BOOM! Ohio State gets commitment from five-star quarterback

Top-ten rated quarterback Dylan Raiola has committed to Ohio State.

As commitments go, this is a pretty big one. Ohio State has received a verbal pledge from five-star 2024 quarterback Dylan Raiola.

Raiola is from Chandler, Arizona, and chose the Buckeyes over other programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Oregon. The highly coveted prospect is the first commitment for Ryan Day in the 2024 class.

Getting a quarterback of this caliber early on should help lure in other highly touted recruits. In fact, Raiola has wasted no time connecting with other OSU targets via Twitter inviting them to join Buckeye Nation.

Raiola is ranked as the No. 3 quarterback in 2024 and the No. 8 overall player according to 247Sports composite rankings.

As of now, Ohio State does not have a quarterback committed in the 2023 class. Even if Ryan Day doesn’t get a top-rated signal-caller in this class, the QB room looks stacked for years to come.

This will most likely be C.J. Stroud’s final season in scarlet and gray setting up a battle between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown for next year. Both McCord and Brown are five-star prospects as well. Raiola could challenge for the starting spot when he arrives on campus, but it would be hard to see second and third-year guys getting passed. Either way, Raiola’s commitment puts the Buckeyes in very good position and the future continues to look bright under Day’s leadership.

Ohio State football recruiting: Dijon Johnson commits; Dylan Raiola, others visit

Highly ranked prospects and top-tier quarterbacks crowded Columbus for Ohio State’s spring game.

Ohio State football’s spring game served as more than an exhibition contest. There was massive recruitment activity on the sidelines, according to several outlets and social media.

Dozens of recruits, primarily from the 2023 and 2024 classes, visited Ohio State over the weekend for the Buckeyes’ spring game. The exact number wasn’t clear as of Sunday afternoon, with reports prior to the game varying from more than 30 (per Cleveland.com) to at least 50 (Eleven Warriors).

Regardless of unclarity over the exact number, the weekend paid immediate dividends and even secured a recruit before Easter even concluded. Four-star cornerback Dijon Johnson announced on Sunday that he has committed to Ohio State.

“I have always thought that could be the pick for me,” he said to 247Sports. “It just wasn’t an in the moment thing. It was always like my top school with it being my dream school.”

Johnson is ranked the No. 29 cornerback and No. 265 player in the country. The 6-foot-1 Wharton (Tampa, Fla.) CB chose Ohio State over 35 other offers, according to 247Sports.

5-star, one of nation’s top QBs recaps Clemson visit

Clemson played host to a couple of big-time quarterback prospects this week, including Chandler (AZ.) five-star Dylan Raiola.

The Clemson Insider first detailed Clemson’s interest in Raiola back in October when he was still at Burleson High School (Texas), playing under former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna.

Now, he was finally able to make his return visit to campus on Wednesday and took in Clemson’s first padded scrimmage of the spring.

“Once I got there, Coach (Brandon) Streeter greeted me,” Raiola said. “I’ve been in communication with him over the phone and I know he came out to visit with my head coach. It was just really good to see him in person and just be around the whole Clemson staff. You can definitely feel the love right when you got there and just what they’re about.

“They’re about a faith-based program with Coach (Dabo) Swinney. I got to talk to Coach Swinney a little bit after practice on Wednesday. I got to spend some time with Coach Swinney and it was a great time. He told us about his program and the culture he’s built. It’s built faith-based and he wants guys to graduate. He wants to leave his players with good tools for life and win a championship. It’s in that specific order for a reason and, obviously, their track record shows they can win championships, especially against SEC programs like the Alabamas and Georgias. It was really good to just be around it and experience it with my whole family.”

Raiola had a chance to watch Clemson’s practice and got a good feel for the quarterback’s room and how the Tigers operate offensively under the direction of Streeter.

“Before practice, I got to sit in meetings,” he said. “I met D.J. (Uiagalelei), I met Cade (Klubnik). They’re great guys, first of all. The first thing I noticed is that they’re great people. They introduced themselves to me and made me feel welcome right away. That’s obviously really important to me. Then, they got into the practice portion of things, they’re gonna push the ball down the field, they’re gonna throw the ball down the field. That was very encouraging to see, that they’re gonna cut it loose and let the quarterbacks throw the ball down the field.”

This was Raiola’s first chance to see Streeter run the show as Clemson’s offensive coordinator.

“They looked really good and just to see Coach Streeter coach the drills they do, it’s very detailed and very thought out,” he said. “It’s just not all thrown together.”

This wasn’t his first time in front of Streeter, though.

“Actually, I went out last summer and threw for them,” Raiola said. “They were very impressed. They said that I’m the top guy on their board. They followed me throughout the season and watched all my film and they loved it. They said that I have a great family. They love my family, which is important to me. I’m a big family-first guy like I said previously. I think it was good to just go up there. I wasn’t going up there expecting an offer. I know they do things a little differently, which I totally respect. That’s why they get the people get and they do their background checks on everybody. It’s a very thought-out process.”

