Prediction

Jazz 125, Knicks 104

Moneyline (ML)

There’s absolutely no value on the Jazz (-1000) moneyline and it’s hard to fathom the Knicks (+650) coming into Utah and scoring an upset. The Jazz are rolling right now with records of 9-1 straight up and 8-2 against the spread across their last 10 games. The Knicks struggle in the second game of back-to-backs, as they are 1-4 straight up and 2-3 ATS while allowing a whopping 119.6 points per game with a minus-17.6 margin of victory in those situations.

PASS on a moneyline play in Knicks-Jazz.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

On paper, this is a terrible matchup for the Knicks. The Jazz defense ranks sixth in opponent PPG and field goal percentage, and eighth in opponent 3-point percentage. The Knicks are 29th in PPG, 26th in FG% and 23rd in 3-point%. Long-distance shooting is a specialty for the Jazz—they are first in the NBA in 3-point%—and guarding the three is a weakness for the Knicks—ranked second to last in opponent 3-point%.

The Jazz should be energized by a home crowd they haven’t played in front of much lately—seven of the Jazz’s last 10 games were on the road. Also, both of the Knicks’ leading scorers in Morris and PF Julius Randle struggle historically against the Jazz. Morris averages 9.1 PPG, .303 field-goal percentage and three rebounds per game, while Randle averages 12.6 PPG, seven rebounds per game and .405 FG% (all below their career averages).

Bet JAZZ (-11.5, -125) to win by at least 12 points.

Over/under (O/U)

This is tight but I lean OVER 216.5 (-115) because of the Knicks giving up so many points in back-to-backs and the Jazz presumably being able to sink threes against them. Also, the Over has cashed in seven straight Knicks-Jazz games. It’s only a lean for several reasons, though. First, the combined Over/Under records of these two is 32-41. Second, the Knicks are unreliable, at best, offensively. Third, both teams have a 5-5 O/U record in their last 10 games overall.

Donovan Mitchell had a NSFW answer for his defense on Tyler Herro

Mitchell took the blame on Monday after allowing Tyler Herro to score nine points in the fourth quarter in a losing effort.

The Miami Heat held off the Utah Jazz on Monday night to win thanks in large part to a fourth-quarter resurgence from rookie Tyler Herro.

The 13th overall pick recorded nine of his 17 total points in the final period, including a sequence where he scored six straight points for the Heat on three consecutive possessions.

Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell was the primary defender on Herro for those possessions and was brutally honest on his performance defending Herro after the game.

He kicked my ass for three straight possessions. Credit to him. He capitalized on my poor defense and I take the blame for that. That’s on me. He kicked my ass for three straight possessions and I had to be switched off on him.

The period of time when Herro took over occurred at a crucial point in the game. The Jazz cut a 10-point deficit down to six as the Heat started missing several shots to allow Utah to stay alive. Herro then reeled off several buckets to hold off the Jazz and take the victory.

For his part, Mitchell finished with 13 points on 5-of-18 shooting from the field though he took full responsibility for his lack of defensive effort down the stretch. Leaders oftentimes take the blame in situations when it is needed as Mitchell did just that on Monday.

That lapse in defense by Michell likely won’t happen again.

Despite playing hard, Warriors can’t close out Jazz, losing 114-106

Despite a strong performance from Alec Burks and the Golden State bench, the Warriors couldn’t close out the Utah Jazz, dropping their 22nd loss on the young season, 114-106.

It’s beginning to turn into a running theme for the Golden State Warriors, wire-to-wire tight game against a favored opponent, but when it counts at the end, they cannot find a way to close.

The Warriors were without Draymond Green and Eric Paschall, while being a 13.5-point underdog in Utah, Golden State battled The Jazz into the final minutes. However, in the end, the talent of Donovan Mitchell and Bojan Bogdanovic willed the Jazz to a 114-106 win.

The game came down to three possessions, with a little over one minute left in the fourth quarter. Golden State was down two, and Willie Cauley-Stein missed a crucial dunk, that turned into an open three for Joe Inglis giving the Jazz a five-point cushion.

