WATCH: Dan Lanning tweets encouraging video with Oregon coach Don Johnson

Great to see Coach Don Johnson up with Lanning. Here’s to the best of luck in his continued recovery.

In the back of nearly every Oregon fan’s mind over the past couple of months has been the health of Ducks’ coach Don Johnson, hoping that he can make a speedy and full recovery from a medical emergency that was suffered earlier this spring.

Johnson had been in the hospital for quite a while following the medical emergency, and Oregon fans have only received limited updates as he works towards his recovery. The last we saw of him came on the night of the NFL draft when a video was released of Johnson celebrating the selection of Kayvon Thibodeaux, who went to the New York Giants with the 5th overall pick.

Now we are seeing Johnson up and standing alongside coach Dan Lanning, who appears encouraged.

There is still no word on the outlook for Johnson, or if he will ever get back into coaching, but at the moment all that is important is that he can get back to a normal life and have his health and happiness.

The NFL draft is always an emotional night when you consider the fact that a number of athletes are receiving life-changing news that they will get to play football at the next level.

However, after the new that Oregon Ducks superstar Kayvon Thibodeaux would be going to the New York Giants with the No. 5 pick in the draft, we got to see a reaction from coach Don Johnson, the Ducks’ Director of Player Personnel who is currently recovering from a serious medical emergency that took place earlier this spring.

Neither the university nor the family have released much information publically about what happened to Johnson earlier this year, but it’s been serious to keep him away from the program for several months.

Now, we are lucky enough to be able to see his reaction to the news that Thibodeaux was getting drafted on Thursday night.

“Yes sir!”

It’s unclear if Johnson will return to the Oregon program in the future and join the team once again, but right now we are focused on his health and giving him and his family time to heal and work towards his recovery.

In the meantime, it’s awesome to see videos like this.

Report: Oregon family is ‘cautiously optimistic’ as Don Johnson recovers from medical emergency

Don Johnson’s family offered some encouraging news about the health of the Oregon coach after a scary medical emergency this spring.

Earlier in the spring, the Oregon Ducks football team got a big scare when Don Johnson, the director of player personnel, suffered a medical emergency that landed him in the hospital.

Not much information about the situation has been reported publicly, but head coach Dan Lanning asked for support from the Oregon community, and an outpouring of thoughts and love for the coach came from social media, where fans offered strong words for the Ducks’ coach who is imperative to the football team.

A bit of good news was shared on Monday night, when Keenan Speer-Johnson, the son of Don Johnson, offered an update on the situation and said that they were “cautiously optimistic.”

At this point, it is unclear what Johnson’s future as a coach are, but we are focused solely on his well-being at the moment and hoping that he can get back to good health.

Everything Dan Lanning said after his first spring football practice with Oregon Ducks

Dan Lanning’s first official practice as a head coach is in the book. He had some positive reactions after the fact.

The first official practice in Dan Lanning’s head coaching career is now in the rear-view mirror. His first post-practice media availability is now over with as well.

I’m sure one of those things was much more anticipatory and exciting than the other, but both serve a great purpose in the fandom of college football.

While the Oregon Ducks went through their first spring practice on Thursday, we got a chance to see what this new era is going to look like. Of course, in the very limited time that media members got to observe, it was tough to find many major takeaways, but there were certainly some encouraging developments to make note of.

There were also a lot of notable things said by Lanning after the practice was over, where he touched on some of the players on the roster, the health of a few key people — including Director of Player Personnel Don Johnson — and what a few of his goals for spring practice are. Here’s everything Lanning said on Thursday.

The Oregon Ducks football program received a scare last week with Don Johnson, the Director of Player Personnel reportedly suffering a serious medical emergency that landed him in the hospital.

While there have not been any confirmed reports about the medical issue that he is dealing with, nor the severity of the issue, Oregon coach Dan Lanning took to social media last week to offer his thoughts and prayers for Johnson, who is battling through.

During Thursday’s media availability with Coach Lanning following Oregon’s first spring practice of the year, I asked the new coach if there were any updates on the situation that he could offer. Expectedly so, Lanning was unable to divulge into details, but said that there is no “new news” and he continues to hope and pray for his colleague.

As the Ducks continue to roll through spring camp and enjoy one of their biggest recruiting weekends of the year over the coming days, we will keep an eye on Johnson’s health and hope that he can get back onto his feet and return to the team in the future.

Coach Don Johnson rebuffs Miami to stay on at Oregon

According to reports, director of player personnel Don Johnson is staying on Dan Lanning’s staff at Oregon.

Everyone thought Oregon Ducks head football coach Dan Lanning’s first hire would be an offensive coordinator. But instead, Lanning didn’t waste any time retaining a current staff member.

Don Johnson, Oregon’s director of player personnel has accepted a multi-year deal in order to stay with the Ducks. According to reports, Johnson was offered the same position at Miami under former Ducks coach Mario Cristobal.

It’s a huge get for Lanning as Johnson has already shown his worth under the new regime. Johnson was instrumental in convincing running back/wide receiver Seven McGee to stay in Eugene.

Johnson is highly thought of in the coaching ranks and is one of the nation’s top recruiters. Keeping him on board is huge for the immediate and distant future of Duck football.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Terrance Knighton has been hired as a coaching assistant.

Knighton had a strong run in the NFL from 2009-2015, playing defensive tackle for the Jaguars, Broncos and Washington a total of 108 games. Since then, he’s been working as a coach.

In related news, David Newton at ESPN is reporting that Frank Okam has been promoted to defensive line coach, replacing the void left by Mike Phair’s exit.

The Panthers have now made these changes official, via the team website. They also announced they’ve hired Don Johnson as a pass rush specialist and Garrett McGuire as a coaching assistant.
