Who is the favorite to land four-star Dylan Gooden?

The projections are looking good for Rutgers and four-star Dylan Gooden.

Dylan Gooden, a four-star edge, is set to make his college decision on Aug. 9. And a pair of Big Ten programs are in the lead for one of the top players in Maryland for this recruiting cycle.

Ranked the No. 243 player in the nation according to the On3 Consensus, Gooden is an edge rusher with tremendous length. He is a standout for Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, MD).

Gooden announced a final four of Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers and Virginia Tech.

Rutgers is the leader here according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. The Scarlet Knights have a 32.8 percent chance of landing Gooden.

Penn State is second at 19.4 percent. West Virginia is at 16.7 percent and in-state Maryland checks in at 7.3 percent.

If the predictions hold up, it would be a huge recruiting win for Rutgers to land a talent like Gooden. He is a consensus four-star and ranked as one of the top players in Maryland in what is a rather deep year for the state.

The class of 2023 talent is the son of former MLB pitcher Doc Gooden. Over the weekend, Doc said that his son’s decision is going to be a “good surprise.”

Freeman visits Maryland High School that has been kind to Notre Dame

Could two more Good Counsel players be headed to South Bend?

Although Maryland isn’t known across the country for having a large contingent to football players to matriculate to play at the Power-5 level, but that doesn’t mean the state doesn’t have solid football. The Irish have still recently found two players from the state to make contributions in South Bend.

Most notably defensive back Cam Hart, who played a huge role his past fall and Davis Sherwood who just completed his first season playing for the Irish. Today, new head coach Marcus Freeman visited Our Lady of Good Counsel High School and the question is, who is on his radar.

If I had to guess, it isn’t a 2022 prospect but 2023 defensive end’s Dylan Gooden and Neeo Avery. Currently, both prospectus hold Irish offer’s so there is a very good chance Freeman was there to see them. Due to NCAA recruiting rules, he was not able to speak to them, but visiting the school is more than enough to show to Avery and Gooden that they are wanted in Blue and Gold.

Dylan Gooden, Doc Gooden’s son, emerging as elite 2023 football recruit

Dylan Gooden, the son of former MLB All-Star pitcher Doc Gooden, is developing into a force on the gridiron.

When former Major League Baseball Pitcher Doc Gooden was a teenager, he made a habit of dominating hitters on a regular basis, winning 17 games as a member of the New York Mets and appearing in the 1984 MLB All-Star at just 19-years-old.

Now, his son, Dylan, is also starting to dominate at a young age. Instead of toeing the rubber and striking people out with ease, Gooden is wreaking havoc as a pass rusher at Our Lady Good Counsel High School in Maryland.

Gooden, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound defensive end, broke into 247Sports’ latest class of 2023 Top247 rankings on Wednesday afternoon, checking in No. 143 in his class. Gooden started his sophomore year at Our Lady Good Counsel as a wide receiver, but made the switch over to defense midway through the season and instantly reaped the benefits. Gooden notched four sacks in just two games, with one of those matchups coming against national powerhouse St. Frances Academy.

“The coaches wanted him on defense,” Dwight Gooden said in an interview with 247Sports’ Brian Dohn. “I told him, ‘I think defensive end is probably your thing.’ He said, ‘Yeah, but I want to play wide receiver.’ I told him, ‘Good, and I am not telling you not to, but I don’t want you to cheat yourself.’

“If the coaches at Good Counsel see you that way, if the coaches who recruited you (into high school) see you that way, get better at it. Play wide receiver as well, but learn the defense because the higher up you go, the tougher it gets.”

The younger Gooden’s newfound stardom as a pass rusher has garnered the attention of college football coaching staffs across the nation. Arizona, Boston College, Kentucky, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas A&M and West Virginia have already offered Gooden and that list figures to only grow as he continues to familiarize himself with his new position.

“It’s exciting,” Dylan Gooden said. “I’m blessed. They came out of nowhere because I wasn’t expecting it. I only played two games. It all happened so fast.”
