Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo in Dominican Republic to be restored by Jerry Pate Design

Jerry Pate Design will upgrade the playing surfaces and bunkers at a massive Dominican Republic resort.

Casa de Campo, the sprawling destination in the Dominican Republic with three resort golf courses, has announced plans to restore its Pete Dye-designed Teeth of the Dog layout starting in January of 2025.

Teeth of the Dog – named for the small, sharp rocks along the shore – is widely considered one of the best courses in the Caribbean. Opened in 1971, the layout features seven dramatic holes that play tight enough to the ocean to get a player’s socks wet. The course not only was built by the legendary Dye, he lived there with his wife, Alice, for years, and some of his ashes were spread on No. 8 of Teeth of the Dog after he died in 2020.

The restoration will be done by Jerry Pate Design, the company owned by the winner of the 1976 U.S. Open and the 1982 Players Championship. After that latter victory, Pate threw Dye into the water on the new Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass that Dye had recently designed.

Much of the work to be done at Teeth of the Dog is cosmetic. All tees, fairways and greens will be re-grassed with Dynasty Paspalum, which is ideal for seaside courses, especially one like Teeth of the Dog where ocean spray easily can blow onto the golf holes. The fairways will be sand-capped three inches deep, which promotes firm and bouncy turf ideal for golf.

Pate’s team also will expand the current greens back to their original sizes, with some slight recontouring. All greenside bunkers will be reshaped and expanded to flat bottoms with enhanced faces for a sharper, more dramatic look. Other work includes renovating the cart paths.

Work is expected to be completed by November 2025.

“I have long admired Pete Dye, as he was a creative genius who transformed the modern game of golf with his immense talent and imagination, and no course typifies that more than Teeth of the Dog,” Pate said in a media release announcing the restoration. “The layout is truly one of the best in the world, and our job is to preserve Pete’s lifeworks and put a bit more bite back into Teeth of the Dog.”

The resort’s other two Dye-designed courses will remain open to guests. The 27-hole Dye Fore course features many holes along incredible jungle cliffs above a river with long views down toward the ocean, while the 18-hole Links course plays through the center of the 7,000-acre property with wider fairways and tricky greens.

The resort as a whole is massive with a world-class marina, a smorgasbord of dining options, a wide assortment of activities ranging from shooting sports to the beach and one of the best beach bars in the world. The property includes an assortment of accommodations ranging from hotel rooms to luxury villas frequently rented by top celebrities.

The updates to Teeth of the Dog will be the first large-scale work to the course since it opened.

“We will miss Teeth of the Dog for most of 2025, but we are excited and honored to take Pete’s masterpiece to a new level and completely restore the integrity of his legendary course to new heights,“ Gilles Gagon, longtime friend of Dye and the golf director emeritus and senior director of golf sales at the resort, said in the media release. “With all the many years Pete and I worked together, I know he would be beyond pleased with the upcoming work to be done on the course that ignited his stellar career and legacy as one of the world’s premier golf architects.”

Watch: Lester Quinones hits smooth step back jumper for Dominican Republic in FIBA World Cup

Lester Quinones shook a defender with crafty handles before knocking down a smooth jumper for the Dominican Republic in the FIBA World Cup.

While Steve Kerr coaches Team USA in the FIBA World Cup, another player from the Bay Area is representing the Golden State Warriors in the Philippines with the Dominican Republic.

Two-way guard Lester Quinones is suiting up alongside Karl Anthony Towns in the FIBA World Cup for the Dominican Republic. With a run of three consecutive wins in Group A, Quinones and the Domincan Republic are headed for the second stage of the tournament.

In their final group stage win over Angola on Monday, Quinones showed off a smooth jumper. After shaking a defender with some crafty handles in the corner, Quinones let a crisp jumper fly to knock down a shot.

Via @FIBAWC on Twitter:

In 16 minutes off the bench, Quinones finished with seven points on 1-of-7 shooting from the field to go along with three rebounds in the Dominican Republic’s 75-67 win over Angola.

