Recap: Auburn baseball explodes for 20-run win against Austin Peay

Recap: Auburn baseball explodes for 20-run win against Austin Peay

After suffering a blowout loss in Saturday’s game two of a three-game home series, Auburn returned the favor to A-Sun opponent Austin Peay by handing the Generals a 24-5 7-inning mercy rule loss.

Unfortunately, the loss on the diamond wasn’t even the worst of the day for Austin Peay, as the school failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament on the hardwood by losing to Stetson in the A-Sun Championship.

As for the baseball game, Auburn scored multiple runs in every inning. An 8-run third highlighted the rout. Auburn scored 7-more in the fifth to put the game completely out of reach.

Infielders Deric Fabian, Cooper Weiss, and Cooper McMurray all contributed 4 RBIs in the lopsided victory, while Gavin Miller led the way with 5 runs batted in. Every Tiger that stayed in the game for at least two at-bats touched home plate.

On the pitching side, Auburn coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] opted to go with a bullpen game instead of starting [autotag]Joseph Gonzalez[/autotag] after his recent struggles. The move worked, as   [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag], [autotag]Cam Tilly[/autotag], [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Ben Schoor[/autotag], [autotag]Konner Copeland[/autotag], combined for 7 innings of 5 run ball.

Auburn may have struggled on Saturday, but it will be happy with another series win heading into a Tuesday road test against in-state rival Troy.

Auburn baseball earns 30th win with drubbing of Ole Miss

Auburn’s offensive dominance continued Saturday as the Tigers complete the sweep in Oxford.

After outscoring Ole Miss, 24-6 in Friday’s doubleheader sweep, Auburn continued its offensive dominance on Saturday en route to another impressive win.

The Tigers used a 20-hit effort at the plate and a solid defensive day to defeat Ole Miss, 13-5 on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep at Swayze Field in Oxford.

Auburn (30-19-1, 14-13 SEC) set the tone early by jumping out to a 12-run cushion before the Rebels (25-26, 6-21 SEC) had a chance to answer. [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] and [autotag]Nate LaRue[/autotag] each plated runs on RBI singles in the top of the 2nd, and [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] smashed a solo home run in the 3rd inning to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage.

Auburn would go on to do their most damage in the 5th and 7th innings. The Tigers scored six runs in the 5th to go ahead, 9-0, with a [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] grand slam being the biggest blow of the inning.

Auburn added three more runs in the 7th inning to push their lead to 12-0. Irish got the inning with a solo blast, with [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] and [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] adding runs with two-out singles.

The Rebels finally cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the 7th by scratching four runs across. Bo Gatlin put Ole Miss on the board with a two-run double, and later scored on a two-run home run by John Kramer to cut the Tigers lead to 12-4.

Each team traded runs in the 9th inning to cap scoring. McMurray again would extend the Tigers’ lead with a sacrifice fly to score [autotag]Chris Stanfield[/autotag], and Ole Miss answered with a single by T.J. McCants to score Garrett Wood.

Every player in the Auburn lineup recorded a hit in the game, with five players recording three hits. McMurray led the team in RBI with five, while Foster and Irish each picked up two.

Starting pitcher [autotag]Christian Herberholz[/autotag] allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings. [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] earned the win for the Tigers by relieving Herberholz for 2.0 innings, where he allowed two hits and struck out one batter. [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] led the pitching staff in strikeouts with two.

Auburn returns to Plainsman Park to play one more game at home this season on Tuesday. The Tigers and Jax State will do battle on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT.

Auburn run-rules No. 1 LSU to win series

Auburn handed No. 1 LSU its first SEC series loss of the season.

The Auburn Tigers took control early against top-ranked LSU with a six-run first inning as they run-ruled the visiting Tigers 12-2 to pick up the series win Sunday at Plainsman Park.

It is Auburn’s third straight SEC series win and they are now 27-19-1 overall and 11-13 in conference play.

“I thought all three games, even our loss, our processes were good,” head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said. “We absolutely showed up in a big way today.”

After getting six runs of support in the first inning, Auburn starter [autotag]Christian Herberholtz[/autotag] shut down the vaunted LSU offense, allowing just two runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out four batters in his first win of the season.

“I felt great,” Herberholz said of his outing. “Strike one is huge. I think if you get strike one you can do just about anything. Strike one is the biggest strike for sure.”

“Just trust your stuff and let your defense work behind you,” Herberholz added. “It was a good feeling, being able to trust every pitch you have and trust your defense behind you. I just try to give it my all and give our team the best chance to win.”

