Players to Watch

RB Elijah Gilliam

Where would the Bulldogs be without this guy last week? Gilliam step in and gave a big boost to the Bulldogs run game with 20 carries for 93 yards. Gilliam had only 17 carries for 100 yard last season! With both Malik Sherrod and Devon Rivers banged up, Gilliam could be in line for his for career start and Eastern Washington just gave up over 330 rushing yards last week in their season opener. It could be a big day for Gilliam, Could it be enough to make him RB1 going forward?

WR Erik Brooks

Have yourself a game young man. In his first game as WR1 Brooks did not disappoint with nine catches for 170 yard and two touchdowns. Brooks also caught a 22 yard go ahead touchdown with just under a minute to go, which would end up being the game winning touchdown to shock the Boilermakers.

Now he will look to follow up his week1 performance against a team that really struggled to to defend the pass against FBS teams last year. In the two FBS teams Eastern Washington played last year they gave up a combined 733 passing yards and eight touchdowns through the air. Coming off a career game and being the go to target in this Bulldogs offense, Brooks should have another great game.

Keys to the Game

Finish plays Defense:

The Bulldogs did come away with zero sack and zero turnovers last week but they did create some timely pressures to force Hudson Card to throw some uncomfortable throws and the D-Line against the run couldn’t get any better.

Now the Bulldogs will face another team that likes to play offense through the air. So one of the keys to victory is the Defensive line has to control the line of scrimmage and make Eastern Washington beat on the ground . Lastly finishes tackles. The Dogs had way to many missed tackles and it cost them on the first drive when the Bulldogs missed six tackles on one play which led to a 84 yard touchdown by Purdue. Simple fixs will go along way for the Dogs in this game.

Special Teams

If the there were any negatives from last week it was clearly special teams. A missed FG, two short punts, and the Bulldogs gave up a 98 yard kickoff return to open up the second half.  The Dogs have to clean up these mistakes that could have cost them the game last week. If the Bulldogs defense can control the game then field position will be a factor in this game. Could be a bigger confident booster as well for the Special teams units going forward.

Predictions:

Valley Children’s Stadium will be rocking as there is A expected 39k fans which could lead to sellout closer to game time. The Bulldogs are bringing in a 10 game win streak and are playing home for the first this season. All the momentum will be with the Bulldogs as they hope to make it 11 wins in a row.

Both teams will have something to prove.

Fresno State Football: First Look at 2023 Non-conference Opponents

Purdue | Eastern Washington | Arizona State | Kent State

After hitting the road to open 2023, the Fresno State Bulldogs will open their home schedule when they host the Eastern Washington Eagles in Week 2. EWU didn’t live up to expectations last year but could remain a dangerous opponent if the Bulldogs are tempted to look ahead.

Location: Cheney, Washington

Conference: Big Sky

Series History: This will be the first meeting between Fresno State and Eastern Washington.

2022 Record: 3-8 (2-6 Big Sky)

Head Coach: Aaron Best (seventh year, 44-25 overall). The standard at EWU tends to be pretty high, so it may have come as a surprise when the Eagles fell from being a top-ten FCS squad in 2021 to its first losing season since 2006. A lot of that had to do with a defense which struggled often, giving up 52 points to Sacramento State and 63 to Montana, but it may not take much for them to re-establish themselves as a contender in the rough-and-tumble Big Sky.

Key Players

Efton Chism III, WR

A team that’s built its reputation on strong passing games has at least one reliable target in Chism III for 2023. He’s twice earned third-team all-conference recognition and racked up over 1,000 all-purpose yards in 2022. That included 607 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 62 receptions, so after seeing a team-high 82 targets last year, expect that he’ll be a focal point of the EWU offense.

Blake Gobel, TE

If Chism III is likely to be the primary target in the passing game, Gobel could be a very reliable #2 option. A veteran of 35 career games with the Eagles, he was named a preseason all-Big Sky selection earlier this month after a 2022 season in which he caught nine of 11 targets for 119 yards and two touchdowns. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds, he provides EWU with a big body who could make a difference between the hash marks.

