Why Alabama fans should be excited about freshman WR Traeshon Holden

After losing star wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III to the NFL, Alabama fans now look to Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith as the two receivers to lead the 2020 Crimson Tide offense.

John Metchie III and Tyrell Shavers are two names the Alabama fanbase may have heard before, and it’s likely they will hear their names called more often in 2020. The both of them are poised to step up this season to help the offense maintain there elite level of play.

One freshman receiver may be able to have an impact in his first year in Tuscaloosa, Traeshon Holden.

Holden, who is native to Kissimmee, Florida, finished his high school career at Narbonne high school in Harbor City, California.

In his senior season, Holden reeled in 31 receptions for 512 yards, an average of 16.5 yards-per-catch and seven touchdowns. These stats earned Holden four stars from 247Sports.

The receiver is listed at 6-foot-3, 196 pounds on the Alabama roster.

The big-body freshman says the players he looks up to are Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley and Amari Cooper – all Alabama products.

What makes Holden so special is that he is a severe down-field threat and is not afraid to run through defensive backs to complete his routes.

All of his skills can be seen in his highlight reel posted by AL.com

Smith has the all-around skill, Waddle has the speed and elusiveness and Holden can offer strength, speed and hands.

When watching his tape, it’s hard not to notice his strict route-running and ability to move wherever needed in order to bring the ball in. His long legs and large frame allow him to not only get down the field quickly, but to also reach around or over any defensive back that may be in his way.

With Tua Tagovailoa in the rearview mirror for the Crimson Tide, Mac Jones will likely take over. From what we have seen, Jones is not as confident as Tua when throwing downfield. Having Holden’s presence can be a big help to Jones.

Let’s also not forget that Holden is also an elite kick returner. When watching his film, it’s hard not to be impressed after he disappears into a pile and then comes out the other end, seemingly untouched.

There’s some work to be done on Holden’s end though. He is a true freshman trying to get playing time amidst a squad of tight-knit players that have shown the coaching staff who they are capable of.

However, if he is able to get it one during the preseason training and establish himself as a viable receiver that can help Alabama succeed, expect to hear his name called throughout the 2020 season.

Alabama player snapshot: No. 6 DeVonta Smith

Senior wide receiver DeVonta Smith is the next man up on Alabama football’s player snapshot, which highlights each scholarship player.

Also included in each article is a quick recap letting you know what to expect from that player for the upcoming 2020 season and beyond.

Next up on the list is wide receiver DeVonta Smith out of Amite (La.).

DeVonta Smith, Wide Receiver

Height: 6-1 / Weight: 175

Class: Senior

Hometown: Amite (La.)

High School: Amite High School

HS ranking (247Sports): 4-star / No. 62 overall / No. 9 WR / No. 2 LA

HS ranking (Rivals): 4-star / No. 42 overall / No. 6 WR / No. 2 LA

Analysis: The 2020 season could be DeVonta Smith’s best, which is scary considering he’s fresh off a 68-catch, 1,256-yard season that included an eye-popping 14 touchdowns.

With Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III (117 receptions, 1,909 yards, 17 touchdowns combined) off to the NFL, Smith and rising junior Jaylen Waddle will be the clear top-two options in Alabama’s passing game.

And while that means there will be plenty of opportunities for Smith, it also means that he’ll have to continue to prove that he can be productive while receiving a bulk of the attention from opposing defenses.

Expect him to handle that role in stride, much like he did against star LSU defensive back Derek Stingley, who helped allow Smith to earn seven catches for 213 yards and two touchdowns (a 30.4-yard average) back in Nov. of 2019.

Tennessee Titans take Alabama WR in way-too-early Draft Wire 2021 mock

The Titans might have just completed the 2020 NFL Draft, but it’s never too early to start looking ahead.

The 2020 NFL Draft may have just come to a close, but it’s never too early to start thinking about the next year.

The Tennessee Titans have a good thing going in Nashville after falling just short of a Super Bowl appearance last season, and will continue to build off of that in the coming years to become a team that can consistently contend in the postseason.

So, what could that mean for the 2021 NFL Draft?

According to Luke Easterling of Draft Wire, the Titans will pick at No. 17 overall, and take Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith off the board.

There are several takeaways from that prediction, with two of the most important being that Easterling sees the Titans regressing from 2019’s level of success and needing to give Tannehill a new target.

