Former Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne finds his new home in the Pac-12

We wish Drew the best

We knew it was coming but not sure where former Irish quarterback [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] would land. When he quickly put his name into the transfer portal after the regular season finished, his intentions were made known to everyone.

Today, Pyne has found his new home, he’s off to [autotag]Arizona State[/autotag] to be a Sun Devil. It was a quick decision for Pyne after making a visit to their campus this past weekend. He will head off to a program with a brand new head coach in [autotag]Kenny Dillingham[/autotag] and one who won just 3 games this past fall. With three years of eligibility remaining and a fresh start with a new coaching staff, Pyne pulled the trigger.

Fortunately, it won’t be hard to imagine what he will look like in an ASU uniform, their colors are fairly close to what the Irish don each Saturday. We wish him the best of luck.

247Sports: ‘Things have been relatively quiet in the QB market with Notre Dame’

Not the best news, but not the worst

The Irish need to add another quarterback ahead of the 2023 season. [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] has already entered the portal and even though [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] is healthy for the [autotag]TaxSlayer Gator Bowl[/autotag], the need is still there to add another sign caller.

The news that we would have liked to hear was that they are trending towards one of the elite quarterback, but unfortunately according to a report by 247Sports Chris Hummer, “things have been relatively quiet in the quarterback market with [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag], but that doesn’t mean the Irish aren’t shopping.”

What it means to me, is that no one is currently buying, as Hummer has linked former [autotag]Texas[/autotag] quarterback [autotag]Hudson Card[/autotag] to the Irish “but here are some other QB options that could end up popping up down the line.” He also mentioned [autotag]Devin Leary[/autotag] as an option but it looks like [autotag]Kentucky[/autotag] might be the leader for the former [autotag]NC State[/autotag] quarterback.

As [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and offensive coordinator [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] continue to try and sell quarterbacks on what [autotag]Jack Coan[/autotag] did two seasons ago as a transfer, we continue to take the wait-and-see approach with the Irish’s pursuit of a transfer quarterback.

Notre Dame-South Carolina rated highly according to ‘bowl watchability’

Fair ranking?

The Gator Bowl between Notre Dame and South Carolina will be interesting to watch for a variety of reasons. Irish fans will want to see how their team functions without [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] or [autotag]Michael Mayer[/autotag]. Gamecocks fans will be interested in whether their team can finish its season by winning four of its last five. For everyone else, this bowl ranks eighth on the watchability list, at least according to Eddie Timanus of USA TODAY:

“Clemson fans can be forgiven if they give this one a pass, but for the rest of the country, this clash of spoilers should be of interest. There is also bust potential either way, however, as neither team was especially consistent this season. The Gamecocks were red-hot over the last month, but the Notre Dame defense should give QB Spencer Rattler a challenge. Fighting Irish QB Drew Pyne is transferring out, so a ground-and-pound approach seems likely.”

The important thing for the Irish will be if Marcus Freeman can finish his first full season at the helm strong. Also, perhaps there will be a preview of 2023 in the form of an unlikely star beginning to emerge. Regardless, this game is not perceived as boring, at least not compared to most other bowls.

Mike Golic, Jr.: ‘Tommy Rees coached his *** off this year!’

Mike Golic and Mike Golic, Jr. joined Fighting Irish Wire to talk all things Notre Dame football. Check it out –

It’s been just over a year since [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] left for LSU and [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] was named the 30th head coach in the storied history of Notre Dame football.  There have been ups, downs, and seemingly everything in-between these last 12 months as it was an 8-4 season that won’t soon be forgotten by any Notre Dame fan.

So how do you evaluate the year and the extreme highs coupled with a few of those lows that it brought?  I’ve sat here and done that since September and not that I won’t continue to do so, but figured it’d be good to get a different couple of voices to share their thoughts.

Mike Golic and Mike Golic, Jr. both continue to work in the football media world and thanks to their partnership with Chili’s, were able to join me to discuss the state of Notre Dame football a year into the Freeman era.  Here is what they had to say:

Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne enters the transfer portal

Drew Pyne played brilliantly vs USC, but that didn’t change his larger situation at Notre Dame — not enough, at any rate.

Fighting Irish quarterback Drew Pyne intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal. The third-year signal caller will have three years of eligibility at his next destination.

Pyne started 10 games for Notre Dame this season, leading the Fighting Irish to an 8-2 record.

Pyne is a 6-foot, 205-pound quarterback from New Canaan, Conn., who was a four star quarterback coming out of high school.

Drew Pyne finished the season with 2,021 passing yards to go with 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.

