Drew Rosenhaus says Dolphins tried to trade for TE Darren Waller

That would’ve been another big splash.

Entering the 2022 season, the Miami Dolphins were undergoing a large shift in their building, as Mike McDaniel was taking over as head coach and bringing his offensive scheme with him.

In that system, tight ends are used a bit differently than they had been in the offenses during Brian Flores’ regime, which meant Mike Gesicki, a former first-round pick who was kept around on a franchise tag, probably wasn’t going to be the best fit.

With that knowledge, the Dolphins apparently tried to make some moves to add talent to the room. According to NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus on The Pat McAfee Show, Miami was involved in trade discussions to acquire tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders before he landed with the New York Giants.

It’s not clear when these discussions were had, but Gesicki and Waller both had down years in 2022 and probably could’ve benefited from being in different situations.

Now, heading into 2023, Gesicki is with the New England Patriots, and the Dolphins are left with the recently extended Durham Smythe, Eric Saubert and Tanner Conner.

They could still make a move to acquire a veteran or draft a rookie at the end of the month, but everyone would probably feel better about the position if they were entering the year with Darren Waller on the roster.

Georgia DL Jalen Carter will not be visiting the Commanders

This is no surprise considering Washington’s defensive tackles.

Jalen Carter is not going to visit any NFL team that is not selecting in the top ten.

Carter’s character has been called into question after he was involved in an incident of racing and reckless driving which resulted in two people in another car dying.

Carter has denied to police that he was racing but then pleaded no contest. The former Georgia Bulldog defensive tackle weighed in at 315 at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. Then only two weeks later, weighing in at 323, Carter struggled at times during his Pro Day workout.

His Georgia coach Kirby Smart defended his character, pointing to how Carter was injured against Oregon, then again against Missouri. “He probably could have shut it down. He decided to come back and play really for his teammates. I think that says a lot about his character in terms of what his competitive character is like and what he wants to do on the field for his teammates.”

Each team is permitted 30 visits of prospective draft selections excluding those from local universities or local players. Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has boldly proclaimed Carter will only visit teams slotted to draft in the top ten.

The Commanders own the 16th selection, and already having Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne signed for the next few years, it would be unlikely the Commanders would draft Carter, were he to fall back to 16th.

With Montez Sweat and Chase Young nearing the end of their contracts soon, the Commanders would more than likely choose an edge rusher before they would go inside tackle. Most analysts currently have them choosing an offensive tackle or cornerback at No. 16.

But notice how Rosenhaus is responding to the recent troubles of his client, Carter. Is he attempting a mental game to convince all teams drafting in the top ten they should want Carter? Is Rosenhaus creating a new draft floor for Carter? Is he is attempting to do all he can to prevent Carter from slipping out of the top ten?

Former All-Pro DT Gerald McCoy offers some smart advice to Jalen Carter

After Carter’s agent declared he wouldn’t work out for teams outside the top 10, McCoy chimed in with some smart persspective

Sometimes it takes someone who has walked along the pathway before to provide the best guidance for a player. In the case of Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter and his rocky path to the draft, he’s been offered some sage wisdom from an NFL great who recently reached the end of the path Carter is hoping to explore.

After Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, communicated via ESPN’s Adam Schefter that his client will only work out for teams picking inside the top 10 selections, longtime Buccaneers great Gerald McCoy chimed in with some smart perspective. McCoy, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft by the Buccaneers, thought that was a bad move by Rosenhaus and Carter.

McCoy, a player to whom Carter is sometimes compared, offered this smart response,

“Whether he is expected to be top 10 or not. His recent circumstance and his workouts this not smart. Also you never know who may want to trade up. Don’t assume with the draft. We’ve seen some crazy things happen.”

McCoy made the Pro Bowl every season from 2012-2017 and finished his career with 59.5 sacks. He last played in just one game for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.

Eagles grant CB Darius Slay permission to seek a trade ahead of free agency

Darius Slay is looking for a contract extension and with NFL free agency set to begin, the Philadelphia Eagles have given the Pro Bowl cornerback permission to seek a trade

Darius Slay wants a contract extension and with the NFL free agency period set to kick off, Eagles brass has given the Pro Bowl cornerback permission to seek a trade.

