Dez Bryant had a classy response to CeeDee Lamb wearing No. 88 with the Cowboys

Awesome.

When it comes to Dallas Cowboys wide receivers, the No. 88 holds special significance.

Cowboys greats Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin and Dez Bryant have all sported the number. And Cowboys first-round pick CeeDee Lamb is set to be the latest Dallas receiver to don the prestigious digits.

And, yes, he has the approval of Dez Bryant.

After getting drafted by the Cowboys, Lamb — who wore No. 2 at Oklahoma — said he intended to wear No. 10 with the Cowboys. But Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stepped in and said he’d push for Lamb to wear No. 88 to honor Jones’ late Arkansas teammate, Jerry Lamb, who died in December and also wore 88.

So, when one Twitter user wondered what Dez thought of Lamb’s new number, the former Cowboys receiver opted to respond with encouragement for the new No. 88.

He said on Twitter, “BE YOU and BE GREAT.”

Given that the initial tweet was looking to stir the pot between the receivers, it was great to see Bryant come in with a classy response rather than feed a nonexistent rift.

Dez Bryant seems cool with Cowboys giving CeeDee Lamb No. 88

Dez Bryant was very cool with the Dallas Cowboys handing his number over to top pick CeeDee Lamb.

The rookies are getting their jersey numbers. The Dallas Cowboys have honored their top pick Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb with special numerals: 88.

Those were worn by Drew Pearson, Michael Irvin and most recently Dez Bryant, wideouts who starred for America’s Team.

Jerry Jones suggested recently he thought about bringing Bryant back into the fold while in the shower.

So, why tempt fate by giving his number to Lamb? Because it probably isn’t going to happen.

Anyway. how did Bryant, who played college ball at Oklahoma State, an arch-rival of the Sooners, feel about his digits being handed over to an OU player?

He was cool with it.

Irvin didn’t expect his number to be retired. The Cowboys don’t do that.

Dez Bryant tells CeeDee Lamb to ‘be you and be great’ after getting No. 88 for Dallas Cowboys

A lot of attention comes with being a great player for the Dallas Cowboys. Dez Bryant tweeted at CeeDee Lamb after Lamb got his No. 88.

A lot of attention comes with being a great player for the Dallas Cowboys.

The hype train surrounding Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb after his selection with 17th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by Dallas has not slowed down since it happened.

Lamb joins an ultra-talented offense with the likes of Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliot and Amari Cooper. He planned on carving his own path by wearing No. 10, but Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones insisted on something more traditional.

Dallas’ greats Michael Irvin, Drew Pearson and Dez Bryant have donned the No. 88 for the Cowboys. Lamb is now going to do the same, and Bryant reached out to the former Oklahoma star on Twitter about it.

Lamb was a Biletnikoff Award finalist for the college football’s best pass catcher in 2019. Lamb recorded back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons in 2018 and ’19 and posted a ridiculous 21.4 yards per catch total in his final season. He started as a true freshman for the Sooners in 2017 and helped Oklahoma have a record setting offense with Baker Mayfield at the helm.

Also joining him in Dallas is former Oklahoma defensive tackle Neville Gallimore, who was taken in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Cowboys. He will wear No. 75.

Dez Bryant tweets support of CeeDee Lamb rocking the 88

One of the most misunderstood sentiments around the career of Dez Bryant was that he wasn’t a good teammate, but anyone who has really paid attention knows that is far from the case. Bryant was a Dallas Cowboys fan long before he heard his name called during the 2010 NFL draft and his reverence for the star should be unquestioned. His passion is his defining characteristic, and many unfamiliar with witnessing the such don’t fully grasp how that can manifest itself during stressful situations.

This isn’t to say that every Bryant outburst was well-timed or well-received, just that it came from good intentions. Since being away from football, and now working to come back after two years out of the league, Bryant has spent time on social media being highly supportive of other NFL players, so it should come as no surprise he is extending his best wishes to the newest Cowboys receiver, CeeDee Lamb.

Even as Lamb is now going to wear Bryant’s famed jersey, No. 88, there’s nothing but love emanating from Bryant’s Twitter handle.

There should be no shocker there, but part of Bryant’s signing off on the coronation is the realization that with owner Jerry Jones convincing Lamb to don the 88 (the player originally announced he wanted to wear No. 10) is the fact it means Bryant will not be returning to sport it for the Cowboys.

After suffering an achilles injury trying to mount a comeback with the New Orleans Saints in 2018, Bryant spent 2019 out of football. He’s been training with NFL quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott in an effort to catch the eye of an NFL team this offseason, but with the shutdown of football hasn’t had the opportunity to workout for any coaching staffs.

