4 teams that could be fits for Cam Newton

Cam Newton is a free agent now, but there aren’t a lot of spots where he could get a starting job in the NFL. Here are four options.

Cam Newton hasn’t been healthy for almost two seasons now and that’s not a good sign for a quarterback who used a physical style to be successful. It would be a mistake to think he is done though. Newton is a former top pick in the draft. He’s won an MVP. He’s made three Pro Bowls and been voted All-Pro once. He’s made it to the Super Bowl. He has everything a team would need — when he’s healthy — to lead a squad to a winning record.

Yet, there seem to be slim pickings for Newton when it comes to choosing a team. He’s not going to a team to be a backup. A lot of teams are already settled on their starter. It’s a little late in the game and any team that signs Newton will want a full physical to make sure he’s healthy. That’s a bit difficult with the current Covid-19 situation. Still, these teams could eventually be fits for Newton, and they are spots he should consider when it comes to his free agency decision making process.

Early over/ under for Bills in 2020

The NFL offseason is young, but Las Vegas sportsbooks are already making guesses.

The NFL offseason is young, but Las Vegas sportsbooks are already making guesses. Despite the recent changes around the NFL and AFC East, specifically, via the start of free agency, it’s still business as usual.

According to BetMGM, the Patriots are the divisional favorite, despite their loss of quarterback Tom Brady. However, the Patriots did have one of the NFL’s best defensive units in the league last year so there’s that to consider.

The Pats’ early over/ under total lands at 9.5

But the Bills also have a stout defense, and instead of losing key pieces on offense, they’ve added. Stefon Diggs recently headed to western New York via trade, but Buffalo’s over/ under total is slated just below the Patriots at 8.5.

As the offseason churns on, things are likely going to change for every team in the division, so before the start of the 2020 season, the Bills could eventually become the favorite. It’s a fluid situation, but oddsmakers are still trusting Bill Belichick more, if ever so slightly.

Around the same time just a year ago, the Patriots had a much bigger edge. Their over/ under landed at 11 wins, compared to the Bills at six.

That leap from six wins to 8.5 also sees the Bills overtake the Jets as the second-favorite in the division in this early stage of the offseason as compared to last year. In 2019, the Jets landed at an over/ under of seven.

Flash forward to the present, the Jets drop down to an over/ under of 6.5 wins, slightly edging out the Dolphins, who have an over/ under of six.

In regard to the entire conference, clubhouse leaders include the Chiefs (11.5) and Ravens (11).

RB Melvin Gordon struggling to find offers

Melvin Gordon is not even getting an offer as good as what the Los Angeles Chargers offered last year.

Handful of free agents have found new homes within the past few days, but one player that is still searching is running back Melvin Gordon.

According to NFL Media’s Mike Garofolo, Gordon hasn’t received “anything remotely close” to the offer he could have had with the Chargers last offseason, which was worth around $10 million a year.

Due to the contract dispute, Gordon held out for the first four games of the regular season, but Los Angeles never increased the original offer on the table for him.

The reason why Gordon hasn’t found much success since hitting the market is because it’s becoming more clear that NFL teams aren’t valuing the position as much as they used to due to a shorter shelf life, and he is already 26 years old, along with seeing a decrease in production from 2018 to 2019.

Gordon remained healthy upon returning from his holdout in 2019. However, he has dealt with various lower body injuries since coming into the league in 2016. And his yards per carry average dropped from 5.1 to 3.9 last season in 12 games.

Los Angeles extended Austin Ekeler to a four-year deal, which likely indicated that Gordon won’t be back next season.

At the moment, teams like the Bills, Falcons and Buccaneers reportedly have interest in the former Wisconsin product. If and when signed, it wouldn’t be surprising if it is a short-term deal.

Report: Todd Gurley trade talks picking up

Per a report, the Los Angeles Rams are in discussions about trading former Georgia football RB Todd Gurley.

Todd Gurley is one the best running backs in the National Football League when he’s 100% healthy. Unfortunately for the Georgia Bulldog great, that pesky knee of Gurley’s has caused him issues, hindering his production and limiting his workload. In 2019, Gurley had career-lows in rushing yards (857) and attempts (223).

Gurley is two years into a contract with the Los Angeles Rams that included a $21 million signing bonus and $45 million in guarantees. With reduced production and a substantial contract, it is not shocking that Todd Gurley is frequently brought up in NFL trade talks.

According to a report from Pro Football Talk, those trade talks are picking up.

Given Gurley’s insane contract (good for him), cutting the former Georgia superstar is not really an option for LA.

Earlier this week, we wrote about possible destinations for Gurley if he were to be traded.

Oddsmakers: Latest AFC East odds post-Tom Brady

One would think so, but they’re not. According to Bet Online’s latest odds, the New England Patriots are still the current favorite. But things have changed. Odds are much closer.

The Buffalo Bills are the favorites in the AFC East after Tom Brady’s departure, right?

One would think so, but they’re not. According to Bet Online‘s latest odds, the New England Patriots are still the current favorite. But things have changed. Odds are much closer.

The Patriots were slated 2/5 odds to win the AFC East on March 3. That’s now changed to 10/11 odds. Things have also improved for the rest of the division, including the Bills.

Here’s how those all lineup currently:

  • Patriots: 10/11 (2/3 previously)
  • Bills: 7/4 (7/2)
  • Jets: 13/2 (7/1)
  • Dolphins: 10/1 (20/1)

While the Patriots are the favorites now, things will certainly change. The Patriots currently don’t have a starting quarterback yet, just Jarrett Stidham. Roster changes will happen across the division, too.

