Panthers reportedly received trade inquiry on Donte Jackson

The Panthers have reportedly received a trade inquiry on CB Donte Jackson.

If the Carolina Panthers are ready to make some deals ahead of this year’s trade deadline, they may be closer to holding a garage sale as opposed to going door to door.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the 0-6 Panthers could just let the moves come to them—as they are reportedly not in “full trade mode,” but are open to inquiries. In fact, they might’ve had one already.

Fowler writes:

The Panthers also have received an inquiry on cornerback Donte Jackson, who’s on a reasonable contract ($1.08 million base salary this year, with a $4 million base in 2024 along with $5.7 million in roster and per-game bonuses). But quality corners are hard to give up, so he’s considered less available than the other two [Wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. and safety Jeremy Chinn].

Jackson is currently on the second season of the three-year, $35.1 million extension he inked last spring. While he hasn’t exactly performed up to the pact, the former second-rounder is a relatively valuable piece to a depleted defense—especially one that was already paper-thin in its secondary.

So, it seems that the Panthers may have to be moved in order to move the sixth-year veteran and team leader.

4 key matchups for Panthers vs. Dolphins in Week 6

Donte Jackson and the rest of the Panthers’ secondary have a very tough task ahead of them in Week 6.

It’s been a brutal first five weeks of the season for the Carolina Panthers, who are huge underdogs once again. This week, they get the high-flying Miami Dolphins—who can put up points with the best of them.

So, if the Panthers want to have a chance to notch their first win of the campaign, especially against their dynamic hosts, something’s got to give.

Here are four key matchups for Week 6:

Report: Handful of Panthers players available on trading block

SI’s Albert Breer is hearing that a handful of Panthers are currently on the trading block.

With the NFL’s trade deadline just a few weeks away, the Carolina Panthers could be looking to position themselves for the long run. And according to one league insider, that long run may not include a few key names.

Sports Illustrated senior NFL reporter Albert Breer published his latest set of news and notes on Friday, which included an interesting nugget on the Panthers. Breer notes that Carolina, at 0-5, may be willing to part with some valuable assets in exchange for future draft capital.

The first name that pops up, of course, is outside linebacker Brian Burns. Breer writes:

Conversation there starts with Brian Burns. He’s up after this year and owed more than eight figures for the remainder of the season (prorated portion of his $16.01 million). But he’s also just 25 and plays a premium position. Last year the Panthers turned down an absolute haul (a 2023 third-rounder and first-rounders in ’24 and ’25) to get him. And the Panthers and Burns haven’t gotten close to striking a long-term deal.

A team trading for him could, of course, do a new deal with him, or franchise him in 2024.

With no long-term extension seemingly in sight, Burns is playing through the 2023 campaign on his fifth-year option. The two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher currently leads the team with 4.0 sacks and five tackles for a loss.

Breer then goes on to mention a trio of players who he believes may be on the trading block:

After that, there are three guys I’ve heard are available—safety Jeremy Chinn, receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. and corner Donte Jackson. Chinn is an interesting hybrid linebacker who’d fit some teams better than others, has lost playing time in the switch to Ejiro Evero’s scheme and is in a contract year. Marshall’s a second-rounder who has talent but has yet to really find his footing as a pro. And Jackson’s a really good corner who’s signed through 2024 at a reasonable price (about $4.2 million for the rest of this year and $10.6 million next year).

As the dangerous Miami Dolphins sit on deck for this Sunday, the Panthers are potentially staring down the barrel of an 0-6 start heading into their Week 7 bye. So, with the deadline exactly 18 days away, it may soon be time to make some moves.

Donte Jackson out vs. Lions in Week 5

The Panthers will not have CB Donte Jackson for their Week 5 matchup against the Lions.

If the Carolina Panthers are to pull off a major upset at Ford Field this afternoon, then they’ll need a number of factors to swing their way. And so far, they’re off to an advantageous start . . . kinda.

