Sooner Magic runs out: Oklahoma loses heartbreaker to Missouri Tigers

Oklahoma Sooners fall to 5-5 on the season with their loss to the Missouri Tigers on Saturday night.

This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccuracy.

The Oklahoma Sooners let their bowl hopes slip away in the final two minutes of their dramatic matchup with the Missouri Tigers, losing 30-23 in Columbia on Saturday night.

A defensive battle defined a 9-3 first half. The Sooners were carried by the leg of Zach Schmit and the punting and passing ability of Luke Elzinga. Oklahoma had an opportunity in the red zone after Elzinga hit Bauer Sharp on a pop pass that went for 47 yards and gave the Sooners a first-and-goal at the 10. A delay of game followed by back-to-back sacks ended the touchdown threat, and the Sooners were forced to settle for three.

In the second half, the Sooners started to let the game slip away.

Missouri took advantage of a failed fourth-and-1 by the offense and drove down the field. Despite a pair of negative plays, including a forced fumble by Damonic Williams that Missouri quarterback Drew Pyne recovered, Theo Wease took a screen pass 13 yards for the go-ahead score.

After the two teams traded punts, Jackson Arnold hit Deion Burks for what looked like a third-down conversion, but Burks fumbled the ball, putting the defense back on the field. Missouri converted three third downs on the ensuing drive and took a 16-9 lead on Pyne’s touchdown pass to Brett Northfleet with Billy Bowman in coverage.

But Oklahoma answered with a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to tie the game on Taylor Tatum’s throwback to Jackson Arnold. That drive was highlighted by the fantastic running of Xavier Robinson, who carried the ball seven times for 48 yards on the drive and added a reception for seven yards. He picked up three first downs on for the Sooners to lead OU to the red zone and set up Arnold’s touchdown reception.

Then it looked like Sooner Magic had struck again. Missouri’s lead running back, Nate Noel, was stripped by Samuel Omosigho, and the ball popped out of the pile. Billy Bowman was ther to pick it up cleanly and race to the end zone for the touchdown with two minutes remaining to play to give OU a 23-16 lead.

And that should have created a moment for the Sooners defense to close it out. But Missouri and Drew Pyne needed just 57 seconds to drive 75 yards to score the game-tying touchdown. Pyne hit Wease for 28 yards on first down to put the Tigers on the OU half of the 50. The Sooners overcame a weak holding call on Woodi Washington to put Pyne and the Tigers in a third-and-16 situation after an R Mason Thomas sack and an incompletion.

With OU rushing three and dropping eight into coverage, Missouri triple-teamed Thomas, and Pyne lofted a ball down the sideline to Luther Burden, who was open after cornerback Jacobe Johnson fell down in coverage. That gave Missouri first-and-goal at the 10-yard line. Two plays later, Pyne hit Wease on a fade route in the corner of the end zone for the game-tying touchdown.

Still, there was 1:03 remaining on the clock, and the Sooners had two timeouts. A defensive pass interference on Deion Burks gave the Sooners a first-and-10 at their own 30-yard line. Xavier Robinson picked up five yards to put OU in a manageable second down. Arnold dropped back to pass and, when he didn’t throw it right away, was flushed to his right. as he attempted to evade pressure, he was hit, and the ball popped out of his hand. It was picked up by Zion Young, who ran it back for the game-winning touchdown.

It was a devastating turn of events for the Sooners in the final two minutes as they gave the game away with one of their worst defensive drives of the season and then a turnover that’s become the theme of the season for the offense.

It was another horrible performance for the Sooners offense. They gained just 257 yards of total offense, 47 of which came on the fake punt. Arnold was 15 of 24 for just 75 yards in the game, averaging just 3.1 yards per attempt on the day. Robinson finished the day with nine carries for 56 yards. Making his return to the field, Deion Burks led the Sooners in receiving with five catches for 44 yards before leaving the game late due to what looked like a concussion on what could have been a targeting call.

Oklahoma now sits at 5-5 on the year, with games against Alabama and LSU coming after their bye this week. There will be a lot of soul-searching for Brent Venables and his staff as they try to bounce back from a demoralizing defeat at the hands of the Missouri Tigers.