Marlon Jones Jr., CB

Like Chism III, Jones Jr. was a third-team all-Big Sky pick in 2022 after making 52 total tackles, breaking up four passes, and sharing the team lead with three interceptions. That was enough for him to post an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 75.4, which is the best overall among all EWU defenders back for 2023.

Darrien Sampson, CB

One of the most experienced Eagles on the 2023 roster, Sampson has made 27 starts for EWU but had his 2022 campaign cut short by injury. Nonetheless, he managed to make 29 total tackles and make 1.5 tackles for loss and one interception in four games last year. If he can stay healthy, Sampson make a difference.

Brock Harrison, DE

Harrison is one of EWU’s top playmakers in the trenches, starting ten games last year and finishing 2022 with 32 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and two forced fumbles. If the Bulldogs offensive line is slow to come together, he could exploit that.

Overview:

Offense

The Eagles have long boasted of powerful offenses, so while it wasn’t quite elite in 2022, it also wasn’t much of a problem. Despite some quarterback turnover, EWU completed 63.3% of its 395 pass attempts as a team and managed a respectable 7.1 yards per attempt while throwing for 25 total touchdowns against a 2.3% interception rate.

Quarterback also happens to be one of the team’s biggest questions headed into 2023, though. Kekoa Visperas (65.9% completion rate, 322 yards, three touchdowns) spent most of last season as a backup but did get some starting experience late in the year and appears ready to take up the mantle full-time. The Eagles also added two juco signal-callers, Michael Wortham and Jared Taylor, should the need arise to open the competition.

The running game, meanwhile, wasn’t always an emphasis but the trio of Tuna AltahirJustice Jackson, and Micah Smith acquitted themselves well, combining for 1,068 yards and seven touchdowns on 232 total carries. They’ll also benefit from an offensive line that returns four starters, including multi-year starting guard Wyatt Hansen.

The Eagles also bring back a number of pass catchers beyond Chism and Gobel who could be in line for increased production, like Nolan Ulm (29 catches, 396 yards, four touchdowns), Jakobie James (18-228-1), and Anthony Stell Jr. (14-163-1). If Visperas can find his stride early, many of these athletes could benefit from it.

Defense

If Eastern Washington really wants to turn things around, however, they simply must get better on defense. The Eagles coughed up 6.92 yards per play in 2022, second-most among all FCS teams, and a whopping 42.4 points per game despite finishing around the middle of the pack by some critical measures like third-down conversion rate allowed (39.9%, 61st) and red zone defense (79.7%, 43rd).

Improving a pass rush which had only 14 sacks in 11 games will help, but most of the challenge there will be replacing last year’s sack leader, Mitchell Johnson. Just two players, Harrison and Matthew Brown, return after posting at least two sacks last fall, so lots of new faces could get a crack at stepping up.

The better news is that five different linebackers who played at least 100 snaps also return, a group led by redshirt senior Jaren Banks (66 total tackles, four tackles for loss) and junior Derek Tommasini (64 tackles, 3.5 TFLs). Jones Jr. and Samspon provide a veteran cornerback tandem, but the Eagles might have two new starters at safety. Armani Orange and Kentrell Williams Jr. both saw plenty of spot duty in 2022, however, and might be the longer-term replacements out of the fall camp.

Early Prediction

EWU seems well-positioned to bounce back and be competitive in the Big Sky, but it doesn’t seem likely they’ll face another defense as primed for a big year as the one they’ll face in Fresno. Call this one a comfortable win without a ton of surprises against a solid FCS opponent.

North Dakota State vs Eastern Washington FCS Playoff Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS Playoff go to BetMGM

Why Eastern Washington Will Win

Eastern Washington (5-1) needed a game to warm up, and then the passing game became the EWU passing game.

The Eagles had the third-best passing game in the FCS averaging 389 yards per game thanks to a massive run by Eric Barriere, a veteran who threw six picks but did just about everything else right. He threw for close to 2,200 yards with 18 touchdowns, showed off the big arm to push it deep, spread it around well, and did a great job cranking up the offense.

