Jets placing Connor McGovern, Wes Schweitzer on injured reserve

The Jets are placing Connor McGovern and Wes Schweitzer on injured reserve.

The injury bug hit the Jets hard on Sunday, particularly on the offensive line. A pair of interior offensive linemen are heading to injured reserve.

Head coach Robert Saleh told reporters Monday that center Connor McGovern (knee) and guard Wes Schweitzer (calf) are both being placed on injured reserve. Both will miss at least the next four games. They can return for New York’s Week 13 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

Saleh said both have a chance to return this season. On McGovern, he said McGovern isn’t “out of the woods” in regards to whether he needs surgery or not but it’s a best-case scenario based on how the injury initially seemed on Sunday.

Fortunately for the Jets, Joe Tippmann may be back this week, as well as tackle Duane Brown. The Jets will decide over the next few days on those two. Brown is still on injured reserve and the team has yet to open his practice window.

Elsewhere on the injury front, Saleh confirmed that defensive tackle Al Woods is done for the season with an Achilles injury.

Duane Brown will not be activated this week, says Robert Saleh

Duane Brown will not be activated this week, says Robert Saleh

Jets offensive tackle Duane Brown may be eligible to come off injured reserve this week, but the team is choosing to hold off on that for at least another week, according to head coach Robert Saleh.

“He looks good, everything looks good, we’re just going to wait another week- we’re pushing it back another week,” Saleh told reporters Wednesday. “Not saying that he’ll be activated next week, but we have time on that one.”

The Jets initially placed Brown on injured reserve back on September 23, before the team’s Week 3 game against the New England Patriots. The team could have chosen to open his 21-day practice window this week, but they will hold off on doing so, at least until next week and perhaps even longer than that.

After the Jets moved Brown to injured reserve, Mekhi Becton took over as the starting left tackle, Alijah Vera-Tucker became the right tackle and rookie Joe Tippmann slotted in at right guard. Vera-Tucker is now out for the season with an Achilles tear while Tippmann is working his way back from a quad injury and did not practice Wednesday.

But overall, the line was playing much better in recent weeks and we recently touched on why the Jets shouldn’t make any changes even when Brown does come back. For now, the Jets don’t even have to worry about that because Brown will not be on the active roster for at least another week.

Jets should keep status quo up front when Duane Brown returns

Jets should keep status quo up front when Duane Brown returns

Jets offensive tackle Duane Brown is eligible to return from injured reserve this week. The Jets will have to decide how they want to configure offensive line when he is eventually activated. Head coach Robert Saleh didn’t tip his hand yesterday as to what the team plans to do.

While we don’t know exactly what they will do yet, there’s an idea of what they should do and it doesn’t take much thinking at all: keep the status quo.

Ever since Mekhi Becton moved back to left tackle following Brown’s placement on injured reserve, Becton has been very comfortable and has finally been able to stay healthy and show why the Jets took him with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 draft. Remember that the Jets declined to pick up his fifth-year option. Understandably so as Becton had played one game in the past two seasons due to knee injuries.

But now Becton is playing much better and there is no reason to fix what isn’t broke. Same goes for the rest of the offensive line. The only change you could maybe consider would be putting Brown at right tackle, in place of Max Mitchell. But Brown has never played right tackle and it’s hard to imagine he would be willing to do so at 38 years old.

Brown can give the Jets extra backup along the offensive line, but the Jets would be doing themselves a ton of disservice by putting Brown back in the starting lineup and ruining all of the momentum they have built up over the past few weeks.

Jets place Duane Brown on injured reserve, out at least four games

Duane Brown now heads to injured reserve. He is out at least four games.

The Jets have placed left tackle Duane Brown on injured reserve with a hip injury. Brown is now out at least four games.

Brown missed practice this week with a hip injury and went for an evaluation Friday. The Jets initially listed Brown as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Patriots. New York then downgraded Brown to out for Sunday. Now he will miss at least the next four games — vs. Patriots, vs. Chiefs, at Broncos, vs. Eagles — while on injured reserve.

The Jets’ bye week comes after the Eagles game so Brown will get at least five weeks of rest before potentially returning in Week 8 against the Giants.

The Jets signed linebacker Sam Eguavoen to the active roster in a corresponding move and also elevated offensive lineman Chris Glaser from the practice squad. They filled Eguavoen’s spot on the practice squad with running back Xazavian Valladay, who was released on Friday.

Duane Brown downgraded to out for Week 3

Duane Brown will not play Sunday.

The Jets have downgraded left tackle Duane Brown to out for Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

Brown has been dealing with hip and shoulder injuries — the hip injury being new —which caused him to miss practice all week. Despite the optimism from head coach Robert Saleh, Brown will not play Sunday. Brown went for a hip evaluation on Friday.