Clemson did mention to Raiola about getting back to campus this summer, which could culminate in the big-time quarterback prospect earning an offer from the Tigers.

What would it mean for him to ultimately pick up that offer from Clemson?

“I think it means a lot,” he said. “Any offer really from anywhere, whether it’s FBS, Power Five. Any offer I get is a blessing because I’m getting the opportunity to play the game that I love and God’s given me all the abilities and talents to play this game. So, especially from Clemson, it’d mean a lot because of the process and the way they do things. They go through the background check and they do all their research going into that. It would mean a lot to get an offer from Clemson and Clemson’s a great program.”

Raiola loves talking with Streeter on the phone, but he also acknowledged that meeting Clemson’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach in person does him far more justice.

“They’re just very genuine people, which you can tell through their actions and the way they express themselves,” Raiola said. “You can tell that they do everything right. I could tell over the phone and going to practice, seeing the way they do things, every single little detail matters. It’s just very impressive to see and that’s why they win a lot of games.”

With previously mentioning just how important family was to him, he also acknowledged just how much Clemson’s family atmosphere stood out to him.

“It definitely did,” he said. “The part of graduating college that’s a big deal because a lot of people want to get to college, graduate in three years and go to the NFL. That degree is what’s gonna take you your whole life because football’s short-lived. Coach Swinney, he’s a very family-oriented guy. All the coaches are allowed to bring their families around, which I think is very awesome to me personally.

“Some programs don’t let their families come around and while it doesn’t make me wonder, it makes me ask why they don’t let them come around? I think college is meant to be fun and it shouldn’t be run as a business. I just think with family being around it gives you that family feel. All the coaches’ wives were talking to my mom. That means a lot to me just to see my mom happy and my whole family happy.”

4-star quarterback gets a visit from Streeter

A Clemson assistant coach made a stop in The Lone Star State on Wednesday as the Tigers have spent their week hitting the recruiting trail.

The Clemson Insider confirmed that quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter paid a visit to Burleson High School in Texas to meet with the school’s coaches regarding Dylan Raiola.

The four-star quarterback in the class of 2024 is the son of former Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola, who played 14 years in the NFL

Streeter had a chance to meet with Dominic and longtime Lions and Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Jon Kitna, who is Dylan’s head coach at Burleson.

Even though Streeter wasn’t able to speak with Dylan directly due to NCAA rules, it still means a lot to the talented, young quarterback.

“For him to take time to come all the way out from Clemson to come to see my head coach and talk with my head coach,” Dylan said, “it definitely means a lot and it shows that I’m important to them. It’s exciting.”

Dylan is looking forward to continuing to strengthen his relationship with Clemson’s quarterbacks coach.

“He’s a great guy,” he said regarding his relationship with Streeter. “We learn something new about each other every time we talk. I look forward to talking with him every time we talk.”

Lone Star State QB has ‘special’ relationship with Streeter

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a talented gunslinger in the class of 2024, who’s been in contact with the staff and also keeping tabs on Clemson this season.

Burleson’s (TX.) four-star quarterback Dylan Raiola was able to catch bits and pieces of Clemson’s 30-24 win over Louisville on Saturday, Nov. 6.

“I got to catch some glimpses of,” Raiola said of Clemson’s second road win of the season. “It’s just really awesome to just see just the passion Coach Swinney coaches with and the passion his players play with. Their season isn’t going as everyone thinks it would go, but they’re a resilient bunch and you can tell that the culture has been built there and established. When you go to Clemson, you know what it takes and you’re held to the standard, which is awesome to just see.”

As mentioned before, Raiola has been keeping in consistent contact with Clemson quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter. They talk with each other every other week.

“It’s been great to just keep building that relationship,” he said. “I’m excited to see what happens in the near future. I think [our relationship] is special. When we get on the phone, we hardly talk about football. We talk about family, school and just how to be a better person in general. I have a lot of respect for Coach Streeter in doing that.

“We need better men and better people like coaches trying to recruit people that they act a certain way. If you act a certain way and Clemson happens to be the place, everything’s going to work out, not only for being at Clemson, just for the rest of your life.”

At the time of his conversation with TCI, Raiola hadn’t yet spoken with Streeter during that particular week, but he pulled back the curtain on what he’s been hearing from Clemson throughout the recruitment process.

“They’re gonna put their best foot forward and they’re gonna make their best effort and they’re gonna recruit the heck out of me,” Raiola added. “I’m just excited and blessed that a school like that thinks of me as highly as Clemson does. I’ll never take that for granted and it’s a blessing.”

Raiola comes across as very humble and that’s exactly what he is. He stays true to that persona and gratitude and gratefulness towards being a top-50 recruit in the country is noticeable over the phone.

He’s always willing to talk about his recruitment, but he’s not one to boast over his big offers. Even if he’d have every right to do so. The sophomore signal-caller has recently picked up offers from Texas A&M, Notre Dame and the University of Arizona, adding to an extensive list, which includes schools like Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Texas.

