Dalvin Tomlinson ranked higher in free agency rankings than Dre’Mont Jones

The Browns got the better defensive tackle anyway

The Cleveland Browns may have been saved from themselves after the Seattle Seahawks offered to pay almost half of the contract of defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones up front. The Browns were deep into talks with Jones, but for a team that cleared just $22 million in cap space yesterday, the ability to give Jones nearly $24 million in year one was untenable. And that may be for the best as PFF has Dalvin Tomlinson, the defensive tackle they signed instead, as a higher-ranked player in NFL free agency anyway.

According to PFF, Tomlinson was their 18th-best free agent on the market, and this is behind players that did not hit the market like Geno Smith, Daniel Jones, Derek Carr, Saquon Barkley, Daron Payne, and Josh Jacobs. Of players who hit the market, Tomlinson was their 12th-ranked free agent. Jones falls four spots behind Tomlinson in this ranking. And the Browns got him for $2.75 million per year cheaper than the Seahawks signed Jones for.

Dre’Mont Jones: Contract details for new Seahawks defensive lineman

Details for new Seahawks DT Dre’Mont Jones’ three-year contract, according to Over the Cap.

The Seahawks made their first move of this free agent cycle a big one. Yesterday they agreed to terms with former Broncos defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones. When the news broke the contract was reported to be for three years and worth a total of $51 million.

That sounds like a lot, but those initial numbers can be deceiving. The details of the contracts are far more important than the total years and amount. For example, Geno Smith’s deal was reported to be three years for $105 million. However, a couple days later we learned that he only has a base salary of $25 million per year and only $40 million is guaranteed.

Now we have more details on Jones’ new deal, as well. According to Over the Cap, Jones has a 2023 cap hit just a little over $10 million and his base salary this year is only $3 million. The bulk of his payday came in the form of a $20 million signing bonus. Only that and the 2023 base are fully guaranteed, for a total of $23 million.

Here are the full contract details, per OTC:

Adding Jones is part of an ongoing major renovation of the interior defensive line. Shelby Harris and Quinton Jefferson are both reportedly being released and Poona Ford is about to become a free agent. Al Woods is still around for now but his contract makes him a potential cut candidate, as well.

So far in the NFL Jones’ numbers haven’t jumped off the page. However, the Seahawks are betting that the best is yet to come. At 26 years old, he’s already one of the most disruptive defenders at this position. Touchdown Wire has given Seattle an A- grade for the signing.

2023 NFL Free Agency: Seahawks releasing veteran DT Quinton Jefferson

Quinton Jefferson’s second stint with the Seahawks is coming to an end.

Quinton Jefferson’s second stint with the Seahawks is coming to an end. According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, Seattle is releasing the veteran defensive tackle.

Jefferson was originally a fifth-round pick by the Seahawks in the 2016 NFL draft. He played 39 games in four years then moved on to spending a year with the Bills, followed by a season with the Raiders before returning to Seattle in 2022. All together, Jefferson has appeared in 89 career games, totaling 20.5 sacks and 24 tackles for a loss.

By releasing Jefferson, the Seahawks are saving $4,485,000 in cap space, according to Over the Cap. They also incur a $2 million dead money hit.

They’ll need every penny because after the reported signing of Dre’Mont Jones (three years, $51 million) there’s not much left to go around.

Signing Jones and releasing Jefferson is part of what looks to be a major overhaul for the interior defensive line rotation. The team is also reported to be cutting Shelby Harris. Poona Ford will also become a free agent tomorrow.

Dre’Mont Jones: 4 takeaways from Seahawks’ surprise big free agent signing

So, what does it all mean?

The Seattle Seahawks are making a habit of disrupting our expectations. In last year’s draft they threw out the usual script of reaching for guards and off-ball linebackers and picked plus athletes at premium positions. That worked out pretty well for them, so now they’ve gone and scratched their normal MO in free agency, as well. Instead of waiting three days to sign a handful of mid-level players to relatively small deals they’ve opened their 2023 free agency with a bang, signing a high-impact defender for a ton of money on Day 1.

Last night it was reported Seattle is signing former Broncos defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones (who confirmed the news) to a three-year, $51 million contract. That’s an earth-shaking kind of deal for a front office that had never gone over $10 million per year for any outside free agents. So, what does it all mean? Here are four takeaways from the signing.

