NBA Twitter reacts to Dillon Brooks ‘dirty’ foul, ejection from playoff game

Was it a dirty play? Just a hard foul? Oregon legend Dillon Brooks was ejected on Tuesday night, and Twitter reacted to the “cheap” play.

On Tuesday, Memphis Grizzlies forward and former Oregon Ducks’ great Dillon Brooks made waves in the NBA world with a hard foul in the first half of a playoff game against the Golden State Warriors that left Gary Payton II with a fractured elbow, and Brooks ejected from the game.

It was certainly a hard foul, and warranted an ejection. But was it dirty? That, of course, was up for the NBA Twitter world to decide.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr got in on the action with some harsh words for Brooks, and now we’re questioning whether or not the Oregon legend’s actions will see him suspended for game 3 of the series. Here’s some of what people are saying about the play online.

NBA Twitter reacts to Gary Payton II suffering fractured left elbow after foul from Dillon Brooks

After news broke of Gary Payton II suffering a fractured elbow following a foul from Dillon Brooks in Game 2, NBA Twitter exploded with reactions.

With tensions already high on Tuesday night in Game 2, Memphis Grizzlies guard Dillon Brooks was ejected in the first quarter of Game 2 after being assessed a flagrant two for an ugly foul on Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II.

Brooks swatted Payton II across the head from behind on a fastbreak layup attempt. Payton II crashed to the floor and immediately grabbed his left arm in pain.

While Brooks was removed from the game, Payton II also missed the remainder of the contest after needing X-rays on his left elbow.

Without one of Golden State’s defensive catalysts, Ja Morant dropped 47 points for Memphis on the way to tying the series at 1-1.

Following the Grizzlies’ 106-101 win over the Warriors in Game 2, Steve Kerr announced Payton II suffered a fractured left elbow following the Brooks foul. Payton II will receive an MRI when the Warriors return to Bay Area on Wednesday to determine the extent of his elbow injury.

After dropping 15 points in Game 5 to ice the Denver Nuggets, Payton II earned back-to-back starts alongside Steph Curry and Klay Thompson in the Memphis series.

After earning the final roster spot before the start of the season, Payton II turned into a fan favorite as one of the top stories of the 2021-22 campaign.

Payton II has consistently provided a spark in Golden State’s rotation with gritty defense and powerful dunks at the rim. During his breakout season with the Warriors, Payton II averaged 7.1 points on 61.6% shooting from the field with 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 17.6 minutes per contest.

Following the news of Payton II’s injury after the foul from Brooks, the NBA Twitter community exploded with reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on Tuesday night.

Memphis’ Dillon Brooks needs to be suspended for his cheap shot on Gary Payton II

The NBA has a decision to make.

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

Memphis’ Dillon Brooks was ejected three minutes into last night’s Game 2 against the Golden State Warriors after he hit Gary Payton II in the head from behind while Payton was going up for a layup.

The Warriors guard fell awkwardly to the ground and ended up fracturing his elbow on the play and now his status for the rest of the series is in doubt.

Now the NBA needs to do the right thing and suspend Brooks for at least a few games because what he did was not cool at all and severely impacts the Warriors and this tremendous series because Payton is a key defensive player who had the best chance of at least trying to contain Ja Morant, who had 47 points in the Grizzlies’ Game 2 win last night in Memphis.

Here’s the play in case you missed it.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr was rightfully furious after the game, saying Brooks “broke the code.”

“I don’t know if it was intentional, but it was dirty,” Kerr said. “There is a code. This code that players follow where you never put a guy’s season [or] career in jeopardy by taking somebody out in midair and clubbing him across the head, ultimately fracturing Gary’s elbow… He broke the code. Dillon Brooks “broke the code.”

Kerr was also heard yelling, “Get the (expletive) out of here, Brooks!” moments after the play, according to ESPN.

Brooks’ Flagrant 2 was a lot worse than the soft Flagrant 2 Draymond Green got in Game 1. It was a dirty play that deserves a much more severe penalty than just missing most of last night’s game.

It’s also a play that adds even more storylines to this series that has been a fantastic on thus far. Morant and Co. vs. Steph Curr and Co. has been electric and it should be crazy Saturday night at the Chase Center when the Warriors will look to take a 2-1 series lead at home.

It’s a shame Payton won’t be a part of that game and there’s no way Brooks should be a part of it, too.

We’ll have to wait and see if the NBA agrees.

When the Warriors return to the Bay Area on Wednesday, Payton II will get an MRI to determine the severity of his injury.

After earning the Warriors’ final roster spot before the start of the season, Payton II blossomed into one of the best stories of the 2021-22 campaign. Behind tough defense and emphatic dunks, Payton II developed into a key rotational piece for the Warriors. After coming off the bench in round one against the Denver Nuggets, Payton II drew starts in both Game 1 and Game 2 in Memphis.

During the 2021-22 season, Payton II averaged 7.1 points on 61.6% shooting from the field with 3.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 17.6 minutes per contest.

Without Payton II, the Warriors will need help finding a way to slow down Ja Morant. In Game 2, Morant tallied 47 points on 15-of-31 shooting from the floor with eight assists and eight boards to lead the Grizzlies to a victory, 106-101.

Game 3 is set to tip-off on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PT at San Francisco’s Chase Center.