Cornerback Donte Jackson, the lone player who carried a questionable designation for Carolina into the weekend, will not be active for the Week 5 matchup against the Detroit Lions. Jackson’s absence adds to what’s already a banged-up secondary, which will also be without fellow cornerback Jayce Horn and safety Xavier Woods.

Rookie D’Shawn Jamison will start in place of Jackson, who is still nursing his shoulder injury. Sam Franklin Jr., for a second straight outing, will take the nod for Woods.

Jackson and Woods will be joined on the sideline by the following players:

  • RB Raheem Blackshear
  • LB Deion Jones
  • OT David Sharpe

Detroit will not have a favorable return from their injury report either. The Lions have ruled out two of their top offensive weapons in wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and running back Jahmyr Gibbs as well as standout rookie defender Brian Branch.

Here’s who’ll also be inactive for Detroit:

  • DL Brodric Martin
  • TE James Mitchell

Panthers Week 5 injury report: Donte Jackson questionable vs. Lions

The Panthers have listed CB Donte Jackson (shoulder) as questionable for Week 5’s matchup with the Lions.

The Carolina Panthers could be down yet another starter in its secondary.

The final injury report for Week 5 listed cornerback Donte Jackson as questionable for Sunday’s matchup with the Detroit Lions. Jackson—who has made “good progress” on his shoulder injury, according to head coach Frank Reich—was a full participant in Friday’s practice.

Unsurprisingly, starting safety Xavier Woods has already been ruled out of the game. Woods, who sustained a hamstring injury in the team’s Week 3 contest against the Seattle Seahawks, is expected to miss an extended period of time due to the setback.

As was the case in last week’s defeat to the Minnesota Vikings, Sam Franklin Jr. is likely to get the nod in place of Woods. Franklin Jr. accounted for the Panthers’ only touchdown in the 21-13 loss with a franchise-record 99-yard interception return.

Here’s the final injury report in its entirety:

Donte Jackson limited at Wednesday’s practice

The Panthers listed CB Donte Jackson, LB Frankie Luvu and RB Miles Sanders as limited participants from Wednesday’s practice.

After losing cornerback Jaycee Horn and safety Xavier Woods, the Carolina Panthers could ill afford to see another one of their starting defensive backs go down. But they did this past Sunday, and the setback has lingered into the week.

Starting cornerback Donte Jackson was listed as a limited participant for Wednesday’s practice session, just four days ahead of the Week 5 matchup against the Detroit Lions. The sixth-year veteran made an early exit from this past Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

Other than Jackson, the only healthy corners remaining in the locker room include CJ Henderson, Troy Hill, D’Shawn Jamison and practice squad member Sam Webb.

In a bit of better news, guard Austin Corbett (knee) and tight end Stephen Sullivan (hip) both made their returns to the practice field after missing the first four games of the season. Additionally, wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, who sat out in Week 4 due to a concussion, was not among those listed in the injury report.

Studs and duds from Panthers’ Week 3 loss to Seahawks

When he wasn’t signing autographs on Sunday, Panthers OLB Brian Burns was writing Geno Smith back—with a handful of QB hits.

The Carolina Panthers swung and missed for the third straight time to start the season, striking out to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3. And while the defeat came with its underwhelming showings, it also came with a few encouraging ones.

Here are the studs and duds from the 37-27 loss:

Best and worst PFF grades from Panthers’ Week 2 loss to Saints

According to PFF, Panthers CBs fell flat in their first game without Jaycee Horn this season.

Were this week’s Pro Football Focus grades as ugly as the game we got out of the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints last night?

Let’s take a look at the best and worst marks for the Panthers in their 20-17 loss:

4 key matchups for Panthers vs. Saints in Week 2

Saints WR Chris Olave will be a tough matchup for the Panthers, especially with CB Jaycee Horn sidelined. So, who has to step up on Monday night?

The Carolina Panthers fell into an unfortunate start to their 2023 season, tripping on a 24-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons last Sunday. But this time, they’ll be looking to chalk up a win in their second divisional matchup.

So, for that to happen, here are four smaller matchups they’ll need to lock up against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night:
