Raiders try out three former first-round picks including CB DJ Hayden

It was a day for former highly regarded players to visit Las Vegas. The Raiders tried out four players on Tuesday, three of whom were former first-round picks. One of whom was their own former first-round pick. Two are even named DJ.

The former Raiders player who paid the Raiders a visit was former 12th overall pick DJ Hayden. He was selected by the Raiders out of Houston in 2013 despite having had life-saving heart surgery just months before. He ended up spending just four seasons with the Raiders and the team didn’t pick up his fifth-year option. He then spent a season in Detroit and the past three seasons in Jacksonville.

As it happens, the other DJ the Raiders hosted today was taken with the pick just before the Hayden pick in the 2013 draft.

The Chargers selected DJ Fluker with the 11th overall pick and has started 96 games over eight seasons at tackle and guard. He started eight games at right tackle for the Ravens last season. He spent the first six games of this season on suspension for an undisclosed violation and was officially reinstated today.

Also visiting was CB Daqueze Dennard who was the 24th overall pick in the 2014 draft. He spent the first six years of his career in Cincinnati before playing in Atlanta last season. The 30-year-old has four career interceptions.

The fourth player the Raiders hosted was DL Chris Slayton who was a seventh-round pick by the Giants in the 2019 draft. He has never appeared in an NFL game.

Bears worked out three defensive backs, including DJ Hayden

Following struggles in the secondary in Week 1, the Bears worked out three defensive backs on Tuesday, including DJ Hayden.

The Chicago Bears have questions on defense following Sunday night’s 34-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, especially in the secondary.

And it showed in how the Bears worked out three defensive backs on Tuesday, including DJ Hayden, Lafayette Pitts and Kevon Seymour, according to the transaction wire.

The most prominent name on the list is Hayden, a former first-round pick 2013, who has been a solid slot corner, which is exactly what the Bears are looking for following Marqui Christian’s struggles against the Rams.

Hayden spent his first four seasons with the Raiders, where he totaled 174 tackles and 26 pass breakups in 45 games. Hayden spent the previous three seasons with the Jaguars, where he totaled 103 tackles and 11 pass breakups in 30 games.

The Bears have concerns in the slot, where Christian got the starting nod against the Rams. He allowed five catches on six targets for 85 yards, two touchdowns. Duke Shelley, who was a surprise scratch in Week 1, figures to get a look in the slot against the Bengals.

The Jacksonville Jaguars only ruled out one player for their season finale against the Indianapolis Colts in receiver Michael Walker (hamstring), but there were several starters ruled questionable. On the offensive side, Gardner Minshew II (shoulder) and Leonard Fournette (neck) will be game day decisions, while A.J. Bouye (wrist) will be one on the defensive side.

Fournette and Walker didn’t practice Friday, however, Bouye and Minshew were limited. That’s likely not a good sign for Fournette, who has played in all of the Jags’ games this year and has done a good job staying healthy. If he’s unable to play, rookie Ryquell Armstead and Devine Ozigbo are the only two other tailbacks on the roster, while Nick Foles would replace Minshew and Brandon Watson or Parry Nickerson would get an opportunity in Bouye’s place.

Another key player who surfaced on the injury report was receiver Dede Westbrook (neck/shoulder), who didn’t practice Friday after fully participating Wednesday and Thursday. If he can’t play, the Jags will have DJ Chark Jr., Chris Conley, Keelan Cole, C.J. Board available at the receiver position.

As for the Indianapolis Colts, they ruled two players out in cornerback Quincy Wilson and tailback Jordan Wilkins. However, it hasn’t been revealed as to what players have been ruled questionable, but we’ll provide an update on their full report when it becomes available.