Free Agency Film Room: New Seahawks DT Dre’Mont Jones

The 26-year old Jones fits like a glove where this roster need the most help, though.

The Seattle Seahawks have broken with their free agency traditions in a major way. Not only have they shelled out big money for a high-end free agent, they’ve done it on the first day of the league’s legal tampering period. In case you missed it, Seattle has agreed to a deal with former Broncos defensive tackle Dre’Mont Jones. The contract is for three years and a total of $51 million, immediately making him the second-most expensive player on the roster outside of quarterback Geno Smith.

The 26-year old Jones fits like a glove where this roster need the most help, though. He can generate pressure consistently from the interior and make an impact lining up at multiple gaps. For what it’s worth, Touchdown Wire has given the Seahawks an A- grade for the signing.

Here are a few plays that show what Jones brings to the table for the Seahawks defense.

Seahawks to sign Broncos DT Dre’mont Jones to 3-year deal worth $51M

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to the terms of a major deal on Monday, planning to sign former Denver Broncos defensive lineman Dre’mont Jones.

Seattle Seahawks fans rejoice! In a rare move, the team has actually agreed to sign someone on the first day of the legal negotiation period.

Notoriously slow in the first wave of free agency, the Seahawks have now agreed to sign Denver Broncos defensive tackle Dre’mont Jones to a three-year deal, worth $51 million. According to NFL’s Ian Rapoport, Jones will receive $23.5 million this season.

Jones was originally selected by the Broncos in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Ohio State. He was ranked as one of the top-rated potential free agents this spring with 22 career sacks.

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar had the following to say about Jones’ style of play.

“The Seahawks under Pete Carroll have always had a knack for taking multi-gap disruptors and unleashing them on the rest of the NFL,” Farrar tweeted. “Dre’Mont Jones gives them their best such player since Michael Bennett in his prime. Sucks to be Chiefs RG Trey Smith on this rep.”

Seahawks to give DL Dre’Mont Jones a three-year, $51 million contract. Grade: A-

The Seahawks desperately need help along their front seven. They got that started in a huge way with the acquisition of ex-Broncos DL Dre’Mont Jones.

Under Pete Carroll, the Seattle Seahawks have had a knack for taking potential multi-gap disruptors, perfecting their games, and turning them loose on an unfortunate and unsuspecting NFL. Seattle has done it once again with an agreement to sign former Denver Broncos defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones to a three-year, $51 million contract.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network has the particulars.

Jones has the stuff to be the best such player for the Seahawks since Michael Bennett in his prime, which is as high as you can set the bar. It comes at a crucial time for the team, as everybody in the organization knows just how much the Seahawks need help along the front seven.

Jones has been an underrated pressure generator since the Broncos took him in the third round of the 2019 draft out of Ohio State, and he did the contract year thing perfectly with his best season to date in 2022. Jones amassed seven sacks, five quarterback hits, 33 quarterback hurries, and 25 stops in just 13 games — he missed the last four games of Denver’s season with a hip injury.

When healthy, Jones can attack from just about any gap at 6-foot-3 and 281 pounds, and he has some vicious pass-rush moves to glue it all together. On this sack of Trevor Lawrence in Week 8, watch how Jones (No. 93) started off on the edge aligned with Bradley Chubb, let right tackle Jawaan Taylor deal with Chubb, and just bulled right guard Brandon Scherff into the quarterback.

It wasn’t any easier for Chiefs right guard Trey Smith when Jones went to work on him in Week 14.

There was also this ridiculous play against the Jets in Week 7, when Jones started off in flat coverage, and had the athleticism and wherewithal to come back and take quarterback Zach Wilson down.

As long as health isn’t an issue, this is an “A” signing, but we’ll hold that in reserve for now.

Insider: Defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones excited about Browns interest

Mutual interest exists between the team and Jones.

Rumors continue to come out all over the place with the legal tampering period less than 24 hours away. Multiple outlets have reported that the Cleveland Browns are interested in bringing former Bronco defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones back to the Buckeye state.

Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot is now reporting that Jones has been excited to learn the team has an interest in him.

“’I’ve been a Browns fan all of my life, since zero up until I got to college,’ he said. His family and friends would be over the moon if he landed back in The Land.”

Could this mean that Jones would take a little less guaranteed money to go play for his childhood team? Pairing Jones, who can play inside and outside, with Myles Garrett would be a drastic improvement over the 2022 defensive line.
