Former Colorado QB Drew Carter to continue college basketball career at Oregon

Remember Drew Carter? He’s now an Oregon Ducks basketball commit.

Former Colorado football quarterback Drew Carter isn’t giving up on his college basketball career just yet.

After spending last season hooping at UC Davis, Carter announced via Instagram on Friday his commitment to the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball program. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Oregon native will join head coach Dana Altman’s team as a walk-on guard, according to Ducks Digest.

At UC Davis this past winter, Carter saw 22 total minutes of action across nine games played. He finished the year with 11 total points, including six in UC Davis’ season opener against Jessup.

Carter spent two seasons with the Buffs as a backup QB, appearing in nine total games before entering the transfer portal in April 2023. Colorado men’s basketball head coach Tad Boyle welcomed Carter on as a walk-on during the 2021-22 session, although he never saw game action.

Boston Celtics fans didn’t really care about the in-season tournament — right?

How do we feel about the in-season tournament on the outside looking in?

NBC Sports Boston broadcaster Drew Carter and the NBA’s new in-season tournament (IST) are both new things to the fans of the Boston Celtics. For Carter’s sake, hopefully his tenure covering the Celtics goes better than Boston’s first run at winning the tourney did — a good start marred by a late fumble — but the NBC Sports color man took some time to talk about Boston’s play in the IST and more on a recent episode of the “First to the Floor” podcast after his own string start in his new gig has won over fans.

They also get into how the job has been for him so far and what it entails behind the scenes, what it’s like to walk in such big footsteps, and what he thinks of Boston’s season so far.

Celtics Lab 227: On Boston’s early trends 10 games into the 2023-24 season with Drew Carter

This pod, we dive into the early returns from the Celtics season so far, and how the gig is going for Boston’s newest broadcaster.

The Boston Celtics have now played over 10% of their 2023-24 NBA season, not quite enough to tell us all we need to know about this aspirant to the league’s 2024 title but enough that we have an idea about what sort of ball club they are and could become.

At the same time, over that stretch, fans of the storied team have gotten to know new Boston broadcaster Drew Carter. Maybe not enough to tell us everything worth knowing about the newest voice of the Celtics, but enough to give us a pretty solid idea of what to expect with him on the call, with New England’s notoriously icy fans already warming up to Carter in the booth.

So the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast decided it was a perfect moment to link up with the latter to talk about the former, as well as how the new job of following in the massive footsteps of Mike Gorman is going.

We get into everything from NBA expansion south of the border to Scal’s opinion of Drew on his first day on the job, so tune in for an especially fun episode as we take stock of the season so far and how the Celtics’ newest broadcaster sees it.

Meet new Boston Celtics broadcaster Drew Carter

Carter has big expectations to live up to as he steps into the role the retiring Gorman is stepping out of. And so far, he’s nailed it.

When it comes to the the immense expectations for the Boston Celtics this season given where the current iteration of the team is in its contention arc contrasted with the ball club’s storied history, new Celtics broadcaster Drew Carter has a similar perspective on following in the footsteps of the mighty Mike Gorman.

Among the most beloved broadcasters by any fanbase, Carter has his own mountainous expectations to live up to as he steps into the road role the retiring Gorman is stepping out of — and so far, the 26-year-old broadcaster has been nailing the landing with his new (dream) job. No small feat that, the new NBC Sports Boston broadcaster recently linked up with CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning for a special edition of the “Garden Report” podcast on the changing of the guard in the booth.

Former Buffs QB Drew Carter pivots fully to basketball, signs at UC Davis

Former #cubuffs backup QB Drew Carter is making a full move back to basketball

Two-sport athletes at the college level are no longer common sight with many programs asking for a nearly year-round commitment.

Drew Carter, however, managed to live that dream — at least to some extent — during his time at the University of Colorado. After joining the Buffs football program in the spring of 2021, the quarterback appeared in six games that fall before walking on to the CU men’s basketball squad early in the 2021-22 season, although he never managed to see game action.

Following another fall in Boulder as a backup QB, Carter entered the transfer portal in April, and on Friday, it was announced that he signed on to play basketball at UC Davis.

Carter was one of the top 2021 basketball recruits in the state of Oregon and was even a McDonald’s All-American West Region Nominee in 2021.

The UC Davis Aggies finished 18-14 (11-8 Big West) last season under head coach Jim Les.

Drew Carter, two others join transfer portal in mass Buffs exodus

Drew Carter and a pair of offensive linemen are among the latest Buffs to enter the portal

The Colorado Buffaloes football team has undergone a staggering number of changes this offseason. Shortly after the spring game, a flurry of Colorado players transferred out. Montana Lemonious-Craig was one of the biggest names to depart.

Now, offensive linemen Luke Eckardt, Yousef Mugharbil and backup quarterback Drew Carter have entered the portal, per Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede.

