10 potential offensive coordinator candidates the Philadelphia Eagles should consider

Doug Pederson is expected to hire an offensive coordinator and Jim Caldwell is among 10 coach who the Eagles should target

The Philadelphia Eagles have started their staff retool after it was reported that both Rich Scangarello and Marty Mornhinweg would not return in their roles in 2021.

Jeff McLane is reporting that Press Taylor’s future with the Eagles is uncertain as well while dropping the news that Philadelphia will finally add an official offensive coordinator to the staff.

Here are 10 potential play-callers for Doug Pederson’s staff.

Duce Staley has been mentioned as a head coaching candidate over the past few offseasons but a hire never materialized after several interviews. Rather than becoming bitter, Staley has continued to grind, being named the Eagles’ assistant head coach to Doug Pederson and also gathering more responsibility.

Staley got his opportunity for even more responsibility when Pederson tested positive for COVID-19. During a Tuesday Zoom meeting, Staley gave some insight into what he learned during his 10 days in charge.

“First of all, it was awesome just being able to be in that role, [for] the organization [to] look at me and trust me to be in that role to lead the team,” he said. “So that was the awesome part of it. And I just took it one day at a time. Continuing to deliver Doug’s message. Continue to meet with the team. Continue to talk with Doug virtually to deliver his message. I took a lot from it. I tell you, it was exciting for me because of course, playing here in this great city and coming back coaching and being able to be the head coach for those ten days was just awesome. I can’t say enough about it.”

“I learned the three ‘L’s, and the three ‘L’s, are listen, learn and lead, so that’s what I got from that awesome experience,” Staley said. “One of the things we talk about as coaches and you guys have seen it (with) players over the last couple years when one of our star players goes down, it’s the next-man-up mentality. Well, Doug will tell you, it’s the next-man-up mentality this year dealing with the pandemic as coaches, also. So when Doug was out of the building, he trusted me to step right in and take over and continue to deliver our message as a team and continue to deliver his message. It was awesome, man. I’ve learned a lot.”

Staley handled the onfield activities and meetings at the NovaCare Complex while Pederson ran the team via Zoom meetings as he was quarantined at home from August 3-12.

The extra responsibility only enhances Staley’s resume as he looks to land a head coaching job in the NFL rather than take a step down to run a college football program.

Duce Staley to assume head coaching role for Eagles after Doug Pederson tests positive for COVID-19

The Philadelphia Eagles have a deep infrastructure of coaching experience on the roster and it’ll be needed after head coach Doug Pederson tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday.

Pederson informed the team after his second positive test and will lead the ball club from home virtually, while Duce Staley will assume head coaching responsibilities in his place.

Pederson is asymptomatic and feeling fine, according to ESPN’s Tim McManus and he joins Lane Johnson as the only two Eagles to have a positive test so far.

He joins Saints head coach Sean Payton as the only coaches to test positive and will continue to lead the team virtually from home.

Duce Staley chimes in on whether the Eagles need to add a veteran running back

The Philadelphia Eagles added speed and youth to the roster this offseason but they’ve also shied away from adding a big-name running back to the group.

Eagles’ brass has made it clear for months now that Miles Sanders is the workhorse and they’ll divvy up the remaining carries by committee, spreading them out among three veterans and two undrafted free agents.

Former Eagles great and current running backs coach Duce Staley was asked about the potential to add a veteran to the group and his sentiments matched Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman’s outlook on the group.

Staley said he’s happy about where the group is and when asked about Miles Sanders, he said this.

“I’m excited about him handling the full load. I don’t see Miles as a guy you have to monitor his touches. … I think you put him & you let him go.”

If Sanders can stay healthy and Boston Scott can continue his play from last season, the Eagles should be in good hands.

2020 NFL Combine: 5 RB’s for the Eagles to watch

2020 NFL Combine: 5 RB’s for the Philadelphia Eagles to watch

The 2020 NFL Combine kicked off on Monday, but the most important part of the week, the workouts, begins on Thursday in primetime.

Eagles executive vice president/general manager Howie Roseman and his staff are projected to have 10 picks to work with during the NFL Draft and with the goal being to retool and get younger, the Birds are set to infuse youth and talent.

The Eagles have Miles Sanders and Boston Scott but can always add more talent. With running back always being a need, here are five to watch at the combine.

1. Rico Dowdle — South Carolina

A Duce Staley clone and a guy the Eagles assistant head coach is familiar with, Dowdle could be a back of interest for the Eagles in later rounds.

The 5-foot-11, 213-pound running back with Staley’s son Damani, and has a physical style that the Eagles could need if Jordan Howard exits in free agency.

Did Duce Staley inquire about leaving Eagles to join the South Carolina staff as RB’s coach?

Duce Staley may have inquired about joining South Carolina’s staff

Duce Staley had to be upset about again being passed over for the Eagles offensive coordinator job but did the omission cause the former NFL star to inquire about a coaching job?

According to Josh Kendall of The Athletic, Staley, a former South Carolina star running back inquired with Gamecocks head coach Will Muschamp about the running backs coach position but was turned away.

Philadelphia Eagles assistant head coach and running backs coach Duce Staley, a former South Carolina tailback, inquired with Muschamp about the running backs coach position but was rebuffed, a source told The Athletic.

Now according to NBC Sports Rueben Frank via a source familiar with Staley, the former Gamecocks running back isn’t looking to leave the Eagles.

South Carolina running backs coach Thomas Brown left the program to take the running backs job under Sean McVay with the Rams, and that left some wondering if Staley was upset about being passed over by Doug Pederson.

According to the source, Staley would never leave the Eagles for a college gig, but once again being passed over for a promotion definitely has to sting?

Report: Mike Kafka to remain on Chiefs coaching staff as Eagles search for OC continues

Mike Kafka to remain on Chiefs coaching staff

The Philadelphia Eagles hunt for an offensive coordinator is continuing and another familiar name has removed himself from the process.

Mike Garafalo is reporting that Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has no intention of allowing Kafka to interview for the Eagles vacant offensive coordinator job.

Former Giants coach Ben McAdoo could be an option for the Eagles as an OC

Philadelphia Eagles could have an interest in Ben McAdoo as offensive coordinator

The Philadelphia Eagles are taking their time replacing Mike Groh as offensive coordinator, but Adam Schefter of ESPN.com believes one former coach of the Birds NFC East rival could fit the bill.

While appearing on 975 The Fanatic’s Farzetta and Tra In The Morning show on Wednesday, Schefter stated that McAdoo could be a name to watch in regards to the Eagles offensive coordinator opening.

“Ben McAdoo is out there,” Schefter said. “The Eagles, at one point in time, were actually interested in hiring him as a head coach. I think he’s ready to come back into the game as an offensive coordinator.”

Pederson is the play-caller in Philadelphia, so joining the Eagles would be the ultimate reputation rebuilder and the chance to have potential employers see his rebuilt image.

McAdoo was the head coach of the New York Giants for less than two full seasons and was removed in 2017 following a 2-10 start that saw Eli Manning’s streak of consecutive starts at quarterback come to an end.

Pederson could turn to Duce Staley or Press Taylor for the role, although Jim Caldwell is a name that has been thrown around the rumor mill.