The two runs are the fewest LSU has scored in a game this season and their 11 total in the series is also their lowest output.

After LSU led the game off with a home run Auburn was immediately threatening thanks to three-straight walks in the bottom of the first. [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] singled to tie the game up before consecutive walks of [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag], [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag], and [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag] put Auburn ahead. [autotag]Caden Green[/autotag] then singled home two more to give Auburn a commanding 6-1 lead.

Howell padded Auburn’s lead with a two-RBI triple in the fourth and then did the same in the sixth to make it an 11-1 game. He finished the game with five RBI and two triples.

“Yeah, it was an unbelievable weekend,” Howell said. “Our fans were unbelievable, me and my close friend graduating, it’s been a great weekend.

“This team has always fought,” Howell added. “That’s been a staple of our program ever since Coach Thompson took over. We’re fighters. Now we’re just doing it with a little bit of precision and skill that we’ve acquired. We’re just continuing to fight and give everything we have.”

[autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] relieved Herberholz in the sixth and was nearly perfect. He allowed just one hit in three innings of work up pick up the save and give Auburn the opportunity to run-rule the No. 1 team in the country.

They did just that in the eighth when [autotag]Bobby Pierce[/autotag] was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Pierce advanced to second on a groundout by Irish before LSU intentionally walked Ware.

McMurray made them pay with a hard grounder off the first base bag that got away from the fielder and drove in Pierce to end the game.

“I’m standing right there with them so I know when they’re connected, and it’s nice that we hooked it up,” Thompson added. “We’ve done an amazing job at figuring out who we are, getting marginally better in a couple spots and staying together. That’s what we have to do moving forward.”

Auburn will return to action Tuesday when they faceoff with Samford at the Hoover Met. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. CT.

Auburn’s late rally falls short in game two loss to Mississippi State

The Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the 9th inning, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win.

Saturday’s middle game of Auburn’s series with Mississippi State got off to a quiet start, and it seemed as if the Tigers would remain in control for the remainder of the contest.

But a series of wild events would turn a casual Saturday into an offensive clinic that ended with Mississippi State rising victorious, 11-10 to even the series.

The Tigers held a 2-0 advantage through the first five innings of the game, but Mississippi State would blow the game open by scoring six runs in the 6th inning. They would also score three runs in the 8th, and two more in the 9th to take an 11-3 lead over Auburn as the Tigers headed into its’ final frame.

Despite digging itself into a deep hole, Auburn almost worked its’ way out of it.

Auburn would score seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the 9th inning to cut the Bulldog advantage to one run, but a late strikeout would leave the tying run on 3rd base, ending Auburn’s threat.

“The will is good. It’s the execution, kind of the same thing from the pitching side,” head coach Butch Thompson said following Saturday’s game. “Still, we got within striking distance, still fighting, and there’s still an opportunity to win a series tomorrow, which is very important for us.”

It was business as usual for [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag], as he put Auburn on the board by hitting a home run for the second straight game. His two-run blast in the 2nd inning would give Auburn a 2-0 advantage, which is one that they would hang on to for three innings.

As the game turned to the 6th inning, Christian Herberholz would turn things over to [autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag] after shutting out the Bulldogs over five innings, allowing just three hits and walking one batter while striking out four. Bauman walked two of the first three batters that he would face, which caused Thompson to call on [autotag]John Armstrong[/autotag] to get Auburn out of the jam.

That, however, would not work, as the Bulldogs would score four runs on his watch. The big blow would be a three-run home run by Slate Alford, which would be the final batter that Armstrong would face. [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] would end the inning, but he would see a blemish as well by giving up a two-run home run to Amani Larry to extend Mississippi State’s lead to 6-2.

Auburn would get a run back in the 7th inning on a [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] single that scored [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag], but the Bulldogs would catch wind again in the 8th and 9th inning to climb to an 11-3 lead. Kellum Clark and Luke Hancock each hit home runs over the final two innings, with Ross Highfill adding two runs in the 8th inning on a two-RBI double.

Auburn’s furious 9th-inning rally began with a leadoff home run by Howell and would grow after Tiger batters hit in five-straight at-bats with one out in the inning. Foster, [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag], and [autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] would score runs in the sequence to trim Auburn’s lead to 11-7.

Howell would contribute to the comeback once more with two outs in the inning, as his two-out triple would score three runs and clear the bases to bring the Bulldog lead to 11-10. In the next at-bat, [autotag]Ryan Dyal[/autotag] would strike out, which ended the effort.

Eight batters recorded a hit in the game for Auburn, with three batters recording two-or-more hits. Howell had the most success at the plate for Auburn, as he went 3-for-5 with four RBI.

