Jets hoping to get Duane Brown back from PUP list this week

Positive news on the offensive line for the Jets

The Jets are hoping left tackle Duane Brown will be cleared for practice and be able to come off the physically unable to perform list this week, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Brown met with doctors for testing this week and the team is hoping for more information Tuesday. If he is cleared, the Jets can remove him from the PUP and get him back into this lineup this week. That would be great news for the Jets, who had been running Billy Turner and Max Mitchell as the tackles. That could soon become Brown and Mekhi Becton.

This would give Brown three weeks to get into game shape before the season opener September 11 against the Buffalo Bills. The next step would be getting Alijah Vera-Tucker and Laken Tomlinson back into the starting lineup as well as working Joe Tippmann back in from injury as well. But this news on Brown is certainly a positive.

Robert Saleh is confident that Duane Brown will be ready for Week 1

Robert Saleh didn’t provide an exact timetable for Duane Brown to return for the Jets, but he believes he’ll be active in Week 1.

Duane Brown hasn’t practiced yet for the New York Jets this offseason as he’s been on the PUP list, but his return seems to be imminent. When updating the media on Brown’s potential return, Robert Saleh was confident in saying that the veteran offensive tackle will be ready for Week 1.

Brown signed with the Jets before the 2022 season, however, he would sustain a shoulder injury that would sideline him for the first four games. The former first-round pick would elect to forego surgery during the season and would make 12 starts at left tackle before the team decided to sit him for Week 18.

Earlier this offseason, Brown underwent shoulder surgery and shared that he’d prefer to return to the Jets for his 16th season in the NFL. Brown, who turns 38 years old at the end of August, is looking to earn a starting job again along the offensive line.

At the moment, Billy Turner and Max Mitchell are the listed starters at both tackle spots, with Mekhi Becton trailing them. Even though it remains to be seen if Brown will be starting to begin the season, fans should expect him to be on the field in Week 1 versus the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

The Jets placed left tackle Duane Brown on the physically unable to perform list Saturday after he reported to camp. Brown is still working his way back from shoulder surgery.

Brown can still do team activities, he just cannot practice while on the list. He can be removed at any time and still counts on the 90-man roster.

Brown joins Breece Hall, C.J. Uzomah, Randall Cobb and Jarrick Bernard-Converse on the list.

This could allow Mekhi Becton and perhaps even Billy Turner to get some reps at left tackle, making the competition even more interesting and at least getting both more work during camp.

Robert Saleh says Duane Brown will be a ‘hard out’ at left tackle

Duane Brown seems set at left tackle.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh has said numerous times the team will start the best five on the offensive line. But as we sit in June near the end of OTAs, we can probably pencil in three of those starting five.

The two guard spots were already set in stone with Laken Tomlinson on the left and Alijah Vera-Tucker on the right. The third position that looks set seems to be left tackle.

Saleh was asked about the possibility of Duane Brown moving to right tackle, a position he hasn’t played since college. Saleh didn’t rule that out but seemed to indicate Brown is pretty well set on the left side.

“That’s something that we’ll look at,” Saleh said. “He obviously is very comfortable at that left tackle spot. There’s guys who can play right and left and just trying to sort it out. We’ll get to all of that as we go, but I have a feeling Duane will be a hard out anyway. He looks good, he’s doing a real nice job, but everything will be taken into consideration once we start to settle in on which five are going to be the five that we roll into the season with.”

Brown decided to return for a second season with the Jets and his 16th NFL season. Brown, who turns 38 in August, played 12 games last season while dealing with an injured shoulder throughout the year.

Assuming Brown is all but locked in, that would leave just two spots up front that are up for grabs: center and right tackle. Connor McGovern and rookie Joe Tippmann are in the mix at center while Mekhi Becton, Max Mitchell and Billy Turner are among the contenders at right tackle.

Report: Duane Brown plans to return in 2023

Report: Duane Brown plans to return in 2023

Jets left tackle Duane Brown plans to return for the 2023 season, per his agent, Kennard McGuire, in a report from ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

2023 will be Brown’s second with the Jets and his 17th overall. Brown started 12 games in 2022, holding down the left tackle position while dealing with shoulder issues throughout the season. There was talk of a possible retirement for Brown, but those talks can be put to rest.

The Jets have made it clear they were ready to have Brown back for 2023 and will be excited to have Brown likely anchor the left side again next season. Saleh was asked about Brown last week during a Zoom press conference.

“Yeah, I saw Duane in the weight room a couple days ago, three or four days ago anyway, but he just finished up his surgery on his left shoulder,” Saleh said.  “Yeah, Duane is a freaking rock star, man. The way he fought through pain and injury, and he did what I’d say about 90% of players probably wouldn’t have done, in terms of playing when he didn’t have to. All his money was already guaranteed, and the guy still strapped up and played 16 or however many games for us, took it all the way to Week 17. So, a lot of respect for him, love his grind, love his grit, love what he stands for, and if he’s here, it’d be awesome.”

Brown is due a $9 million base salary and will carry a cap charge of almost $11.3 million. With Brown in tow, the Jets will have to figure out the other offensive tackle position, whether that will be Mekhi Becton, Max Mitchell or possibly a rookie.

