CU Buffs transfer Eddie Lampkin Jr. finds home in the ACC

Eddie Lampkin Jr. is moving to New York

Only days after entering the transfer portal, former Colorado men’s basketball center Eddie Lampkin Jr. gave his commitment to the ACC’s Syracuse Orange.

Lampkin announced his pledge on Tuesday evening, about one week after his lone season at Colorado concluded in the NCAA Tournament. Before joining the Buffs, he spent the first three years of his college career at TCU.

The 6-foot-11, 255-pound senior started in 36 of Colorado’s 37 games this past season, averaging team-highs in rebounds (7.0) and field goal shooting (57.9%). His 10.6 points per game ranked fifth on the team.

Lampkin was especially productive in the critical month of March. In the Buffs’ six postseason games, he scored at least 13 points three times, including 21 in CU’s March Madness win over Florida.

Syracuse finished 20-12 (11-9 ACC) in head coach Adrian Autry’s first season at the helm.

Fellow Colorado transfers J’Vonne Hadley and Luke O’Brien have each yet to commit, although the former reportedly met virtually with Iowa State and Michigan State.

Colorado big man Eddie Lampkin Jr. to re-enter transfer portal

Eddie Lampkin Jr. will play his final college basketball season elsewhere

The Colorado Buffaloes and Eddie Lampkin Jr. enjoyed only one season together, but it sure was a fun one.

On Wednesday morning, CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported that Lampkin plans to re-enter the transfer portal.

The 6-foot-11 senior big man transferred from TCU last offseason and became a fan favorite in Boulder due to his high energy and crafty playstyle. In his lone season at Colorado, he averaged 10.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game on 57.9% shooting from the field.

Lampkin’s rebounding average led the team, although his durability may have been more important, as he and KJ Simpson were the only Buffs to play in all 37 games.

While Lampkin was a major factor throughout the winningest season in CU men’s hoops history, he stepped it up in the Pac-12 Tournament and the NCAA Tournament, averaging 13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists across six games.

Before he becomes a graduate student next year, Lampkin has an offseason to decide where to take his talents. At the same time, CU head coach Tad Boyle will look to fill the Lampkin-sized hole at the five-spot.

Colorado guard J’Vonne Hadley also confirmed Wednesday he’ll be entering the transfer portal.

CU men’s basketball below full strength early in preseason camp

Tad Boyle’s squad began preseason camp on Monday with a few key players looking to get healthy

With as much attention as the Colorado football team is currently drawing, the Buffs men’s basketball team should draw plenty of eyeballs as well in their upcoming 2023-2024 season.

Top prospect and projected NBA lottery pick Cody Williams is a huge reason why, and head coach Tad Boyle is trying to do whatever it takes to make the NCAA Tournament.

The Buffs, however, held their first preseason practice on Monday without a few prominent names, per Nikki Edwards of CU Sports Report.

J’Vonne Hadley is dealing with an illness but should be back later in the week. KJ Simpson, who should be one of the Pac-12’s top point guards this season, has an ankle injury and Eddie Lampkin Jr., a center who transferred in from TCU, has a back injury that is going to keep him out for some time.

None of that is good news, although the situations with Hadley and Simpson are temporary and Lampkin is expected to be ready when the season begins.

As training camp continues, it will be interesting to see if the Buffs can stay healthy heading into the season, especially with high expectations.

Colorado makes huge splash by landing big man Eddie Lampkin in the portal

.@BuffaloesWire has to be thrilled. Tad Boyle brought the elite TCU big man to Boulder. Colorado just got a lot better.

Among transfer portal pickups in the 2023 college basketball offseason, few are bigger than this one: Colorado and Tad Boyle beat out several other schools for TCU big man Eddie Lampkin. How significant is this pickup? Lampkin was viewed as a core piece of a Final Four contender at TCU. He left the team, however, late in the season, depriving the Horned Frogs of the low-post presence they sorely missed in a close loss to Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. With Lampkin, TCU had Final Four potential. Without him, the Frogs fell short of their bigger goals.

Now Colorado has Lampkin, a central building block for a run at the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Our friends at Buffaloes Wire have more:

“After losing a trio of players to the transfer portal in recent weeks, head coach Tad Boyle reloaded in a big way by landing the commitment of former TCU big man Eddie Lampkin Jr. on Sunday afternoon,” Jack Carlough wrote.

“The 6-foot-11, 263-pound Lampkin picked the Buffs over a final list that included Georgetown, Memphis, Cincinnati, ArkansasFlorida and Xavier.”

Carlough offered this early assessment of CU’s projected starting lineup for next season:

“Colorado’s starting lineup next year will likely include Lampkin at center playing alongside incoming freshman forward Cody Williams, KJ Simpson, Tristan da Silva and Luke O’Brien.”

That’s a strong starting five. If the Buffs have enough help off the bench, they should be an NCAA Tournament team. Their outlook will be even brighter if Williams — a touted freshman — lives up to expectations.

Texas basketball: Potential targets in the transfer portal

Here is a look at a few potential targets Texas could pursue in the transfer portal.

It is officially Rodney Terry’s program in Austin. Texas and Terry agreed to a five-year deal after guiding the Longhorns to the Elite Eight in an interim role.

Texas’ 2022-2023 season was one of the school’s more successful years in recent memory. Texas finished 29-9, took home the Big 12 Tournament title and won three NCAA Tournament games. The Longhorns advanced past the first weekend of March Madness for the first time since 2008.

Terry’s first task as head coach is to rebuild Texas’ roster into a contender yet again. Texas must replace its senior leadership as Marcus Carr, Sir’Jabari Rice, Timmy Allen and Christian Bishop are departing.

With a solid core of young players set to return along with five-star signees Ron Holland and AJ Johnson joining the program, Texas has a strong foundation to start with.

Adding instant impact talent via the transfer portal is going to be a priority for Terry and his staff. Texas has had tons of success in recent years from utilizing the portal.

Here is a look at a few potential targets Texas could pursue in the transfer portal.

Texas basketball might need to act fast for one transfer portal center

Texas may have to contend with Providence and Memphis to land one transfer portal big man.

College basketball free agency is underway just before the NCAA Tournament. It appears two Tournament participants are targeting TCU transfer center Eddie Lampkin for next season.

It would appear Providence head coach Ed Cooley and Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway are working to bring Lampkin to their respective teams. Albeit, it’s fair to question to which team Ed Cooley is recruiting Lampkin.

Cooley has been rumored as a possibility to fill the head coaching vacancy for the legendary basketball program at Georgetown. Regardless of where he coaches, Cooley has a strong pitch that will be difficult to beat.

It’s apparent that Texas will need bigs next season. The Longhorns could bring back Dylan Mitchell to pair with elite Duncanville talent Ron Holland. Even so, neither would give the team the defensive post presence it needs.

With Dylan Disu’s return uncertain and Christian Bishop departing, Texas could use a taller player or two through the transfer portal. Whether or not Lampkin is a priority, that position is a pressing need.

Texas’ search for post players will be worth monitoring over the summer.