Following Herberholz’s 5.0 outing, [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] and [autotag]Chase Alsup[/autotag] would be the only relievers to pitch at least one full inning. Nelson and Isbell combined to allow five earned runs, four hits, and four walks while striking out five batters in the final two innings.

Game three between Auburn and Mississippi State is set for a 1 p.m. CT first pitch on Sunday at Plainsman Park. The game will be streamed live on SEC Network+.

Auburn’s bullpen collapses in decisive game three vs. No. 3 Florida

Auburn surrendered 14 unanswered runs.

Auburn looked like it was going to pull off a massive upset over the No. 3 Florida Gators before the bullpen collapsed on the second straight Sunday. The Tigers had an 8-3 lead but the Gators scored 14 unanswered runs to take control of the game and win 17-8 in Gainesville.

Six Auburn pitchers combined to allow 17 runs on just 12 hits, but they walked 13 batters and hit three more. Auburn is now 18-9-1 overall and 3-6 in SEC play.

“We got right where we wanted to,” head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said. “We built that 8-3 lead and when I saw them run and catch us, just so many freebies to allow them to get back in the ballgame there.”

After allowing three runs in the first inning, Auburn starter [autotag]Tommy Vail[/autotag] was able to settle in and give the Tigers 4.2 innings. He allowed five runs, four earned on just two hits. He struck out six Gators but walked five and hit two more.

He left in the bottom of the fifth with two on and two out and Auburn leading 8-3. Thompson turned to [autotag]Chase Allsup[/autotag] to try and end the threat. He was unable to get an out as he walked the first batter, gave up a two-run single, and walked two more before [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] came in to end the inning.

Disaster struck Ibell in the sixth inning as he was forced to call for a trainer and leave the game. That forced [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] into the game.

He walked the first three batters he saw to make it an 8-7 Auburn lead before a sacrifice fly tied the game. He managed to escape the inning with the game tied but was unable to do so in the seventh. He hit the leadoff man and after a Wyatt Langford double put two men in scoring position Auburn once again went to the bullpen.

Jac Caglianome greeted [autotag]Konner Copeland[/autotag] with a two-RBI single to give Florida a 10-8 lead that they would not surrender. The Gators added two more runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Tigers fell behind 3-0 after one inning but immediately started chipping away. [autotag]Cooper McMurray[/autotag] blasted a solo home run in the second inning and the Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when [autotag]Caden Green[/autotag] hit a two-run homer and [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch.

They got some breathing room in the fifth when Peirce drove in Green and [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] smacked a three-run homer to make it an 8-3 lead.

The Tigers will return to action Tuesday night when they take on UAB at Regions Field in Birmingham. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. CT.

Auburn baseball picks up run-rule victory over UNA

Drew Nelson struck out seven batters in the complete game effort, while Ike Irish recorded four hits and five RBI.

A complete game from [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] helped the Auburn Tigers (17-7-1, 2-4 SEC) get past the North Alabama Lions (5-18) 14-1 in a run rule after 6.5 innings in the second meeting of the teams this season.

“We were locked in to start the game and just kept flipping the lineup,” head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] said after Auburn’s win on Tuesday. “I’m excited about that lineup and excited about Drew Nelson and his growth. He’s kind of steadied himself, stayed in there and worked himself up the past few weeks.”

Nelson was the starter for Auburn the only arm the team used, pitching all seven innings and picking up his second win of the season. He only allowed one run off of three hits, walked one batter, and struck out seven.

“It feels good. I was able to prove myself a little bit,” Nelson said. “I’ve always known I’ve had it, and it has been showing up here recently.”

The Tigers’ offense got going early and never stopped as [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first inning. Auburn added five more runs in that frame and proceeded to score in every inning except for the fourth.

[autotag]Ike Irish[/autotag] hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, a three-run shot that also scored Foster and [autotag]Bobby Peirce[/autotag].

Auburn will be back in action this weekend when the Tigers travel down to Gainesville, Florida for a three-game set with the No. 3 Florida Gators (22-4, 5-1 SEC). First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT on Friday and Saturday, then 12:00 p.m. CT on Sunday. All three games will be televised on SEC Network+.

Auburn halts late rally to defeat South Alabama

Kason Howell’s three-hit, four RBI performance helps Auburn erase a three-game losing streak.

After suffering a three-game sweep to No. 3 Arkansas to open the SEC slate, Auburn needed to find confidence ahead of this weekend’s series with rival Georgia.

On Tuesday, they found it.

