Bengals fan favorite Domata Peko now working with Cowboys

Domata Peko is working in the NFL now.

Former Cincinnati Bengals fan favorite Domata Peko is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys.

Not as a player, of course. But the longtime Bengals defensive tackle and one of the faces of the Marvin Lewis era is now helping out in Dallas alongside Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer, of course, was one of the big-name coaches who helped oversee things during that Lewis era.

Brandon Loree of Athlon Sports recently pointed out that Peko had shared some of his journey with the Cowboys on social media.

Last November, Peko served as the Ruler of the Jungle for the Bengals. He retired after the 2020 season and is now still working around the game with some familiar faces:

Domata Peko is Bengals’ Ruler of the Jungle vs. Steelers

Domata Peko is back to rule the jungle.

The Cincinnati Bengals have reeled in some major names in recent years to kickstart their “Ruler of the Jungle” tradition for big games.

This holiday season that will continue in Week 12 with the Pittsburgh Steelers in town. The Bengals have announced that modern fan favorite Domata Peko will rule the jungle before and during the AFC North clash.

Peko, a fourth-round pick in 2006 out of Michigan State, played in Cincinnati through the 2016 season and was a staple of many strong defenses — and especially a fan favorite when he made an appearance or two as a fullback.

Peko retired after the 2020 season and is the latest modern great to walk back through the doors for a special moment.

It turns out a former Cincinnati Bengals standout has a tie to the lottery ticket that just netted one lucky winner roughly $2 billion.

Joe Chahayed, owner of the Mobil gas station that sold the winning Powerball ticket, is the father-in-law of former Bengals defensive tackle Domata Peko.

Peko himself confirmed the new with an Instagram story, which we’ve provided a screenshot of below:

Chahayed, according to ESPN’s Ben Baby, will receive $1 million for selling the winning ticket.

Peko, of course, played for more than a decade in Cincinnati as a staple of the defensive line’s interior while sometimes moonlighting as a quite capable fullback for the offense on the goal line.

Cardinals free agent outlook: DL Domata Peko

He played six games late in the season. Could he return for a 16th NFL season?

One of the Arizona Cardinals’ many unrestricted free agents this offseason is defensive tackle Domata Peko. Will he be back in 2021?

Peko was a late-season signing last year after the team had practically every defensive lineman on injured reserve. The 36-year-old played in six games and had 16 tackles to close out the year.

He has now played in 15 NFL seasons.

He knows the Cardinals’ defense under Vance Joseph, having played for him as well with the Denver Broncos.

Peko is a perfect fit for the Cardinals if he wants to play. It gives them a veteran nose tackle who can start or who can come off the bench if Leki Fotu is ready to be the starter. He is well respected and works hard.

However, he is likely at the point in his career when he waits to sign with a team after the start of the season or late in the season, as he has done the last two seasons, waiting to sign with a team until November, joining a team with a chance to play in the postseason.

Because of the decreasing salary cap, while he would likely play for the league veteran minimum, he will likely go unsigned for a while.

Peko’s 2021 return: Unlikely, unless an in-season need appears

Cardinals officially announce signing of veteran NT Domata Peko

This will be his third stint with Vance Joseph on the coaching staff.

The move was expected last week but it is official now. The Arizona Cardinals have signed veteran defensive lineman Domata Peko to fill one of their two vacant roster spots.

He visited the team last week with the intention of signing but had to clear COVID testing protocol.

Peko is 35 years old and in his 15th NFL season. He spent his first 11 NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals after they drafted him in fourth round in 2006. He then spent two seasons with the Denver Broncos and then played last season for the Baltimore Ravens.

In his career, Peko has played 208 games (189 starts) has 599 total tackles (314 solo), 39 tackles for loss, 20 sacks, 49 quarterback hits, two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and 14 passes defensed.

He knows defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Joseph was a defensive backs coach for the Bengals in 2014-2015 during Peko’s final two seasons in Cincinnati. When Joseph became the head coach of the Denver Broncos, Peko followed him there, playing in Denver for two seasons.

Cardinals host veteran NT Domata Peko, who could replace Corey Peters

Peko played for Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph with the Denver Broncos.

The Arizona Cardinals have lost veteran defensive lineman Corey Peters for the rest of the season to a knee injury. That leaves a large void on the defensive line. He will be the fourth defensive lineman on injured reserve.

They apparently are looking to replace him with another veteran.

According to the league transaction report, Domata Peko, who turns 36 this month, visited the Cardinals. He has played 14 years in the league, most recently for the Baltimore Ravens in 2019.

