHL world was stunned to hear news of his passing.

The hockey world was stunned on Saturday with the passing of Edmonton Oilers player Colby Cave. According to a report from USA TODAY Sports, Cave was placed in a medically induced coma on Tuesday following a brain bleed, and emergency surgery to relieve pressure that a cyst was placing on his brain.

Cave, an Oilers player who previously played for the Boston Bruins, was just 25 years old. He leaves behind his wife, Emily, and his parents. In a note through the team website, Emily wrote:

“It is with great sadness to share the news that our Colby Cave passed away early this morning. I (Emily) and both our families are in shock but know our Colby was loved dearly by us, his family and friends, the entire hockey community, and many more. We thank everyone for their prayers during this difficult time.”

NHL players took to social media to post tributes to Cave.

Vegas Golden Knights at Edmonton Oilers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Vegas Golden Knights at Edmonton Oilers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

First place in the Pacific Division is on the line Monday with the Vegas Golden Knights (38-24-8) visiting the Edmonton Oilers (37-24-8) at Rogers Place for a 9 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Golden Knights-Oilers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Golden Knights at Oilers: Projected starting goalies

Marc-Andre Fleury vs. Mike Smith

Fleury comes into Monday having dropped back-to-back decisions. He allowed four goals on just 24 shots in a road loss against the Winnipeg Jets Friday. He’s still 26-16-5 on the season with a .905 save percentage and 2.79 goals against average.

Smith allowed four goals on 21 shots in a loss to the Chicago Blackhawks Thursday. It was his first regulation loss in seven games dating back to Feb. 13. He owns a 19-11-6 record with a .903 SV% and 2.94 GAA.

Golden Knights at Oilers: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list.
Odds last updated at 10:15 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Oilers 3, Golden Knights 1

Moneyline (ML)

Both teams are coming off wins, as the OILERS (-121) beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 Saturday and the Golden Knights (+100) topped the Calgary Flames 5-3 Sunday. The Oilers have both the rest and home advantage Monday. They’re 17-10-5 at home and the Golden Knights are just 16-13-4 on the road.

The season series is split 1-1 between the two division rivals. Edmonton earned a 4-2 victory in Vegas Nov. 23, and the Golden Knights responded with a 3-0 home win Feb. 26. This will be the first meeting of the season in Edmonton, and the Oilers get the nod.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Oilers to win outright returns a profit of $8.26.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Despite the familiarity between the two division rivals, both games thus far have been decided by multi-goal margins. The OILERS (-1.5, +220) are worth another small wager to win by at least 2 goals Monday. While the moneyline is a much safer play, these odds are too high to ignore with the same $10 bet returning a profit of $22.

Neither team has been great against the spread this season by Monday’s location split. The Golden Knights are 15-18 ATS on the road. The Oilers are 12-20 ATS at home. Edmonton opened its key four-game homestand with a 4-1 win over the Blue Jackets and will be backed by a playoff-hungry home crowd once again.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 5.5 (+125) in what amounts to a playoff game with top spot in the division on the line. Both goalies were roughed up their last time out, but both are highly experienced and play well in big games. Both teams are 4-5-1 against the Over/Under across their last 10 games.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Edmonton Oilers odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Columbus Blue Jackets at Edmonton Oilers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Columbus Blue Jackets (32-21-15) and Edmonton Oilers (36-24-8) battle at Rogers Place at 10 p.m. ET Saturday. We analyze the Blue Jackets-Oilers sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Blue Jackets at Oilers: Projected starting goalies

Joonas Korpisalo vs. Mikko Koskinen

Korpisalo heads to Northern Alberta searching for his 20th win of the season. He carries a 19-11-5 record, 2.58 goals against average and .912 save percentage with two shutouts into play. He is just 6-2-4 in his 11 starts and 12 appearances on the road this season. He was tuned up earlier this season by the Oilers, allowing four goals on just 12 shots before being pulled after 24:56 in a loss Oct. 30 in Columbus.

Koskinen is 17-13-2 on the season with a .914 SV% and 2.80 GAA. He stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief of starter Mike Smith Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Blue Jackets at Oilers: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 2:50 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Oilers 5, Blue Jackets 3

Moneyline (ML)

The OILERS (-175) aren’t terribly expensive despite the fact they’re 5-2 in their past seven games against the Eastern Conference, and 14-3 in their past 17 games against Metropolitan Division opponents. On the flip side, the Blue Jackets (+145) are just 2-11 in their past 13 games overall, 1-6 in their past seven against winning teams and 0-6 in their past six on the road.

A $10 bet on the Oilers to win returns a profit of $5.70, while a $10 wager on the Blue Jackets results in a profit of $14.50.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The OILERS (-1.5, +155) are a tremendous value at home. They won the first meeting 4-1, and 12 of their past 16 victories have resulted in a cover of the puck line. Take advantage.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 5.5 (-125) has cashed in 10 of the past 13 meetings in Edmonton. That’s over the span of 13 years, so not as important as the here and now. The Over is 7-2 in the past nine overall for the Jackets, and 6-1 in their past seven on the road. The Over is 6-2 in Edmonton’s past eight as a home favorite, too, and 5-1-1 in its past seven against losing sides.