So get ready, the Bills just might be the favorites to win their first AFC East crown since 1995.

With Tom Brady gone, Josh Allen is AFC East’s winningest starting QB

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, but you’ve been sitting on the throne for far too long. In fact, that’s now a throne that belongs to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Congratulations to Tom Brady on a heck of a career in the AFC East.

Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, but you’ve been sitting on the throne for far too long. In fact, that’s now a throne that belongs to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Brady announced Tuesday that he is leaving the Patriots; all signs point to a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

So with Brady out, facts are facts. The AFC East now has a new winningest quarterback residing in it, and it’s Allen.

Brady’s 219-64 career record was going to be tough for anyone to beat. Allen currently sits at a 15-12 record in his career. Really, it’s a 15-11 record because one of those losses includes a Nathan Peterman pick-six interception which helped the Houston Texans beat the Bills once upon a time, but 15-12 it is. Allen started that game and got the loss, but he left it due to injury.

Moving around the horn, the New York Jets had a pretty brutal season in 2019, which also included Sam Darnold’s spell with mono. Overall, Darnold’s record is nearly the exact opposite of Allen’s record at 11-15 overall.

The next two teams are nearly a wash. Currently the Miami Dolphins starting quarterback is Ryan Fitzpatrick. While there’s love for Fitz in Buffalo, his career record is 55-83-1. With Miami he’s 5-8 and only has one non-losing record with a team, a 6-6 record with the Texans. For what it’s worth, he was 20-33 overall with the Bills.

Wrapping up with New England, like the Dolphins, their  current and most-realistic situation is that of a starting quarterback who is 0-0.

Jarrett Stidham is technically their No. 1 QB as things stand, and he’s 0-0. But if the Patriots, bring in a rookie to compete, as the Dolphins are likely to do, that’s still 0-0. Another veteran addition is possible, but typically when quarterbacks are on the open market, they don’t have winning records either.

In terms of individual stats, you can’t really compare since Fitzpatrick has started over 100 games more than both Darnold and Allen. So in the fairest of comparisons via record… and Allen reigns supreme.

Potential destinations for Georgia great Todd Gurley if traded by Rams

Some potential destinations if the Los Angeles Rams trade former Georgia football RB Todd Gurley during NFL free agency.

Former Georgia running back Todd Gurley has reportedly had his name floated around in trade talks by the Los Angeles Rams recently.

Michael Silver was the first to report the news of the trade talks.

Gurley is two years into a contract with the Los Angeles Rams that included a $21 million signing bonus and $45 million in guarantees. With reduced production and a substantial contract, it is not shocking that Todd Gurley is frequently brought up in NFL trade talks.

Silver added to his report, noting the Rams are seeking a draft pick in return if they do trade the two-time All-Pro running back — the pick would be something in the range of the second to fourth round.

Then there’s the option to flat-out cut Gurley, but Silver mentioned how difficult that would be given his $20.15 million dead cap hit if he were to be released.

Gurley is meant for Los Angeles and it’s a shame his knee injury is holding him back from being the superstar running back he was early in his career.

However, Gurley, 25, still has plenty of gas left in the tank and continued to show flashes of brilliance last season on the Rams.

Cameron DaSilva at RamsWire took a look at where Gurley may end up if a trade is put in place.

RamsWire noted the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Bucs and Denver Broncos would seem to be potential trade partners for Gurley and the Rams.

DaSilva on why the Dolphins would be an ideal trade partner:

They’re in a complete rebuild and while it might seem counterproductive to trade for someone like Gurley, it would give them a player for fans to get excited about. They have $70.75 million in cap space right now and five picks in the first three rounds, so trade ammo isn’t a question.

There isn’t a team that makes more sense for Gurley than the Dolphins. They could part ways with their third- and fourth-round picks and still have plenty of assets for their rebuild.

For what it’s worth, Gurley already vacations in Miami often. Also, I cannot picture him anywhere other than a big-market team in a big-time city like Miami, New York or Los Angeles.

On the Broncos, DaSilva discussed Denver’s three third-round draft picks and how the team will likely be looking for a new running back via free agency or the draft. Would two third-round picks be enough to get Gurley to Denver?

Shaq Lawson pens farwell note to Bills Mafia

Buffalo Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson has officially confirmed he’s leaving the team that made him a first-round pick at the 2016 NFL Draft. Lawson has reportedly landed a three-year deal with the Dolphins.

Buffalo Bills defensive end Shaq Lawson has officially confirmed he’s leaving the team that made him a first-round pick at the 2016 NFL Draft. Lawson has reportedly landed a three-year deal with the Dolphins.

On Monday evening amongst the flurry of moves the Bills made via free agency and a trade for wide receiver Stefon Diggs, Lawson posted a farewell letter to Bills Mafia.

Lawson started his statement off on a somber note, writing, “it’s with sincere sadness that I confirm my time in Buffalo has come to an end.” The 25-year-old thanks the team’s ownership and the coaching staffs he played under, led by Rex Ryan and Sean McDermott, respectively, as well.

Despite reportedly staying in the AFC East, Lawson still calls the Bills a “championship caliber organization” in the message he posted to social media.

Here’s Lawson’s full message the fans and city that will have a “special place in his heart,” he wrote:
