Jayden Daniels wins Corbett Award as top male amateur athlete in Louisiana

Former LSU star Jayden Daniels took home the Corbett Award, given to the best amateur athlete in Louisiana.

Eight months have passed since [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] suited up for LSU football, but the accolades from his prolific 2023 campaign continue to roll in. Shortly after earning SEC Male Athlete of the Year, Daniels was named the Corbett Award Winner, a trophy annually awarded by the Sugar Bowl to the top amateur athlete in the state of Louisiana.

Daniels is the first LSU football player to win the award since [autotag]Joe Burrow[/autotag] in 2019. He follows in the footsteps of former LSU baseball star [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag], who took home the award last year.

He joins a long list of Louisiana greats, including [autotag]Pete Maravich[/autotag] and [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag], who won the award twice while she played for Louisiana Tech.

The award is named for James J. Corbett, a former LSU athletic director.

It comes as no surprise after Daniels lit up the stat sheet en route to a Heisman in 2023, throwing for 3,812 yards and running for 1,134 more.

Daniels went on to be the second overall pick in the NFL draft as the Washington Commanders put their faith in the former LSU star to turn around an offense that’s struggled for a few years now.

LSU’s Jayden Daniels named SEC Male Athlete of the Year

LSU has now won the award in back-to-back years after it went to Dylan Crews in 2023.

Former LSU quarterback [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] has moved on to the NFL after he was drafted with the second overall pick by the Washington Commanders. But Daniels is still racking up the collegiate accolades, and on Tuesday, he was named the SEC Male Athlete of the Year.

Daniels becomes the second LSU player in a row to win the award after baseball star [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] won it last year. He becomes the seventh LSU athlete to win the award and is joined by Florida distance runner Palker Valby, who was named SEC Female Athlete of the Year.

“The SEC is pleased to honor Parker and Jayden as this year’s Roy F. Kramer Athletes of the Year,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a release. “It takes an exceptional level of discipline and commitment to achieve at highest level of competition, a level that has been reached by Parker and Jayden with the consistency necessary to be called the best of the best. These young people are great examples of what it means to be a student-athlete in the Southeastern Conference.”

Daniels was a dominant player in his fifth and final season of college football in 2023, winning the Heisman Trophy as he led the nation in most quarterback stats. He was a consensus All-American and won the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Year, Associated Press Player of the Year and Sporting News Player of the Year awards.

He also won the Davey O’Brien, Manning and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm awards.

Daniels had a special two years at LSU after transferring from Arizona State, particularly his final campaign. He turned in one of the best SEC quarterback seasons we’ve ever seen, and he’s been honored accordingly.

Former LSU baseball standout Dylan Crews secures spot in All-Star Futures Game

Dylan Crews has earned a spot on the National League roster for the All-Star Futures Game.

[autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] is not the only former Tiger making waves in the minor leagues. [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] has earned a spot on the National League roster for the [autotag]All-Star Futures Game.[/autotag]

Last month, Crews was called up from the Washington Nationals Double-A affiliate the Harrisburg Senators to the Nationals Triple-A affiliate the Rochester Red Wings. Since joining the Red Wings on June 18, Crews has a .259 batting average with three doubles, two homers and seven RBI. He has only appeared in 12 games so his average will fluctuate a lot early on. He had a .283 batting average until he went 0-for-5 in his game on July 1.

Crews will play one of the outfield positions for the National League in the Futures Game in Arlington, Texas. He will be joined by his Nationals teammate James Wood.

Crews was just called up to Trile-A but if he keeps performing at a high level, we could see him playing for the Washington Nationals soon.

Former LSU outfielder Paxton Kling reveals transfer destination

The sophomore from Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania, is heading back home.

Former LSU outfielder [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] recently announced his transfer destination. The sophomore from Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania, is heading back home as Kling has committed to playing for Penn State.

The Nittany Lions finished the 2024 season with a 29-24 record and went 12-12 in conference play. Despite their mediocre record and the struggles they faced this season, Penn State made some noise in the Big 10 conference tournament. They beat Illinois and then beat Michigan twice to advance to the conference championship game against Nebraska. Unfortunately, they came up short as they lost 2-1.

Kling was a recruit who arrived in Baton Rouge with a lot of hype surrounding him. People thought he could be the next [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag]. Defensively, I would say he was at that level. He is one of the best defensive center fielders in college baseball. The issue he had was slumping from the batter’s box.

Kling finished the 2024 season with a .222 batting average. That was a big drop from his .289 batting average in 2023. His slugging percentage dropped from .522 to .317 as well.

I still think he has the talent to be a star player. Baseball can be a cruel game at times. I hope he shines next season at Penn State.

LSU’s Tommy White heads to Blue Jays in latest MLB mock draft

Tommy White is a projected top 20 pick in MLB.com’s latest mock draft.

The MLB draft is just around the corner with the first round set to begin on July 14. It’s typically a busy time for a handful of LSU baseball players along with commits as they wait to hear their name called. For some, that comes with a choice: turn pro or play for LSU in 2025.

Two names expected to turn pro and be first-round picks are LSU third baseman [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and commit [autotag]Konnor Griffin[/autotag].