Hopefully when the country opens back up Bryant will have the chance to latch on and further his career until he is ready to walk away from the game on his own terms.

Lamb makes jersey decision after stunning offer from Cowboys

The new Cowboys WR will wear 10 in Dallas, but only after owner Jerry Jones offered him one of the most famous numbers in team history.

CeeDee Lamb knows the expectations are high for him coming to Dallas. But the wideout who just turned 21 years old a few weeks ago was catapulted into another whole eschelon of rarefied air in his first conversation with his new employers at America’s Team.

The Cowboys may have been surprised when Lamb fell to them with the 17th overall pick. What was likely downright jaw-dropping for longtime fans of the team may have been the offer the team made to their new pass-catching prospect.

Lamb announced on Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan Thursday night that, after wearing No. 2 in college (and even 9 for a while), he would wear the number 10 as a Cowboy. But Jerry Jones first offered 88, to a player he hadn’t even formally interviewed prior to drafting him.

Dallas doesn’t retire jersey numbers, but 88 is special in Cowboys history. It was Michael Irvin’s number when the team won three Super Bowls. It belonged to Drew Pearson, who hauled in the first-ever Hail Mary touchdown pass from Roger Staubach. Most recently, Dez Bryant wore 88; fans who longed for a reunion with the free agent receiver assumed it would be his if he returned.

Jones offered the vaunted jersey to Lamb, but the owner’s offer may have had less to do with the Cowboys who have worn it than with one of Jones’s college ball connections.

Jones said, according to RJ Ochoa:

“I recently lost a great friend. One of my very best, might have been my best. I played ball with him at Arkansas. He was number 88. His name was Jerry Lamb. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. We couldn’t have won a national championship without him. And he was a wonderful player.

“And so when we were- this is a little drama from our perspective- when we were all sitting there and had said our piece, and then we said, ‘Okay, what’s it going to be?’ I said, ‘In honor of my great friend that just passed this year, we’re going to have his namesake come on here and wear old Number 88. Just like Michael and Dez and those guys.’ And we’ve got us a wide receiver. And let me tell you one thing: if he’s got the competes and heart of that Jerry Lamb, he’ll be bad to the bone.”

Tavon Austin wore No. 10 most recently for the Cowboys, but it’s not a number with much history in Dallas. Maybe Lamb will be the one to start a tradition of excellence with it.

Report Card: Cowboys make Dean’s list in Round 1 grades for CeeDee Lamb

Most draft analysts agree, the Cowboys selection of WR CeeDee Lamb is one of the best picks of the 2020 NFL draft.

The Cowboys made serious waves with their selection of WR CeeDee Lamb in the 2020 NFL draft. Instead of picking a defender like they’d done with their first pick in four of the previous five drafts, Dallas selected just their third first-round WR round in the last 29 years.

Alvin Harper in 1991 and Dez Bryant in 2010 preceded Lamb with the honor. The bold pick builds a strength, with Lamb joining Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup to form arguably the most impressive receiving group in the league. Draft analysis agree, absolutely loving the value and pick for Dallas with the first selection of the Mike McCarthy era.

Draft Wire: A+

“Much like the Broncos, the Cowboys steal a top-10 overall player and fill a big need with a dynamic playmaker.”

Touchdown Wire: A

“You could fault the Cowboys for not going with the best defensive player available with all of their free agency losses, but they also lost Randall Cobb in free agency, and Lamb was absolutely the best player left on the board. Lamb brings DeAndre Hopkins to mind with his toughness, quickness, and route awareness. You put him in the slot next to Amari Cooper, or in the “Z” position on the opposite side of the formation, and he’ll become Dak Prescott’s new best buddy.”

NFL.com:

“Mike McCarthy could see a little Davante Adams in Lamb’s game. The Oklahoma standout is an impressive playmaker with spectacular ball skills and running ability. He is a threat to score from anywhere on the field, and he gives the Cowboys a potent set of pass catchers on the perimeter.”

ESPN: Grade – 92

“This pick doesn’t fill a pressing need with Amari Copper re-signing and Michael Gallup coming off a breakout year. Need is overrated. Lamb is an outstanding value at this point, and adding his kind of talent is never a bad idea. He gives quarterback Dak Prescott and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore a potent No. 3 receiver that makes it tough to load the box to slow down running back Ezekiel Elliott.”

Bleacher Report: A

“Shhhhh! Quiet please. Genius at work.