Duane Brown named Jets nominee for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

Duane Brown named Jets nominee for Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award

The NFL unveiled its list of 32 nominees for the 2022 Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award. One player from each team gets selected. For the New York Jets, that player this season is offensive tackle Duane Brown.

The Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award is given annually to “an NFL player who best demonstrates the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents, and integrity in competition.” and is named for Art Rooney Sr.

Those 32 players will be whittled down to eight finalists, selected by a panel including Warrick Dunn, Leonard Wheeler, Larry Fitzgerald and Hall of Famer and former Jets running back Curtis Martin. Those eight finalists will be voted on by players in December on the Pro Bowl ballot. Similar to Pro Bowl voting, a team cannot vote for their own player.

The winner will be announced during the NFL Honors show the night before the Super Bowl.

Jets’ Week 11 Wednesday injury report: Corey Davis remains question mark

Will Corey Davis return this week? Looks 50/50 for now.

Fresh off their bye in Week 10, the New York Jets are back on the practice field to prepare for their big rematch in Week 11 with the New England Patriots. But it remains to be seen if one of their top wide receivers will be available for the game.

There’s a little concern with wide receiver Corey Davis. After the team was hopeful he could return after the bye week, Davis missed Wednesday’s practice as he continues to recover from the knee injury he suffered in Week 7 against the Broncos.

Head coach Robert Saleh did say there’s a chance Davis will be out there on Sunday but noted that Davis would not practice Wednesday. “He has a chance,” said Saleh. “He’s not going to practice today, but we’re going to see how far we can progress him over the course of the week.”

In other injury report news for the Jets, guard Nate Herbig also missed practice yesterday with a shin injury, but Saleh’s comment gave the sense Herbig will be fine, saying “he’s dealing with something with his leg” but that he’s “not really concerned” about his availability for Sunday.

Defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins also missed practice Wednesday and the likelihood is he will be out this week, but Saleh said he is “pretty confident” that he will not have to go on injured reserve.

“Rankins has been fantastic,” Saleh said when asked about his play. “He’s having a really nice season. Hopefully, this injury is not too long, but it’s next man up mentality. We’ll see how the week goes with how we utilize it. We have been playing plus-one, plus-two on the d-line, and activating 10 anyway. We’ll figure it out as the week goes.”

Duane Brown is on his typical week of being listed as limited in practice. There is no concern with him.

Max Mitchell is expected to return to practice this week as well, but he will not show up on the official injury report yet as he has not been activated from injured reserve. Saleh said Cedric Ogbuehi will remain at right tackle and “we’ll see how Max progresses.”

For the Patriots, only one active player missed practice Wednesday and that was defensive lineman DaMarcus Mitchell with an illness.

Punter Jake Bailey (back), DL Christian Barmore (knee), S Kyle Dugger (ankle), LB Anfernee Jennings (back), WR DeVante Parker (knee) and LB Josh Uche (hamstring) were all limited.

Duane Brown activated and will start Sunday, Max Mitchell to IR

Duane Brown activated and will start Sunday, Max Mitchell to IR

The Jets have officially activated left tackle Duane Brown from injured reserve and he will start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, his first start as a Jet. In a corresponding move, the Jets placed offensive tackle Max Mitchell on injured reserve.

Brown returned to practice this week after spending the first four weeks of the season on IR with a shoulder injury. The Jets had 21 days to activate Brown to the 53-man roster, but they wasted little time as Brown practiced in some capacity all week and felt very good. He will finally make his Jets debut in the team’s first divisional game of the season against the Dolphins.

Mitchell injured his knee during Sunday’s win over the Steelers and the Jets had said injured reserve was a possibility for Mitchell. It’s not a season-ending injury for Mitchell, which is good news. The earliest Mitchell can return is November 6 against the Bills, however the Jets have their bye the following week, so it would be more likely Mitchell would return November 20 against the Patriots than the 6th.

The Jets also elevated linebacker Hamseh Nasirildeen from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday. The Jets continue to deal with injuries at the linebacker position, namely Quincy Williams, who is out again with an ankle injury. This is Nasirildeen’s second elevation to the practice squad, having also been elevated last week against the Steelers.

Duane Brown and Vinny Curry return to practice, opening 21-day window for roster activation

Duane Brown and Vinny Curry return to practice

The Jets announced Wednesday that left tackle Duane Brown and defensive lineman Vinny Curry have returned to practice, opening their 21-day windows, respectively, to be activated to the roster after becoming eligible to return from injured reserve this week.

Head coach Robert Saleh said they will get more information on both players Wednesday and Thursday. Specifically, on Brown and the possibility of him playing Sunday, Saleh said, “We’ll see. You know me, I’m going to say optimistically, but I’m going to go with the doctor approach on this one and say day-to-day. We’ll see.”

With both players now back at practice, the Jets have 21 days to bring them back onto the active roster, or they would miss the rest of the season. In this case, both will certainly be back on the roster at some point, but it doesn’t seem like it will be this week, meaning it could be another week with Alijah Vera-Tucker at left tackle. Saleh is keeping that information close to the vest for now and we likely won’t find out anything until this weekend, perhaps even Sunday.
