5 best and 5 worst ever Jaguars first-round draft picks

Who stands out as the best first-round selections ever made by the Jaguars, and which players were the worst?

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a far from stellar track record when it comes to the NFL draft. It hasn’t all been bad, though.

Nearly three decades into the franchise’s existence, there are a handful of players who stand out as spectacular first-round choices by the Jaguars. Of course, there are plenty who stand out as especially poor selections.

It’s a little premature to judge the picks made by general manager Trent Baalke, although the early returns on Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne sure look great. But for the sake of the exercise, we’ll exclude players picked in the last three years.

Here are the five best first-round picks ever made by the Jaguars and the five worst:

Jacksonville Jaguars release documentary on Hall of Famer and USC legend Tony Boselli

The @Jaguars released a documentary on #USC legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli. You can watch it right now.

Following the announcement of Tony Boselli’s Hall of Fame induction in February of 2022, and inspired by heartfelt recollections from his family and friends, the Jacksonville Jaguars set out on a mission to tell the story of what made Boselli, the Jaguars’ first draft pick, the Hall of Famer he is today.

After 15 hours of footage and 20 interviews, the result is a 38-minute film documenting not just Boselli’s football career but the monumental impact he has had on the people around him throughout his life.

Boselli is regarded as one of the finest offensive tackles to play at USC and in the NFL. A four-year (1991-94) starter at USC, he was a two-time (1992-94) All-America first teamer and three-time (1991-92-94) All-Pac-10 first teamer.

The No. 2 selection of the 1995 NFL draft was noted for his superb footspeed and agility. He was the first-ever pick in the history of the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise. He played seven seasons (1995-2001) with the Jaguars, where he was a four-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler.

Tony Boselli to receive Hall of Fame ring during halftime Sunday

Fans at the Jaguars’ Week 5 game against the Texans will get to celebrate the team’s first ever Hall of Famer.

Jacksonville Jaguars legend Tony Boselli will receive his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring during a halftime ceremony Sunday when the Jaguars play the Houston Texans.

On Tuesday, the Jaguars announced several events to celebrate the ring ceremony for the team’s first ever Hall of Famer.

In addition to the Sunday celebration, Boselli will be hosted by Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry at City Hall on Thursday. On Saturday, a documentary called “71” about the life and career of Boselli will premiere at the Ritz Theatre & Museum.

Boselli, 50, was officially inducted in the Hall of Fame in August. During the halftime ceremony Sunday, Boselli will be presented with the ring by Pro Football Hall of Fame president Jim Porter with Jaguars owner Shad Khan also in attendance.

The Jaguars made Boselli their first ever draft pick in 1995 and he’s credited with allowing only 15.5 sacks in seven seasons with the team. Boselli earned five trips to the Pro Bowl before he was selected by the Texans in the 2002 expansion draft. He never played for Houston due to a botched shoulder surgery.

Jaguars vs. Steelers golf event set for October

The Jaguars and Steelers won’t meet on the football field this season, but they will go head-to-head on the golf course.

Jacksonville Jaguars legend Tony Boselli and a yet-to-be-named former Jaguars player will team up on the golf course on Oct. 7 against a pair of former Pittsburgh Steelers led by Ben Roethlisberger, according to the Florida Times-Union.

The Jaguars vs. Steelers showdown on the links is set to happen at the Constellation Furyk & Friends PGA Tour Champions event, which will be held at the Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville.

Boselli, who became a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, and his Jaguars teammate will be playing for the charity Blessings in a Backpack. Roethlisberger and his yet-to-be-named Steelers teammate will be playing for Beaches Habitat for Humanity.

The pairs will be a nine-hole scramble and will include additional competitions to decide which team earns the most of the $100,000 in charity money up for grabs.

Roethlisberger retired earlier this year after 18 seasons as the Steelers’ quarterback. He threw 12 interceptions in nine career games against the Jaguars. Only his AFC North rivals — the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns — recorded more picks against Roethlisberger.

On Saturday, former Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle only Boselli was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. With him now officially enshrined, he’s the first Jags player to be inducted in the team’s 28 years of existence.

Boselli has been a busy man this week as there were several events surrounding his induction with the full 2022 class of enshrined players. It all started on Thursday when the Jags played in the Hall of Fame Game and ended on Saturday when he took the podium for his speech.

All of that said, here are the top photos from Boselli’s time in Canton this week:

Former Jags LT Tony Boselli officially inducted into Pro Football Hall of Fame

Jaguars fans, he’s officially in there!

