Celtics done making moves for 2022-23 after adding Mike Muscala, will turn to buyout market

The Celtics have an open roster spot and can offer the most money of any contending teams with their $3.2 million disabled player exception the ball club received after the Danilo Gallinari injury last offseason.

Per the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, the Boston Celtics were done making moves ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline after obtaining Oklahoma City Thunder vet big man Mike Muscala, their sole move for the day.

Boston sent out a pair of second-round picks and the contract of reserve forward Justin Jackson to get the deal done. Jackson is likely to be waived by the Thunder. Now, per Himmelsbach, the team plans to turn its focus on what is likely to be an exceptionally deep class of buyout options after one of the busiest trade deadlines in recent league history.

The Celtics have an open roster spot and can offer the most money of any contending teams with their $3.2 million disabled player exception the club received after the Danilo Gallinari injury in the offseason.

Expect Boston to focus on wing players such as the previously-connected Alec Burks, who reportedly has mutual interest with joining the Cs if an agreement can be reached with his current team, the Detroit Pistons.

Report: Boston Celtics will likely look inward to address Gallinari’s injury absence before adding players

If Boston does use a potentially granted disabled player exception, it will not be in a hurry per reports.

The Boston Celtics might be able to use a disabled player exception (DPE) to sign or trade for a player making up to $3.2 million in the wake of the Danilo Gallinari injury news. That is, of course, if the team applies to the league for the exception, as the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach reports they likely will.

Don’t expect Boston to be in a hurry to find a player to use it on, though, if the league grants an exception.

According to the Globe reporter’s sources, “second-year forward Sam Hauser, a 6-8 sharpshooter, will have an opportunity to grab a spot in the regular rotation with Gallinari out.”

Himmelsbach’s sources also expect Grant Williams to pick up some of the slack.

Additionally, the Globe writer adds Boston may “make further tweaks to account for Gallinari’s absence” after seeing “how things unfold at training camp, where veteran frontcourt players Noah Vonleh, Bruno Caboclo, Luke Kornet and Mfiondu Kabengele will battle for opportunities.”

Boston Celtics now eligible for a disabled player exception (DPE) of up to $3.2 million after Gallinari injury

Unlike the two traded player exceptions Boston already has on their roster, Boston could only use it on a player in the last year of their current contract.

The Boston Celtics will be eligible for a $3.2 million disabled player exception (DPE) in the wake of the news veteran forward Danilo Gallinari will all but certainly miss the 2022-23 NBA season after tearing his left ACL, per ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

The exception can be used to sign a player up to that amount or to absorb a player’s salary in a trade without sending anything back, but the Celtics will have to apply for the exception, as it is not automatically given to a team upon reporting a qualifying injury. It also has to be signed off on by a league-approved doctor. Given the normal range of return from such an injury, it would be almost guaranteed to be offered by the league.

Unlike the two traded player exceptions Boston already has, Boston could only use it on a player in the last year of his current contract as an additional limitation played on the DPE.

It also does not provide cap relief to the team using it, and the exception will need to be re-applied for next season if Gallinari finds himself unable to return next season as well.

Report: NBA grants Warriors a Disabled Player Exception after Klay Thompson’s injury

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the NBA has granted the Warriors a Disabled Player Exception after Klay Thompson’s injury.

Since the open of NBA free agency, the Golden State Warriors have been active with the additions of Brad Wanamaker and Kent Bazemore. The Warriors were also able to land Kelly Oubre Jr. in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

However, rebuilding a rotation without a player like Klay Thompson isn’t an easy task. To help, the Golden State Warriors applied to the NBA for a Disabled Player Exception.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Warriors have been granted a $9.3 million DPE due to Thompson’s season-ending injury.

The DPE will allow Golden State to sign a player to a one-year contract, trade for someone with one year left on their deal or claim a player on waivers with one year remaining. Any move the Warriors decide to make will need to be under the DPE’s $9.3 million amount. The $9.3 million total is the maximum value for a DPE.

The exception is set to expire on April 19.

Via @ShamsCharania on Twitter:

With several expensive contracts on the books and the first wave of free agency coming to a close, there’s a chance the Warriors opt to hold onto the exception until the season starts.

Having an option like the DPE will give Golden State the opportunity to monitor potential trades and the free-agent buyout market without a significant impact on payroll.

Although Thompson is slated to miss his second consecutive season with a significant injury, a roster with Steph Curry, Draymond Green, James Wiseman, Oubre Jr. and Andrew Wiggins still has potential. Adding another proven player with the $9.3 million exception could play a role in Golden State’s run back to the Western Conference postseason.