ESPN’s Matt Mosley reports that Jerry Jones asked his scouts not to disturb him during the draft. Mosley soon had to make it very clear that it was a joke (after a few hundred retweets). Still, you can picture it, can’t you? “Lock the door behind you. Leave the bourbon. Both bottles. Field Mike McCarthy’s calls yourself. Dak’s agent too. Finally, just me, my 12-name draft board  and my old Jimmie Rodgers records. Now to win a Super Bowl. Wait, what is that clapping? That telltale clapping? Could it be…Jason Garrett’s spirit, still haunting me from beyond his firing? WHY WON’T IT STOP? ARGGGGGH!”

Fortunately, Jones has not really tuned out his son or his front office (he clearly had a few people in his little man cave with him). And with that, it’s time for another Elite Receiver Report Card, your guide to determining what the big-name wide receivers in the 2020 draft class do best.

CBS Sports: B+

“This is a classic case of a team not expecting the player to be there. The didn’t necessarily need a WR, but he was there. I think they would have picked a pass rusher here had Lamb not fallen to them. If you are true to your board and have a great grade on the guy, you have to take him.”

PFF:

“There wasn’t much CeeDee Lamb to Dallas discussion leading up to the draft, but that is only because no one expected him to fall this far. Lamb came in at sixth on the PFF Big Board, a verifiable steal at the 17th overall pick. He has been one of the best receivers in all of college football with the ball in his hands after the catch, averaging 9.2 yards after the catch per reception (tied for second) and forcing 38 missed tackles after the catch since 2018 (second). With Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup already in Dallas, Lamb’s addition immediately gives them one of the best wide receiving corps in the NFL.

Sports Illustrated: A+

“With Randall Cobb joining Houston, the Cowboys needed a new slot receiver. What they smartly realized is if they found one who could also play the “Z” position, going in motion and aligning outside, that would allow them to slide pricey star Amari Cooper into the slot, where he’s guaranteed to avoid the press-jam coverage that sometimes gives him trouble. Even better is that Lamb himself can also play significant snaps inside, affording offensive coordinator Kellen Moore the ultimate flexibility with his first-round wide receivers. Expect to see even more of the creative pre-snap motioning and stack-release tactics from Moore this season. Having Lamb and Cooper together almost assures that Michael Gallup, who is quietly developing into a nice “X” receiver, will often face one-on-one coverage. And in that same vein, it could mean lighter run boxes for Ezekiel Elliott. This is a quality pick with a potentially significant domino effect.”

The Ringer: A+

“Receiver wasn’t a strong need for the Cowboys with Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup under contract, but it’s tough to criticize them for defaulting to the clear Best Player Available strategy by grabbing Lamb. The Oklahoma pass catcher, who checked in at no. 6 on my Big Board, is a smooth route runner with a physical, aggressive style at the catch point and after the catch. He’s savvy with the ball in the air, jockeying for position to gain leverage and win 50-50 balls, and is slippery and elusive in space, exploding past―and sometimes through―tackle attempts while picking up extra yards downfield.

Lamb isn’t the most sudden receiver in this class, but he showed off the speed to get over the top of a defense (and averaged 19.0 yards per catch in his college career, including a 21.4-yard average in 2019—good for third among FBS players) and the ability to separate late in his route to create space downfield. He’s absurdly productive and has the skill set to make an early impact in his career, even in a stacked skill-position group in Dallas. Dak Prescott will put up some ridiculous numbers this year and the Cowboys offense has a chance to be one of the best in the league.”

SB Nation

“A pure man among boys at times during his Oklahoma career, Lamb is still making Texas defenders miss. He is hands down not only the best after-the-catch threat in this class, but perhaps in all of football.

Combine that with his ability to make contested catches, his insanely sharp routes and his potential to take any throw the distance, and he’s the 1B to Jerry Jeudy’s 1A. Line him up anywhere, just get him the ball.

This is an absolute steal and a must-get for the Cowboys at 17.”

USA Today: A

“Receiver wasn’t a pressing need for Dallas, but who cares? Lamb is the best receiver in this class and now he’s being dropped into what was an elite passing game in 2019. The Oklahoma star does it all: He can win deep, he can win short, he’s a beast after the catch and he dominated in contested catch situations. The Cowboys could not pass up on a talent like that. Jerry better get Dak Prescott’s contract done soon, because he’s about to put up monster numbers in 2020.”

Mecole Hardman and Georgia track star Matthew Boling jokingly agree to 100m race

Former Georgia football WR and current KC Chiefs speedster Mecole Hardman jokingly agreed to a 100m race with UGA track star Matthew Boling.

First, the Twitter battle:

If you’ve been active on Twitter the past two days, you may have scrolled across a debate taking place between some high-profile athletes.

What’s the debate topic, you ask?

Which state has better high school football players, Georgia or Texas?

