Ohio State basketball lets one get away against Purdue

The Ohio State basketball team looked to have one in the win column against Purdue, but couldn’t finish the deal in one that got away.

It’s a fine line between winning and losing in the Big Ten this year, and the Ohio State basketball team just found that out in a very cruel fashion Tuesday night.

The Buckeyes controlled the game almost all the way throughout at home against Purdue, but at the very end, they couldn’t make the plays needed to salt the game away and came out with a heartbreaking 67-65 loss. Credit has to be given to the Boilermakers for making things happen on their end, but there’s no way around it — OSU should have put this one away in the win column.

As it was, the Buckeyes still had a shot to do it after giving away a six to eleven point lead throughout the game when it had a possession with under a minute left and the score tied. That opportunity led to poor execution and a missed foul call on a Justin Ahrens’ three-point attempt.

Purdue took advantage of the “miss” and nailed a three on the other end to go up by three points. Purdue then fouled Duane Washington and set up a tough scenario in which he’d have to make the first and hope to get a rebound off a purposeful miss. OSU couldn’t pull it off, and as a result, Ohio State’s record falls to 5-4 in the Big Ten and 11-4 overall.

If you’re keeping track, that’s two games Ohio State let get away now. The game against Northwestern on the road had a very similar feeling, and it’s two games that could have a significant impact on postseason plans.

Duane Washington, Jr. led all scorers with 21 points, going six of nine from beyond the arc, and seven of fourteen from the field overall.

OSU now has to pull up its bootstraps and find a way to get something done on the road against Wisconsin on Saturday.

Three takeaways from Ohio State basketball’s win over Northwestern

Ohio State split the season series against Northwestern by controlling most of the game Wednesday night. Here are three takeaways.

After letting one get away in Evanston a couple of weeks ago, Ohio State was able to get a little bit of revenge against the Northwestern Wildcats Wednesday. The Buckeyes led almost the entire game, absorbed a late run, but pulled away at the end to win a key Big Ten matchup 81-71

There’s a lot to unpack here since Ohio State was without its two main ball-handlers. The Buckeyes still found a way to beat a team that can get hot from beyond the arc and make life difficult on any team.

As we do after every game, here are three things we can take away from the OSU’ win over Northwestern to run their overall record to 10-3, and the Big Ten record to 4-3.

NEXT … Not bad at the point

Ohio State basketball hands No. 11 Rutgers its first loss

Ohio State basketball took it on the chin in the first half but rallied in the second 20 minutes to knock off unbeaten Rutgers.

Just when you thought things were going south, the Ohio State basketball team got up off the mat and showed its resiliency by handing the Rutgers Scarlet Knights their first loss of the 2020-21 campaign 80-68.

It would be an understatement of the century to tell you that Rutgers was on the verge of running the Buckeyes out of the gym in the first half. The Scarlet Knights were playing with purpose, defending, and shooting the lights out. They took a sixteen point lead midway through the first 20 minutes and went into the locker room up 38-28.

It all changed in the second half though. Ohio State outscored Rutgers 52-30 in the second half thanks to some foul and injury trouble by the Scarlet Knights. The Buckeyes began to pound the ball inside, got the benefit of some calls, and Rutgers had no answer once the fouls and parade to the foul-line started.

Add that to guard Jakob Young going out of the game with injury midway through the second half, and the Rutgers team that finished the game wasn’t nearly the same one that started it on fire.

Still though, this was all about Ohio State imposing its will going to the rim. Ohio State got 22 points from the free-throw line and outrebounded Rutgers 45-25. Duane Washington led the Buckeyes with 22 points, and E.J. Liddell wasn’t far behind with 21 of his own, many of it coming in and around the lane. Kyle Young chipped in another 17 points.

It was Rutgers’ first loss of the season, and one that the Buckeyes should be able to use as a building block for the rest of the season.

As a side note, Ohio State forward Seth Towns recorded his first points in a Buckeye uniform and finished with four points. As he gets more healthy and his conditioning improves, he could end up being an x-factor the rest of the way.

With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 7-1. They are next in action Saturday at Northwestern.

Three things we learned in Ohio State’s loss to Purdue in Big Ten basketball opener

Ohio State went on the road for its first Big Ten game of the season and fell to Purdue 67-60. Here are three things we learned in defeat.

It was always going to be an uphill climb for Ohio State to go on the road and beat a pretty good Purdue team without your team’s best scorer and rebounder, and that’s exactly what played out. The Boilermakers took control of the game late in the first half and stayed in front until the end, winning 67-60 Wednesday night in West Lafayette.

It was a prototypical Big Ten slugfest, with a low-scoring, defensive affair that Purdue was able to grind out. We saw some good things from Ohio State, but there were also plenty of teaching moments that head coach Chris Holtmann will have for the team in tape review.

With the loss, the Buckeyes drop to 5-1 and now must get back up off the mat and play through a rough and tumble Big Ten season that will test them every night.

Here are three things we observed from the loss.

Ohio State vs. Morehead State basketball preview, prediction, and odds

Ohio State welcomes Morehead State to the Covelli Center for game three of the young season. We’ve got your preview and prediction.

Records

Ohio State 2-0, Morehead State 1-2

Broadcast, TV, Game Time

Date: Wednesday, December 2
Game Time: 5 p.m. EST
Venue: Covelli Center, Columbus, OH

After getting out of the gate quickly and coasting to victory in game one of the season against Illinois State, then struggling but winning against UMass-Lowell, Ohio State men’s basketball team looks to go to 3-0 against Morehead State.