The following offensive trip for Golden State ended with Alec Burks stepping out of bounds, giving the Jazz the ball up-five, and only 60 seconds on the clock. The Jazz ended the game on an 11-two run to seal the 114-106 win. The Warriors have now lost 10 of their last 12.

The Marquese Chriss Show

After an impressive performance against the New York Knicks, Marquese Chriss parlayed his hot streak into Utah with another solid game. Chriss scored 12-points, but made a crucial impact on the boards, grabbing 13-rebounds— a career-high. All 23 minutes from Chriss turned up the energy for Golden State.

With little under a minute remaining in the third quarter, Chriss appeared to awkwardly make knee-to-knee contact with Emmanuel Mudiay in the final minute of the third quarter in Utah. Chriss hobbled to the bench in pain and quickly limped back into the visitor locker room with a knee contusion. Luckily for Golden State, Chriss promptly returned to the court.

Chriss has been one of the Warriors’ best surprises throughout the season, and now registering two-straight double-doubles, he’s earning more playing time.

Return of the Burk

The former member of the Utah Jazz, Alec Burks, brought it to his former team Friday night. Burks notched his seventh 20-point performance this season against the team that traded him in 2018.

Burks led all Warriors with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting.

Without Green and Paschall, Burks took over as the primary scorer in Kerr’s offense and thrived. Burks was getting to the bucket like a savvy veteran, even scoring on a turnaround bank shot à la, Tim Duncan.

Bench Mob

Despite being without Green and Paschall, the Warriors bench unit stepped up in Utah. Golden State’s bench dominated Utah’s second unite, outscoring them 52-12.

Damion Lee, Jacob Evans and Chriss all scored in double-digits, combining for 46-points, an impressive number for a thin unit away from home. Now somewhat healthy, bench players aren’t forced into playing time like earlier in the season. With fewer minutes available, the competition off the bench will get tighter as the year progresses.

Lakers in Utah to face out of tune Jazz who have lost four of five

The Los Angeles Lakers continue their three-game road trip on Wednesday night against the Utah Jazz, who have hit a rough patch.

After coming through with their most impressive win of the young season last night in Denver, the Los Angeles Lakers will look to complete the NBA’s most difficult back-to-back 2-0 as they are in Salt Lake City to take on a Utah Jazz squad with high expectations in the middle of their first rough patch of the season.

The Jazz are finally back home for a few games after ending their five-game road trip 1-4. The bad trip has put into focus some issues the Jazz have had to begin the season, such as the struggles of former Memphis Grizzlies guard Mike Conley and a slight drop-off in production from starting forward Joe Ingles.

Donovan Mitchell can still take over a game, but often he and Bojan Bogdanovic are asked to do everything for the Jazz offensively. On the flip side, their defense has taken a significant step back from the elite level they’ve been on for the last few seasons. According to Basketball-Reference, the Jazz are No. 10 in defensive rating after finishing in the top-three in the league in defensive rating in each of the previous three seasons.

However, the Jazz entered this season seen by many as a dark horse title contender. While they are in the midst of a bad stretch, the opportunity to come home and lick their wounds before hosting the best team in the West on a second of a back-to-back is the exact type of opportunity that can bring back belief in their season.

The HoopsHype Daily: The Jazz are looking more like a fringe playoff team than a dark horse contender lately

The Jazz have lost their last four games against playoff teams. At what point do we start to worry about them?

PANIC TIME IN UTAH? The Utah Jazz, once thought of as a dark horse title contender, are 1-4 in their last five games (all on the road) and have the NBA’s seventh-worst net rating in that stretch, behind “powerhouses” like Chicago, Golden State and Memphis. Things have gotten so bad recently that Utah trailed the Raptors by 40 (FORTY!) points at halftime of their game on Sunday. Even if we look at their season as a whole, however, and forget about their recent road trip, Utah has disappointed overall this season. For the year, they’re 12-9 and have a mediocre +1.2 net rating, the No. 13 mark in the league.

Particularly concerning has to be the play of their big acquisition from this past summer, Mike Conley. The former Grizzlies point guard is averaging 13.9 points per game, down from 21.1 last year, and shooting a paltry 36.9 percent from the floor, the third-worst mark in the league among players with at least 200 field-goal attempts.

