On Sunday, the Buffalo Bills waived former Alabama safety Jared Mayden. The move was one of several that the Bills organization will have to make ahead of Tuesday’s roster deadline. Meaning, each NFL team is forced to make decisions to field a 53-man roster. During the preseason, each team is allowed to have 90 players on the roster.

Mayden is entering his fourth season in the NFL. The Texas native was signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers in 2020. He recorded two tackles in two games for the 49ers.

After being released by the 49ers midway through the 2021 season, Mayden would join the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad. Mayden played in four games recording six tackles.

After spending close to a year with the Eagles, Mayden was released. Since then, Mayden has joined the New York Jets and Bills practice squad. Now, he will be able to be claimed off of waivers. NFL teams can begin to claim players on the waiver wire starting on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see where Mayden ends up next.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Jared Mayden and other former Alabama football players in the NFL.

The salary cap will increase to $224.8 million for the 2023 season.

For some teams, the slight increase in cap space provides a little breathing room to retain players on expiring deals or acquire talent that could help them succeed in the upcoming season.

Bills signed safety Jared Mayden from Jets practice squad

#Bills sign safety Jared Mayden from the #Jets practice squad:

In light of the ongoing Damar Hamlin situation, the Bills made a roster move to strengthen the depth of their roster at the safety position.

With Hamlin, 24, improving but still recovering from the cardiac arrest he suffered against the Bengals on Monday, the Bills went on to sign safety Jared Mayden off the Jets’ practice squad.

The team announced the transaction on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the team did not release Hamlin as he remains on their roster. Instead, cornerback Xavier Rhodes was let go.

Rhodes had previously started at cornerback for the Bills this season, however, he had been a healthy scratch in recent weeks.

Mayden previously spent three weeks on the Bills practice squad in October. He entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2020 out of Alabama, signing with the 49ers.

Mayden has appeared in six games in his career, featuring mostly on special teams.

Former Alabama safety signed to Bills practice squad

Former Alabama safety Jared Mayden signed to the Buffalo Bills practice squad on Monday.

One of Alabama’s former safeties, Jared Mayden, signed with the Buffalo Bills practice squad on Monday. He last played for the Philadelphia Eagles before being released in September.

Mayden spent four seasons playing safety at Alabama. He recorded 82 tackles, three tackles for loss, and four interceptions. The native of Sachse, Texas played in 34 total games during his Alabama career.

In 2020, Mayden went undrafted before signing as a free agent with the San Fransisco 49ers. He spent almost two seasons there before he was waived and claimed off of waivers by the Eagles. In the six games that he has played in the NFL, Mayden has tallied seven tackles.

With the Bills having several injuries in the secondary, Mayden could be called on sooner rather than later.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Mayden’s professional career and other Alabama NFL players.

Philadelphia Eagles waive Lance Lenoir, Jimmy Moreland, and Jared Mayden as the team trims down to 85 players

The Philadelphia Eagles announced three roster moves on Tuesday as the team prepares for a Wednesday flight to Cleveland for two days of joint practices and a preseason matchup against the Browns on Sunday.

Philadelphia waived/injured wide receiver Lance Lenoir, safety Jared Mayden, and cornerback Jimmy Moreland just days after the team moved on from Ali Fayad and William Dunkle.

The Eagles had to get to 85 players by the 4:00 PM est deadline, and they’ll need to be down to 80 players by next Tuesday afternoon.

Eagles’ depth at safety gets a big boost with the addition of Jaquiski Tartt

Philadelphia Eagles’ depth at safety gets a big boost with the addition of Jaquiski Tartt

The Eagles quietly added more depth and competition to the roster, agreeing to a one-year deal with former 49ers safety, Jaquiski Tartt.

A 2015 second-round draft pick (46th overall) by San Francisco, Tartt will immediately compete for a starting role opposite Anthony Harris.

Tartt’s addition provides a big boost to the depth chart and provides an interesting dynamic from a competition standpoint.

Here’s a breakdown of the added depth.

Looking at the Eagles biggest remaining need as training camp approaches

Looking at the Philadelphia Eagles’ biggest remaining need as training camp approaches

The Philadelphia Eagles currently have six safeties on the roster, and with training camp fast approaching, an upgrade could be in the cards.

The Birds improved at every position this offseason, but after missing out on a few big names, Philadelphia re-signed Anthony Harris and gave Marcus Epps a promotion after Rodney McLeod signed with the Colts.

CBS Sports is looking at the biggest remaining needs for all 32 NFL teams, and the safety position hit the mark for the Eagles.

Positional value might as well have been trending in Philadelphia leading up to the draft. Would the team use one of its first-round selections on a wide receiver for the third time in as many years? Linebacker has never been a position of importance for the franchise. Would that change? Do they value safety in the first round? When the weekend had ended, they had addressed both linebacker and wide receiver in unconventional ways. That left safety as the remaining position of concern.

Pursuit of Tyrann Mathieu fell short, and that leaves the team with Anthony Harris, Marcus Epps and several former undrafted free agents. The investment in cornerback and the front seven should help that unit, however.

Harris had a solid season in 2021 and should show improved range with James Bradberry, Kyriz White, Haason Reddick, Jordan Davis, and Nakobe Dean as additions on defense.

Epps is playing for a new contract and should flourish with increased snaps, while Andre Chachere and Reed Blankenship are also players to watch.

Breaking down Eagles depth at safety position after missing out on Tyrann Mathieu

Breaking down the Philadelphia Eagles’ depth at the safety position after missing out on Tyrann Mathieu

The Eagles seemingly lost out or were priced out on another big named free agent, as Tyrann Mathieu is expected to sign with his hometown New Orleans Saints.

After bypassing safeties in the draft, GM Howie Roseman is prepared to enter minicamps and training camps with five safeties on the roster, and just one player who has been a full-time starter in the NFL.

With Mathieu likely headed to the Saints, let’s break down the depth at the safety position for Philadelphia.