Notre Dame Football: Drew Pyne Through the Years

Photos of former Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne as he now heads to Missouri to continue his college football career.

It’s been quite the ride for former Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne.

Pyne committed to the Fighting Irish back in April of 2018 before enrolling and being a part of the 2020 team that wound making the College Football Playoff.

Pyne helped save the day against Wisconsin in the 2021 game at Soldier Field and after an injury to Tyler Buchner, started the final 10 games of the 2022 regular season that saw the Irish go 8-4.

After that regular season he transferred however, spending last fall at Arizona State.  He re-enrolled at Notre Dame this semester to take classes and reports have him on the move again as he’s headed to Missouri to continue his football career.

Below are some of the best photos of Drew Pyne during his time at Notre Dame from 2020-2022 when he threw for 2,257 yards and 24 touchdowns in 17 games.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne on the move again

The third change for the former Irish quarterback

Although former Notre Dame quarterback [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] showed he can play at the highest level, he has yet to find a permanent home.

The Connecticut native started his career in South Bend, before transferring to Arizona State this past season. The idea behind the move was to be able to get more playing time, but that didn’t happen as Pyne attempted just 49 passes on the year.

The Sun Devils have at least two quarterbacks above him on the depth chart, so Pyne looked to the portal again to find a new home. He will return to the Midwest as on Sunday it was announced that he will transfer to Missouri.

Pyne will take full advantage of the super-Senior status, as he will have three years of eligibility remaining in Columbia. Most likely he won’t be QB1 entering the season, as the Tigers starter Brady Cook returns, but he could be the backup this fall and then take over the starting job in 2025.

Another former Fighting Irish quarterback returning to Notre Dame

He’s baaaaaaack! (sorta)

Earlier this offseason came the news former Notre Dame starting quarterback Tyler Buchner was returning to campus. Briefly Alabama’s starting quarterback, Buchner will return to South Bend to play lacrosse for Notre Dame but not football.

Add a second former starting quarterback to the list of people returning to Notre Dame but not playing football. This time its former Notre Dame starting quarterback Drew Pyne.

Pyne started much of the 2022 season after Buchner was hurt in the season’s second game. He transferred to Arizona State this past year. He played in two games, threw two touchdown passes and threw three interceptions.

According to Pete Thamel, Pyne will return to school to graduate but has no plans to be a part of the football program.

Is Notre Dame’s quarterback room getting better?

Seeing as two former starters are back on campus with eligibility remaining but with no interest in playing football, it certainly seems that is the case.

Regardless, welcome back No. 10!

Drew Pyne (leg injury) will start at QB for Arizona State against USC

Pyne was injured last week, but is healthy enough to play. ASU coach Kenny Dillingham said he will start. Pyne faced USC last year with Notre Dame.

Drew Pyne, the former Notre Dame quarterback who played well against USC last November with the Fighting Irish, transferred to Arizona State in the offseason. He will now get the chance to start another game versus the Trojans.

Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham said that Pyne will start this game. Pyne suffered a leg injury last week against Fresno State. He had been dealing with a hamstring injury for the past month. He suffered that injury in August preseason camp. Over the course of the week, Pyne’s leg injury healed enough to give Dillingham confidence that Pyne can start.

Dillingham could be reacting to the prospect of having to start fourth-string quarterback Jacob Conover. It will be interesting to see how mobile and functional Pyne is in the first few possessions of the game. If he physically struggles, Conover would be next in line to replace him.

ASU has Jaden Rashada, the Day 1 starter, out with an injury. Second-string quarterback Trenton Bourguet, who started last week against Fresno State, is also out.

Social media reacts to Notre Dame QB Steve Angeli’s first TD pass

Congrats, Steve!

Buried on Notre Dame’s depth chart in 2022, [autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag] surely wondered whether he would get to shine beyond the Blue-Gold Game. Now, with [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] and Tyler Buchner gone, he is firmly in the role of [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag]’s primary backup. With the Irish possessing a 35-3 halftime lead, Hartman had done enough. That meant Angeli would run the offense in the second half.

