On this day, Earl Shannon and Vin Baker were born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, big man Vincent Lamont “Vin” Baker was born in Lake Wales, Florida back in 1971. Baker played his college ball at the University of Hartford in nearby Connecticut, where he won America East Player of the Year in 1993 before being selected with the eighth overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA draft that same year.

The future Celtic would make the 1994 NBA All-Rookie First Team in his inaugural season in the league, and play stints with the Bucks and (then) Seattle Supersonics (now, Oklahoma City Thunder) before joining Boston.

That would materialize via Baker being traded to the Celtics with Shammond Williams to Boston for Kenny Anderson, Joseph Forte, and Vitaly Potapenko.

Today’s installment focuses on the 31 players who wore No. 20 over the years as of August 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

On this day, Al Horford and Rasheed Wallace became Celtics, and Earl Shannon and Frank Ramsey left us.

On this date in Boston Celtic history, fan-favorite big man Al Horford signed with the team in 2016. A standout at the University of Florida, where the Dominican center won two national titles in consecutive seasons, Horford was drafted third overall by the Atlanta Hawks, with whom he spent nine seasons before choosing to sign with the Celtics.

The former Gator left Atlanta in free agency after the Hawks were swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs two years in a row. He signed a four-year, $113 million contract with Boston. The Celtics made the Eastern Conference finals twice during Horford’s first tenure with the team.

The Puerto Plata native also made an All-Star team and an All-Defensive second team while with Boston in that stint.

On this day, Boston drafted Cedric Maxwell and Kevin McHale, Earl Shannon and Ben Clyde were born, Al Brightman passed, and Game 3 of the 2008 NBA Finals was lost.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team drafted small forward Cedric Maxwell out of UNC Charlotte with the 12th overall pick of the 1977 NBA draft, their sole selection of note.

Maxwell would play eight seasons for the Celtics, averaging 13.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, and would win two championships with Boston in that stretch (in 1981 and 1984), winning Finals MVP in 1984. After losing his starting role to forward Kevin McHale after an injury, the North Carolina native would be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for legendary sixth man center Bill Walton.

Maxwell maintains a close relationship with the Celtics and their fans to this day, hosting an eponymous podcast and making frequent appearances on local sports media.
