Why East Tennessee State Will Win

The Buccaneers have just enough of an offense to at least provide a little bit of a push in the first half.

They buckle in the second halves of games, but they’re good at getting out to a decent start with a strong running game that averages five yards per carry – Jacob Saylors is a good back to worry about – and the receiving corps has enough options to spread the ball around.

The defense makes up for issues with plenty of takeaways, but …

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Can East Tennessee State stop the pass? Not really.

110th in the FCS against the pass, the Bucs allowed 265 yards per game, but that’s not even the real issue. It’s the inability to generate any pressure as quarterbacks are connecting on way too many passes.

Mississippi State doesn’t have to do anything crazy. All it has to do is hit the midrange throws like it normally does and control the game with a ton of manageable third down plays.

What’s Going To Happen

After struggling against Auburn and losing three of the last four games, even this late in the season the Bulldogs have some work to do before dealing with the trip to Ole Miss.

It’s Senior Day, the offense needs to get its timing back – Mississippi State needs to be steadier at connecting on 70% of its throws again – and it’ll use this to get ready for the Egg Bowl showdown.

The Ole Miss game is Thursday – the idea will be to get this over with fast to get the starters off the field.

Adrian Meronk wins Horizon Irish Open, achieves something no other Polish golfer has done before

Meronk became the first golfer from Poland to earn status on the DP World Tour.

Adrian Meronk kissed the trophy and admired the names that have won the Horizon Irish Open before him.

Meronk, clinging to a one-stroke overnight lead, played the final four holes in 4 under en route to shooting 66 at Mount Juliet Estate in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, and win his first title on the DP World Tour.

“It’s a dream come true,” he said. “This is what we practice for everyday and I’m so happy.”

Meronk trailed by one stroke with four holes to go but a late birdie barrage and an eagle lifted him to a 72-hole total of 20-under 268 and a three-stroke victory over Ryan Fox of New Zealand.

Meronk, a 29-year-old former top-ranked junior, became the first from Poland to earn status on the DP World Tour and had two previous runner-up finishes. Now he’s the first Polish golfer to notch a victory on the circuit.

Fox, who made 22 birdies for the week, closed with 64 to grab the clubhouse lead at 17-under 271. But Meronk, who played college golf at East Tennessee State, tied for the lead with a 20-foot birdie putt at 15, clenched his right fist as he took the lead with a 15-foot birdie at 16, and stretched the lead to three with a 25-foot eagle putt from the fringe at 17.

“Just a relief,” said the 6-foot-6 big man of his third straight one putt that propelled him to the winner’s circle to join the likes of Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Colin Montgomerie and Rory McIlroy with his name on the champion’s trophy.

Thriston Lawrence was alone in third place, a stroke behind Fox. Scotland’s David Law, American John Catlin and Paraguay’s Fabrizio Zanotti all earned spots in The 150th Open—via the Open Qualifying Series—for all finishing tied for fourth at 15 under.

LSU adds more beef to the offensive line with transfer Tre’Mond Shorts

LSU adds another offensive tackle to the mix.

The coaching staff is continuing to restock the offensive line for Brad Davis as they head into 2022. After missing out on ULL’s O’Cyrus Torrence who committed to the Florida Gators, they landed one of the top FCS offensive tackles with Tre’Mond Shorts of East Tennessee State on Tuesday.

Shorts made the decision on Tuesday and shared the commitment on his Twitter account. Shorts played left tackle for East Tennessee State, including 40-consecutive starts for the team. He along with Miles Frazier gives the team depth and options on the outside at offensive tackle. Both Frazier and Shorts played left tackle but could be the starting tackles as the team prepares for the spring.

The team also added five-star signee Will Campbell to the team and return the initial starter Cam Wire in 2022.

Shorts ranked among the top 12 transfers according to The Athletic (subscription required).

The 6-foot-4, 326-pound left tackle is looking to move up a level for his super senior season after a decorated career at the FCS level. He was an All-American once again this fall with more than 70 knockdown blocks, according to his O-line coach Matt McCutchan, and the team captain finished with 40 consecutive starts for the Bucs. He’s claimed offers from LSU, Nebraska, North Carolina, Virginia, Purdue and Rutgers, among others.

The team has added 13 high school signees and 10 transfers so far for the 2022 recruiting class. That leaves nine spots for the team that could include two potential signees (Jacoby Mathews, TreVonte’ Citizen) and more incoming transfers. Missouri defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo is expected to make his announcement on Tuesday as well.

Quarles comes to East Tennessee State after serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Furman. He played at Jefferson County High School in Dandridge, Tennessee.