And, with the Titans declining the fifth-year option of Corey Davis on Friday, finding a new receiver in next year’s draft becomes even more important if he doesn’t return after 2020, which is now likely.

Last year, Smith played in 13 games and caught 68 passes for 1,256 yards and 14 touchdowns. So far in his college career, Smith has appeared in 34 games, reeling in 118 receptions for 2,109 yards with 23 touchdowns.

It will be interesting to see how closely Easterling’s projections align with reality after we get to about this time next year.

Alabama WR Devonta Smith is the 1st player projected to the Lions for the 2021 NFL Draft

Preseason mock drafts are valuable more as watch lists and perception of team need more than they are for their predictive value

With the body of the 2020 NFL Draft not even cold yet, the life force of the draft media has already poured forward into 2021. The first mock drafts for next April’s extravaganza are already out. One early 2021 mock offers a hint at where the Lions could be looking to fill holes next year.

The way-too-early projection from Bleacher Report and analyst Matt Miller is for the Lions to select Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith with the No. 7 overall pick. While the draft slot is disappointingly high, the concept of taking a wide receiver in the first round is one Lions fans are going to need to get used to over the next year.

Remember, the Lions do not have a single wide receiver under contract beyond 2020 except 5th-round rookie Quintez Cephus, who has yet to sign his first deal.

Smith has already posted some very impressive game tape for the Crimson Tide. As Miller notes,

Devonta Smith exploded onto the scene for Alabama in an impressive wide receiver room this season but still managed to impress with massive performances like his five-touchdown game against Ole Miss. His production might take a hit with a new quarterback, but his traits point to Round 1, as he looks like a clone of Jerry Jeudy.

Preseason mock drafts are valuable more as watch lists and perception of team need more than they are for their predictive value. Treat them as such and they’re fun and informative.

2021 mock draft has 7 Alabama players first round

Miller, like most draft analysts, understand that there will more than likely be an Alabama presence in the first round of the NFL draft…

NFL draft expert, Matt Miller with Bleacher Report, released his ‘way too early’ mock draft for the 2021 cycle.

Miller, like most draft analysts, understands that there will more than likely be another strong representation from Alabama standouts in the first round. Four Crimson Tide products heard their names called during the 2020 NFL Draft, after all.

In Miller’s first mock draft for 2021, seven different Alabama players were selected in the first round.

It’s important to note that we are still extremely far away from the next draft taking place. Some of the players mentioned are entering their junior season, which means they may elect to stay for their senior year rather than entering the draft.

Here’s where the former members of the Crimson Tide landed:

30: Baltimore Ravens – LaBryan Ray, IDL

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

Miller claims that Ray is the second best defensive lineman in the 2021 draft class and the Ravens get a steal by selecting him this late in the first round.

21. Pittsburgh Steelers – Patrick Surtain II, CB

Patrick Surtain
Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Surtain is credited for having the NFL in his blood, but Miller also states that he is a fast and physical defensive back that is “tough to beat.”

Since Alabama football’s Pro Day is canceled due to the CoronaVirus pandemic, the focus has shifted towards the Crimson Tide alum and the 2020 NFL Draft.

One issue is, while Tua Tagovailoa, Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs are already large names in the spotlight and had the NFL Combine to attend, other players are left with nothing more than tape from their time in college.

Former Alabama defensive back Jared Mayden didn’t let the lack of a Pro-Day slow him down on his quest to continue playing the game he loves on a professional level.

Mayden took to Twitter to post a series of clips that served as a replacement for the drills he would have ran at the event.

The 45-second video may not be as helpful to NFL scouts as an entire day of monitoring his every move, but the initiative he took certainly helps his case.

In 2019 Mayden posted 59 total tackles through 11 games with three pass deflections and four interceptions. These numbers were good enough to earn the Nick Saban product a draft grade of rounds No. 2 or 3 by TDAlabamamag.com.

This may be a growing trend among players who need the extra exposure. There’s certainly a chance that more Alabama players try this out as well in order to gain some attention from any and all NFL franchises.

As the Coronavirus pandemic of 2020 is constantly changing our everyday lives, it also continues to affect the present and future landscape of the sports world.

Amidst professional sports seasons being canceled and postponed, questions loomed over the status of the 2020 NFL Draft, which was set to take place in Las Vegas.

The draft is currently seen as one of the last pieces of sports the American public has to hold on to, and the NFL has taken notice.