🏦  Considering Conley is the 17th-highest paid player in the league, that level of production is unacceptable if the Jazz are going to make their usual second-half run this season. It’s unlikely Utah decides to do anything drastic (i.e., a major trade), at least not anytime soon, but if they continue down this path, they might need to do something to shake things up and find their previous years’ form.

LAST NIGHT IN THE ASSOCIATION: A 10-game losing streak ended last night while an 11-game win streak was extended.

😌 The Atlanta Hawks, losers of their 10 previous outings, finally got off the schneid last night, beating the lowly Warriors 104-79. Trae Young led the way for Atlanta with 24 points and seven assists.

🦌 Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks won their 12th game in a row, downing the Knicks 132-88. Yes, you read that scoreline correctly. The highlight of the night belonged to Giannis, who threw down this absurd dunk on Julius Randle. Antetokounmpo finished the contest with 29 points, 15 rebounds and three assists, so, all around, a pretty quiet game for him by his usual standards.

MAX FVV? ESPN’s Bobby Marks says a team told him they could see impending free agent Fred VanVleet landing a deal worth between $25 million and $30 million this summer. By the way, he meant that figure as an annual amount, not as the total worth of the deal, which is insane. VanVleet is an underrated floor general enjoying his best career campaign, averaging 18.6 points and 7.5 assists per game, but still… that’s a pretty rich deal for a player of his caliber.

📝 At the same time, it’s a very weak free agent class coming up, so players like VanVleet are going to get overpaid, there’s no doubt about it. On our end, we have the Raptors point guard ranked as the 14th-best free agent of 2020.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Giannis Antetokounmpo won Player of the Week for the East yesterday. Unsurprising. The winner out of the West, though, was a good bit more shocking, since the honor went to Carmelo Anthony, who averaged 22.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.7 triples last week. Pretty great comeback story so far for the future Hall-of-Famer.

THE WIGGINS RESURGENCE: Andrew Wiggins is having the best season of his career, and he credits Ryan Saunders, his head coach, for believing in him, as well as wanting to prove the naysayers on TV and social media wrong.

GEM UNLOCKED: The Miami Herald goes in depth on how the Heat were able to discover Kendrick Nunn, their current second-leading scorer, last year while he was coming off the bench for the Warriors’ G League team.

FRESH POD: Our very own Alex Kennedy is joined by NBC’s Tommy Beer to discuss the NBA’s ratings being down, the midseason-tourney idea, the Knicks’ struggles and Carmelo Anthony’s return.

PHILANTHROPIC CONTRIBUTIONS: Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins has started a program called Assists for Education, where for every assist his team makes this season, he’s donating $10 to help provide school supplies and clothing to area students.

RELATIONSHIP MENDED? Enes Kanter, formerly Knick owner James Dolan’s biggest hater, is now… defending his former boss. Kanter says they’re buddies now, that they text occasionally and that it’s wrong when people constantly blame Dolan for the Knicks’ troubles. Whatever you say, Enes.

RECORD-SETTER: Curious about what records LeBron James is set to break this season? Read all about it here.

AIR GIANNIS: Nike has huge plans for Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, and with good reason, too, as the Greek Freak is a major international superstar.

AWKWARD SNEAKERS: Thunder point guard Dennis Schroeder got bullied by multiple teammates, including former MVP Russell Westbrook, into changing the sneakers he wore for games. The sneakers in questions? Well, they were Kevin Durant XI’s, so… yeah. Makes sense.

Donovan Mitchell requested to swap jerseys with Ja Morant: ‘I’m a fan’

Donovan Mitchell and Ja Morant each swapped jerseys after playing each other on Friday night.

Donovan Mitchell is among the growing number of fans of Ja Morant.

The Utah Jazz third-year guard told reporters following Friday night’s 103-94 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies that he is a fan of Morant and respects his game. Mitchell also commended Morant for his ability to take over games late and take those important shots for his team.

