Texas DB D’Shawn Jamison announces return for one more season

Great news.

The curtains haven’t closed on D’Shawn Jamison’s career as a Longhorn just yet.

The senior defensive back took to Twitter to announce that he will be running it back, and use his extra year of eligibility.

This is a great sign for the Longhorns, who outside of Jamison now, are losing all of their starting defensive backs from this past season. Texas badly needs leadership on both sides of the ball to help integrate what is looking like a very good and enthusiastic 2022 class, and Jamison could step up as one of those leaders.

Jamison coming back could also be a sign of him wanting to right some wrongs that happened this season, as he was apart of a defense that gave up 224 passing yards per game, and was often targeted by opposing offenses.

He also did not have as big of an impact in the return game as he did in seasons prior.

Jamison and the Texas defense need to take a major step in order to help the program erase the disappointing 5-7 season.

First half recap of Texas’ 17-13 halftime lead over Oklahoma State

Texas leads Oklahoma State 17-13 at the half.

The Longhorns are going into halftime with a 17-13 lead, but the game has not really been as close as the score indicates.

Texas’ passing game has been far from prolific and is actually why Oklahoma State has a touchdown in the first place. Casey Thompson stared down a receiver and threw a pick-six during the second quarter.  Other than that mistake the offense has been average, minus the likes of Bijan Robinson who has both of the team’s touchdowns and over 100 total yards already.

On defense, there was a major concern going into the game, mostly in reference to if they would be able to slow down Oklahoma State’s running back Jaylen Warren. He has been running wild over the past few games.

But the defense has actually looked worlds better in comparison to last week and has held Warren to 55 yards on 13 carries averaging 4.2 yards per carry. They have made life on Spencer Sanders really difficult, with D’Shawn Jamison benefiting from a bad throw and was able to pick him off.

Sanders is not the only quarterback struggling, as Thompson has been pretty far off all day outside of one deep pass to Marcus Washington who is filling in for Jordan Whittington. Thompson’s throws have been very off-target all game and after he threw the interception, he has looked very skittish in the pocket. Texas needs him to step it up in the second half, and for the defense to keep containing Warren as much as possible.

Key stats

Bijan Robinson (RB): 13 carries for 74 yards and one touchdown, and three catches for 38 yards and a touchdown.

Casey Thompson (QB): 11-of-19 for 153 yards, and one touchdown and interception.

Spencer Sanders (QB): 12-of-20 for 106 yards, and one interception

Jaylen Warren (RB): 13 carries for 55 yards, 4.3 yards per carry.

Five bold predictions for Texas’ game against Rice

Let’s get BOLD.

Just two games into the season, the Longhorns have already experienced what feels like a seasons worth of ups and downs.

Texas started the season hot out of the gates, beating a ranked Louisiana team by 20 points, which had the nation pondering if they were back. The Longhorns provided the answer the following week, when they got absolutely embarrassed by an unranked Arkansas team.

The stud redshirt freshman quarterback Hudson Card from the first game was no where to be found, as he was plagued by overthrows and always being on the run due to the offensive line getting consistently torn apart by a three-man front. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has decided that
Casey Thompson will now start for the Longhorns in Week 3 against Rice.

Whether or not Thompson benefited from the Arkansas defense being in prevent, and not having a specific game plan for him is yet to be seen. However, he produced two touchdowns against the Razorbacks and provided Texas with a spark that they seemed to be lacking.

The Rice matchup will be the first start of Thompson’s collegiate career and he is hoping to never let go of the job he once yearned for.

The rest of the team is looking to bounce back, as there was not a single positive aspect of the game outside of Thompson coming in and rushing for two touchdowns when Texas was down 33-7.

My bold predictions from last week did not go as planned by any means, as I was not expecting the Longhorns to be throttled the way they were. To keep the weekly tradition rolling, here are my five bold predictions for Texas’ matchup against Rice in Week 3.

Big 12 Football: Preseason All-Big 12 Team

The Longhorns Wire’s All-Big 12 preseason team. Which Texas players should be on the list for some awards by season’s end?

The college football season is closer by the day with the anticipated kickoff just 63 days away. As is customary for all media outlets, lists of preseason award watchlists and all-conference teams will be flying off the shelves. For Longhorns Wire it is no different as we put together our All-Big 12 team. This will consist of a first and second team for all positions on the football field. We start at the skill positions.

The Skill Positions

Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

Senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger leads the charge for the skill positions. He is the only Longhorn among the first team selections. A big year could be in store for the Austin native as he attempts to chase the school’s all-time record for passing yards in a career. He will need a monster season to catch Colt McCoy. Ehlinger currently sits second in school history with 8,870 yards passing and second in total offense with 10,400 yards.

For the second team, the Longhorns have running back Keaontay Ingram and wide receiver Brennan Eagles. Ingram is coming off his best season in 2019 but that running back room is getting even more crowded with Roschon Johnson and newcomer Bijan Robinson. He will need a strong season to fight up the number one running back in 2020 recruiting class.

Brennan Eagles returns as the leading receiver from the 2019 team. He finished second with six receiving touchdowns. He was also third on the team in yards with 522, just behind Collin Johnson. Eagles will likely play the X receiver role in the new look Mike Yurcich offense and should expect plenty of looks from Ehlinger as they get the passing offense rolling.