Auburn gained comfort by scoring five runs in the middle innings to help them hold off a comeback attempt by South Alabama and ultimately earn the 6-5 win over the Jaguars at Riverwalk Stadium in downtown Montgomery.

The Tigers and Jaguars battled to a scoreless tie through 2 1/2 innings before [autotag]Kason Howell[/autotag] put his squad on the board, 3-0,  with a three-run blast to left field that scored [autotag]Carter Wright[/autotag] and [autotag]Brody Wortham[/autotag]. Howell would also contribute to his team’s lead again in the 4th inning on an RBI single.

“I’m kind of simplifying things and just trying to get a good pitch to hit, be on time and let the results take care of themself,” Howell said following Auburn’s win over South Alabama. “That’s really where I’m at right now and it’s working out. Hopefully, I can just be consistent with it and keep it going.”

Wright scored Auburn’s other run in the 4th inning on an RBI single that scored Justin Kirby to put the Tigers ahead, 4-0.

The game would then hit another lull before South Alabama’s Colson Lawrence hit his first of two home runs of the game in the top of the 7th inning. His first smack was a two-run blast that cut into Auburn’s lead, 5-2.

The Tigers got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when a foul out by [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] was deep enough to score Howell from third base, making the game, 6-2.

Auburn found themselves in trouble in the 8th inning, as the Jaguars attempted to take a late lead with two outs. Lawrence repeated his 7th-inning performance by hitting yet another two-run blast, and Cole Ketzner crushed a solo shot in the next at-bat to trim Auburn’s lead to 6-5.

[autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag] was able to slam the door on South Alabama by sitting down the Jaguars in order to close the game and solidify the win.

Howell paced the Tigers with three hits and four RBI, while Kirby and Wright each recorded multiple hits. Starter [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] got the win for Auburn by striking out two batters and allowing a hit in 4.0 innings of work. Isbell earned the save by tossing a perfect 9th inning.

Auburn improves to 14-6-1, and will now shift their focus to the Georgia Bulldogs, who come into town for a three-game series beginning Thursday night at 6 p.m. CT at Plainsman Park. The Bulldogs defeated Georgia State on Tuesday night, 8-3, behind a three-hit night by center fielder Ben Anderson.

Butch Thompson reveals Auburn’s opening day starter, weekend rotation

This pitcher is set to make his first collegiate start on Friday afternoon when the Tigers open the season against Indiana.

The season-opening series is a great time for a head coach to test several aspects out in order to construct the perfect strategy before SEC play begins in mid-March. Auburn head coach [autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag]’s first item on the agenda is finding his perfect weekend rotation.

Auburn returns just one weekend starter from last season’s College World Series squad, [autotag]Joseph Gonzalez[/autotag]. He is expected to be the anchor of the staff, but will not get the opening day start on Friday when the Tigers host Indiana to kick off a three-game series, but instead will be used on Saturday.

“(Gonzalez) threw game three for us on Sundays last year. He seems like the starter, at least in the past because of not having enough starters back, that can go the longest. We might like the second spot anyway,” Thompson said of Gonzalez’s role within the staff.

If Gonzalez’s slot is on Saturday, then who will throw the first pitch of the 2023 season? Thompson will hand the ball to sophomore right-hander, [autotag]Chase Allsup[/autotag].

Allsup was used in a relief role last season. In 23 appearances, Allsup struck out 36 batters and built an ERA of 3.38 in 29.1 innings of work. Thompson says that Allsup earned a starting role due to his efforts in the fall scrimmage with Alabama.

“He started our fall exhibition game against Alabama and was great,” Thompson said of Allsup. “He’s been hunting to get back there and I thought he was this past weekend.”

Thompson has announced that freshman left-hander [autotag]Drew Nelson[/autotag] will close out the weekend by starting Sunday’s game. Other pitchers that could see time in relief include [autotag]Tommy Sheehan[/autotag], [autotag]Chase Isbell[/autotag], and [autotag]Tanner Bauman[/autotag]. Thompson shares what he hopes to see out of his first time starters, Allsup and Nelson.

“Maybe Allsup goes four or five innings max. I would say the same thing about Nelson,” Thompson said. “I think it’s the way baseball pitching has grown at all levels.”

Auburn will be looking to replace the production of [autotag]Trace Bright[/autotag] and [autotag]Mason Barnett[/autotag] in the weekend rotation, Gonzalez and Allsup should slide into their roles easily. Both were members of the D1Baseball Top 200 starting pitchers list alongside freshman [autotag]Zach Crotchfelt[/autotag], who is expected to start next Tuesday’s game against North Alabama at Toyota Field in Madison.