The Eagles have been bludgeoned by Kentucky, had a public flogging at the hands of Richmond, but then got their first win of the year against Arkansas State on Sunday. It’s not a team Ohio State should have issues with if it expects to contend for anything in the Big Ten, but this Buckeye squad is clearly looking to find its identity based on what we saw over the weekend.

Now is the time to clean up on some of those things that will make this team much better down the road, and we really need to see a better showing this time out.

Three things we learned from Ohio State basketball’s win over Illinois State

The Ohio State basketball team opened its 2020-2021 season Wednesday in blowout fashion vs. Illinois State. Here are 3 things we observed.

Well, hello there college basketball. We’ve missed you.

Ohio State broke the seal on its 2020-2021 season and we got our first look at what this team is made of. With so many new faces to go along with new uniforms and a long layoff because of the coronavirus pandemic, it sure felt like a completely different era in Columbus.

But Chris Holtmann is still the head coach and there is a little bit of returning talent that will get thrown into the mix. We did get to observe plenty of things during Ohio State’s 94-67 win over Illinois State and we’re got three of the biggest things we can take from what we saw from game one.

So let’s get to it. Here are three things we learned as we unwrapped the gift that is Ohio State basketball in the new season.

Ohio State basketball vs. Illinois State: 3 keys to a Buckeye victory

Ohio State takes on Illinois State today and needs to get out to a good start to the season. Here are three keys to a Buckeye victory.

[jwplayer xIaIpIGM-er0jUifI]

Rejoice because college basketball is back. We get our first peek at the Ohio State basketball team today and though it snuck up on you no doubt, it’s great to have hoops back.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again — with so many fresh faces on this year’s team, we don’t really know what to expect. So, we’ll be watching like the rest of you to figure out where the scoring will come from, what this team’s identity will be — and most importantly — can the collective gel to exceed expectations?

No matter what we see, the Buckeyes simply can’t afford to get out of the gate with a loss against an Illinois State team that frankly isn’t expected to be very good. And on that note, here are three keys to a Buckeyes victory on the hardwood Wednesday.

WATCH: Chris Holtmann, players provides update on Ohio State basketball

Ohio State basketball head coach Chris Holtmann and a few of the players met with media Friday to provide an update on the season.

Things have ticked along so slowly with Ohio State and Big Ten football that we’re inching ever so closer to Buckeye basketball season. Moreso than ever, hoops will coincide with football in Columbus.

To that end, there was a smorgasbord of interviews today between the football program and the basketball team. Needless to say, it was a busy day.

Ohio State offered up not only head coach Chris Holtmann but some of the players on the team. It lasted about an hour and there was plenty of information given and questions asked and answered. Some are still unknown with the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was nice to see faces again and get some information.

If you missed any of what was said, thanks to the Columbus Dispatch, we’ve got full video of the appearance below. Simply click on the below video and watch as Kyle Young, Duane Washington, C.J. Walker, and coach Holmann discuss injury concerns, the schedule, improvements in development, and all the uncertainty of today.

Ohio State leads Michigan by three at halftime in tough shooting game

Ohio State has done just enough to head into halftime up by three points against Michigan.

Both teams have gone through some stretches of making shots, but both have had more than their fair share of not putting the basketball through the hoop in Columbus. Ohio State is shooting just 40.6 percent from the floor, while Michigan is making only 38.5 percent of its shots. It was just enough for the Buckyes to lead at halftime by a 32-29 pedestrian score.

Duane Washington got OSU going in the early part of the first half, and finished with twelve points at the break to lead all scorers. He went 4 of 9 from the field, but 3 of 4 bombing away from beyond the arc.

Kaleb Wesson has struggled however against the front line of the Wolverines. He’s gone just 1 of 9 from field, and has yet to hit a two-point bucket, nailing just one three-pointer.

For Michigan, it has had pretty even scoring. Three players have six points, including Isaiah Livers, John Teske, and Zavier Simpson.

Ohio State needs to find more offense in the second-half, most notably with an effort to get Kaleb Wesson going. It’s doubtful that Michigan will have as poor of a scoring half as what it did in the first twenty minutes.

Now to finish the deal.

Ohio State vs. Maryland 2020 basketball preview, prediction, and odds

Ohio State hosts Maryland in a pivotal Big Ten matchup. We’ve got your preview, prediction and odds for the game.

Records

Ohio State 17-9 (7-8), Maryland 22-4 (12-3)

Broadcast, TV, Game Time

Date: Sunday, February 23
Game Time: 4:00 PM
Venue: Value City Arena, Columbus, OH
Network: CBS

This feels like a pivotal game for Ohio State. It’s not necessarily a game it has to have to get into the NCAA Tournament, but it needs to have a good showing against one of the really good teams in the conference to build on something that could mean a deeper run in March.

Right now, this team is one that seems to lack confidence whenever it faces a little adversity. It can play from ahead, and can make a run when there’s nothing to lose and the game is out of hand. It needs a game where it pulls out a close one against one of the best teams in the country, and that’s the opportunity Maryland presents.

But does Ohio State have the horses and toughness to do it? If so, it’s a huge win. If not, the fragile psyche of this team will only cement itself further.

Here’s our preview and prediction for the game.
