Drew Peterson makes the most of his NBA opportunity with the Celtics

Drew Peterson is showing signs of being able to create an enduring pro basketball career. Many people didn’t think he would get this far or last this long.

It has certainly been a wild ride for former USC guard Drew Peterson since his career in Cardinal and Gold came to an end. After playing his final game as a Trojan in March of 2023, Peterson was not selected in that year’s NBA draft. He briefly signed with the Miami Heat, but was quickly waived and assigned to their G-League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Peterson impressed during his time in Sioux Falls, enough so that the Boston Celtics signed him to a two-way contract last December.

Peterson spent the majority of last year with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G-League affiliate. However, he did appear in three games for Boston during their run to the title and received a championship ring in October for his contributions.

With the Celtics dealing with injuries early on this season, Peterson has had the opportunity to get some legitimate minutes for the big league club. Against the Cleveland Cavaliers (in Cleveland) in a recent matchup of the Eastern Conference’s top two teams, Peterson played 25 minutes, by far the most of his NBA career to date. He impressed during his opportunity, scoring eight points while also recording four rebounds.

Two days later against the Miami Heat, Peterson once again saw significant action, logging 26 minutes. Again, he made the most of it, racking up seven points, seven rebounds, and an assist.

When the Celtics get healthy again, Peterson will likely find his way back to the bench, if not Maine. But his performances in recent weeks were an encouraging sign, and showed that he could have a legitimate future in the league.

Drew Peterson on re-signing with the Boston Celtics on a two way deal

He also talks about his goals for the second deal he’s earned with Boston.

The Boston Celtics elected to bring back two way swingman Drew Peterson last week in the same role for the 2024-25 NBA season ahead, but what has he been up to since?

In a recent interview with CLNS Media, Peterson reacted to signing a new contract with the Celtics, and looked back on his first year with the team shuttling to and from Portland. He also talks about his goals for the second deal he’s earned with Boston, and hitting four shits from beyond the arc in the Celtics’ recent Las vegas Summer League win vs. the Los Angeles Lakers.

On the Boston Celtics re-signing Drew Peterson to a two way deal

The Boston Celtics offseason checklist just got a little closer to being completed.

The Boston Celtics offseason checklist just got a little closer to being completed, with the team electing to bring back small forward Drew Peterson on a two way deal to fill one of their three two way slots for the coming 2024-25 NBA season.

Peterson was always likely to return in such a role after Boston made him a restricted free agent earlier this offseason, signaling to rival ball clubs that they would do what it takes to hang onto to the developing 3-and-d swingman. Now, they have an open regular roster spot and some two way slots to fill, though it is not out of the question that at least one of those slots may go unused to start the season. The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, broke down the move for Boston’s plans next season.

Celtics have signed Drew Peterson to two way deal for 2024-25

A career 38.5% shot from beyond the arc at the G League level, Peterson is an intriguing if still raw talent.

The Boston Celtics have announced that they have filled one of their three two way roster slots for the coming 2024-25 NBA season. The player in question is a familiar face for fans of the team, with the slot going to 2023-24 Celtics two way forward Drew Peterson.

Terms of the deal have not officially been made public, but the move shores up the Celtics’ development pipeline with a known commodity in terms of Peterson’s play. At the NBA level last season, the University of Southern California alum put up a solid 3.7 points per game with Boston in 3 games played. And at the G League level, Peterson logged 12 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game over 4 appearances.

A career 38.5% shot from beyond the arc at the G League level, Peterson is an intriguing if still raw talent that could conceivably play his way into an NBA role in the next season or two with luck.

Boston still has guard JD Davison pending as a two way unrestricted free agent, and could bring him back — or go another way with his and the third open two way spot Boston has left to fill for this season to come.

Former USC Trojans basketball star Drew Peterson advanced to the NBA Finals with the Boston Celtics after their 4-0 sweep of the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals. He isn’t playing any minutes for the Celtics, but Peterson nevertheless gets to enjoy the ride on a team which will play deep into June and will be part of the last game of a marathon NBA season.

