Penn State wide receiver lands on watch list for Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award

Is this Penn State wide receiver the best offensive player in college football from the state of Texas?

Who is the top college football player from the state of Texas? It’s a stacked field of options, but mixed in that conversation is Penn State wide receiver Parker Washington.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award honors college football’s top offensive player with that player required to either have been born in Texas, played high school in Texas or played college football in Texas. Washington, who is from Texas, qualifies to be in the running for the award.

Washington was Penn State’s second-leading receiver in 2020, behind only Jahan Dotson. Washington recorded 489 receiving yards on 36 receptions with six touchdowns. He heads into the 2021 season looking to continue to being a contributing factor in the Penn State offense, which is now under the direction of former Texas offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.

The earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award was first presented in 2013 to Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty. Only one player from the Big Ten has won the award so far, with that being Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins in 2019. Last year’s winner was Florida quarterback Kyle Trask.

No wide receiver has won the award so far. Quarterbacks have won the award six out of the eight years it has been presented, with running backs winning the other two.

If Parker manages to win this award, then Penn State should be in for a pretty fun season.

Florida’s QB Kyle Trask earns 2021 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award

While Trask lost out on the storied Heisman to Devonta Smith, he still managed to bring home some hardware from his record-setting season.

The Florida Gators had one of the most prolific offenses in college football this past season, led by quarterback Kyle Trask. The redshirt senior was among the best at his position during the 2020 campaign, earning him a spot as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

While Trask lost out on the storied award to Alabama Crimson Tide receiver Devonta Smith, he still managed to bring home some hardware from his record-setting season behind center for the Gators. On Thursday, he was honored with the 2021 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, presented annually to the nationā€™s outstanding Division I college offensive player who was either born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

The full press release is posted below.

The Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and SPORTyler announced today Kyle Trask, quarterback, University of Florida as the recipient of the 2020 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award presented by Earl Campbell.

Trask received the award during The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award virtual ceremony January 28, 2021.

ā€œIā€™m honored to present the award to Kyle Trask,ā€ Earl Campbell said. ā€œAll of these players had incredible seasons. They all deserved their place as a finalist.ā€

Kyle Trask threw for 4,283 yards and 43 touchdowns this season as he led one of the most explosive offenses in the country in theĀ Florida Gators.

The Manvel, Texas native led the FBS this season in total touchdowns (46) and touchdown passes, while ranking second in passing yards.

Traskā€™s three touchdown passes against Alabama in the Southeastern Conference Championship GameĀ made him the ninth player in FBS history to throw at least 43 touchdown passes through the first 11 games of a season. Of those nine, Trask isĀ one of three to accomplish the feat with fewer than 50 attempts per game.

Trask set a single-season school record with five 400-yard passing games; he was one of two FBS players this year and one of two SEC players (Mac Jones) since at least 1996 with five such games in a season.

Trask was responsible for 46 touchdowns (43 passing, 3 rushing), which is second on UFā€™s singleĀ season record list to Tim Tebowā€™s 55 (32 pass, 23 rush) from his 2007 Heisman-winningĀ campaign. HisĀ 46 touchdowns are also tied with Texas A&Mā€™s Johnny Manziel (2013) for sixth on theĀ SEC single-season record list.

Trask also broke the single-season school record for passing yards per game (356.9), narrowly finishing ahead of Rex Grossmanā€™s 2001 season (354.2).

The other four finalists for the award were:

Jaelon Darden, North Texas, WR, Senior.Ā  Houston, TX (Eisenhower HS) Conference USA

Dā€™Eriq King, Miami, QB, R-Senior.Ā  Manvel, TX (Manvel HS) ACC

Sincere McCormick, UTSA, RB, Sophomore.Ā  Converse, TX (Judson HS) Conference USA

Kellen Mond, Texas A&M, QB, Senior.Ā  San Antonio, TX (IMG Academy) SEC

Texas Football: Sam Ehlinger and Joshua Moore recognized for efforts

The Texas Longhorns duo of Sam Ehlinger and Joshua Moore recognized for their efforts against UTEP. Ehlinger found Moore seven times.

