Zech McPhearson says goodbye to Philadelphia as Eagles begin 53-man roster cuts

Zech McPhearson says goodbye to Philadelphia as Eagles begin 53-man roster cuts

The Philadelphia Eagles are amid their 53-man roster cutdown, and one veteran cornerback is saying goodbye to the city.

The news hasn’t been revealed, but Zech McPhearson may have let the cat out of the bag when he posted a goodbye note to Philadelphia on his social media pages.

McPhearson missed the 2023 season after suffering an Achilles injury in a preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns. McPhearson had been taking snaps as a slot cornerback when he was injured.

With Philadelphia overhauling the cornerback position in 2024, McPhearson appears to be the odd man out, but he could catch on elsewhere or potentially return to the practice squad.

Report: Eagles release offensive guard Max Scharping ahead of 53-man roster deadline

The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing Max Scharping ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline

The Eagles and 31 other NFL teams are racing to trim their rosters down to the 53-man limit ahead of Tuesday’s deadline, and Philadelphia’s first cut is reserve lineman Max Scharping.

Aaron Wilson is reporting that Scharping will be released on Monday.

Scharping was signed this spring after having 33 career starts and was expected to bring more versatility and depth to the offensive line group.

Scharping, a sixth-year player out of Northern Illinois University, was originally a second-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2019. He spent his first three seasons (2019-21) with Houston before being acquired by Cincinnati on waivers before the ’22 season. Scharping played in 14 regular-season games for the Bengals and then started each of the team’s three 2022-2023 postseason contests at right guard.

9 recently cut or waived players the Eagles should consider adding

Nine recently cut or waived players the Philadelphia Eagles should consider adding

The Eagles trimmed their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday, and as the team builds a practice squad, GM Howie Roseman could look to add more talent and personnel.

With Philadelphia focusing on the Lions, the team will likely have a few waiver wire targets that could land on the practice squad or replace a bubble player already on the roster.

With waiver claims starting at noon, here are nine recently cut players the Eagles should consider signing.

Eagles to waive CB Tay Gowan

Philadelphia Eagles waive cornerback Tay Gowan

According to Adam Schefter, Tay Gowan is being waived by the Eagles, and the move coincides with the team acquiring Chauncey Gardner-Johnson from the Saints.

A 2021 sixth-round pick, Gowan could return to Philadelphia on the practice squad, and he joins Mario Goodrich, Josh Blackwell, Jaquiski Tartt, and Anthony Harris in the group of defensive backs waived or released.

Eagles to waive DT Marvin Wilson

The Philadelphia Eagles are waiving former FSU defensive tackle Marvin Wilson

The Eagles are waiving defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, expecting to return to the 16-man practice squad if he clears waivers.  Wilson had a solid training camp but will likely lose to Marlon Tuipuloutu for the final spot on the 53-man roster.

Wilson, 23, spent all last year on the Eagles’ practice squad, playing in one game against the Cowboys in the season finale.

Eagles to release Le’Raven Clark

The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran offensive tackle Le’Raven Clark

The Eagles have one of the deepest offensive lines in the NFL, and Le’Raven Clark is a casualty of such depth.

Adam Schefter is reporting that Clark has been released as the team works to trim down to 53 players ahead of the season opener at Detroit.

A versatile tackle that can play both sides, Clark could return to the practice squad.

Eagles to waive CB Mario Goodrich

Philadelphia Eagles to waive cornerback Mario Goodrich

The Eagles are waiving one of the top young cornerbacks, as Ian Rapoport reports that Mario Goodrich has been waived.

The Eagles didn’t draft a cornerback and then signed the former Clemson star to a massive, $217,000 guaranteed undrafted free agent deal.

During his career at Clemson, Goodrich logged 84 tackles (0.5 for loss), 15 pass breakups, five interceptions, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery while playing 1,116 snaps over 47 games (16 starts).

Goodrich could return to the practice squad.

Eagles to waive QB Reid Sinnett

Philadelphia Eagles to waive quarterback Reid Sinnett, leaving the team with two signal-callers as the season opener approaches.

Philadelphia may enter the 2022 NFL regular season with just two quarterbacks after the team waived Reid Sinnett, per Tom Peliserro.

The Eagles gave Reid Sinnett a chance to claim the third quarterback spot and possibly stake claim to the backup job if Gardner Minshew moves on in 2023.

Even with an increase in in-game action, Sinnett completed 25 of 48 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns with one interception while averaging 5.29 yards per attempt and was sacked six times.

Sinnett could return to Philadelphia’s practice squad if he clears waivers.

Eagles to release WR Greg Ward

The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing veteran wide receiver Greg Ward with an injury settlement

The Greg Ward era is over in Philadelphia as the team is releasing the veteran wide receiver with an injury settlement.

A former quarterback at the University of Houston who transitioned to wide receiver in the NFL, Ward signed with the Eagles as an undrafted free agent before their Super Bowl season.

Ward spent most of his first 2.5 seasons on the practice squad before becoming the full-time slot receiver. He posted 53 receptions for 419 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns in 16 games during Philadelphia’s playoff run.

In 2021, Ward’s production slipped during Nick Sirianni’s first year as head coach, as the receiver logged just seven catches for 95 yards and three touchdowns after DeVonta Smith’s arrival and Quez Watkin’s rise up the depth chart.

With A.J. Brown and Zach Pascal now on the roster, Ward became a roster longshot.