In the latest MLB.com mock draft, the Blue Jays select White with the No. 20 overall pick.

“Huge combine the first year, really hit the ball hard, and he’s continued to do so in three years in college at NC State and LSU. He wound up hitting 75 home runs in three seasons,” MLB.com’s Jim Callis wrote.

White is MLB.com’s No. 15 draft prospect. His scouting report says White is known for his power, but he also possesses and underrated ability to make consistent contact.

The same mock draft slotted Griffin No. 10 overall, joining former LSU baseball player [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] in the Nationals organization.

“In terms of his ceiling, I think he’s got the highest ceiling in the draft.” Callis wrote, “You’re talking about a potential 30-30 guy who could be a plus defender at shortstop or a Gold Glove center fielder.”

Despite his commitment to LSU, Griffin’s projected draft slot likely takes college out of the picture. It’s rare for a player of his caliber to arrive on campus, but LSU fans will hold out hope until it’s official.

Watch Dylan Crews go yard for first hit at Triple-A level

Dylan Crews’ first hit at the Triple-A level was certainly an impressive one.

Former LSU star and second overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hasn’t been at Triple-A long, but he’s making his mark.

After a rough start to the season in Double-A, Crews has been red hot recently and earned a call-up from the Washington Nationals to the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings earlier this week.

The Triple-A level has presented a learning curve for Crews, who has just one base hit in his first 10 at-bats. That one hit was an impressive one, though, as he took one out of the park with a home run in Wednesday night’s game for Rochester.

Crews was a big part of LSU’s national title team in 2023, and now he’s just one step away from making his major league debut with the Nationals.

Nationals call former LSU baseball star Dylan Crews up to Triple-A

Dylan Crews received the news that he is now one step closer to making his major league debut.

Former LSU star outfielder [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] received the news that he is now one step closer to making his major league debut as he has been called up to the Washington Nationals Triple-A squad.

Crews started his season with the Nationals Double-A affiliate the [autotag]Harrisburg Senators[/autotag]. He has appeared in 51 games for Harrisburg and has a .274 batting average with 11 doubles, three triples, five homers, and 38 RBI. Crews is hitting 15-for-53 (.283) in June and he is on a five-game hitting streak.

Crews was the No. 2 pick in the 2023 MLB draft. He was taken one pick after his teammate [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates to open the draft. Those two players helped LSU reach the mountaintop and win a National Championship for the Tigers.

The [autotag]Rochester Red Wings[/autotag] are the AAA affiliate of the Washington Nationals and they are currently 36-31 this season and have the third-best record in the International League East.

Jay Johnson discusses LSU baseball’s upcoming draft decisions

LSU would get a big boost if players like Jared Jones and Griffin Herring elect to return.

Per usual, LSU baseball expects to have more than a few of its players selected when the MLB draft rolls around this summer.

Last year, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] were the first and second overall picks. That high in the draft, the choice to go pro is easy. But as you get into the later rounds, players are faced with a choice — head to the minor leagues or come back to school.

“We’ll have as few as five and as many as 11, probably, that could get drafted from this roster,” [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] told the media, “I would guess the time the 2024 draft ends, we’ll have the most players drafted in the country over the last two years. We’re here to develop guys for professional baseball and no one does that better.”

LSU’s top three prospects are [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag], [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] and [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag]. It would be a major surprise if any of those three returned to campus, but there are other names worth keeping an eye on.

[autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] is a draft eligible sophomore whose power tool is sure to grab the attention of some MLB organizations. According to MLB.com, Jones is the No. 119 ranked prospect in the draft.

There’s also pitcher [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag], who ranks No. 156 on the MLB.com draft board.

Herring excelled for LSU as a reliever in 2024, but Johnson said Herring would have a spot in next year’s weekend rotation.

Jones and Herring will have their chance to turn pro, but Johnson suggests you shouldn’t rule out a return for them and LSU’s other prospects.

“None of them are in a hurry to get out of here and I think they know their value here is strong,” Johnson said.

If key players return, along with LSU’s additions in the transfer portal, expect the Tigers to be back in contention for a trip to Omaha in 2025.

LSU baseball outfielder Paxton Kling enters the transfer portal

After a promising true freshman season turned into a disappointing sophomore campaign, Paxton Kling is moving on.

Coming out of high school, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] was one of the most sought-after recruits in the 2022 recruiting class. He was ranked as the No. 6 overall player in the class by Perfect Game and the No. 2 player from Pennsylvania.

People thought he may be the next [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag]. Unfortunately, things didn’t pan out for Kling in the Bayou, and on Tuesday, he entered the transfer portal.

It isn’t because of his ability defensively. Kling was one of the most impressive outfielders in the NCAA when it came to making web gems in the outfield. The issue was his production at the plate.

It was not as bad last season when he finished with a respectable .289 batting average in 57 games played. This season, his average dropped to .222. That is barely above the Mendoza line. His strikeouts jumped from 27 to 43 and his slugging percentage dropped from .522 to .317.

I hate that things did not work out for Paxton in Baton Rouge and I hope he can excel wherever he ends up.