He played for the Denver Broncos in 2017 and 2018 when Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was head coach there. He knows the defensive system. Assuming he intends on signing, he would not be able to play Thursday night when the Cardinals take on the Seattle Seahawks because of COVID testing protocols. However, he should be available for their game in Week 12 against the New England Patriots.

Peko has 600 career tackle and 20 career sacks.

5 DTs the Ravens could sign now after pulling Michael Brockers offer

The Baltimore Ravens aren’t going to sign DT Michael Brockers which leaves them with a big hole to fill. These five names could be an answer

With the Baltimore Ravens pulling their offer from free-agent defensive tackle Michael Brockers, it puts the team in an odd spot. All the top free agents have already signed, including their own in Michael Pierce, leaving the Ravens with a huge hole in the center of their defensive line. Baltimore will now have to take a look at a picked over free-agent market to hopefully find a replacement.

The Ravens still have some options and don’t necessarily have to rush to make any moves. They could look to the 2020 NFL Draft or even the second wave of free agency following the draft when aging players get cut. But with no guarantees in either situation, Baltimore could look at these five defensive tackles as options right now.

Shelby Harris

Harris doesn’t have the same size as Brockers, falling three inches and 15 pounds lighter. But Harris can play all over the defensive line and was productive last year for the Denver Broncos.

Over the last three years, Harris has started 22 of the 48 games he’s played in, notching an interception, forced fumble, 14 sacks, 22 quarterback hits and 122 combined tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, he earned a 76.8 overall grade last season, which ranked 17th among defensive linemen.

Harris has been a little hot and cold throughout his career. The question for the Ravens is if they feel he can remain more consistent with Baltimore and handle a sizeable workload as more of a space-eating defensive tackle.

Week 11 snap counts: Ravens leaning on midseason additions

Beating the Houston Texans, 41-7, allowed the Baltimore Ravens to sit much of their starting lineup for half of the fourth quarter. It’s the third time this season Baltimore has been out to such a large lead they’ve been able to bench impact players during the game.

On the snap counts for Week 11, we see that reflected as guys like Robert Griffin III, Patrick Mekari and Bennett Jackson got some playing time when they normally wouldn’t. But when I looked a little closer at the snap counts, something interesting popped off the page for me.

On defense, the Ravens saw their midseason additions get significant playing time. In this game, six different players added in Week 5 or later played at least 34% of the defensive snaps. In many cases, these free-agent signings and trade acquisitions actually played more snaps than their long-tenured counterparts.

For instance, cornerback Marcus Peters played 100% of the defensive snaps, significantly more than the 67% Jimmy Smith and 7% Anthony Averett played. Linebackers L.J. Fort (48%) and Josh Bynes (39%) played more than Patrick Onwuasor (15%). Jihad Ward (56%) played more than Brandon Williams (54%). Even Justin Ellis (34%) and Domata Peko (36%) — added last week — played a significant amount.

I contend the Ravens are the best team in the NFL, and a large part of that argument revolves around their defensive turnaround over the last six games. With six players added during the season getting significant playing time in their Week 11 win, a giant glowing sign points to general manager Eric DeCosta’s work behind the scenes.

Seven of the 21 players of the active defensive roster this week were added during the season. That group accounted for 195 of the 671 total defensive snaps (29.1%) against the Texans. That’s practically unheard of for a group that’s playing this well and a testament to both DeCosta and the coaching staff for finding them, signing them and getting them up to speed so quickly.

Broncos make 2 roster moves

The Broncos claimed former Patriots and Ravens cornerback/returner Cyrus Jones off waivers.

The Denver Broncos have waived cornerback Coty Sensabaugh to make room for newly acquired defensive back/returner Cyrus Jones, ESPN’s Field Yates first reported Wednesday afternoon. The news has since been confirmed by multiple media outlets.

Denver announced the move on Wednesday evening.

Sensabaugh (5-11, 187 pounds) joined the team in October and dressed for the last four games, totaling two tackles. He is 30 years old.

Jones (5-10, 200 pounds) was selected by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Alabama. He has spent time bouncing back and forth between the rosters of the Patriots and Baltimore Ravens since then, appearing mostly on special teams.

Jones has returned 12 punts for 113 yards this year, averaging 9.4 yards per return. Denver cutting a cornerback to make room for Jones likely means that Diontae Spencer‘s job is safe, at least for now. Spencer has averaged 8.2 yards per punt return this season and has caught five passes for 31 yards and rushed twice for 14 yards.

Jones, 25, is the second ex-Patriots cornerback the Broncos have acquired this season. Denver traded a sixth-round pick to New England in exchange for nickelback Duke Dawson in August.

Jones was waived by Baltimore earlier this week to make room for nose tackle Domata Peko, who played for the Broncos from 2017-2018.