Morant recorded 11 points and four assists in the matchup as Mitchell had 20 points. Morant also had a nice sequence against Mitchell after putting a dribble move on him before driving and dishing it to Jonas Valanciunas for the And-1 attempt.

The two teams each wore throwback jerseys in the contest as the Grizzlies paid homage to the Vancouver Grizzlies and their iconic teal uniforms while the Jazz wore their classic jerseys made famous by John Stockton, Karl Malone and others.

Given his electric playing style, Morant has been among the most exciting first-year players to watch this season. He has carried the Grizzlies at times and has taken over for them in several close matchups.

Donovan Mitchell and Utah stifle Warriors gritty comeback, 113-109

The Warriors clawed back into a hard-fought battle with the Utah Jazz, but in the end, Mike Conley and Donovan Mitchell were too much for the injury strapped dubs.

For a team that’s coming off a 48-point loss at the end of a week-long road trip, the Golden State Warriors gave as much effort as you could possibly ask for against the Utah Jazz.

The 15.5-point underdogs battled Utah for 48-minutes of the game. However, in the end, the talent of Donovan Mitchell and Mike Conley overpowered the grit of the understaffed Warriors.

The scrappy Dubs were able to cut down The Jazz’s 21-point lead to single digits in the final minutes, but the team couldn’t manufacture a bucket when it mattered, falling 113-109 in Utah.

When the game got close, the backcourt duo of Mitchell and Conley took over, combining for 57 of their team’s 113 points. Conley’s handling of the pick and roll with Rudy Gobert was a problem all night for Golden State’s lowly defense.

Utah shot 61-percent from the field in the first half and was able to stretch a two-point first-quarter lead into a 14-point lead heading into the locker room at halftime. The Warriors slowly scratched their way back into the game behind a flurry of 3-pointers from an unlikely hero.

Big man Omari Spellman dropped four-threes on four shots behind the arc, with all four coming in the fourth quarter. Spellman had one of his best nights in a Golden State uniform, totaling 18 points with five boards.

Seven players scored in double figures for the Warriors on a night where they only had eight healthy players, and none of them included Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, D’Angelo Russell, or Klay Thompson.

Undrafted rookie, Ky Bowman turned in another impressive performance as the Dubs primary ball-handler, scoring 17 points, with five assists and four steals. Bowman had a crafty steal that led to a powerful dunk to cut the Jazz lead to six with less than two minutes to play. Bowman is currently on a two-way contract, but has easily played his way onto the Warriors full-time roster for the 2019-20 season.

After a four-game road swing, the Warriors will now get a rare weekend off and hope for good news on the returns of Kevon Looney and Draymond Green. Both bigs could return as soon as Monday against Oklahoma City, providing a much-needed boost to the Warriors injury-riddled roster.

The Philadelphia 76ers took Markelle Fultz first overall out of Washington and it did not pan out for them in any way, shape or form. He is averaging a career-best 9.8 points per game this season, which tells you a lot. Fultz played in a grand total of 33 games for the Sixers before winding up in Orlando.

Eric Paschall jersey-swapped with childhood friend Donovan Mitchell

After growing up playing AAU basketball together, the two friends caught up with each other after the game on Monday and exchanged jerseys.

Golden State Warriors rookie Eric Paschall had his first opportunity on Monday night to play his childhood friend, and Utah Jazz guard, Donovan Mitchell.

The two grew up playing AAU together in New York and have remained close ever since. Prior to the beginning of the season, Mitchell even named Paschall to be his sleeper pick for the Rookie of the Year award.

“He brings so much to a team that’s ready to play now,” Mitchell said at the time. “He is a defender, he is athletic, he can shoot and he’s strong. He wasn’t like that when we were younger.”

Though it was Mitchell and the Jazz that walked away with the 122-108 win over Paschall, the two friends caught up with each other after the game and exchanged jerseys.

Paschall recorded eight points and six rebounds in 30 minutes off of the bench while Mitchell had 23 points in the contest. The two were briefly matched up with each other as Paschall held Mitchell scoreless on three shot attempts.

The game for the two friends was surely a special moment after playing with each other countless times growing up. After losing on Monday, Paschall will certainly have something to say the next time they play on Nov. 22 in Utah.