The 2022 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony has officially concluded, which means the NFL now has added its newest members to football’s most exclusive club. That includes former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Tony Boselli, who is now the organization’s first player to be enshrined at Canton.

Former Jaguars quarterback was given the honor of being the presenter for Boselli and helped him reveal his bust that went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.

On Friday, Boselli received his gold jacket at the Gold Jacket Dinner which several of his family members attended.

Boselli’s career only lasted from 1995 to 2001 due to a shoulder injury cutting it short, and as a result, it took him longer than many in the football community felt it should have to get him enshrined in Canton. However, Boselli remained patient about getting his opportunity and his time finally came this offseason. Back in February, fellow Hall-of-Famer and friend of Boselli, Anthony Muñoz, revealed the news to him as NFL Network caught the moment.

Boselli joins the Hall of Fame after becoming a three-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler with the Jags, marking a dominant run with the organization. Those accolades helped him become a member of the 1990s All-Decade Team and a member of the Jags’ Hall of Fame called the “Pride of the Jaguars.”

Several members from the Jags organization attended the ceremony, like Jags owner Shad Khan and co-owner Tony Khan, as well as current general manager Trent Baalke and coach Doug Pederson. His speech was just past 11 minutes as he thanked those who supported him throughout his journey.

Watch: Former Jags LT Tony Boselli receives his Hall of Fame jacket

Jaguars legend Tony Boselli had a special moment tonight folks.

It’s been a busy week for former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Tony Boselli, who is currently in Canton to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. On Saturday, his bust will officially be revealed during the Enshrinement Ceremony, but Friday was a big day for Boselli, too, as he received his gold jacket.

Action News Jax reporter Ben Ryan was able to attend the Gold Jacket Dinner and posted footage of Boselli’s big moment as he took the stage and received his jacket. Former Jags quarterback Mark Brunell, who will be the presenter for Boselli in the Enshrinement Ceremony, was there to give him his jacket for what is a historic moment in Jags history.

When Boselli’s enshrined on Saturday, he will be the first Jaguar to go into the Hall of Fame. His well-deserved moment comes after he was the first-ever Jags draft selection in 1995 and was with the team until 2001.

Throughout Boselli’s tenure with the Jags, he was a three-time first-team All-Pro and a five-time Pro Bowler. Those were honors that eventually made him a 1990s All-Decade Player and also a member of the Jags’ Hall of Fame entitled the “Pride of the Jags.”

Boselli endured a long wait to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as he was a semifinalist for seven consecutive years. However, throughout that wait, the Jacksonville football community was vocal about getting him in and will finally get to see him get the moment he’s long deserved on Saturday.

Tony Boselli appreciative of A+ support from Jags fanbase, organization

Tony Boselli says the Jags fanbase embraced him from the start and their support during his journey to the Pro Football Hall of Fame was “amazing.”

Not only will the spotlight be on the Jacksonville Jaguars this week as they compete in the Hall of Fame Game, but it will also be on their first-ever draft pick Tony Boselli. The Jags legend will finally receive his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Enshrinement Ceremony will take place on Saturday.

Boselli paid his dues through a long wait after being a semifinalist for seven consecutive years. However, what made the journey a little easier to endure was the support he received from the fanbase and the Jags organization.

When speaking with NFL Network recently, Boselli praised Jacksonville and the Jags for their support throughout his journey and said it was an overwhelming feeling.

“The city of Jacksonville has been amazing,” Boselli said. “So being the first pick overall [in Jags history], probably not the sexiest pick and I’m sure the fans were going ‘Hey, where is the wide receiver or the quarterback?’ But you would never know it because they embraced me from Day 1.

Outside of 2017, the last decade-plus has not been great for the organization with wins and losses and the fans have hung in there. They’ve been supportive. So when this happened, they’ve been wild and the organization has been crazy. Shad Khan, the owner, he wasn’t the owner when I played, but you wouldn’t know it with the way he’s handled the situation and what he’s done. […] I think with every player, you want what you did on the field to be appreciated. The Hall of Fame is a validation of that, but then how the organization you gave so much to, the way they treat you afterward says a lot and they get an A+. The fans and organization, it’s been amazing.”

The big knock on Boselli was that his career only lasted from 1995 to 2001 because of a shoulder issue, but fans and football journalists were very vocal about his dominance throughout his wait. With three All-Pro and five Pro Bowl nominations to his name, his body of work certainly should’ve been appreciated sooner.

The wait is now over, though, and Jags fans will get to witness history this weekend. For those wanting to watch, the action will be on ESPN on Aug. 6 at noon, and former Jags quarterback Mark Brunell will have the honor of presenting Boselli for enshrinement.