The league salary cap is expected to exceed $224 million in 2023, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and where things currently stand, Philadelphia is expected to have roughly $8 million in cap space.

The Birds are set to have 18 pending free agents, and with another likely retool schedule on defense, the organization could conjure up a scheme for more flexibility.

Philadelphia could free up $12 million by restructuring his current deal, but with the veteran looking past the 2023 season, Slay could wind up in greener pastures with more years.

RB Jeff Wilson hires Drew Rosenhaus, hopes to return to Dolphins

He was productive in his short stint with Miami last year.

At last year’s trade deadline, the Miami Dolphins sent a fifth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers to bring running back Jeff Wilson Jr. to South Florida for the remainder of the year.

During his eight games in aqua and orange, Wilson rushed for 392 yards and three touchdowns on 4.7 yards per attempt and another 94 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions.

Now, the 27-year-old is set to hit free agency for the second offseason in a row, and before he hits the market, he’s brought on new representation. According to the NFLPA, Wilson’s agent is now Drew Rosenhaus, who also represents Myles Gaskin, Jerome Baker, Tyreek Hill, Emmanuel Ogbah and Connor Williams.

Wilson told Sports Extra on Fox that he hopes to return to Miami this offseason to work with head coach Mike McDaniel and an offensive scheme that he’s been productive in.

With the success that both he and Mostert had last season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Miami be interested in one or both of their top free agent backs returning in 2023.

Raiders TE Darren Waller signs with new agent, returns to practice

Same day Darren Waller signs with new agent, returns to Raiders practice

There are coincidences. And then there’s those things that seem like too much of a coincidence to be a coincidence. Take the Darren Waller situation, for instance.

The Pro Bowl tight end has missed most of camp with what was being called a hamstring injury, according to reports. At least it was called that right about the time the media started to wonder if maybe he was not practicing because of his contract situation.

Waller has been looking for a new contract that would pay him closer to where he stands among NFL tight ends. To that end, he dropped his agent, Klutch Sports.

This morning Drew Rosenhaus announced he had a new client.

A couple hours later, Josh McDaniels was asked if he expected Darren Waller back soon and McDaniels — rather uncharacteristically — said Waller would be on the field for today’s practice.

“Darren’s good. Darren’s good to go,” said McDaniels. “So, you’ll see him today. I don’t really know about that whole (agent/contract) situation yet. But he’ll be out there today.”

Waller was indeed on the field with his teammates according to multiple accounts, suggesting just what McDaniels said; that he’s “good to go” as the team prepares for the season opener.

Whether that’s a healing situation or a contract confidence situation is up to interpretation. But I’d expect reports of a new deal will be forthcoming.

Drew Rosenhaus says his players love Mike McDaniel

Everybody seems like to the coach.

Since the Miami Dolphins brought on Mike McDaniel to run their team, players and coaches alike have come out of the woodwork to support the new head man in South Florida.

It seems that everyone who’s had an interaction with McDaniel talks about his infectious energy and vast football knowledge.

This week, McDaniel received some more praise from NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus during his weekly segment on WSVN-Fox 7.

“We represent multiple guys on the team, both offense and defense,” said Rosenhaus (transcribed by the Miami Herald). They love him. He’s made a great impression on the players. They really respect his knowledge. He has made an impression on the players that he’s a brilliant football mind.

“A lot of players have commented that it’s been tough — the workouts, the practices, the conditioning has been brutal. Maybe even tougher than what they’ve had in the past. McDaniel has made a great impression, but he’s also a guy who’s proving that he’s going to demand that players work extremely hard.”

According to Spotrac, Rosenhaus represents Tyreek Hill, Emmanuel Ogbah, Jerome Baker, Connor Williams and Sheldrick Redwine. Those are some great names to have backing the head coach

While, ultimately, McDaniel’s legacy will be decided when games are actually played, it’s good to know that he has support and belief from a number of his players before the season even starts.

Drew Rosenhaus: Dolphins have had discussions about Carlos Dunlap, Akiem Hicks

Both free agents could help make this defense even better.

The Miami Dolphins have done a lot to help improve their roster for the 2022 season, but most of their work has been on the offensive side of the ball.

