Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne vying for Hall of Fame induction

Two Colts legends hope to get a gold jacket.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020 has been dwindled down to 15 finalists and among those vying for one of the five modern-era spots are Indianapolis Colts legends Edgerrin James and Reggie Wayne.

James has been on the Hall of Fame ballot six times and has made it to the finalists round four times, including this year. It seems this is finally the year James has a shot to get in after missing out on the honor for the better part of half a decade.

James is 13th on the NFL’s all-time rushing yards list. Every retired player ahead of him has been inducted into the Hall of Fame and over 20 players behind him on that list have also made it in.

While James has been on the ballot for many years it seems, Wayne finds himself in the finalist round during the first year of his Hall of Fame candidacy.

It is rare for a player to be inducted on his first ballot, let alone a wide receiver. But it bodes well for Wayne’s future that he’s already made it to the finalists round.

Wayne is the franchise leader in career games played for the Colts. He’s second to Marvin Harrison in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in franchise history.

Wayne is also 10th in NFL history in career receptions and receiving yards.

The five inductees for the Hall of Fame will be revealed during the NFL Honors show at 8:00 p.m. ET on FOX.

Is this the year Edgerrin James finally gets into the Hall of Fame?

Will Edge get in?

One of the greatest statistical running backs in NFL history is still on the outside looking in for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but could this finally be the year former Indianapolis Colts running back Edgerrin James gets in?

James has been on the ballot for six years now and has been named a finalist four times. That’s a great honor, but he’s come up short every time. This might finally be the year that James deserves to be a part of a class in Canton.

James is the only running back that made it to the round of finalists, which is made up of 15 modern-era players. Five of those players will be inducted into the 2020 class when the Hall of Fame voters meet to decide who gets in this weekend.

The No. 4 overall pick from the 1999 NFL draft has a strong case for a gold jacket. He’s 13th on the NFL’s all-time rushing list—every retired player ahead of him is in the Hall of Fame while a number of players behind him on the list have also made it.

His 80 rushing touchdowns are 20th among all running backs. He had seven seasons with 1,100 rushing yards, five of which were with the Colts. He had more than 1,500 rushing yards in a season four times.

He was a first-team All-Pro one time in his career and was voted to the NFL’s All-Decade team for the 2000s.

There are a lot of worthy names to be inducted into the Hall of Fame Class of 2020, and James is certainly one of them.

Poll: Will Edgerrin James make the Hall of Fame in 2020?

Is this the year former Seattle Seahawks running back Edgerrin James gets inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame?

There are two former Seattle Seahawks among the 15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame: guard Steve Hutchinson and running back Edgerrin James.

Both James and Hutchinson hope to be among the five candidates chosen for the Hall of Fame class of 2020, but a very competitive group of first time candidates and a solid group of returners will make it challenging to break through this year.

Led by Troy Polamalu, this year’s Hall of Fame finalists also include receivers Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Reggie Wayne, safeties Leroy Butler, John Lynch and Steve Atwater, linebacker Zach Thomas and tackle Tony Boselli, among others.

James is one of many Hall of Famers to finish out their careers in the Emerald City. He played in seven games with Seattle in 2009, rushing 46 times for 125 yards before calling it a career at age 31.

James was a four-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro in 1999, his rookie season, when he lead the league in carries, rushing yards and total touchdowns.

He finished his career with 12,246 rushing yards, 13th all-time, along with 80 career rushing touchdowns.

James’ numbers are comparable to numerous other Hall of Fame running backs, making him appear on paper as a worthy candidate, but he has yet to see much support for enshrinement.

With a crowded ballot this year and only five spots available – four if you assume Polamalu will get one – will James sneak his way into Canton this year, or will he have to keep waiting?

Brett Favre thinks Steve Hutchinson belongs in the Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre endorsed former Seattle Seahawks guard Steve Hutchinson for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

On February 1, 2020, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will choose five modern-era players from the 15-man ballot to elect into the class of 2020.

Of those 15 remaining players, two of them – running back Edgerrin James and guard Steve Hutchinson – played with the Seattle Seahawks.

Hutchinson has been a finalist a handful of times, and most believe this is the year he will finally get his bust in Canton.

Among those believers is Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre, who played with Hutchinson for two years in Minnesota from 2009-2010.

Favre jumped on Twitter to voice his support for Hutch, calling him the best guard he’s ever played with and stating that he never gave up a sack or a pressure during their time as teammates.

Hutchinson was a seven time Pro Bowler and a five time All-Pro in a career that spanned from 2001-2012. He spent the first five seasons of his career in a Seahawks uniform, helping to form one of the best left sides of an offensive line in NFL history alongside Hall of Famer Walter Jones.

With a strong group of finalists, including James, Troy Polamalu, Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and Leroy Butler, it will be hard to limit the group to just five. However, Hutchinson’s career accolades are enough for him to reach the Hall, and 2020 might be his year.

2 former Cardinals are modern-day Hall of Fame finalists

The 2020 Hall of Fame class will be announced the night before the Super Bowl.

The Arizona Cardinals might have a former player or two end up as Hall of Famers. The 2020 Hall of Fame class has been cut down to 15 finalists.

Among the finalists, there are two former Cardinals players.

They spent the last parts of their careers in Arizona.

One is running back Edgerrin James. He had his best years with the Indianapolis Colts, playing there seven seasons and led the league twice in rushing.