Edmonton Oilers at Dallas Stars odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Edmonton Oilers at Dallas Stars sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Edmonton Oilers (35-23-8) and Dallas Stars (37-21-7) will lock horns at American Airlines Center in Dallas at 8:30 p.m. ET Tuesday. We analyze the Oilers-Stars sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Oilers at Stars: Projected starting goalies

Mikko Koskinen vs. Ben Bishop

Koskinen is 16-13-2 with a 2.89 goals against average (GAA) and .911 save percentage. He ‘should’ get the start in Dallas after Mike Smith made 27 saves in an 8-3 win at Nashville Monday. It’s rare goalies are tasked with starts in back-to-back days, although it might be tempting considering Smith is 7-1-3 with a 2.68 GAA and .913 SV% in 11 starts since the All-Star break.

Bishop, 21-14-4 with a 2.49 GAA and .921 SV% this season, will be happy to be back at home. He has rather stark splits, going 8-5-2 with a 2.95 GAA and .907 SV% on the road, and 13-9-2 with a sparkling 2.19 GAA and .930 SV% at home.

Oilers at Stars: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated at 12:15 p.m. ET.

Prediction

Oilers 3, Stars 2

Moneyline (ML)

The OILERS (+145) are the value play on the road. Dallas (-176) is strong on home ice, but Edmonton’s offense is clicking. The Oilers lit the lamp eight times in Nashville Monday, and they rank No. 1 on the power play at 29.3 percent and rank second on the penalty kill at 84.2 percent. Special teams have been the key to their success and that should continue Tuesday. Keep in mind you’ll be betting against some series trends, as Edmonton is 10-32-1 in the past 43 trips to Dallas, and 26-59-1 in the past 86 in this series.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Oilers ML returns a profit of $14.50 if they win, while a $10 wager on the Stars ML only profits $5.68 if they prevail.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

If you’re not feeling the Oilers (+1.5, -189) straight up and want a little insurance, you can eat the chalk and feel safe. It’s better to just go with the moneyline. AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 5.5 (-115) is the play. The Under is 7-3-1 in the past 11 vs. Western Conference teams for the Stars, while going 5-2 in the Oilers’ past seven against winning teams. The Under is also 4-1 in Edmonton’s past five as a road dog, and 4-1 in the past five meetings with Dallas.

Edmonton Oilers at Nashville Predators odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Monday’s Edmonton Oilers at Nashville Predators sports betting odds and lines, with NHL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Nashville Predators (32-24-8) host the Edmonton Oilers (34-23-8) Monday at Bridgestone Arena for an 8 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Oilers-Predators sports betting odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips and picks around this matchup.

Oilers at Predators: Projected starting goalies

Mike Smith vs. Juuse Saros

Smith has gone 11-1-3 with a .920 save percentage over 15 games played since Jan. 4. The veteran netminder is 18-10-6 with a .905 SV% and 2.87 goals against average across 34 starts and two relief appearances for his first season with the Oilers.

Saros has taken over the lion’s share of starts for the Predators. He is 14-11-4 with a .907 SV% and 2.89 GAA through 30 starts and five relief appearances on the season.

Oilers at Predators: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list.
Odds last updated at 10:20 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Oilers 3, Predators 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Oilers (+120) enter Monday second in the Pacific Division, while the Predators (-143) are fourth in the Central Division and fighting for a wild-card spot for their Western Conference playoff berth. Nashville is coming off a 3-2 home loss to the Colorado Avalanche, and they’ll play their final game of a five-game homestand. Edmonton topped the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 Saturday and starts another three-game road swing.

Back the OILERS (+120) at plus-money as a strong value play. Edmonton has a slight advantage in Corsi For Percentage (rate of total shot attempts), at 49.96% to 48.31% at 5-on-5 since Feb. 1. The Oilers also lead the head-to-head season series 2-0 with wins by scores of 4-2 and 3-2, both in Edmonton.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Oilers to win in regulation, overtime or a shootout returns a profit of $12.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

PASS on the spread, as the moneyline is a much more profitable play while backing the Oilers (+1.5, -228). The goal of insurance in the event of a loss for the road dogs results in a profit of just $4.40 on the same $10 wager.

Edmonton is 34-31 against the spread overall and a strong 23-11 against the spread on the road. The Preds are just 22-42 ATS overall and a woeful 9-24 on home ice. None of Nashville’s last five wins were by more than a single goal, and two of those went to overtime or a shootout. We’re backing the Oilers to win a close game.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the UNDER 5.5 (+120) as a good value bet. Both teams played to the Over in just four of their last 10 games and their two head-to-head meetings this season played to either side of Monday’s projected goal total.