While it took most of the third quarter for it to happen, Angeli finally got the first touchdown pass of his collegiate career. After [autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] lost 4 yards on a run, Angeli threw to Price on the next play after avoiding defensive pressure, and Price took the ball 40 yards to the house:

Angeli will remember this moment for the rest of his life. Perhaps he also will remember [autotag]Clarence Lewis[/autotag]’ 33-yard interception return for a touchdown that happened immediately after. Either way, it was a memorable sequence of events.

We’ve seen impact plays from Lewis before, so let’s focus on how social media reacted to Angeli’s big moment:

Notre Dame football: Former Irish starting QB update at Arizona State

Drew Pyne, Notre Dame’s starter for much of 2022 is now at Arizona State. An update to the start of his Sun Devils career.

It was a year ago that Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne was thrown into the fire when starter Tyler Buchner left the Marshall game with a shoulder injury. The injury kept him sidelined the rest of the regular season.

Pyne did a fantastic job, considering his abilities, and he helped the Irish to an 8-2 finish in the regular season after an 0-2 start.

Pyne entered the transfer portal following the regular season however and soon after announced he would attend Arizona State. Unfortunately for Pyne, he will not start for the Sun Devils to begin the fall.

According to On3:

Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne had been the favorite to win the job but sustained a hamstring injury Aug. 12, which led to the competition since then essentially being between Rashada and junior Trenton Bourguet, who made five starts for ASU last season.

Arizona State kicks off the 2023 season, its first under new head coach Kenny Dillingham, on Aug. 31 against Southern Utah.

Breaking: Notre Dame quarterback enters the transfer portal with a caveat

He might be leaving, he might not

When [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] persuaded quarterback [autotag]Sam Hartman[/autotag] to commit to the program, many wondered what [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag]’s next move would be.

There were thoughts it would lead to his leaving, but Buchner stuck around for spring practice and looked to be second on the depth chart behind Hartman.

A rough Blue and Gold game for the rising junior once again had many pondering his intentions. Now we know, Buchner has entered the transfer portal.

Injuries have plagued Buchner since he was a junior in high school, hurting his development as a passer. His improvement in that area was the biggest source of excitement for many last Saturday, but his play was the same old story for the quarterback.

The good news is Buchner has left the door open for a return to the Notre Dame program. He will explore his options. If there isn’t a fit, we could once again see him in Blue and Gold.

If Buchner does opt to go, it leaves the Irish very thin at quarterback behind Hartman. Remember, [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] transferred to Arizona State last December.

[autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag] would be the presumed backup and early enrolling freshman [autotag]Kenny Minchey[/autotag] would be third on the chart. Not the ideal situation for head coach [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag].

Notre Dame Football: Transfer portal tracker for 2022-23

Who do you most want to see Notre Dame bring in via the portal?

Whether you like it or not, the transfer portal has taken college athletics by storm and changed the landscape of college sports forever. Notre Dame has experienced this in recent years. It has had players exit and players arrive via the portal.

So who is leaving Notre Dame via the portal in 2022-23? We’re keeping you up to date on who enters the portal, where they end up and who Notre Dame lands via the portal this offseason.

Here are all the Notre Dame players to enter the portal since the start of the 2022 season. Those who transfer into Notre Dame will be tracked as well.

Tale of the Tape: Starting QBs – Tyler Buchner vs. Spencer Rattler

A familiar name gets the ball for the Irish in this one.

Notre Dame fans didn’t think they would see [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] for the rest of the season, let alone in the Gator Bowl. But with Buchner healed from an early-season injury and Drew Pyne off to Arizona State, the time has come for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] to trust the man who won the starting job in training camp.

Sadly, we can’t have a complete picture of what Buchner will bring to this game because we haven’t seen him play for three-and-a-half months. Nevertheless, he surely hoped to be leading the Irish in a bowl game at the start of the season, and that hope will come to pass.

Unlike Pyne, Spencer Rattler feels he owes it to South Carolina to play in this game, and he might be entering the NFL draft. Just look at these numbers, and all signs point to him being ready for the next step. That alone gives him the edge in this matchup, though anyone can see that already. The Irish’s defense definitely will have its hands full, and [autotag]Al Golden[/autotag] knows it.
