As Clemson tries to come to grips with the departure of Brent Venables they still have some uncertainty on the horizon.  Will Tony Elliott follow Venables out the door?  Will Dan Radakovich move on to Miami for the same position?

We wanted to pass along the latest based on the information we gathered late Sunday night.

We can tell you that after talking with several sources in the Clemson athletic department late Sunday that they had not been notified by Radakovich about any decisions regarding the opening at Miami.  Conversations continued over the weekend between Radakovich and Miami.

Coach Elliott is high on the candidate list for both Virginia and Duke.  Representatives from Duke traveled Sunday to meet with Elliott in the Upstate.  Current Penn State co-defensive coordinator and former Virginia player Anthony Poindexter is expected to interview for the Virginia job in Las Vegas according to multiple reports.

As of Monday morning we believe Elliott to Duke is more likely than Elliott to Virginia but he is very much in play with both schools.

As we reported Sunday we confirmed that Clemson plans to spend whatever is necessary to find the best replacements for coach Venables and coach Elliott if needed.

The timing of Venables departure Sunday night and the possibility of Elliott also leaving is not great.  Coach Swinney was in Las Vegas Sunday to watch his former Tigers and has plans to stay until Tuesday for C.J. Spillers Hall of Fame ceremony.  He is also expected to be on the recruiting trail this week for the Tigers.  We spoke with a source in the athletic department Sunday night and they were not aware of any plans for Swinney to return to Clemson sooner.

Swinney and his staff will have to do what they can to make sure no Clemson commits decide to reconsider their decisions after the departure of Venables.  In today’s world of the transfer portal he will also have to do the same with the current players.

Rising Clemson star Trenton Simpson changes his Twitter information Sunday after the news of Venables departure broke.

Swinney’s culture has been a key ingredient to Clemson’s success the past decade.  This week the culture will get one of its biggest tests.

Miami vs Duke Game Preview

Why Miami Will Win

Now’s the time for the offense to have some fun.

The Hurricanes scratched and clawed their way through the season, and now they’re bowl eligible after the win in the bad weather against Virginia Tech. Game after game after game has been tough.

Duke shouldn’t be anything more than a chance to put up some big numbers.

The Blue Devil defense is the second-worst in college football, allowing 517 yards per game on the year – and it’s getting worse.

Virginia, Wake Forest, Pitt, Virginia Tech, and Louisville all came up with 500 yards or more. Wake Forest and Louisville were coming close to 700, and Pitt easily came up with 600.

There’s not enough pressure in the backfield, the pass defense gives up too many yards in chunks, and the run D is getting hammered game after game, allowing 220 yards or more in each of the last four.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Duke Will Win

Yeah, the Duke defense has been miserable and can’t seem to come up with any one thing it does all that well, but it also went against a whole lot of amazing offenses.

It wasn’t totally awful in the loss to Georgia Tech, it held Northwestern down for about 45 minutes, and Miami doesn’t run well enough – it hasn’t hit 100 yards in four of the last five games – to matter.

It’s the final game of the year, it’s Senior Day, and it’s a chance to come up with something positive after losing every game since late September.

Miami turns the ball over way too much, the offensive line hasn’t been all that great, and the secondary can be roasted, but …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Duke’s hot start won’t be enough.

The Blue Devils will be inspired, and they’ll come out with a few good scoring drives, but Miami will settle in.

By the middle of the second quarter this will completely flip, the Hurricane passing game will take over, and it’ll be another day when the Duke D allows more than 500 yards.

Louisville vs Duke Game Preview

Why Louisville Will Win

It’s been a strange and tough run for a Louisville team trying to get bowl eligible, but this is when the offense has to take off.

Duke’s offense has been spotty, but it’s the defensive side that’s the true disaster, especially against anyone who can throw.

Louisville QB Malik Cunningham is coming off this best game of the year in the team’s best performance of the season. He hit 73% of his passes with four scores in the 41-3 win over Syracuse, and now he goes against the nation’s second-worst pass defense.

The Blue Devils are giving up over 300 passing yards per game, and Louisville should come close. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Duke Will Win

Louisville’s defense has improved, but it’s about to get run on.

Duke’s ground game hasn’t been able to keep the production going after a great first half of the season, but the offense pushed for close to 200 yards in last week’s loss to Virginia Tech.

The offense is trying to find something that works for the passing game, getting freshman Riley Leonard some meaningful work – he can run a little bit. Louisville’s secondary is just leaky enough to give up over 200 yards. Duke has the parts, they just have to work.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Duke’s offensive parts aren’t working because the lines aren’t getting the job done.

Louisville will get up fast, it’ll turn to the offensive line to take over – the Cardinal front five is good in pass protection – and it’ll be on cruise control in the fourth quarter.

Duke vs Virginia Tech Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The offense is still okay.

It might have problems scoring, but the O is moving just enough to at least get to more than 300 yards per game without too much of a problem. In this, it’s all about cranking things up against a Virginia Tech team that’s having big-time issues all the way around.

The Hokies have lost four of their last five games thanks to a painfully inconsistent offense, an absent passing game, and without enough timely plays from the defense to make up for the other problems.

However, if you think the Virginia Tech defense has been a tad off …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Virginia Will Win

Duke’s defense has completely fallen off the map.

It struggled throughout the first part of the year, but the offense was able to make up for it with a whole lot of pop from the running game. And then came the teams that could throw.

Granted, everyone’s having problems with Wake Forest, Pitt, and Virginia, but all three took target practice against the Blue Devils, combining for well over 1,800 yards in the last three games.

Virginia Tech might be coming off a miserable 17-3 loss to Boston College, and the passing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards in four of the last five games, but the running game has shown enough to work from time to time.