The league has taken extra precaution as teams have imposed their own restrictions on staff and personnel, especially during this time traditionally designated for free agency and scouting for the draft.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent out a memo today to all NFL teams updating the league on the state of the draft, which is now less than a month away.

Goodell mentions the NFL’s proactive stance on ensuring the safety of not only everyone involved in the league, but the fans as well.

He references the canceling of all future events and encourages teams to prepare to have their team work outside of their facilities and in smaller groups.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes in his Tweet, the draft will still take place on the original dates of Apr. 23-25, but that’s as much information as we get about how this draft will be different from previous years.

We can only speculate that the 2020 NFL Draft will happen online, potentially over video chat, but it would likely be better to wait for an official announcement from the NFL or Goodell.

Regardless off how it happens, it will get done, though, this may be the most unique draft in all of NFL history.

Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on al things NFL Draft related and how it will impact former members of the Crimson Tide!

Who will lead the Alabama wide receiver group in 2020?

The 2019 Alabama Crimson Tide will go down in history as being one of the most offensively talented teams in Alabama football history.

The wide receiving corps, also referred to as the “Rydeout Boyz,” consisted of Biletnikoff winner Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Devonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle.

Jeudy headlined the group, while Ruggs quietly flashed his speed. Smith and Waddle were both big impact players, but didn’t necessarily receive the same amount of hype as the others.

With Jeudy and Smith both foregoing their senior seasons and declaring for the 2020 NFL Draft, there is a need for a new leader to step up and take charge of the group.

This unofficial position is going to carry a lot of weight moving into the 2020 college football season.

In years prior, they had some sort of comfort knowing Tua Tagovailoa would most likely be the one sending the ball their way. However, now that he has also departed from the university to pursue an NFL career, this leader must set the tone for the wide receiver corps as a quarterback battle ensues.

Smith, the rising senior, put up some very impressive numbers on the board in 2019 – so good, that many believed he might have declared for the NFL draft.

In the 2019 season, Smith accumulated 1,256 yards off of 68 catches for 14 touchdowns. However, it was difficult to generate exposure on a national scale when Jeudy and Smith are also making headline-worthy plays.

Waddle has always been seen as the young one – Jeudy, Ruggs and Smith were all members of the 2017 recruiting class. Now, a junior, he will be one of the oldest members of the receiving corps.

The stats Waddle put up in 2019 weren’t the most attractive, but with three fellow receivers ahead of him eligible for the draft, we shouldn’t have expected a career season.

Waddle managed 560 yards off of 33 catches for six touchdowns. Nothing crazy, but still solid.

The real question is: who will be the leader this upcoming season?

With the impending quarterback battle, it has to be a player that is able to adapt easily. With a majority of the receivers being underclassmen, it has to be a player that can relate with them.

The player that ought to lead the Alabama receiving corps in 2020 is Jaylen Waddle.

He may not have the most flashy numbers at the end of the season, and he may not be the name at the top of the box score at the end of the game, but he embodies everything this leader needs in order to keep this positional group elite.

The junior wide receiver from Texas has proven he has the ability to adapt, as  he is a multi-positional player – slot receiver and return specialist.

He is also used to being one of the youngest, this will help him guide the underclassmen through their first or second seasons.

All of this will also contribute to his potential draft grade. As a junior Waddle is now eligible for the NFL draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft is set to take place in Late April in Las Vegas, and it’s poised to be another Crimson Tide takeover in the first round with some mock drafts having eight former Alabama players being selected in the first round.

The most talked about player heading into the draft is former Alabama quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa.

Mel Kiper joined ESPN and spoke on his thoughts regarding Tagovailoa and the struggling Miami Dolphins as a pair.

Kiper, a seasoned NFL draft analyst, says that the Dolphins would be smart to draft Tagovailoa, essentially deeming them the winners of the ‘Tank for Tua’ sweepstakes.

He also goes on to explain that having the former Heisman finalist sit out a year and “red shirt” would not be the worst idea, citing Patrick Mahomes as an example of how that could work.

The Dolphins have an ideal situation in their quarterback room. They have Ryan Fitzpatrick under contract for one more season, to which they can let him play until Tagovailoa is healthy and ready to play.

There is still plenty of time until the 2020 NFL Draft, but Roll Tide Wire will keep you updated on all things Alabama football as needed.
