The Kansas City Chiefs lost a heartbreaker to the Philadelphia Eagles at home on Monday night mainly because of their struggles on offense. All 17 of the team’s points were in the first half as the Eagles capitalized on Kansas City’s mistakes to steal the victory at rainy Arrowhead Stadium.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes gritted out the game with tough throws not often secured by his receivers. He addressed the issues on offense with reporters during his postgame press conference.

“Yeah, I don’t think it’s just me and receivers. I think, offensively, we’re just not where I would want to be at this point in the season. And that starts with me,” said Mahomes. “I got to get to make better throws at certain times. We got to continue to move the ball down the field and just be more consistent thoroughly throughout the game.”

The Chiefs’ pass catchers had several drops during Monday’s game, none more significant than receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s dropped touchdown pass on the team’s last drive.

“Yeah, I have no regrets. I mean, they tripled-teamed Travis (Kelce). So I went to the guy that was that one downfield, and Marquez was one we just didn’t come away with the ball. I could probably throw a little bit shorter. He was that open. So you just got to continue to try to get better and better,” said Mahomes. “Defense is keeping us in games. And if we can find a way to just get a little bit better as an offense, we’re going to win a lot of these games.”

Mahomes will always have confidence in his receivers, especially in Valdes-Scantling, with whom he’s had great success in the past. The Chiefs will be on a short week as they travel to Las Vegas on Sunday to face the Raiders.

Patrick Mahomes has done his best to keep the Kansas City Chiefs on top of the AFC through nine weeks of play in the 2023 season, and despite his self-inflicted struggles at times, he has consistently been let down by his receiving corps.
According to Bleacher Report Gridiron, Kansas City’s pass catchers have dropped no less than 24 passes over the course of the season.

Several miscues came during the Chiefs’ Week 1 matchup against the Detroit Lions when Kansas City took its first loss of the season after offensive dysfunction derailed any chance they had to make a late comeback.
Dropped passes are part of the game of football, but can be absolutely deadly for a team competing for a Super Bowl title.
Fans should hope the Chiefs’ issue with butterfingers is fixed after the team’s bye week ahead of Kansas City’s fast-approaching Super Bowl LVII rematch against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 20.

Let that sink in for a second…

St. Brown had 119 passes thrown his way in 2021 as a fourth-round pick out of USC. He caught 90 of those, with at least eight catches on at least 10 targets in each of the Lions’ last six games, a period that coincides with new offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and head coach Dan Campbell taking more control over the offense. But St. Brown did not drop a single pass, according to Field Yates of ESPN.

Other sources dispute Yates’ claim that St. Brown did not have a drop, which is an unofficial and arbitrary statistic. Pro Football Focus had St. Brown for two, both in the Week 2 loss in Green Bay. Pro Football Reference logged one drop for St. Brown as a rookie.

I went back and rewatched the Week 2 game. It was easy to ascertain which passes PFF credited as drops since St. Brown caught three of his five targets in Green Bay. The first “drop”, right before halftime, did hit St. Brown in his hands along the sideline, but it appears the defensive back made a play on the ball just before St. Brown did. The second, with just over 2:00 to play in the game, was not an accurate pass from Jared Goff.

The Lions as a team did a very good job at not dropping passes. Per NBC Sports, Detroit had 13 total drops in 17 games. Only three teams had fewer drops on the season.