This is the game for the O to have some fun.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The Hokies have improved their defense just a bit over the last few games, and that shouldn’t be the issue this week.

Can they finally show some offensive pop? Duke has the worst defense in the ACC, and the offense has scored seven points or fewer in three of the last five games.

If you’re getting shut out by Virginia and only come up with seven against Wake Forest and North Carolina, things aren’t going all that well. The Virginia Tech defense will take over.

Pitt vs Duke Game Preview

Why Pitt Will Win

The Pitt offense continues to be incredible.

It might have come up short against Miami last week, but Kenny Pickett raised his NFL stock even more by throwing for over 500 yards, the O showed balance against Virginia Tech a few weeks ago, and Duke can’t stop any of it.

On a four-game losing streak, the Blue Devils haven’t been remotely close defensively, allowing close to 2,100 yards in the four ACC games.

The pass defense is the worst in the ACC allowing 260 yards or more against everyone this season but North Carolina A&T.

As you’re reading this, Pickett already has 200 passing yards.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Duke Will Win

So what is Duke doing right?

The passing game should work. There’s a good ground attack when the offense doesn’t have to start throwing to keep up, and that’s going to be the case here, too.

How did Pitt lose to Miami? Hurricane QB Tyler Van Dyke went off for 426 passing yards with big play after big play. Gunnar Holmberg hasn’t been accurate enough lately, but he was great throughout the first part of the season, is connecting on close to 70% of his tries, and he’s got the big play arm to push the Pitt secondary from the start.

This has to be a fight-fire-with-fire thing.

And …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt doesn’t turn the ball over, but when it does, there’s a problem.

The two given away to UMass didn’t matter, but the three against Western Michigan led to a loss, and the two last week against Miami mattered. The Panthers turned it over just once in the other five games.

Duke has to be at least a +2 in turnover margin, but it only did that once this year and it still almost lost to Northwestern.

Pitt will get back on track.

Wake Forest vs Duke Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

Time to get the O going.

Duke doesn’t have enough on defense to hold up against the Wake Forest offensive machine, but it can run, it’s got enough of a passing game to bomb away, and it needs to keep up the pace.

The Demon Deacons might be fantastic, but they don’t control the clock and they don’t do much of anything against the run.

Army, Syracuse, and Louisville might all have special running games, but allowing close to 1,000 yards in three games is a whole lot.

The Wake Forest D has given up over 500 yards of total offense in each of the last four games, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Wake Forest Will Win

The team keeps on winning even with the porous defense.

On the flip side, Duke’s defense is last in the ACC in passing yards allowed, it’s last in the ACC in scoring and total defense, too.

You want to run on this group? Go ahead. You want to bomb away? Give it a shot.

The Wake Forest offense doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter, it’s got a great way of answering scores with its own good drive, and for all of the problems on defense, it gets into the backfield.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Wake Forest is too good at generating the big play at the key times to ever be out of this.

Don’t be shocked if Duke hangs around, though.

The clunker in the 48-0 loss to Virginia and 38-7 disaster to North Carolina were more of an outlier for this team. Wake Forest will pull away with a big burst in the second quarter and cruise, but Duke will peck away just enough to make the other side continue to try.

Duke vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Duke Will Win

The offense is working.

It’s got enough balance to be versatile on the fly, it’s keeping the chains moving, and it should be able to keep up with a Virginia team that loves to get into firefights. The Blue Devils struggled a bit against North Carolina, but they cranked up well over 400 yards in every other game so far.

On the flip side, Virginia has been strange. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall is usually great at putting together sure-tackling, rock-solid defenses, and this year’s version isn’t one of them.

The Cavaliers allowed 200 yards passing and 200 rushing in three of the last four games, the pass D is mediocre, the run D is far worse, and Duke should be able to take advantage of it.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

This passing game is a whole lot of fun.

Brennan Armstrong has the perfect name for what he does. He’s a tough bomber with a strong enough arm to keep pushing the attack through the problems of the defense – the Cavaliers have hit the 400-yard mark through the air in four of the last five games.

In this, though, the Cavaliers will try to balance things out a wee bit. The Duke run defense hasn’t been anything special, but the secondary has struggled every bit as much.

As long as Armstrong and the passing game can limit the mistakes – Duke can take the ball away – and not give the Blue Devil O easy scoring opportunities, the Cavs should be fine.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

There will be a whole lot of points with a whole lot of yards, because that’s what these two teams do.

Lots of O, little D, and with both sides coming up with enough momentum swings to make this interesting. However, Virginia has more pop to pull away as the game goes on. Too many Duke drives will fizzle out in Cavalier territory.

The Jets picked 2 players named Michael Carter in the NFL Draft, and football Twitter had jokes

The Jets are on a mission to draft all the Michael Carters this year.

If your name is Michael Carter, the New York Jets probably want to draft you, because Saturday during the later rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft, they picked up two ACC players who both happened to be named Michael Carter.

In the fourth round of the draft on Saturday, the Jets selected North Carolina running back Michael Carter with the 107th overall pick. And not long after that, with the 154th overall pick in the fifth round, they took Michael Carter II, a cornerback out of Duke.

The Tarheels’ Michael Carter was the team’s leading rusher last season with 1,245 yards, nine touchdowns and an average of 8.0 yards per carry. He had the fourth-most rushing yards in the country and was in a three-way tie for the fourth-best average per carry.

The Blue Devils’ Michael Carter II was one of two Duke players this year with two interceptions on the season, and he was credited with 41 total tackles, 26 of which were solo.

Once ACC Coastal rivals, the two Michael Carters are now teammates.

And, of course, football Twitter had plenty of (and some of the exact same, super obvious) jokes and funny reactions to the Jets drafting two Michael Carters.