Now it has to roll against the Bison.

This is still a great North Dakota State team, but it’s not the killer of years past and it doesn’t have the big-time passing game to keep up in a shootout. NDSU is averaging a paltry 137 passing yards per game, but …

Why North Dakota State Will Win

The offensive line has taken over.

No, the North Dakota State (5-2) passing game hasn’t been anything great, but the ground game continues to be excellent, hitting over 200 yards in three of the seven games behind a front five that’s not allowing anything in the backfield.

The Bison defense is fine against the pass. It could stand to come up with more takeaways – just two interceptions in the seven game spring run – but the problem is against the run. NDSU is 5-0 when allowing fewer than 170 rushing yards and is 0-2 when it doesn’t.

Eastern Washington is about the passing game, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Eagles average 174 yards per game on the ground.

It’s never a positive to go against North Dakota State in a huge game, and there’s a shot the offensive line takes over and the team takes its level up a few notches, but Eastern Washington has too much offense along with the quarterback in Barriere.

This is a multi-level Eagle attack that can score in a variety of ways, and it has an offensive line that can hold up just line North Dakota State’s front five can.

No matter what – and forgetting that these two aren’t quite the superstars they normally are – this is the marquee matchup in the first round of the FCS Playoffs.

You’re never right to go against the Bison – especially at home – but …

Northern Arizona (1-0) vs Eastern Washington (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the FCS, go to BetMGM

Why Northern Arizona Will Win

Now that’s how you open a season.

Oklahoma State transfer Keondre Wudtee threw the game-winning touchdown pass in the final moments to get by Southern Utah 34-33. Southern Utah might not be anything special, but it was still a good win in a fun game – it turned into a shootout after needing a while to get going.

Idaho isn’t supposed to be anything special, either, and it managed to get by Eastern Washington 28-21. The Vandals almost threw for 300 yards and hit on enough big plays to pull it off.

Wudtee and the passing game have to keep things moving. There isn’t going to be a whole of on the ground, but control the clock, keep the EWU offense off the field, and …

Why Eastern Washington Will Win

Eastern Washington is better than that.

The Eagles have the talent, and they have the offensive parts to be far sharper and far more dangerous than they were in Idaho. Eric Barriere threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns, and he should be able to do that again against a NAU defense that’s going to need a while to get nasty, if that’s even possible.

Southern Utah’s Justin Miller threw five touchdown passes, the Thunderbirds kept on pressing, and they controlled the game right up until the very end with the ball in their possession for over 40 minutes.

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Washington got the mulligan out of the way.

It’s a much, much better team than it looked against Idaho, and it’s about to show it with a big day from the passing attack that’s going to be more sensational than satisfactory.

Eastern Washington (0-0) vs Idaho (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Eastern Washington Will Win

Here comes the offense and here comes the fun … again.

The Eastern Washington attack gets back star QB Eric Barriere and just enough good parts to the No. 1 FCS attack in 2019 to be excellent. It might not be quite the high-flying fun show right out of the gate considering so many starters are being replaced, but the systems are in place to bomb away.

Idaho is rebuilding even more, and it needs a whole lot of work for an offensive line that allowed everyone into the backfield. The Eastern Washington defensive front should live behind the line, but …

Why Idaho Will Win

The Vandals have to take advantage of the lost Eagle starters with a decent first half.

Head coach Paul Petrino doesn’t have a ton of big-time talents from a 2019 team that struggled with its consistency, but there are more quarterback options ready to make a push for a passing game that needs to be better. There are just enough decent receivers to ask for more, and there might be a real, live defense.

Tre Walker is a big-time linebacker and good hitter working behind one of the better-looking defensive fronts in the Petrino era, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Eastern Washington offense will get going early and won’t have any issues despite all the new personnel. Yes, Idaho was able to pull off the win back on 2019, and yes, the Vandals have promise, and …

That win back in 2019 was an aberration. The Idaho defensive front will be solid, but the secondary will have a whole lot of issues.
