Eagles Wire shares pick analysis of Georgia DT Jalen Carter

‘Carter is versatile and can play on the edge, giving the Eagles even more depth and rotations.’

The Philadelphia Eagles gained some serious value by taking Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter with the No. 9 pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft on Thursday night.

Carter was widely considered one of the top, if not the best, prospect in the entire draft, but off-the-field concerns likely caused a drop down the board.

USA TODAY Sports’ Eagles Wire gave their analysis of Carter’s selection.

“There was talk of teams like Las Vegas taking Carter off their draft boards, but he lands with a gold-standard organization filled with solid veteran mentors. On offense, Carter will have Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, and A.J. Brown, among others, to lean on. Defensively, he’ll be surrounded by solid and high-character veterans.”

The former five-star prospect is coming off an All-American season for the Bulldogs as an anchor on the defensive line, racking up 32 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles as a junior.

“Carter is versatile and can play on the edge, giving the Eagles even more depth and rotations.”

Eagles’ announcer Merrill Reese on Jalen Hurts: His arm strength is right there with top QB’s

Philadelphia Eagles’ legendary broadcaster Merrill Reese says Jalen Hurts’ arm strength is right there with the better arms in the NFL

Much has been made about Jalen Hurts’ and his perceived lack of arm strength.

One of the biggest concerns about Hurts’ future with the franchise stems from the perception that the third-year quarterback lacks the big-time arm strength needed to leaded Philadelphia back to postseason prominence.

Over his first two seasons, Hurts has averaged 12.3 yards per completion, the 3rd-highest average in the NFL since 2020 among QBs with a minimum of 500 attempts (behind DeShaun Watson’s 12.6 and Jimmy Garoppolo’s 12.4), according to Reuben Frank.

Hurts has the 3rd-highest average by any Eagles quarterback in the last 50 years (behind Michael Vick’s 12.9 and Ron Jaworski’s 12.9) per Frank.

Head coach Nick Sirianni previously gave Hurts’ arm strength a vote of confidence, and now a legendary broadcaster has also weighed in.

Merrill Reese told Dave Spadaro that Hurts’ arm strength is on par with some of the top passers in the NFL.

Hurts doesn’t have to have the strongest arm, and if he can show improved accuracy and decision-making, the doubts should start to quiet down.

Improved anticipation and ball delivery could catapult Philadelphia to the top of the NFC playoff picture.

Full 7-round Eagles mock 1.0 as we kick off the 2022 NFL draft season

Full 7-round #Philadelphia #Eagles #mockdraft 1.0 as we kick off the #NFLDraft2022 season with 7 versatile defenders and 3 additions on offense

The Eagles are heading off into an intriguing 2022 NFL offseason that features three-first round picks, valuable salary-cap space, and several different routes the franchise can choose to follow.

If Jalen Hurts is the quarterback for at least the next calendar year, then Philadelphia could choose to build around the quarterback, they could push a first-round pick back to 2023 where the quarterback will be much more talented, or they could all-in on a player like Russell Wilson or DeShaun Watson.

It’ll be an interesting lead-up to April’s NFL draft and we’re adding to the fun with our first full seven-round mock draft 1.0.

In our first seven-round mock draft using Pro Football Network’s mock draft simulator, we avoided making any trades in this first version, choosing to fully restock a roster that has holes on both sides of the ball, utilizing seven of the 10 picks on high-profile, and highly versatile defensive players.
