Former Seahawks, Ravens free safety Earl Thomas arrested in Texas

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has the details.

Former Seahawks and Ravens free safety Earl Thomas was arrested on Friday in his home state of Texas.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has the details.

“Thomas is charged with a third-degree felony for violating a protective order two or more times within 12 months. Via court records, Thomas was arrested in Orange County, Texas on Friday, May 13… The warrant was issued days after Thomas launched a public effort to get back in the league.”

Thomas recently told Adam Schefter at ESPN that he’s ready to return to the NFL. At one time he was the top free safety in the league but he hasn’t played since the 2019 season and was cut by the Ravens for punching a teammate. Thomas has played in 140 games, making the Pro Bowl seven times and earning three first-team All-Pro nominations.

The warrant was related to threatening text messages Thomas allegedly sent to his ex-wife.

Forner Seattle Seahawks and Baltimore Ravens DB Earl Thomas is the subject of an arrest warrant.

On April 27, Magistrate George Thomas signed a warrant charging Thomas with a third-degree felony for allegedly violating the protective order two or more times within 12 months.

Thomas has said he hoped to return to the NFL for the 2022 season. He has not been on a team since preseason of 2020 with the Ravens.

Per USA Today:

Trey Dolezal, an Austin lawyer and sports agent who represents Thomas in an ongoing divorce, said he left a message for Thomas to let him know about the arrest warrant. He said the warrant stems from Thomas reaching out to his wife to see their children.

“They were consciously and collectively working together to see his kids,” Dolezal said. “I don’t really understand how he could be in violation by working together to visit with his children.”

Thomas was a seven-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team All-Pro, and Super Bowl champion before derailing his career. He was released by the Ravens in August of 2020 after a preseason incident that saw him punch teammate Chuck Clark.

Former All-Pro safety Earl Thomas “ready” to resume his NFL career

Earl Thomas wants to get back on the football field.

Earl Thomas has been out of the NFL game for the past two seasons.

The three-time All-Pro safety was released from the Baltimore Ravens after a practice altercation with a teammate in 2019 and has been a free agent since.

The longtime Seahawk was a member of Seattle’s “legion on boom” and boasts over 30 career interceptions. He played a huge role in the Seahawks’ Super Bowl run in 2014.

Thomas told ESPN’s Adam Schefter he is “ready” to make a comeback to the league after his two-year halt.

“I’m in shape. My timing is on point – I’m proud of that.”

Known as one of the best defensives backs in the NFL for much of his career, Thomas should draw interest from many organizations. The 33-year-old believes he still has something left in the tank.

Earl Thomas, former Seahawks safety says he’s ready to play again

Thomas hasn’t played in the league since 2019.

Former Seahawks safety Earl Thomas says he wants to resume his NFL career in 2022, according to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN.

Thomas was a first-round draft pick by Seattle back in 2010 and became arguably the most-important piece for the great Legion of Boom defenses. He played nine years and 125 games for the Seahawks, totaling 28 interceptions, seven Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections. Thomas’ penchant for making clutch stops played a huge role in the team’s defensive dominance from 2012-2015.

After falling out with coach Pete Carroll over his contract and famously giving him the finger as he was carted off the field in Arizona, Thomas was released and landed in Baltimore. He didn’t last long there, though. He only played one season in a Ravens uniform and was released the following offseason after reportedly punching one of his teammates.

Thomas hasn’t played in the league since 2019. He turns 33 in May.

Seahawks: Ranking the 12 highest-value draft picks of the Pete Carroll, John Schneider era

Here’s how we rank the 12 highest-value picks the team has made in the draft the last 12 years.

If the Seahawks are going to get back to the Super Bowl they’ll need to start getting better returns in the NFL draft, beginning with the extra picks they got from Denver in the Russell Wilson trade. Of course that will be easier said than done considering their recent history.

While their early drafts under coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider netted an awesome amount of talent, after the legendary 2012 class this team’s drafts have gotten progressively much worse and only a handful of high-quality picks have been made since the franchise’s crowning moment at the end of the 2013 season.