Quinones and the Dominican Republic will wait to learn their opponents in the second round of the tournament.

Karl-Anthony Towns celebrated with fans after Dominican Republic perfectly swept FIBA group play

KAT led the Dominican Republic to finish 3-0 during the first three games of the World Cup.

Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns enjoyed himself after the Dominican Republic advanced past group play in the FIBA World Cup.

Towns, the most notable American-born player with NBA experience who is not playing for Team USA, led the Dominican Republic to three consecutive victories to qualify for the second round of the tournament. He averaged 19.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists across the wins.

After the victorious third game against Angola on Tuesday, the Dominican big man was seen dancing and celebrating with fans at the Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines. It was an awesome moment shared between the star player and the fans who supported him.

Towns tweeted that these were the “best fans in the world” after the game.

This looked like a lot of fun for everyone involved but it wasn’t the only celebration we saw from Towns. In addition to celebrating on the court, the joy continued in the locker room as well.

He also showed off some delightful dance moves in the locker room with his teammates.

Towns and the Dominican Republic will play again on Sep. 1 against either Serbia, Puerto Rico or South Sudan depending on the results of Group B.

FIBA World Cup: Warriors’ Lester Quinones plays 15 minutes for Dominican Republic vs. Philippines

Jordan Clarkson fouled out after awful offensive contact in a tough Gilas loss at the FIBA World Cup

This was NOT an ideal foul for Jordan Clarkson.

Jordan Clarkson played well against the Dominican Republic, but it wasn’t enough to get the win in the opening match of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

It was a true thriller in the Manila Philippine Arena in front of 38,115 fans, which was the biggest crowd in FIBA World Cup tournament history. It beat the previous record by nearly 6,000 fans. Those in attendance got to watch a heavyweight battle between Clarkson and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Clarkson was indisputably the leader of the offense for the Gilas, scoring 28 points before eventually getting called for his fifth foul of the game. But he was called for his fifth foul late in the fourth quarter, which was deflating for the Philippines.

This was a really poorly-timed foul from Clarkson, who was clearly the glue to the offense for his national team.

The Gilas struggled to score in the closing minutes after Clarkson became ineligible and when it was all said and done, it was the Dominican Republic that finished on top.

Towns finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds, recording three offensive boards during the contest. It was his first official game for his national team since 2013.

Clarkson and the Philippines will next take on Angola on Aug. 27 and then Italy on Aug. 29. They will have a tough road ahead to get out of Group A and to potentially qualify for the 2024 Olympics in France, but they are still within contention.

Karl-Anthony Towns got ejected during a FIBA exhibition after sarcastically gesturing to the ref twice

KAT wasn’t happy!

During a tune-up match before the FIBA World Cup begins, Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns was ejected.

Towns, who is representing the Dominican Republic during the tournament, recently helped lead his national team past Canada in a previous scrimmage. But during a game against Spain, the three-time NBA All-Star was called for two technical fouls and was tossed from the match.

Below, you can watch the two possessions that led to the calls from the officials as well as the animated reaction from Towns that led to his dismissal from the contest. Needless to say, the former No. 1 overall pick was not at all happy.

After the ejection, the Dominican Republic ended up losing to Spain.

This reaction GIF should feel relatable for every time you’ve disagreed with an official about a bad call.

2023 FIBA World Cup: Canada concludes exhibitions with 94-88 loss to Dominican Republic

Full recap on Canada’s 94-88 exhibition loss to the Dominican Republic.

In their exhibition finale, Canada lost to the Dominican Republic, 94-88. Canada essentially used this game as a resting opportunity with several key starters only playing limited first-half minutes.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was limited to just 13 first-half minutes, where he had six points on 2-of-6 shooting, two assists and two rebounds. Due to him playing heavy minutes in the first four exhibition games and this being the second day of a back-to-back, Canada elected to pseudo-rest their star guard.