Watch: Grizzlies’ Dillon Brooks ejected after rough foul on Gary Payton II in Game 2

After Gary Payton II suffered an elbow injury following a rough foul from Dillon Brooks, the Memphis guard was ejected in the first quarter of Game 2.

After Draymond Green was ejected following a questionable flagrant two foul call in Game 1, it didn’t take long for things to get chippy between the Memphis Grizzlies and Golden State Warriors in Game 2 on Tuesday night.

On a fast break, Gary Payton II’s layup attempt was interrupted by an ugly foul from behind from Dillon Brooks. The Memphis guard appeared to make direct contact with Payton II’s head as he flew through the air defenselessly.

Brooks’ foul caused a hard fall to the court for Payton II. Following his fall, Payton II immediately grabbed his elbow in pain.

After the foul was reviewed by referee Scott Foster, Brooks was assesed a flagrant two foul and ejected from the contest with nine minutes remaining in the first quarter.

While Brooks was ejected, Payton II also made a trip to the locker room with an apparent injury. Payton II needed X-rays on his left elbow after his fall in the first quarter.

It was late announced that Payton II would miss the remainder of the contest with an elbow injury. Without Payton II, the Warriors will need to find a different answer to slow down Ja Morant in Game 2.

Ja Morant and Dillon Brooks did the Griddy on the Timberwolves logo after winning Game 6 and it was so disrespectfully fun

Whew this rivalry is going to be fun moving forward

We know the vibe with the Grizzlies by now. They ain’t “ducking no smoke,” as Ja Morant put it before.

They’re easily the best trash-talking team in the NBA at this point. They’re so good even Morant’s dad is talking trash. And why wouldn’t they be? They’ve absolutely backed it up all year long by being the second-best team in the NBA this season as far as records go.

When you’re that good? Yeah, you can talk a little trash. Or a lot. Whatever it is you choose to do.

That’s why it’s kind of hard to get mad at the Grizzlies for dancing on the Timberwolves logo on their way out of the door.

The Grizzlies eliminated the Wolves after yet another comeback victory in Game 6 on Friday night. After the win, Ja Morant and Dillon Brooks made their way to midcourt where they did the Griddy all over the Wolves’ logo.

Whew, man. This ain’t quite Kyrie stomping on the Celtics’ logo vibes, but it’s definitely close. And that’s what makes it so good.

This is just perfectly petty. It’s not too much but it’s just enough to get the people going. Fans absolutely loved this.

Celtics injury update: Memphis Grizzlies to sit Morant, Adams, Jackson, Brooks in 2021-22 season finale

The move will allow Boston to choose their seeding destiny.

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced that they will sit several key players in theirs and the Boston Celtics’ final game of the 2021-22 NBA season, which in turn will allow the Celtics to choose their seeding destiny heading into the 2021-22 NBA Playoffs.

Memphis announced that Steven Adams (ankle soreness), Dillon Brooks (hip soreness), Jaren Jackson, Jr. (thigh soreness), Tyus Jones (hand soreness), Ja Morant (knee soreness), Tyrell Terry (foot soreness), and Killian Tillie (knee soreness) all are out for Sunday night’s season-ending contest, with Desmond Bane (foot soreness) and Brandon Clarke (thigh contusion) listed as questionable.

With the Milwaukee Bucks playing the Cleveland Cavaliers without several key players of their own out to rest before the postseason, the Celtics may be in a position to rest players themselves if dropping to a lower seed seems more desirable — or to play good players and seize the second seed for themselves.

Reaction: Dillon Brooks leads Grizzlies past Christian Wood, weary Rockets

Christian Wood led Houston with 22 points and 11 rebounds on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough on night two of a split back-to-back in Memphis.

Christian Wood led Houston with 22 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough on night two of a split back-to-back in Memphis as the Grizzlies held on for a 113-106 victory (box score). For the young Rockets (8-18), it’s their second consecutive loss after seven straight wins.

After playing Friday night at home versus the Milwaukee Bucks, Houston arrived early Saturday morning in Memphis after a turbulent, storm-interrupted flight. Veteran guard Eric Gordon did not play, as has been the case throughout the season on back-to-backs, and the usual starting backcourt of Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. remains injured.

That left the Rockets quite short-handed. After falling behind, 21-5, only minutes into Saturday’s game, they clawed back but weren’t able to ever get fully over the hump. Houston tried starting its original frontcourt of Wood and Daniel Theis to match up with the size and physicality of Steven Adams for the Grizzlies, but the problems related to floor spacing that have plagued that duo all year were again present.

The Grizzlies (16-11) were led by 25 points from Dillon Brooks, who returned from a stint in the NBA’s health and safety protocols.

Besides Wood, other Houston players in double-figures included:

  • Alperen Sengun: 15 points, 5-of-8 shooting (62.5%), 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks in 23 minutes
  • Armoni Brooks: 18 points, 6-of-12 shooting (50.0%), 4-of-9 on 3-pointers (44.4%), 6 rebounds, 6 assists in 34 minutes
  • Josh Christopher: 12 points, 5-of-9 shooting (55.6%), 2-of-4 on 3-pointers (50.0%), 2 assists in 21 minutes
  • Garrison Mathews: 12 points, 3-of-10 shooting (30.0%), 2-of-8 on 3-pointers (25.0%), 2 assists in 27 minutes

The Rockets will return to action on Monday night at Atlanta (13-13), with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central. Until then, here’s a sampling of Saturday’s highlights and postgame reaction from Memphis.