You can see a summary of the Twitter war here

This dispute began when Hardman, who attended Elbert County High School in Georgia, replied to Tampa Bay Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans’ (who is from Texas) tweet about Texas football being the best in the country.

From there, things got wild. Dez Bryant got in on it. As did Nick Chubb and Patrick Mahomes.

Eagles cornerback Darius Slay, Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs, Redskins’ Landon Collins and Georgia wide receiver Lawrence Cager all said their piece as well.

[lawrence-related id=26043]

Matthew Boling vs Mecole Hardman:

Regarding a Texas vs Georgia all-star team, Nick Chubb tweeted that he would “run through anybody from Texas.” (Maybe the most trash talking Chubb’s ever done)

Mecole’s response is as follows:

Mecole’s tweet caught the eye of current Georgia track star Matthew Boling, who ran a wind-aided 9.98 second time in the 100-meter dash – an all-time all-conditions record.

Boling may be a Georgia Bulldog, but he hails from Houston, Texas and had to get in on the battle.

Boling responded to Mecole’s tweet with a simple cap emoji. For those who are a little out of touch with the current slang, cap apparently means that someone is lying. So, in simpler terms, Boling said that Mecole was lying about being able to outrun anybody from Texas.

That’s when Mecole, referencing Boling’s 9.98 second time in the 100-meter dash, told Boling that his speed would not translate to the football field.

Boling heard Mecole’s rebuttal and requested a race in the 100 meter dash.

Mecole wasted no time, and within an hour the two had agreed to what would be an epic showdown.

Sadly, it’ll never happen. But how incredible would it be if the two Georgia Bulldogs actually did pull off this race? That would be a quarantine classic.

Better HS football: Georgia or Texas? Mecole Hardman, Nick Chubb debate with Patrick Mahomes, Dez Bryant

Mecole Hardman and Nick Chubb debated with Patrick Mahomes and Dez Bryant over which state has the best HS football, Georgia or Texas.

Former Georgia wide receiver Mecole Hardman got into it with his current teammate on the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, as well as former NFL receiver Dez Bryant via Twitter on the topic of which state produces the best football players.

Now everyone has their bias, but history tells us the top high school football states are usually California, Georgia, Texas and Florida, in no specific order.  Some would throw Louisiana and Alabama in there as well.

This dispute began when Hardman, who attended Elbert County High School in Georgia, replied to Tampa Bay Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans’ (who is from Texas) tweet about Texas football being the best in the country.

After the rookie dropped this bomb, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, and Galveston, Texas native Dez Bryant had something to say.

Bryant had nothing but love for Mecole, but told him he was crazy to say Georgia high school football overlooks Texas.

Hardman then made claims that a Georgia high school all-star team would beat a Texas high school all-star team with ease.

When Seahawks safety, Texas native and former Longhorn Quandre Diggs posed the question as to who would tackle Earl Campbell (born and raised in Tyler, Texas) on this hypothetical Texas all-star high school team, Mecole had the perfect response.

I’ll take your Earl Campbell and I’ll raise you a Herschel Walker.

After Hardman’s confident attitude started gaining attention, his quarterback had to get in on the debate.

Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes attended Texas Tech and was born and raised in Texas. He was not about to allow his rookie receiver to take shots at his beloved state that easily.

The Super Bowl and former league MVP had to get at least a couple of jabs in on the Georgia native.

But wait it did not end there.

Nick Chubb, from Cedartown, Georgia, got in the action.

This thing keeps getting better and better.

Florida actually has the most active NFL players at 180, with California in second with 175, Texas with 137 and Georgia at 97. That being said, Texas has nearly three times the population that Georgia does and California closer to four times Georgia.

Who would you take in this battle of the states?

Former NFL WR Dez Bryant praises Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant

The three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver said that Morant reminds him of a mix of Allen Iverson and Kobe Bryant.

[jwplayer kSHbmusT]

Three-time NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver Dez Bryant offered some high praise for Memphis Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant on Twitter on Wednesday night.

Bryant called Morant “different” and that the guard will soon be the face of the NBA after his magnificent play throughout the 2019-20 season. Morant averaged 17.6 points, 6.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 59 games played and emerged as the favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award.

After his play this season, Bryant even said that Morant reminds him of a mix of Allen Iverson and the late Kobe Bryant based on his array of skills on the court.

Of course, Bryant recorded three-straight seasons with at least 1,200 yards receiving with the Dallas Cowboys from 2012-2014, emerging as one of the top wideouts in the NFL during that span.

Bryant has not played since the 2017 season but has been seen periodically at various NBA games and is a noted fan of LeBron James and now, apparently, Morant, too.