For some inspiration, let’s take a look at what’s worked before. Here’s how we rank the 12 highest-value picks the team has made in the draft the last 12 years.

Bobby Wagner shares classy farewell message for Seattle

Bobby Wagner’s bad-look exit represents the lowest point for a Seahawks front office that has fallen out with more than one defensive star over the years.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the team’s decision to cut Bobby Wagner was a heartbreaking one. He hit the exact right word to describe the emotion most Seattle fans felt when the news broke on Twitter. Later, we learned from Wagner that they didn’t even tell him he was being released and he found out the same way we did.

While it’s possible it was an honest mistake, that it was allowed to happen represents the lowest low for a front office that has made a habit of insulting their greatest defensive players on their way out the door. To their credit, they have since apologized.

Here’s what general manager John Schneider said about it, per Bob Condotta at the Seattle Times.

That’s on me. . . I own that. I wish I could have handled things better in that regard, from a communication standpoint. I owe it to him. The organization owes it to him.”

Sometimes an apology isn’t enough, though.

Wagner leaving for the Rams on a five-year, $50 million deal brings to mind Richard Sherman, who signed with the NFC West rival 49ers four years ago after an ugly exit from Seattle.

Both were/are fantastic players, but we can understand how things went south with Sherman. One can also find a gray area with how their all-time great free safety Earl Thomas left the team on bad terms.

However, Bobby Wagner unequivocally deserved better from this organization. Unlike Sherman, Thomas or some of the other high-profile players who have fallen out with Pete Carroll and John Schneider, Wagner never once did anything to embarass the team and only ever carried himself with the utmost grace, humility and respect.

It comes as no surprise then that Wagner is sharing a classy farewell message for Seattle as he departs for LA.

Notice that the word “Seattle” is mentioned three times and “Seahawks” none in his statement. There’s a very-good reason for that and it’s something this front office will have to reconcile with some day.

For now we’re grateful for the 10 years that Wagner put in and wish things had ended differently.

Seahawks: Who are the top 18 franchise leaders in forced fumbles?

Perhaps they can draw some inspiration from the all-time franchise leaders in this department.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll likes to preach about the ball, stressing the importance of turnovers on defense. It’s a lesson that will need more emphasis from the new staff as Seattle only has one true ballhawk on the roster and forced just nine fumbles in 2021, the fourth-fewest in the NFL.

Perhaps they can draw some inspiration from the all-time franchise leaders in this department. These 18 players are on top.

Signing this veteran safety named Panthers’ best last potential offseason move

According to Field Yates at ESPN, signing safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is the best last offseason move that Carolina can make.

The Carolina Panthers’ roster for the 2021 season is mostly set. As always, there will be some surprise cuts before the games begin, but we have a good idea of who will be on the field come Week 1.

One spot that we don’t have any real clue about is Tre Boston’s former position at free safety. Since releasing him for a total of $3.5 million in cap savings, Carolina hasn’t signed or drafted any proven replacement at the position. It’s possible one of the DBs currently on the roster will surprise us and turn out to be a solid starter. However, it’s not hard to see things going bad on the back end if no upgrades are made.

That’s why bringing in a veteran at this spot is a good idea. According to Field Yates at ESPN, signing safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is the best last offseason move that Carolina can make.

“The Panthers have reshaped their safety group this offseason, including a full-time move to the slot for last year’s rookie sensation Jeremy Chinn. The team reportedly took a look at Clinton-Dix a little while back, so there’s an established level of curiosity. He has bounced around in recent years and isn’t a definite starter by any means, but depth at a position that looks light right now is a good pre-camp investment.”

Adding Clinton-Dix isn’t a bad idea, but he is well past his prime at this point in his career. A better option on the field would be Earl Thomas. However, it appears whatever he got up to behind the scenes in Seattle and Baltimore was enough to scare off the other 30 teams permanently.

Whatever path coach Matt Rhule and GM Scott Fitterer decide to take, they have to act quickly if their plans at free safety fall apart.