He played three seasons for the Cardinals from 2006-2008. He had over 1,150 yards and over 1,200 yards his first two years before he played a part-time role in 2008 when the Cardinals made it to the Super Bowl.

The other is offensive lineman Alan Faneca. He was one of the best guards of his generation, playing primarily for the Steelers and Jets. He played one season for the Cardinals, his final season in 2010.

The 2020 class will be announced at the NFL Honors show the night before the Super Bowl.

Ranking the 2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists

Touchdown Wire ranks the 15 modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced 15 finalists for the Class of 2020 on Thursday night. All of them are worthy, but only five will make it this year.

I’ve been in the room as an alternate voter three times and it’s a fascinating process. The voters take their responsibility very seriously, as they should. They want it to be the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good.

As a veteran writer explained to me the first time I was in the room, anyone that made the finalist list deserved to get in – at some point. But only the best are to get in during a given year. The rest should wait until the right time and their time will come.

That veteran also told me to keep one question in mind when voting – could the history of the game be written without a player. It was all great advice and I always tried to keep those parameters in mind.

I’m not voting this year, but I’ll still keep that advice in mind as I rank this year’s finalists from No. 15 to No. 1. Here we go.

15. Richard Seymour, DL – 2001-08 New England Patriots, 2009-2012 Oakland Raiders

Seymour split his career between defensive end and tackle. That works against him. His 57.5 career sacks aren’t nearly enough for the Hall of Fame.

2 former Seahawks among 15 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists

Former Seahawks OL Steve Hutchinson and RB Edgerrin James are among the two modern-era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the 15 finalists for the modern-era ballot and two former Seattle Seahawks, running back Edgerrin James and guard Steve Hutchinson, remain eligible for enshrinement.

The list originally featured 122 names, including six other Seahawks: quarterback Dave Krieg; running backs Shaun Alexander, Ricky Watters and Chris Warren; center Ray Donovan; and punter Jeff Feagles.

Watters was among the 25 semifinalists, but was cut when the list was whittled down to 15, leaving just Hutchinson and James among former Seahawks.

Hutchinson seems like the likeliest of the pair to gain Hall of Fame status this winter, having finished as a finalist in each of the past two years. The guard was a seven-time Pro Bowler and five-time All-Pro in his 12-year career.

James only appeared in seven games for the Seahawks in the 2009 season, rushing 46 times for just 125 yards. He is 13th all-time in rushing yards, however, and has a decent chance of hearing his name called this year.

The final ballot will include five inductees, and will be announced the Saturday before the Super Bowl.

As part of the Hall’s special 20-member class of 2020, they will be joined by 10 ‘senior’ players (who have been retired for more than 25 seasons), three ‘contributors’ (neither a player nor coach) and two coaches.

Two former Seattle coaches, Mike Holmgren and Tom Flores, are among the coaches who could be enshrined as well, giving the Seahawks four potential inductees this year.

Colts’ Reggie Wayne, Edgerrin James among 2020 Hall of Fame finalist

Edge and Reggie have a shot at Canton.

The Indianapolis Colts have two of their former greats earn a spot among the 15 finalists for the 2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame in the form of running back Edgerrin James and wide receiver Reggie Wayne.

This is the first time Wayne has been on the ballot and has already made it to the finalists round thanks to a prolific career with the Colts that saw him lead the franchise in games played (211).

Wayne is also on the ballot thanks to an immensely productive career—he’s second in the franchise for receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns behind Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison.

James was first on the ballot six years ago and has made it to this final-15 round on four separate occasions now. He’s franchise leader for rushing attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns while also being one of the greatest statistical running backs the NFL has ever seen.

The other 13 candidates for the Hall of Fame include:

  • Troy Polamalu
  • John Lynch
  • Steve Atwater
  • LeRoy Butler
  • Isaac Bruce
  • Torry Holt
  • Sam Mills
  • Tony Boselli
  • Bryant Young
  • Alan Faneca
  • Steve Hutchison
  • Richard Seymour

The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee will meet on the day before the Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 1 in Miami.

2 former Seahawks coaches finalists for Pro Football Hall of Fame

Former Seattle Seahawks head coaches Tom Flores and Mike Holmgren are among the eight coaching finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced the Class of 2020 Centennial Slate Finalists on Thursday, and two former Seattle Seahawks coaches made the cut.

Mike Holmgren and Tom Flores were among the eight coaches named finalists. Only two of those eight will be elected into the Hall of Fame however, and the Blue Ribbon Panel will determine the inductees sometime in January.

Holmgren was an NFL head coach for 17 seasons, seven with the Packers and the final 10 with the Seahawks from 1999 to 2008.

He posted a 161-111 record and coached in 24 playoff games, going 13-11 and appearing in three Super Bowls, winning one with the Packers in 1996 and leading Seattle to their first ever appearance in 2006.

Flores coached in the NFL for 12 seasons, his final three in Seattle. He didn’t have a lot of success in the Emerald City, going just 14-34 from 1992-1994, but he won two Super Bowls while coaching the Raiders in the 1980’s.

14-year head coach Don Coryell is on the ballot as well. While he never worked with the Seahawks, he is a native of Seattle and attended school at the University of Washington.

Flores and Holmgren join three former Seahawks’ players as Hall of Fame eligible this year – Edgerrin James, Steve Hutchinson and Ricky Watters – who are all on the modern era committee list.