I expect Pyne to be highly sought after especially in a pro-style system, Expect teams like Wisconsin, Boston College, Stanford, Arkansas, Tennessee and many more to go after Pyne in the offseason.

Pyne did commit two turnovers against USC, and those two mistakes played a big role in helping the Trojans beat the Irish. However, over the course of 60 full minutes, Pyne played really well in the Los Angeles Coliseum, far better than even the most optimistic Notre Dame fan was expecting. He didn’t throw an incomplete pass in the game until the fourth quarter. He was consistently accurate with his throws, and he generally made the right reads against USC’s secondary.

Notre Dame football: Compelling quarterbacks continue to enter transfer portal

Which quarterback do you want Notre Dame to focus greatest on in the portal?

The Monday following the conference championship games in college football suddenly has the feel of national signing day all over again,  In a way, anyway.  Just instead of young men declaring where they’re going to play football, they’re instead saying their services are open for those interested.

Notre Dame is certainly a team that will be interested in adding a quarterback through the portal.  [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] announced he’s entering it, and the lack of experience at the position for 2023 is a concern.  Who will Notre Dame target?

We have a running tracker of each quarterback to officially enter the portal.  As of this posting, there are nearly 60 names in it – go ahead and check it out or there will also be a link to it at the bottom of this post.

Here are a handful of names that are officially entered that may be competing to start in 2023 at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame football: 5 things to know for Dec. 3, 2022

What a Friday it was from start to finish…

Welcome to college football’s championship weekend.  If you missed Friday night then you missed a fun one. Utah went on a 44-7 run to beat USC. 47-24. The loss certainly ends USC’s hopes for the College Football Playoff while Ohio State appears back in. We’ll know more as Saturday progresses.

Friday was a huge day for the future of Notre Dame, however. The big news came early in the afternoon when Drew Pyne announced he was entering the transfer portal. No, not after the bowl game. Right away.

Pyne’s decision along with USC’s loss are just a two of the five things you need to know for Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022.

Notre Dame football: Teammates & fans react to Drew Pyne transfer news

How Notre Dame and college football fans reacted to the huge news!

There were stories I was expecting to write on Friday and there was one I certainly didn’t expect to be hurrying to post. That of course was the stunning news that Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne is entering the transfer portal, and, according to reports, will not play in the Irish’s bowl game.

Listen, as shocking as it is, it makes sense. Everyone and their mother seems to know Notre Dame is going to be a player for a quarterback in the transfer portal because of Pyne’s limitations. Are we going to act surprised that after a year in the spotlight, he’d be thrilled to take a backseat to a new starter?

Pyne will not go down as a Notre Dame legend by any means, but he will be a folk hero that should be received well decades from now. As the Irish officially turn to the portal, here is how the college football world reacted to Pyne’s huge announcement.

Shocker: Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne enters transfer portal

DID NOT see this coming!

We have expected all along that Notre Dame would be trying to find a quarterback via the transfer portal this off-season.  What we didn’t expect was that the quarterback that started the majority of their games this season would be entering it.

That is however the case as Notre Dame quarterback [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] announced he’s entering the portal early Friday afternoon.  Pyne started 10 games for Notre Dame in 2022 as the Irish went 8-2 in his starts.  He clearly had a limited ceiling as a collegiate quarterback but seemingly had the backing and support of his locker room.

Here is how Pyne announced the move on Friday:

Pete Sampson of The Athletic reports that Pyne will not play in the bowl game.  That means that Notre Dame now will either look to [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag], who may be ready to return by then, or freshman quarterback Steve Angeli, to lead them in their upcoming bowl game.

This is a shocker that only adds to Notre Dame’s lack of experience at the quarterback for 2023 as things currently stand.

Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire for more as we’ll have more on this huge story.

Notre Dame loses quarterback to transfer portal

The Irish will surely now look to the portal to fill this spot

After losing the battle during the spring and preseason, [autotag]Drew Pyne[/autotag] was behind [autotag]Tyler Buchner[/autotag] to start the season. After Buchner went on to injure his shoulder in the second game and be forced to miss the remainder of the season, Pyne was elevated to the first-string quarterback.

Pyne played well, throwing for 2,021 yards with 22 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions. He led the Irish to an 8-2 record as the starter but it apparently wasn’t not enough for Pyne to return for his fourth year in South Bend. Today, the third-year sophomore decided to enter the transfer portal and continue to play his football at a new destination.

It doesn’t come as a surprise to me that Pyne has entered the portal, especially with Buchner expected to return to full health and be the starter. The fact that the Irish were also looking into other transfer options also must have weighed heavily on his mind as well. We wish Pyne the best of luck at his next destination.