After the first snap of the Texas Longhorns and UTEP Miners game, we knew it was going to be a special night. On the very first snap of the game, Sam Ehlinger found Joshua Moore on slant that he took 78 yards to the endzone. A great start to the Sam Ehlinger-Mike Yurcich era as it was apparent that this offense was going to attack the defense through the air.

The combination of Ehlinger and Moore connected seven times for 127 yards and the lone touchdown. Moore finished with 92 yards after the catch in this game, most coming on one play. The two showed so much promise in this game and Moore could have had another score if Ehlinger didn’t opt to go with tight end Cade Brewer, who caught one of Sam’s five first half touchdown throws.

All in all Ehlinger completed 25 of 33 passes for 426 yards and five touchdowns. However, what he did without the benefit of play action was huge for the senior passer.

  • 19/23 passing
  • 309 yards
  • 4 touchdowns
  • 13.4 yard per attempt
  • perfect NFL quarterback rating 158.3

For his efforts, Ehlinger picked up his third player of the week honors, this time from the Earl Campbell-Tyler Rose Award.

Wide receiver Joshua Moore earned honorable mention from the Award committee.

Longhorns Legend Earl Campbell delivers gift to Guy Fieri

The Longhorns legendary running back Earl Campbell surprised celebrity chef Guy Fieri with a gift. Of course it was a Longhorn.

It isn’t everyday that you receive a gift delivered by a Texas Longhorns legend, but that is what happened to celebrity chef Guy Fieri. The Mayor of Flavortown received a gift from Earl Campbell on Wednesday. The first ever Heisman Trophy winner in Longhorns history delivered a gift, of course it was a Longhorn.

Campbell played for the Longhorns from 1974 to 1977. During that time he racked up 4,443 yards and 40 touchdowns. He left the school as the all-time leading rusher in both categories. The records stood until another Heisman winning running back came to town in Ricky Williams. Campbell would go on to have a Hall of Fame career in the NFL.

Earl Campbell even signed the Longhorn for Guy, who claimed that the Tyler Rose was his favorite all-time player in a tweet. This comes on the same day as the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award watch list was released. Despite his fame, that had to be a surreal moment for the celebrity chef.

Ohio State running back J.K Dobbins wins Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award

Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins has been named the winner of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award for 2019.

You had a feeling it would happen, and now it’s official. Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins has been named the winner of the Tyler Rose Early Campbell Award, given from the best player from Texas annually.

Dobbins, from La Grange, Texas committed to Ohio State without even stepping on campus. He suffered a pretty severe ankle injury his senior year of high school, but became a force from the time he arrived in Columbus through his last game in the Fiesta Bowl.

He is now off to the NFL, having declared for the draft after his junior year, and leaves Ohio State as its second-leading rusher of all-time, and single-season program rushing record-holder.

If there’s one thing we know, those boys from Texas take a lot of pride in football played in the Lone Star state, so this has to be a proud moment for Dobbins and his friends and family. The award was presented to Dobbins by Earl Campbell himself at an awards banquet on Wednesday.

ā€œIā€™m honored to present the award to J.K. Dobbins,ā€ Earl Campbell said. ā€œAll of these players had an amazing season. They all deserved their place as a finalist.ā€

Dobbins beat out other finalists, Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer, SMU quarterback Shane Buechele, and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts.

This is obviously a well-deserved honor for one of the best to ever suit up in the scarlet and gray.

J.K. Dobbins semifinalist for Doak Walker, Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards

Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins has been named a semifinalist for the Doak Walker and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards.

We’re getting into the season where many of the annual college football awards are starting to cull their lists down. We’ve already gotten good news on the Ohio State front with the Bronco Nagurski and Walter Camp Awards, and now we’ve got some from the folks at Southern Methodist University that hand out the Doak Walker Award.

The semifinalists for the award that goes to the best college running back annually were announced Thursday, and Buckeye running back J.K. Dobbins was among the ten names that made the cut.

Looking ahead, three finalists will be announced on December 2, with the winner being announced during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN Thursday, December 12.

Dobbins, a native of LaGrange, Texas was also announced as one of eleven semifinalists for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award that goes to the best college football player from the state of Texas.

It has been a fantastic year for Ohio State, and the individual accolades that multiple players are still alive for only buoy that fact.