After spending two seasons at Rice and three at USC, senior forward Drew Peterson averaged 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game, posting a .442/.358/.752 shooting line in 33 games (35.9 MPG) for the Trojans.

Celtics Lab 238: A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called.

And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season.

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell.

Drew Peterson’s mom gave him a huge assist after joining the Celtics

The Boston Celtics latest two-way player had a helping hand from his mom after he made the jump from the G-League.

The Boston Celtics recently signed Drew Peterson to a two-way contract after waiving Nathan Knight. Peterson had been impressing in the G-League with Sioux Falls. However, his opportunity with the Celtics didn’t come without its challenges, most notably how to get his clothes from Dakota to Boston while also being present with his new team.

That’s where Peterson’s mom, Stacey, came to the rescue. Upon finding out Drew had been given an opportunity in Boston, she flew from her home near Chicago all the way to Dakota, where she loaded a van full of her son’s belongings and began the eight-hour drive to Boston, as reported by Adam Himmeslbach of The Boston Globe.

“There was obviously no time to get back to Sioux Falls to retrieve his other belongings, so his mother Stacey helped take care of that,” Himmelsbach reported. “She flew from her family’s home near Chicago to Sioux Falls, loaded a rental car with as many of her son’s things as she could fit, and then made the nearly eight-hour drive back to Chicago.”

Peterson has already begun to make his presence felt with his new team.

During the Celtics’ blowout win over the LA Clippers on December 23, Peterson checked into the game for the final 2:33 of the contest, where he knocked down his only shot and impressed with his passing to create an assist for Lamar Stevens.

Under Brad Stevens, the Celtics have begun finding impactful talent via their G-League system, and there appears to be a direct route to NBA playing time. Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet both graduated from the Maine Celtics to the primary roster, and Neemias Queta appears to be next in line. As such, Peterson will likely believe he can also follow a similar trajectory.

Who is new Boston Celtics two way forward Drew Peterson?

What you need to know about the Rice and USC alum.

The Boston Celtics have made a relatively minor but intriguing move by signing 6-foot-8 forward Drew Peterson to a two way contract on Wednesday, filling the void left by the release of former Celtics two way big man Nathan Knight.

This decision comes after ex-Boston two way wing Jay Scrubb, who initially occupied the spot at the start of the Celtics’ 2023-24 campaign, suffered an ACL injury during the Celtics’ training camp. Peterson, a rookie out of USC and Rice at the NCAA level and most recently the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the G League, brings a unique profile to the team. There, he showed off versatility and strong all-around skills, particularly excelling as a shooter and rebounder who can pass the ball a bit.

CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning reacted to the signing after Boston waived two-way center Nathan Knight on Tuesday.

Drew Peterson signs deal with Boston Celtics

Congratulations to Drew Peterson!

The USC Trojans have quite a bit of talent on NBA rosters across the league. Now, one recent player has signed a deal.

Drew Peterson has inked a deal with the Boston Celtics, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. He has been playing with Sioux Falls in the G League and was originally signed to an undrafted free-agent deal with the Miami Heat.

The deal has been finalized. Peterson is expected to be with the Celtics on Thursday when they face Cleveland Cavaliers.

Oddly enough, the game comes against the Cavs, who have fellow USC alums Evan and Isaiah Mobley, both of whom have been playing well and have been an important part of the Cavalier roster.

Peterson was a big part of the Trojans over the past few years. He has performed well in the G League, averaging 15.2 PPG with 5.5 rebounds and over four assists.

Peterson’s value to USC is being magnified this season, with the Trojans struggling despite having top-ranked recruit Isaiah Collier on their roster. USC is missing Peterson’s reliable halfcourt defense and ball movement in what has been a painfully disappointing start to the 2023-2024 campaign.