Defensively, the only veteran that they added was Keion Crossen, who will be contributing mostly on special teams.

While the Dolphins did draft two linebackers in Georgia’s Channing Tindall and California’s Cameron Goode, general manager Chris Grier might be looking to add more veteran help.

According to WSVN’s Josh Moser, agent Drew Rosenhaus says that he and Miami have had discussions regarding free agents Carlos Dunlap and Akiem Hicks.

Dunlap, 33, played in all 17 games for the Seahawks in 2021, recording 35 total tackles (eight for a loss), 14 quarterback hits, 8.5 sacks, seven passes defended and one forced fumble.

Hicks, 32, played just nine games for the Chicago Bears last season. He recorded 25 tackles (five for a loss), nine quarterback hits and 3.5 sacks.

Either player would bring talent and veteran leadership to a defense that already has a fair amount of both. Signing either wouldn’t be necessary, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to have more productive players on that unit.

According to Over the Cap, the Dolphins currently have $20.22 million in cap space that they could use in a number of ways.

Drew Rosenhaus ‘would not be surprised’ if Deshaun Watson is a Dolphin

Drew Rosenhaus ‘would not be surprised’ if Deshaun Watson is a Dolphin

The Miami Dolphins are coming off the heels of a thrilling preseason victory over the Cincinnati Bengals to close their preseason schedule — but the rumor mill looms large over the Dolphins and what the next several days and weeks will bring to South Florida. Dolphins head coach Brian Flores was stern in his postgame press conference when asked about the ongoing rumors that tie the Miami Dolphins to embattled quarterback Deshaun Watson; who is facing accusations from over 20 separate women related to sexual assault.

Flores’ message?

“I’m interested in the players on the Miami Dolphins.”

But here’s the thing: Flores was asked if he would “feel comfortable” saying that the Miami Dolphins are not interested in acquiring Watson. A simple ‘no’ could have put lots of this speculation to bed. Speculation that has found new momentum in the past few days after a report from Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports indicated the Dolphins were the “favorite” to trade for and acquire Watson.

Reported interest of Watson in Miami has been sourced to a number of different outlets, including well-respected local beat writer Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

You can now include NFL super agent Drew Rosenhaus among those who can foresee the Miami Dolphins doing the unthinkable — trading to acquire Watson with his current off-field allegations ongoing and no clarity on the truth behind the very serious allegations leveed against him. Rosenhaus took to WVSN 7 News for his weekly segment and went so far as to say he “would not be surprised” to see Watson as a member of the Dolphins for the first game of the regular season.

“The Dolphins are absolutely working on this deal with the Texans. There is obviously holdups with compensation — they want three first round picks, plus. It’s not going to happen while (Watson) has an uncertain legal future. The Dolphins have to make sure that they have contingencies in the event that these legal issues become a serious problem. But I do think there’s a legitimate possibility that the Dolphins will acquire one of the best players in the NFL in Deshaun Watson,” — NFL agent Drew Rosenhaus via Josh Moser of WVSN 7 News

While the NFL regular season feels like it could be the barrier that puts these rumors to bed once and for all in 2021, it seems as though Miami is going to continue to be tied to Watson for as long as he’s available via trade.

Browns TE David Njoku once again fires his agent

Njoku immediately demanded a trade from the Browns after hiring Rosenhaus a year ago

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbw33aqtym0ft0g player_id=none image=https://brownswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Browns tight end David Njoku has fired his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, and returned to his old representation, re-hiring Malki Kawa, per Camryn Justice of WEWS-5.

Normally it’s not a huge newsworthy event when a player parts ways with his representation, but Njoku’s status and history are a different story. Njoku switched from Kawa to Rosenhaus in the summer of 2020 and immediately demanded a trade from Cleveland. The trade demand was later walked back by Njoku and Rosenhaus when it was clear the Browns were not going to acquiesce to the oddly-timed demand.

Njoku is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract. The 2017 first-rounder will be a free agent following the season and figures to be one of the top tight ends on the market.

Per Justice, Kawa lashed out at Rosenhaus while welcoming Njoku back into the fold:

It’s unclear how the agent change will immediately impact the chances Njoku remains with the Browns beyond 2021, but dumping Rosenhaus should be seen as increasing the odds.
