Bears TE Robert Tonyan now questionable for Sunday’s game vs. Packers

The Bears added Tonyan to the injury report with a back issue and announced a few roster moves ahead of Sunday’s game.

The Chicago Bears were set to enter their Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers with essentially a healthy roster, but now they could be without one of their tight ends. On Saturday, the Bears added Robert Tonyan to the injury report with a back issue, and he is now questionable to play. He practiced in full all week and had no injury designation up to this point.

Tonyan was signed as a free agent this offseason after spending six years with the Packers. He was set to face his former team for the first time, but that is now in jeopardy. His status for the game will be announced no later than 90 minutes prior to kickoff.

With Tonyan landing on the injury report, the Bears elevated tight end Stephen Carlson, as well as linebacker DeMarquis Gates, from the practice squad. They also released linebacker Dylan Cole, who was the lone player with an injury designation on Friday.

Carlson saw the most action of any Bears tight end this preseason but hasn’t played in a regular-season game since 2020 due to injuries. Gates, meanwhile, played in three games for the Bears last season, totaling one tackle.

One thing to love about each of the Bears’ free agent additions

From Tremaine Edmunds’ youth to Andrew Billings’ technique, here’s one thing to love about each of the Bears’ 2023 free agent signings.

The Chicago Bears have added 11 significant additions to their team in free agency this offseason. Chicago had the most cap space in the NFL to spend, and general manager Ryan Poles made good on that, using that money to start to fill holes with young talent.

Key additions in Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards will help fix the holes created at linebacker when the Bears traded away Roquan Smith last season.

Whether it’s a new starter or a depth player, these 11 additions all bring something exciting to the 2023 roster. Here’s one thing to love about each of the Bears’ free-agent additions.

2023 Bears free agency: Contract details for new players

Here’s a look at the basic contracts for the Bears’ new additions through the first wave of free agency.

The first couple of weeks of free agency are in the books, and the Chicago Bears have added a handful of new players to the roster.

While Bears general manager Ryan Poles invested a lot into the linebacker position, he also negotiated some bargain contracts for starters and depth pieces.

Still, the Bears are sitting in a great position with the salary cap. They still have around $38 million in available cap space — most in the league — to make additional moves in the later waves of free agency and for the upcoming rookie draft class.

Here’s a look at the basic contracts for the Bears’ new additions during the first wave of free agency:

Note: New details will be added as they become available.

Grading the Bears’ signing of LB Dylan Cole

The addition of Dylan Cole should give the Bears another steady special teams contributor. Here’s our initial grade of the move.

The second wave of free agency is coming to a close, but the Chicago Bears still made one more move before the week ended. They agreed to a one-year deal with former Tennessee Titans linebacker Dylan Cole on Thursday, adding yet another player to a revamped position group while stabilizing their special teams.

Cole came into the league in 2017 as an undrafted free agent with the Houston Texans and primarily played a role on special teams. He spent four seasons with them before joining the Titans in 2021 in a similar capacity. But last season, Cole saw the most playing time of his career. He played in 43% of the team’s snaps on defense and had 64 total tackles, including four for a loss, and one sack.

Now with the Bears, Cole joins a group of linebackers led by Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, and Jack Sanborn. He could see some time on defense, but his primary role will be on special teams. Here’s our initial grade of the move.

What the Bears are getting in new LB Dylan Cole

We spoke to Mike Moraitis of Titans Wire to give us a rundown on what we can expect from new Bears LB Dylan Cole.

The Chicago Bears have signed former Tennessee Titans linebacker Dylan Cole to a one-year deal.

Cole has been an impact special teams contributor through the first six seasons of his career, where his 91.2 PFF special teams grade over the past two seasons is the highest among all linebackers, per Brad Spielberger. Cole figures to fill the void left by former Bear Matt Adams, who departed in free agency.

Twitter reacts to Bears signing LB Dylan Cole

The Bears are signing LB Dylan Cole. As you can imagine, there have been plenty of jokes about Chicago signing all of the LBs and Titans.

It’s been a quiet few days for the Chicago Bears on the free agency front after a busy first week. Now, general manager Ryan Poles is making some depth moves, starting with the addition of former Tennessee Titan Dylan Cole.

Cole has served mainly as a special teams contributor and depth at linebacker during his first six seasons with the Houston Texans and Titans. He’s played in 61 games, including nine starts, where he recorded 147 total tackles, two sacks, two interceptions and one forced fumble in his career.

Last season with Tennessee, Cole started in eight games at linebacker, where he totaled a career-high 64 tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack.

Coles serves as the likely replacement for the departed Matt Adams, who was a key special teamer and provided depth at all three linebacker spots.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of jokes about how the Bears seem to be loading up on linebackers this offseason, after they signed Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards, and how they’re signing yet another former Titan.

Here’s how Twitter is reacting to the move:

Former Titans LB Dylan Cole signing with Bears

Former Titans LB Dylan Cole is reportedly signing with the Bears.

Former Tennessee Titans linebacker and special teams ace Dylan Cole will reportedly be switching addresses in 2023.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chicago Bears are set to sign Cole, who was brought in for a visit on Wednesday, according to the league’s transactions wire. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cole is now the third former Titan to leave for the Windy City this offseason, with Chicago signing both right guard Nate Davis and defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker, also.

Cole was a very good special teamer for the Titans. The speed at which he played was fun to watch, and he was good for a big hit on what seemed like a weekly basis.

The problem for Cole was that he was pushed into a bigger role on defense in 2022, where he was exposed. Still, there’s no denying that the 28-year-old gave it everything he had and was a positive addition for the Titans when serving in the role he was originally meant for.

Titans free-agent LB Dylan Cole visits Bears

Titans free-agent LB Dylan Cole is receiving interest from the Bears.

UPDATE: Tennessee Titans free-agent linebacker Dylan Cole is reportedly signing with the Chicago Bears (READ MORE).

Tennessee Titans free-agent linebacker Dylan Cole is drawing interest from the Chicago Bears, a team that has already signed two free agents from Nashville.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the Bears hosted Cole on a free-agent visit on Wednesday. Chicago has previously signed former Titans defensive lineman DeMarcus Walker and right guard Nate Davis.

Originally signed by the Titans in November 2021, Cole appeared in 24 games (eight starts) over a season-plus.

He was an excellent special teams contributor who played fast and hit hard, but he got exposed when he was pushed into a bigger role on defense in because of injuries.

Tennessee appears to be moving on from Cole after the team inked fellow linebacker Luke Gifford, who figures to take on the same role as a special teams contributor and depth option on defense.

“I know that wherever I go, my role is going to be first to just dominate on special teams,” Gifford said, per Paul Kuharsky.

“And then really just do whatever I can to help the team. Hopefully, whether that’s a little bit of linebacker here and there or whatever they see for me is what I’ll do. So, I’m excited about it for sure.”

1 pending free agent Chargers should target: AFC South Edition

Listing one free agent from the Jaguars, Texans, Colts and Titans who could be a fit for the Chargers.

The Chargers won’t be as aggressive as they have been in recent years when it comes to signing free agents.

While they’re cash-strapped, general manager Tom Telesco will likely make some moves to have some spendings available to them so they can sign some low-cost players.

That said, I will list one pending free agent from each team in the NFL that could be a realistic target for L.A.

Next up is the AFC South.