With Brown out, the Jets could turn to Billy Turner at left tackle with Mekhi Becton at right ankle. Max Mitchell will be the backup. The Jets also recently signed veteran Cedric Ogbuehi to the practice squad and could be a possible practice squad elevation for Sunday. Rookie Carter Warren remains on injured reserve.

The Jets could also move Becton to left tackle and put Turner at right tackle. One more potential option could be moving Alijah Vera-Tucker to one of the tackle spots and putting rookie Joe Tippmann at right guard. Wes Schweitzer, who could have been in play, is out with a concussion.

Jets vs. Patriots injury report: Tony Adams, Wes Schweitzer out

Jets will be without a defensive starter Sunday.

Two players, including a defensive starter, for the New York Jets will miss Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots because of an injury.

Starting safety Tony Adams injured his hamstring during last week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys and did not practice all week. He is out meaning Adrian Amos is likely to start next to Jordan Whitehead on Sunday.

The Jets will also be without backup interior offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer. He popped up on the injury report Friday with a concussion. Schweitzer missed four games in 2022 with a concussion.

Three players are listed as questionable including left tackle Duane Brown, who dealt with a new hip injury this week to go with his shoulder injury he has been listed with. Brown did not practice all week but the Jets left open the door that he could still play Sunday. If not, it will likely be Billy Turner starting in his place.

Also questionable are edge John Franklin-Myers (hip) and kicker Greg Zuerlein (groin). Both were full participants in practice Friday, which should be a good sign for their availability Sunday.

The Patriots have five players listed as questionable: DL Christian Barmore (knee), CB Jonathan Jones (ankle), OL Mike Onwenu (ankle), OL Sidy Sow (concussion) and OG Cole Strange (knee). All were limited all week except for Sow who did not practice Thursday but was back in a limited fashion Friday.

Duane Brown misses second day of practice, causing even more concern up front

Duane Brown missed practice again, line issues continue.

As if the offensive line woes from Sunday weren’t enough, Jets left tackle Duane Brown is now dealing with a hip injury to go along with his lingering shoulder injury. Brown has now missed two days of practice. Friday will be an important day toward his game status for Sunday against the Patriots.

If Brown can’t go, it will likely be Billy Turner starting at left tackle with Mekhi Becton on the right and Max Mitchell as the backup. The Jets also recently signed veteran offensive tackle Cedric Ogbuehi to the practice squad.

Turner didn’t exactly inspire confidence when he ran as one of the starting tackles during the preseason while Brown was out and Becton hadn’t yet cracked the starting lineup. But it can’t get much worse.

Brown is currently dead last among 68 eligible offensive tackles in pass-block win rate (H/T New York Post). Last week against Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys certainly didn’t help.

This week presents another challenge in Patriots star edge-rusher Matthew Judon. The Jets need to figure out a better way to handle that pass rush and allow quarterback Zach Wilson more time to be able to get the ball to his playmakers.

There could also be the possibility that the Jets consider moving Alijah Vera-Tucker to left tackle and put Wes Schweitzer at right guard (and eventually play Joe Tippmann over Connor McGovern at center).

The offensive line was always the biggest concern for the Jets even before Aaron Rodgers was injured. Now it’s coming into fruition early in the season.

Final Week 1 Jets injury report: Three questionable but should be good to go

Final Week 1 Jets injury report: Three questionable but should be good to go

The Jets released their final injury report for Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. Left tackle Duane Brown (shoulder), right tackle Mekhi Becton (knee) and running back Breece Hall (knee) are all listed as questionable for the game. However, all three were full participants in practice Saturday after being limited all week — Becton missed Friday due to an illness.

The only new addition to the injury report for the Jets on Saturday was nickelback Michael Carter II, who was listed with an elbow injury. Head coach Robert Saleh said he is fine, Carter practiced in full Saturday and he does not have a game designation for Monday.

For the Bills, safety Micah Hyde was a full participant again Saturday after being limited Thursday with a back injury but was upgraded to full on Friday. He is good to go for Monday.

Duane Brown to be activated from PUP list Wednesday

Duane Brown is back

The Jets are getting their starting left tackle back Wednesday. Per Connor Hughes of SNY, Duane Brown’s doctor’s appointment in Houston came back with “zero concerns” Tuesday and will be activated off the physically unable to perform list Wednesday once he gets back to New Jersey.

Brown will likely just do individual drills Wednesday but the key is that the Jets have their left tackle and could have their entire starting line in play this week. Mekhi Becton is starting at right tackle and both Alijah Vera-Tucker and Laken Tomlinson will be available this week as well with Connor McGovern at center.

The Jets face the New York Giants in the last preseason game of the season and Aaron Rodgers will see action in the game as well in what will be a bit of a dress rehearsal for the Jets that will now include what should be the full starting offensive line.