The Buffs have remained as a talking point, and they have added dozens of players, including Florida State transfer defensive lineman Derrick McLendon.

Despite a flood of rumors swirling around the players who left, the Buffs are still active on the market.

Eckardt is a freshman who was formerly at Arizona. Mugharbil transferred in from Florida earlier this offseason, but both will now look for opportunities elsewhere. Carter was in a logjam of quarterbacks, so his decision to leave Boulder makes sense.

As the spring transfer portal swirls and rumors fly about Coach Prime, we could see more and more players leave, although, with each passing day, the Buffs add talented players via the portal.

CU spring football: QBs Ryan Staub, Drew Carter meet with the media

A pair of Colorado QBs were at the mic on Saturday

There has been a bunch of attrition in the quarterback room for the Colorado Buffaloes. The biggest addition, on the other hand, has been Shedeur Sanders, who decided to join his father head coach Deion Sanders in making the move from Jackson State to Colorado.

CU will have the decision to make in the near future of who will be backing up Shedeur Sanders once the season begins. The two candidates that have been involved the most in camp so far include a true freshman and a holdover from last season.

Ryan Staub was the second player to commit to CU in the 2023 cycle and stuck with his commitment after the coaching change. Drew Carter is entering his third season in Boulder and has chosen to continue playing at CU as well through the leadership changes.

Both players took time after Saturday’s intrasquad scrimmage to meet with the media. Read on to see what each had to say:

Sean Lewis speaks on importance of QB depth for CU Buffs

Developing (or adding) QB depth behind Shedeur Sanders should be a priority heading into next season

Barring an unfortunate injury or unlikely transfer portal addition, Shedeur Sanders is going to be Colorado’s starting quarterback in the 2023 opener at TCU.

The Jackson State transfer stands well above anyone else in a Buffaloes’ QB room that currently includes returning backup Drew Carter, incoming freshman Ryan Staub and walk-on Colton Allen. Class of 2023 signee Kasen Weisman is also expected to join the program prior to next season.

Of those four behind Sanders, only Carter has taken college snaps. It would make sense for head coach Deion Sanders to add a more experienced backup QB from the portal but if that doesn’t work, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Sean Lewis has some developmental work ahead of him.

Following the Buffs’ third spring practice last Wednesday, I asked Lewis about the importance of QB depth behind Shedeur Sanders:

“They’re learning, they’re growing,” Lewis said. “It’s day three for everyone of live reps and me getting after them a little bit and pushing them to go. I need to see the mental errors go down and I need to see them value the football and maximize their calculated shots. It’s critical to have as much depth at that position across the board so that we can have as much competitive maturity within our offensive unit to have success, right? We all know how this game goes. You have injuries, you can’t predict anything. My last game at Kent State, we beat Buffalo with our fourth-string walk-on quarterback. We need to make sure that everyone’s ready to go with that next-man-up mentality.”

Utah at Colorado injury update: Buffs without starting QB JT Shrout, S Trevor Woods

JT Shrout and Trevor Woods are out for the Buffs

Colorado will be without starting quarterback JT Shrout and safety Trevor Woods for its season finale against Utah.

Shrout was not in uniform during pregame warmups and BuffZone’s Brian Howell tweeted that Woods is unavailable. Last week against Washington, Shrout took a few big hits and although he finished that game, he was clearly banged up. Backup Drew Carter or Houston transfer Maddox Kopp will likely both see snaps under center vs. the Utes.

Utah is also without a key player as running back Tavion Thomas announced he has played his final college game and will be declaring for the NFL draft.

Kickoff is at 2:10 p.m. on the Pac-12 Network.

Battle for Colorado’s No. 3 QB role is also worth following

Who’s your pick for Colorado’s No. 3 QB?

The biggest question for the Colorado Buffaloes is who will be the starting quarterback.

Will incumbent Brendon Lewis retain the starting job? Or will Tennessee transfer JT Shrout finally get his chance to run the show in Boulder?

For now, nobody knows who will be the starter. Moreover, there is some uncertainty on who will be the No. 3 QB as well.

As of Monday, Houston transfer Maddox Kopp, Drew Carter and freshman Owen McCown are the most likely candidates to win the spot.

Head coach Karl Dorrell opened up on what that battle looks like and admitted that McCown has a clear shot to the No. 3 job (h/t Brian Howell of Buff Zone).

“I think he’s playing well,” Dorrell said. “He’s in the discussion being in that third position role. Drew Carter’s competing in there, too, and Maddox Kopp.”

The next few weeks should iron out all of these question marks, and McCown made a lot of noise in high school, although Kopp made his way to Boulder for a reason and hopefully a shot at playing time in the future.

Dorrell and his staff have quite a bit to figure out, although it’s always a good problem to have too much talent on the roster.