“It means a lot,” he said. “It’s definitely something I’m proud of. I don’t really talk to people too much outside of my family and my teammates about it, just because we’re in the playoffs now and I don’t want it to be anything about me. I want it to be all about my team. They’ve put the work in.”

That’s humble.

While he doesn’t have a Clemson offer just yet, he’s working his way towards one. Raiola has spoken with Streeter about making it up to Tiger Town, but as of now, that seems more feasible after the season and likely during the spring.

“We’ll for sure get back up there again and I look forward to it,” Raiola said.

He ranks as the No. 3 quarterback and No. 45 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports.

Clemson continues to keep tabs on quarterbacks in the 2024 class.

One of the best sophomore gunslingers in the nation is the son of a former NFL player. His last name might sound a bit familiar, too.

The Clemson Insider checked in with Burleson (Texas) four-star quarterback Dylan Raiola, the son of former Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola, who played 14 years in the NFL.

“I’ve been in touch with Coach (Brandon) Streeter, the quarterbacks coach down there,” Raiola told TCI. “Love him, great guy. Love the program at Clemson. Coach Swinney’s doing awesome things down there and just the culture that he’s built down there and established is like no other school. So, I’m just excited to keep building that relationship with everybody down there.”

The two are already formulating a strong connection.

“I think we have a great feel for each other,” Raiola said. “We’re still building our relationship and I have a feeling it’s gonna be like that for the whole recruiting process. Every time I talk to him, we learn something new about each other, which is awesome. I’m glad I can talk to such an awesome guy like him.”

Raiola can’t answer at the moment whether he’ll be able to make it up to Death Valley for a game this season.

“If I get a free weekend, I will for sure try and get down to Clemson,” he said.

Raiola has been able to take a few gameday visits.

He was in attendance for Clemson’s season-opening matchup against Georgia in Charlotte. Raiola was there as a guest of Georgia, but leading up to the game, he talked with Streeter during the week.

“Before I got in contact with Coach Streeter, I got tickets to the game,” Raiola said. “I was just super excited to watch both teams play. It was crazy. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I took the full opportunity. I got there early, I got to see Coach Swinney — not talk to him, but I got to see him from the stands walking the field — and their whole pregame routine. I just loved how they do everything in sync and it’s organized.”

Raiola doesn’t take it lightly that he’s being recruited by a program like Clemson.

“That means a lot,” he said. “I think the part that means the most to me is just the people that surround that building and the people that make that program, which makes it a special program and all of that just translates to football. It’s an awesome school. Their culture is obviously established and you can see that while watching them play.”

He also doesn’t take it lightly that he gets to learn from two NFL veterans every day, his father and longtime Lions and Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Jon Kitna, who is his head coach at Burleson.

“It’s awesome. I’m very fortunate,” Raiola said. “I get to every single day, come in and just learn from Coach Kitna and just see what Coach Kitna’s doing in kid’s lives on the football team. A lot of people would pay to be trained by a guy like him. I love to take advantage of it because I get it for free. He’s just a great guy.

“Shoot, my dad being in the house with me is awesome. My dad coaches the offensive line at my high school. So, me and my dad, we’re constantly talking football. We just love the game.”

What’s the most important thing that Raiola has learned about being a quarterback from Kitna?

“Something that stands out is that you can use your eyes as a weapon,” he said. “Your body language controls a lot of how you play. Just the tempo you practice at will translate to the game. So, Coach Kitna, what he does at practice is he makes it over-speed, so when we get to the game, everything slows down for us and we can see things clearly. I think that’s a huge benefit with his experience and his knowledge on that.”

And from his father?

“My dad’s always taught me to work in silence,” Raiola added. “I’m gonna keep working in silence, let my play do the talking. I don’t like to talk about myself, that’s just not the type of person I am. That’s what my dad has taught me.”

Growing up in an NFL locker room sure has its benefits. There are not many other high schoolers around the country, who can say that they have relationships with both Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson.

But that’s Raiola. And, he’s certainly humble about it.

“I was actually old enough to be around my dad when he was playing,” he said. “Just to be in the locker room with all those NFL guys, to mention a few, my dad was super close with Stafford and Stafford was awesome with me and my brother. Calvin Johnson was another guy. Those guys have just had a big impact on my life because we stay in touch with them a little bit now. We actually got to make the trip to Calvin’s Hall of Fame speech and induction. That was super special.”

Circling back to his recruitment, in addition to Clemson, Raiola mentioned Oklahoma, Texas, Florida State, West Virginia, Georgia and all the programs that have offered him, as the schools currently standing out in his recruitment.

Raiola is a pro-style quarterback and he tries to predicate his game as such. There’s a certain NFL MVP that he tries to emulate in his play.

“I humbly say this, but I consider myself sort of like Patrick Mahomes,” he said. “I know I can make all the off-platform throws. I’m accurate. Really just a great teammate and a great leader, which comes first and that just trickles down to everything football-wise. Patrick Mahomes, I look up to him. I watch him every Sunday and just learn from watching him every week.”

Raiola ranks as the No. 3 quarterback and No. 45 overall prospect nationally in the 2024 class, per 247Sports.
