2 Dolphins players out, De’Von Achane questionable vs. Bills

The Dolphins will be down one running back and could be without another Thursday against the Bills.

Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane is questionable for a Week 2 matchup against the Buffalo Bills and running back Raheem Mostert has been ruled out, the team announced in its injury report Friday.

Achane suffered an ankle injury in the final minutes of the Dolphins’ Week 1 win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. While the team didn’t practice Monday and Tuesday, the estimation on the Dolphins’ injury reports was that he would’ve missed the sessions if they were held.

On Wednesday, he returned to the practice field for light work.

With Mostert out and Achane banged up, expect fourth-round rookie Jaylen Wright to make his NFL debut Thursday after missing Week 1 as a healthy scratch.

Along with Mostert, rookie wide receiver Malik Washington was ruled out with the same quad injury that sidelined him in Week 1. The team elevated Robbie Chosen from the practice squad and may be inclined to do so again for Thursday.

The significant injury on the Bills’ side is the loss of slot cornerback Taron Johnson, a leader in the Buffalo secondary who was second on the team behind only Jordan Poyer in defensive snaps last season.

Raheem Mostert ruled out vs. Bills, ‘we will see’ about De’Von Achane

The Dolphins’ running back depth will be tested Thursday night.

The Miami Dolphins’ running back depth will be tested Thursday night against the Buffalo Bills.

On Wednesday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said starter Raheem Mostert will miss the Week 2 game due to a chest injury suffered in their season-opening win. He wasn’t ready to make the same determination for De’Von Achane, who is dealing with an ankle injury.

“We’ll see how it plays out today,” McDaniel said of Achane.

Behind Mostert and Achane on the depth chart is veteran Jeff Wilson Jr., who provided a spark to the Dolphins late in Week 1 with five carries for 26 yards. Miami also has fourth-round rookie Jaylen Wright, who impressed in preseason but was a healthy scratch Sunday.

In their season-opening win against the Arizona Cardinals, the Bills allowed 124 rushing yards, although nearly half came from the quarterback position with Kyler Murray escaping for 57 yards on five runs.

Both Mostert and Achane were listed as “did not practice” on the first two injury reports of the week; however, those are estimations of their hypothetical participation as the Dolphins didn’t practice Monday and held a walkthrough Tuesday.

Dolphins list Raheem Mostert, De’Von Achane as DNP again Tuesday

The Dolphins made no changes to their injury report Tuesday, which doesn’t bode well for Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane playing Thursday.

The Miami Dolphins made no changes to their injury report from Monday to Tuesday and again listed running backs Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane as non-participants in practice.

The caveat is that the Dolphins didn’t practice Monday and held a walkthrough Tuesday, so the injury report is merely an estimation of what participation would’ve looked like on a normal practice day. Still, it doesn’t bode well for the chances of Mostert and/or Achane playing Thursday against the Buffalo Bills.

Mostert, 32, caught a seven-yard pass with just under six minutes left in the Dolphins’ Week 1 win and didn’t have another touch in the remainder of the game. Miami largely turned to veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. down the stretch, although Achane got a couple carries and a reception on the Dolphins’ last drive of the game.

Achane, 22, appeared to limp off the field after his last touch of the day against the Jaguars, a 10-yard reception.

In the event that one or both running backs are unavailable Thursday, the Dolphins will presumably lean on Wilson. Miami also has fourth-round rookie Jaylen Wright, who impressed in preseason, but was inactive against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

De’Von Achane, Raheem Mostert dealing with injuries

The Dolphins didn’t practice today, but said neither Raheem Mostert nor De’Von Achane would’ve participated if they did.

Just a day after the Miami Dolphins kicked off their 2024 season with a win against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team had to file its first injury report before a Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills.

While the Dolphins didn’t practice, they provided an estimation of what participation would look like if they did. And both of the team’s top running backs, Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, would’ve sat out practice, the Dolphins say.

Neither Mostert nor Achane left the game Sunday against the Jaguars due to their respective chest and ankle injuries. However, the Dolphins leaned on Jeff Wilson Jr. in the fourth quarter, giving the third back on the depth chart five of the last nine rushing attempts. The other four were split between Achane and fullback Alec Ingold.

The biggest name on the Buffalo Bills’ injury report is Josh Allen, who dealt with a hand issue in their win against the Arizona Cardinals. On Monday, head coach Sean McDermott said that Allen will play Thursday and he ruled out cornerback Taron Johnson.

Where should you draft Achane?

Achane’s fantasy value should continue to rise this season as he makes it clearer that he is the No. 1 back in Miami’s backfield.

While Mostert will still play a role, Achane proved last season how explosive he can be. With an offense as powerful as the Dolphins — with WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle taking throws from QB Tua Tagovailoa, — the Dolphins backfield will continue to be the cornerstone.

Draft Achane in the late 2nd to early 3rd round. Even though he may be battling for some snaps with Mostert, he will be the top back for the Dolphins. He averaged 16.06 points per game last season and showed his ability to not only explode for big plays, but to catch and score through the air, which is especially valuable in PPR leagues.

De’Von Achane has ‘made substantial growth,’ says Dolphins OC

Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith likes what he’s seen from De’Von Achane so far in training camp.

De’Von Achane only got 130 touches as a rookie in 2023, but he certainly maximized those opportunities. His 7.8 yards per carry was easily the highest mark in the NFL among players with at least 20 carries and Achane added 197 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns to boot.

Earlier in the offseason, Achane warned opponents that they hadn’t seen anything yet and they “better be worried” about what was coming in 2024 and beyond. The running back looked noticeably bigger during the offseason program, but Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith says it’s a mental leap that could make Achane especially dangerous.

“You can really see a growth of his understanding of the offense, where he fits in, just overall in the run game, where he’s trying to affect his aiming points, affect the defense, working together with the linemen, how it all fits together and then in the passing game as well,” Smith told reporters Thursday. “You can tell it’s year two for him. He’s really made substantial growth and I think this camp will really be good these next couple weeks for him to continue to grow upon everything he’s done.”

It’s a crowded backfield in Miami with Raheem Mostert, the NFL’s leader in rushing touchdowns during the 2023 season, set to return as the starter. In addition to Achane, there’s fourth-round rookie Jaylen Wright and veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. who will be battling for touches in relief of Mostert.

It seems for now that Achane is doing all the right things to position himself for a more significant role in the Dolphins offense in 2024.

Here’s who the Cowboys should’ve drafted in 2023 for immediate help

A look at what would have happened if Dallas knew how rookies would play early in their careers and focused on winning now with their draft haul. A way-too-soon Cowboys 2023 redraft shows who could’ve helped. | From @KDDrummondNFL

While normally it takes multiple seasons to judge a draft class, that isn’t necessarily the case for every situation. One of those is the 2023 Dallas Cowboys, who built themselves to compete for a championship this year.

Dallas’ draft class may have long term potential, but with the club already sitting in the fringe when it comes to the No. 1 seed race, it isn’t tough to see how a quicker impactful class could have been beneficial.

So while Mazi Smith, Luke Schoonmaker, Deuce Vaughn and an injured DeMarvion Overshown can eventually prove their worth, here’s a collection of rookies who were available and are thriving at positions Dallas could use some help.

Here’s a Cowboys-specific 2023 redraft from players who were available at the time Dallas picked, but they passed up on. Dallas had eight picks from their haul, how many of those players made it back to the organization?

Achane is second in the league in rushing yards (460) behind Christian McCaffrey and ahead of D’Andre Swift despite only having 38 rushing attempts.