Lu Dort, on the other hand, had a busy night. In 16 minutes off the bench, he finished with 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting, five rebounds and two assists. He shot 1-of-6 from 3.

Exhibitions are now over. The next time Canada plays, it’ll be for the 2023 FIBA World Cup — which kicks off on Aug. 25.

Let’s look at instant reactions and highlights from Canada’s six-point exhibition loss to the Dominican Republic.

Miami Dolphins fan cruise set to sail in April

A chance to enjoy the Caribbean with a number of former Dolphins.

In the same year that the franchise celebrates the 50th anniversary of their 1972 perfect season, the party extends to sea in a memorable experience waiting for Miami Dolphins fans of all ages.

Not only will the cruise allow you to embark from Miami, but you will also be welcomed on the industry’s newest ship the MSC Seascape! In addition to some amazing amenities, ship features and activities, onboard will be a slew of 1972 Dolphins from the 17-0 “Perfectville” team.

Of course, when you see that word, you know the mayor of that town, Mercury Morris, will be on the cruise. The running back will be joined by his backfield-mate, the great Hall-of-Fame fullback Larry Csonka. Fellow champion Larry Little, another Dolphins Hall of Famer, will be on the Seascape as well.

In addition to the 1972 team, the most prolific Dolphin of them all, Dan Marino, will be there, as well as his top four all-time targets. The Marks Brothers, Clayton and Duper, as well as O.J. McDuffie and Nat Moore will all represent the aqua and orange on board. And, just in case anyone tries to get too, too close to No. 13, Richmond Webb and Dwight Stephenson will be there, so you know he’ll be protected from more than the sun.

If you’re of a certain age, and your Dolphins clock started in the 1990s, you’ll be thrilled to know that players like Louis Oliver, Terry Kirby, Shawn Wooden and Troy Drayton will be joining in the experience.

Fan favorites like special-teamer Larry Seiple and an original swiss-army-knife type in Jim “Crash” Jensen are among the 35 Miami Dolphin legends scheduled to be on the seven-night cruise. There will even be a Wildcat sighting with Ronnie Brown joining the fun.

Remember the famous “hook-and-lateral” play against the San Diego Chargers in 1981? You can watch Tony Nathan score in highlights, or you can get a chance to talk to him about it directly.

With outstanding food onboard, the culinary critics will be there making sure of it, as restauranteurs, Kim Bokamper and Bob Baumhower will be approving the menus. Bokamper and Baumhower are a few of the “Killer Bee” defensive players from the Dolphins’ 1980s teams, and throw in Bob Brudzinski, yet another owner of a sports restaurant, who’ll be taste-testing from deck to deck.

With the number of exclusive activities scheduled for the Dolphins Fan Cruise guests, on-ship and at certain destinations, you’ll have the opportunity to talk and vacation with heroes from players across the history of the Miami franchise that has seen five Super Bowls and two Lombardi Trophies.

Certainly, a likely pair to document parts of this trip will be Dolphin players turned broadcasters, Jimmy Cefalo and Joe Rose. Both were former receivers for Miami and are now popular media figures in South Florida. Rose is the host of “The Joe Rose Show” on WQAM 560 as well as the color man next to Cefalo, who’s the Dolphins’ play-by-play man on the radio. Bokamper is also part of the Dolphins broadcast team.

The cruise sails April 2-9, and, throughout the week, there will be countless activities, events and competitions with fellow fans and the Dolphins as you sail the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The ticket price includes all the special events with the Dolphins players, activities and competitions.

Some of the features include a welcome aboard party, player introductions and highlight reels, photo opportunities, basketball shootouts, quarterback competition, karaoke competition, trivia contests, a Talent show, and more. There’s even an ambassador program that can gain you access to super-VIP events with exclusive time and access to the players.

With a private island stop at MSC’s exclusive Ocean Cay beach in the Bahamas, as well as a private beach party with the Dolphins at another port-of-call in Nassau, you’ll also have destinations to look forward to in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

More legends are set to be announced in the coming days, so check the Dolphins’ website for the latest information.
